To see the world is one thing. To have someone to share it with is another. Indeed travel becomes more interesting when you have a travel partner. A travel partner can be a close friend, a family member, a pal you’ve met online, or a business friend.
You can have someone to talk to and turn to
Traveling alone is fun, but wouldn’t you feel lonely? Having a travel partner can remove the feeling of loneliness. It will be very convenient if you can get a travel companion who is very familiar with the place you’re traveling to. You don’t have to ask any information from the locals, and you can save your time.
You can have someone to share the costs with
One of the major headaches in traveling is the costs involved. You can’t simply ignore the rising prices of hotels or plane tickets. You should also think about your daily needs, such as your food. Of course, you can’t simply go back without bringing any souvenirs (纪念品) for your friends and family. All these can overspend your budget (预算). However, when you have a travel friend, you can have someone to share the expenses with.
You can meet a new friend
Having a travel mate is a good way of meeting a new friend or even a lifelong partner. You can never count the number of couples who actually found their way into each other’s heart while traveling together in another country.
You can have someone to watch out for you
When you’re in a foreign land, you’ll never be really safe. You don’t know the rules as well as the culture of the people. A travel mate will be able to remind you of your manners in the country and to look after your luggage just in case your belongings get lost. So why don’t you find a travel companion now? Let’s find out how...

Thanks to a generous and kind soul, this winter is not cold any more. A Stockton teen will make sure seniors are staying warm and unforgotten during the holiday season, because dozens of elders across the nation are getting socks for Christmas — they couldn’t be happier about it.
Elle Gianelli, 17, is a student in high school, but most of her friends are elders. She has been making colored socks with silly designs for years, sending them to seniors in nursing and care homes to brighten up their day.
It all started from the closer-than-close friendship she has with her grandmother, which taught the value of spending time with elders. “I’m a grandma’s girl, I love love love my nana,” Gianelli said. On putting forward the idea, she was supported by her family and friends. Later, she was encouraged by her teachers who started the project Socks for Seniors when she was in her 7th grade, and she has so far lighted up 92 care homes in 48 states.
But as Christmas approaches, she’s making efforts to prepare her surprise in order to send boxes of silly socks to elders in all 50 states in time for the big day. “I know most people have toys for babies and things for kids but they always seem to forget about elders,” Gianelli told CBS. “Maybe they don’t have family or maybe they live super far away and they’re only getting something like a postcard.” To make sure that elders’ toes and hearts remain warm this holiday season, Gianelli is hoping to raise $10,000 through GoFundMe for a big sock drive. So far, with still 19 days to go before Christmas, she has received 95% of her total in donations.
4.What’s elders’ feeling on getting the socks?
A.Overjoyed. B.Embarrassed. C.Confused. D.Frightened.
5.What inspired Gianelli’s kind action?
A.Teachers’ guidance. B.Christmas project.
C.Love for her grandma. D.Encouragement from friends.
6.What can we learn about Gianelli’s Christmas surprise?
A.She also has toys and things for kids. B.She will send socks to seniors in 48 states.
C.She still has 19 days to prepare the surprise. D.She has raised $10,000 through GoFundMe.
7.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Warm Gifts From a Teen. B.The Wishes of the Elders.
C.A Special Relationship. D.A Wonderful School Project.

When rescuers were called to rescue a “little owl (猫头鹰)”, they did not expect to find one that was too fat to fly. A concerned citizen first found the poor bird lying helplessly. Even Rufus Samkin, one of the rescuers, believed the bird to be injured. There were no wounds to be found, however, causing experts to believe the female owl was simply too wet to fly.
But it was only after a thorough drying-off and complete check up that they noted the real issue. The rescuers weighed the owl and guessed that she was “simply extremely fat” and couldn’t take off. Experts began to wonder how she got so fat. Because it’s rather unusual for wild birds to reach such a state, they decided to keep her a few weeks and monitor her.
In the end, the rescuers believed that it was simply a case of “natural fatness”. December 2021 was quite warm, which meant that there were many insects for the bird to eat. Indeed, the owl was discovered in a field that was “filled with field mice” due to the climate. “It’s been very mild here, and the owl is able to find food easily,” Samkin explained. “With the sudden food, she ate much and got very fat. She had a lovely time, but went too far.”
The researchers then put the owl on a “strict diet”, so she could shrink to a more “natural weight”. She was even put on a bit of exercise and encouraged to fly around. In the end, she was sent flying off into the countryside at a much healthier and happier weight. Hopefully, this owl won’t come upon another feast of field mice—unless she wants another few weeks at the fat camp.
8.What did rescuers think of the owl at first?
A.She got hurt. B.She fell ill. C.She was too hungry. D.She was too wet.
9.Why was the bird unable to fly?
A.She was too young. B.She lost her wing.
C.She was overweight. D.She was very tired.
10.What helped the owl have enough food?
A.Less hunting. B.The good harvest. C.More wasted food. D.The warm weather.
11.What does the last paragraph mainly focus on?
A.The fat camp. B.How to help the owl.
C.Where to free the owl. D.The need to drive mice away.
D
The middle child, I think, is now an “endangered species”. According to a study, in 1976, 65 percent of mothers between aged 40 and 44 had three or more children. Today, nearly two-thirds of women with children have only one or two. Middle children will soon be the tiniest.
As a middle child, I am disappointed at the potential disappearance of middle children. I’m the middle of three — two boys, one girl — so I’m what’s sometimes regarded as a “classic middle child”.
Being a middle child is not something you are eager for. As one middle child said to me, “There is a thing called middle-child syndrome (综合征). I certainly was always aware that the middle was not a position to be admired, even as I came to see typical middle-child features in myself. Middle children are natural mediators (和事佬); I avoid disagreements and habitually act as the family peace-maker. Middle children tend to be private but also long for love; I keep to myself but do not exactly hate attention.”
According to studies, middles traditionally receive less economic and emotional support from their parents. They also typically have less close relationships with their mothers and fathers compared with other brothers or sisters, so they tend to have more friends to fill the feeling gap.
In a study conducted by the City College of New York in which participants were asked to choose words they associate with the first, last, and middle kids, positive words such as caring and ambitious were cited concerning all three birth orders. Only middles, however, were described with such negative terms as overlooked and confused. More importantly, middles may be many things and they were the only birth order with which no one connected the term “overindulged”. It is true: their parents couldn’t allow them to do or have whatever they want, especially when they are old enough, and they don’t ask for everything either even if they are eager to own it occasionally.
12.Why does the author mention the study in paragraph 1?
A.To inform a definition.
B.To introduce the topic.
C.To make a comparison.
D.To support his opinion.
13.What can we learn about “middle-child syndrome”?
A.It is dangerous for middles to suffer from it.
B.It clearly shows the typical features of middles.
C.It is what non-middle kids admire and wish for.
D.It is the result of the unsuccessful parenting style.
14.Who is an overindulged kid according to paragraph 5?
A.John, 3, asking his mother for dressing him.
B.Mary, 8, busy in focusing on her preference.
C.Paul, 12, unwilling to have breakfast by himself.
D.Nancy, 17, afraid to challenge the math problems.
15.What’s the author’s opinion about middles according to the passage?
A.They are always in low spirits.
B.They stress the protection of privacy.
C.They are ignored but independent.
D.They support the family economically.

The day that I met my best friend for the first time, I was anxiously reviewing for an important exam in the local library. Because I kept being disturbed by others, I was unable to make any progress, The last straw was when I heard someone singing behind me. I turned around and gave the person a dirty look. It was a tall girl about the same age as me and she had a slight smile on her face. Standing near the “English Literature” section, she seemed to be looking for a book. “How could she be so selfish (自私的)?” I thought angrily.
I picked up my books, looked into her eyes and said angrily, “Please be considerate in public. I’ve been unable to study because of your terrible singing”
I still hate thinking of that moment. Let me tell you the rest of the story though.
Two hours later, I realized I’d forgotten my most important textbook in the library. What was worse, the library had already closed. I was close to tears. Just then, the phone rang. A soft voice introduced the speaker as Li Hua and asked if I was Jane. After confirming that I was, she told me that she had noticed my book in the library. As my phone number was in it, she called and told me she didn’t live far away and could bring it to me.
Paragraph 1: I sighed (叹息) with relief and agreed to meet her at the store down the road.

根据文章第三段“December 2021 was quite warm, which meant that there were many insects for the bird to eat. Indeed, the owl was discovered in a field that was “filled with field mice” due to the climate. “It’s been very mild here, and the owl is able to find food easily,” Samkin explained. “With the sudden food, she ate much and got very fat. She had a lovely time, but went too far.”(2021年的12月相当温暖,这意味着有很多昆虫可供鸟类食用。事实上,这只猫头鹰是在一个由于气候原因“田鼠遍地”的地方发现的。“这里非常温和,猫头鹰很容易找到食物,”萨姆金解释说。“由于突如其来的食物,她吃得很多,变得很胖。她玩得很开心,但太过分了。”)”可知,由于天气温暖,猫头鹰有许多食物吃。故选D项。
4. 主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“The researchers then put the owl on a “strict diet”, so she could shrink to a more “natural weight”. She was even put on a bit of exercise and encouraged to fly around. 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了排行中间的孩子的特点和感受,以及形成这种现象的原因。
12.推理判断题。由文章第一段中“The middle child, I think, is now an “endangered species”. According to a study, in 1976,65 percent of mothers between aged 40 and 44 had three or more children. Today, nearly two-thirds of women with children have only one or two. Middle children will soon be the tiniest. (我想,老二现在是“濒危物种”了。根据一项研究,1976年,年龄在40岁到44岁之间的母亲中有65%有三个或更多的孩子。如今,近三分之二有孩子的女性只有一两个孩子。中间的孩子很快就会是最小的。)”可知,作者在第1段中提到这项研究是为了引出本文的主题,即介绍了排行中间的孩子的特点和感受,以及形成这种现象的原因。故选B。
13.推理判断题。由文章第三段中“Being a middle child is not something you are eager for. Middle children tend to be private but also long for love; I keep to myself but do not exactly hate attention.”(成为中间的孩子并不是你所渴望的。
由文章第五段中“More importantly, middles may be many things and they were the only birth order with which no one connected the term “overindulged”. It is true: their parents couldn’t allow them to do or have whatever they want, especially when they are enough old, and they don’t ask for everything either even if they are eager to own it occasionally.
由文章第三段中“Middle children tend to be private but also long for love; I keep to myself but do not exactly hate attention. (排行中间的孩子往往不爱张扬,但也渴望爱;我独来独往,但并不讨厌别人的关注。)”、第四段中“According to studies, middles traditionally receive less economic and emotional support from their parents. They also typically have less close relationships with their mothers and fathers compared with other brothers or sisters, so they tend to have more friends to fill the feeling gap. (根据研究,传统上,中间的孩子从父母那里得到的经济和情感支持较少。与其他兄弟姐妹相比,他们与父母的关系通常也不那么亲密,所以他们往往有更多的朋友来填补感情上的空白。)”可知,作者认为中间的孩子往往被忽视但独立。故选C。

47.参考答案
I sighed with relief and agreed to meet her at the store down the road. I was so thankful! You can guess who Li Hua was. She was the girl I had shouted at for singing. When I recognized her in the store, I was filled with shame and apologized for what I had done. But Li Hua just laughed and told me she was glad that I had left her a dirty look in the library.
Can you believe we became best friends? I often think how lucky I am. She showed me forgiveness even though she didn't have to. Ever since then, we two have been best friends. To be honest, I trust her more than anyone else. If Li Hua hadn’t been such a kind-hearted girl that was willing to forgive my short temper, I would never have experienced such true friendship.
