“Why?” It’s a simple question that people ask Angela Madeline frequently. After all, she began a journey that very few people would ever attempt: walk around the world alone.
The thought of Madeline’s journey did not start from a place of loss or personal crisis. She said, “I was searching for a deeper interaction with nature and people.” Walking would minimize her carbon footprint, plus the slow pace meant that she could fully engage herself in nature, and gain insights into other cultures in a unique way.
She left her hometown of Bend, Oregon, on 2 May 2016 and headed into an adventure. Along the way, Madeline would suffer from heatstroke (中暑) in the Australian desert and hear gunshots while camping in Turkey. “Still,” she said, “I didn’t stop because I was more afraid of not following my heart than I was of losing everything I owned and loved.”
Apart from that, her slow pace allowed her to be drawn deeply into other cultures. She wandered the tiny seaside villages along Italy Tyrthenian Sea, enjoying the lively atmosphere. In Vietnam, she was offered food by an elderly woman and invited to rest in her wooden house at the peak for the night. She chose an experience of uncertainty and curiosity, in search of something she could never be certain to find: a sense of fulfillment and a deeper connection.
On16 December 2022, Madeline’s pilgrimage (朝圣之旅) ended right where it started. For now, she’s working on a book, planning future journeys and creating more effective ways for women to find and express courage in their lives.
Whether a walk leads halfway around the world or just down the road, Madeline has shown the true worth of embracing (拥抱) the unknown and giving more than we receive along the way.
4.Why did Madeline decide to start her journey?
A.To get rid of personal crisis. B.To get closer to the world.
C.To reduce carbon footprint. D.To slow down the pace of life.
5.What can we know about Madeline during the journey?
A.She was about to give up. B.She was helped by Italian locals.

C.An unforgettable memory of a trip. D.A woman walking around the world.

Coming into the town of Santa Catarina Palopó, in the highlands of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, the first thing you notice is the bright colors. Most of the buildings along the main street are eye-catching, deep blues and greens, dotted with red and yellow to form diverse patterns and designs.
Santa Catarina Palopó was once a sleepy town of 5, 000 people, most of them dependent on agricultural work. But as agriculture began to dry up here, poverty came. To deal with poverty and promote econ on growth through tourism, a small but creative group of laborers, artisans, domestic workers and stay-at-home moms created the Pintando Santa Catarina Palopó project.
The project aimed to paint all 850 homes and buildings in bright colors to change the hillside town into a work of art. “We wanted to paint the houses with colors and figures that represent the community” says the project’s executive director Stephany Blanco. “Families can choose designs for their house that are representative of the family.”
One of the most representative characteristics of the region is the blue huipil, a traditional blouse which has been worn commonly by local women since the 16th century. That deep sky blue was chosen the primary color-for the Pintando project, with secondary colors found in the sunsets and the nearby lake to make the design more attractive. Inspiration was also found in local culture, symbols such as volcanoes, flowers, and the national bird of Guatemala.
Each week, local artists, community members and tourists pick up paintbrushes to make buildings colorful. “At first, the idea of the project was uncertain, but now you can see a considerable difference in the town,” Melissa Whitbeck said. “The color of the buildings is believed to improve the quality-of life of the people. It uplifts the people’s mood and encourages them to be proud of their hometown.”
12.Why was the Pintando Santa Catarina project started?
A.Because of a workforce shortage. B.Due to the poor economic conditions.
C.Thanks to the increase in population. D.For the old-fashioned farming ways.
13.What is the project about?
A.Building family art galleries in Guatemala. B.Creating job opportunities for local artists.
C.Developing local tourism by selling artworks. D.Changing the town into a cultural destination.
14.What is the inspiration of the primary color for the project?
A.The surrounding volcanoes. B.Mayan-styled butterflies.
C.A type of traditional clothing. D.The national bird of Guatemala.
15.What is Melissa’s attitude towards the project?
A.Positive. B.Reserved. C.Concerned. D.Negative.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to protect your privacy when you travel
It hasn’t been an easy year for the privacy of travelers, at least so far. Data leaks, surveillance (监视) worries and those troublesome cameras in airplane seatbacks and hotel rooms are enough to make passengers anxious. 16 . These tips can help you deal with these troubles.
17 . “It’s not clever to declare on Facebook that you’re traveling to somewhere, reminding a wide range of people that your property is sitting empty,” says Danny McLoughlin. “That puts your security at risk.” Wait until you return to start posting vacation photos.
Some homeowners renting their residences may install security cameras. Travelers should find out if the hosts disclose the presence of surveillance devices. If the rental comes with cameras, ensure they aren’t in a sensitive area by conducting a careful sweep. 18 , ask the host about it.
Although you can’t control how a hotel or airline handles (or mishandles) your data, you can take reasonable steps to ensure the information it has won’t get you into trouble. 19 .
But some of the worst data leaks happen when you’re staying at a hotel. For example, a hotel clerk sometimes asks for your name and then announces your room number after you’ve checked in. You’d better hand the employee your ID when he or she asks for your name and ask the employee to write your room number on a piece of paper. Why? 20 . Just make sure, never leave the customer copy behind. You can destroy it later, but keep it under your control.
A.You should like the place
B.If there is anything doubtful
C.Travelers say they’re taking privacy seriously
D.Never broadcast your journey on social media
E.Walls have ears
F.Some travelers only offer the bare minimum, such as a P. O. box instead of a home address

O. box instead of a home address(有些旅行者只提供最基本的信息,比如邮政信箱而不是家庭住址)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选F项。
20.根据空格前的句子“You’d better hand the employee your ID when he or she asks for your name and ask the employee to write your room number on a piece of paper. Why? (当员工问你的名字时,你最好把你的身份证递给他,并让他把你的房间号码写在一张纸上。为什么?)”可知,空格处的句子应该是解释为什么把你的身份证递给员工,而不是直接告诉他你的名字,应该是防止别人听到,所以,E项“Walls have ears(隔墙有耳)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选E项。

46.Dear Henry,
Glad to learn that you are to visit China in the summer holiday. I’m writing to recommend to you my favorite tourist attraction.
When I read your letter, the first place that popped into my mind is Xishuangbanna, located in the southwest of China. You can enjoy the fascinating dances of Dai people there as well as all kinds of delicious food, especially the local snacks. What impresses me most is the Water Splashing Festival, at which people splash water onto each other to express their wishes. Colorful culture and customs are another chief reason why I recommend the place.
I’m sure the trip will be a visual feast for you.
Yours
Li Hua

Then she continued to head in the direction of her home. In the days to follow, she came across many interesting things and many helpful persons.
