Suggested answers: ·A summary is a short statement of main points. A summary paragraph tells the main idea and the most important information of a longer passage. ·Five Ws and one H (who, what, where, when, why, and how). ·Include all the key points, cut unnecessary details or examples, and use your own words. 【设计意图】阅读本则新闻报道的摘要后，学生在小组内讨论摘要的概念、包含的信息及如何进行摘要写作。通过思维的碰撞，学生对摘要写作的内容、语言和思维图式有了初步的了解，也为之后的摘要写作搭好脚手架，降低写作难度。 Step III 迁移创新 活动五：想象与创造 Write a summary. Ask students to write a summary for the text "The Night the Earth Didn't Sleep" and pay attention to the following tips. ·A summary should be around one third the length of the original text. ·Write down the key supporting points for the topic. ·Do not include unimportant details or examples. Possible version 1: For several days, strange things occurred in the countryside of northeastern Hebei. Then, on 28 July 1976, an earthquake hit Tangshan city. The city was greatly affected and nearly destroyed. Many people were killed or injured. The rescue work began soon after the quakes. Soldiers and medical workers arrived to find survivors and help the people who had lost everything. With strong support from the government and the tireless efforts of the people, a new Tangshan was built.Possible version 2: Strange things occurred in the countryside before the earthquake. On 28 July 1976, Tangshan city was hit by an earthquake. More than 400,000 people were dead or badly injured and the city was nearly ruined. Soldiers and medical workers were sent and started rescuing and rebuilding work right after the quakes. Because of the government's support and the people's efforts, a new Tangshan was built. 【设计意图】此任务需要学生将新建构的知识结构体系，即摘要写作的方法运用到实际写作中。在这个过程中，教师应启发学生全面思考、细致模仿、不断完善自己的写作，以此增强学生写作的信心。 活动六：批判与评价 Ask students to exchange their drafts and assess each other's work according to the checklist.
