One interesting possibility is helping elephants in Thailand. Most people think of elephants as animals in zoos or circuses. Now, hundreds of them are homeless. Theses gentle animals are often found on the streets as they don’t have owners to care for them. Although they may look well, they are often in poor health and don’t have enough to eat. One center in Thailand cares for these elephants. It gives them a safe and natural living space. When they are at the center, they stay in a building but are free to walk around. Students come from all over the world to help here. The student helpers work with the elephant keepers. These keepers train the students in caring for the elephants. In the morning, they go to the forest together and lead the elephants to the center. They clean them and give them food. In the afternoon, they take the animals back into the forest for the night. Helping at the center is interesting and the young people learn a lot.

Kristina’s family was going to visit her grandparents. She was so excited! It had been months since their last visit. They called a taxi to take them to the airport. “This will save us lots of time,” Dad said. “We won’t have to worry about parking.”
However, the streets were crowded with cars, and the taxi slowly made its way to the airport through the traffic. They arrived at the airport very late, got stuck at a check point for a while, and had to run all the way to the gate to catch their plane. Out of breath, they finally reached the gate. The clerk saw them dash up and shook her head sadly. “You checked in too late,” the clerk said, “so we had to give your seats to other people. “And then what, Huck?”

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak, and when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way.
When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.
If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed, and few of us know that it is just his own fault (过错). Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and when they have to remember things, they cannot write them down in a small notebook. As a result, they have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so their memory is being exercised the whole time.
So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practice remembering things in a way as other people do.
42.Someone can’t have a good memory if ________.
A.he can’t read or write B.his parents haven’t a good memory
C.he doesn’t make good use of his memory. D.he doesn’t use his arms or legs for some time
43.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Your memory needs chance for practice.
B.A good memory is inherited (遗传) from parents.
C.Your memory works in the different ways as your arms or legs.
D.Don’t learn to read and write if you want to have a good memory.
44.Few people know that if someone has a poor memory it is ________.
A.his own fault B.his parents’ fault
C.his teachers’ fault D.his friends’ fault
45.The writer wants to tell us ________.
A.how to read and write well
B.how to have a good memory
C.how to use our arms or legs better
D.how to learn from the people who can’t read or write

In our daily life, we always put our time into three jars (罐子). These would be the necessary (必要) tasks jar, the voluntary (自愿) tasks jar and the happiness jar.
Every day, we spend time filling the necessary tasks jar. We fill this jar with useful things, like making money, doing housework, buying food and paying bills. We then fill another jar with voluntary tasks. These are things that we do for others, but we may not enjoy them. This jar is filled with tasks like taking children to activities and cooking family meals. Those jars are very important. If we don’t fill them each day, our family won’t run well.
However, we often forget to fill the third jar − the happiness jar. This is the jar that we fill with activities that make us happy. Is your happiness jar sometimes empty at the end of the day? We all have days like that. Between doing all the necessary and voluntary tasks, time flies by on some days, and before we know it, it is time for bed.
That is why each day we try to fill our happiness jar. Most days, I fill mine by going to the ballroom dance (社交舞) class. Between the music, the dancing and the friendship among the students, I always leave classes more happily than when I entered. Playing music is another way that I fill my happiness jar. This week, I was happy to take part in an orchestra (管弦乐队) practice at my church (教堂). A small group of us met to practice Christmas music for a church service. It was a time of fun, friendship and music making. At the end of the evening, my happiness jar was full.
Consider how to spend your time. Try to find ways to get a balance. At the end of the day, hopefully we’ve done all we can to make sure that we fill our happiness jar.

3.C
yourself你自己;myself我自己;yourselves你们自己;you你/你们;us我们。固定搭配:keep the secret to oneself“保守秘密”,这句话是对“Millie和Lily”说的,用反身代词yourselves。
4.A
根据“some robots will do the same jobs as people”可知,机器人将做和人一样的工作,人的工作机会就会更少,此处是修饰可数名词jobs,应用fewer。故选A。
5.C

more better than错误表述;as well as和……一样好,well为副词;as good as和…… good为形容词;as badly as和…… 根据“My cousin speaks good English, but not…me.”

10.A

14.B

What Makes a True Friend
As a Chinese saying goes: A friend in need is a friend indeed. So I think true friendship should help each other when they are in trouble. I have a close friend. His name is John. Once, I didn’t pass my math exam and couldn’t help crying. He came to comfort me. From then on, he helped me with my math. With his help, I am not weak in math any longer.
For me, it is necessary for us to learn how to get on well with friends. First of all, we are supposed to help them out when they are in need. What’s more, we had better share not only happiness but also sadness. Only in this way can our friendship last longer.
