•Giraffe Manor
Nairobi, Kenya
This hotel outside of Nairobi lets you get up close and personal with Rothschild giraffes. The original place was built in 1932 and has served as a giraffe shelter since the 1970s.Today, Giraffe Manor has six bedrooms and offers guests the chance to share their breakfast table with the eight resident giraffes. All of the hotel's profits go to support the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife.

Dessi Sieburth's love of birds started about six years ago. Now, he has his own group called Protecting Our Birds.Recently,Dessi, 11 years old, chatted with TFK about his work and goals for the future.
TFK:What is Protecting Our Birds?
DESSI:Birds are citizens of the world, so they need protection.I basically try to do conservation(保护) work to help birds get protected throughout the world.I recently wrote an article about a bird called the bar-tailed godwit(斑尾鹬).I interviewed a biologist(生物学家) named Nils Warnock, who had studied the bar-tailed godwit. He expressed the concern about the threat that the bar-tailed godwit is facing.I wrote an article about his answers to the questions, which is published on the American Birding Association Website.
TFK:What impelled you to start this project?
DESSI:When I was eight years old, our class had to do a wood-working project, so I chose a bird feeder(喂食盒).I didn't like birds at the time.I made the feeder, filled it up with seed, put it in my backyard and then the birds started coming.I got really interested in birds as more came.I later got involved in my local Audubon Society, which is an association devoted to preserving natural ecosystems. It really got me into birds and I realized bird populations were decreasing, and many are becoming endangered quite rapidly.I wanted to help them, so I started the project.
TFK:What are some future projects you plan to work on?
DESSI:I live in L.A.where there are a lot of parrots. Most of the parrots' native range is in Mexico, but they're really declining there because of habitat loss.I want to study the parrots and help them in their native range in Mexico, so they can start increasing again.
TFK:How can people learn more about Protecting Our Birds and the work you're doing?
DESSI:I have a website. It's protectingourbirds.my-free.website.There people can learn about what I do and how to help birds.

On Wednesday a powerful earthquake hit Amatrice that was at the epicenter(震中), which is the point in the earth's surface directly above where the earthquake happens. The town's clock tower was the only building still standing.Italy's prime minister said the earthquake had killed at least 120 people, and warned that the number might increase. There were several villages that were affected in farther mountainous areas. The earthquake was also felt as far away as Rome, 100 miles from the epicenter.
Earthquakes can't be predicted. There are warning systems that can save some lives, but only under certain conditions.Unlike a tornado warning where radar can see it and issue a warning before it, an earthquake warning happens when the earth is already shaking. We don't have a system that can predict when the earth is going to shake. Our warning system is based on the fact that the earth is already shaking. The warning depends on how far you are from the earthquake epicenter. If you're at an earthquake epicenter, you're going to get no warning. If you're far away from the epicenter, we can give you some time to prepare.
Another condition is how close the sensor is to the epicenter. If the sensor is 10 miles away from the epicenter, it takes five seconds to get to that sensor. So, the more sensors we get, the more time we'll get as well.If you get 10 seconds notice of an earthquake that's happening, especially a big one, you can open up the lifts on the nearest floor. You can also stop all the things that are moving before the shaking gets there. If you're 30 miles away, your warning could be 15 seconds. It is 15 seconds that can save your life.

Ⅱ.阅读七选五
Earthquakes can strike without warning. But many injuries and deaths from this kind of natural disaster can be prevented if people follow these basic guidelines.
If you're inside a building, stay there! One of the most dangerous things to do in an earthquake is to try to leave a building. 1 Getting under a strong table (or similar piece of furniture) is a good way to protect yourself if you're inside a building. You can also get to a corner formed by two walls with your arms over your head.If you're in bed when the quake hits, stay there and cover your head with a pillow.
2 It is vital(至关重要的) to be as far away from buildings as possible.Avoid anything else that could fall, like trees, street lights.Ground movement seldom causes injury directly. Most injuries and deaths result from collapsing(倒塌的) walls, and falling objects.
If you're in a moving vehicle, stop as quickly as possible, away from overpasses, buildings, bridges or anything else that might fall or collapse beneath you. 3
A working cell phone will allow you to call for help; remember to charge the battery. 4 So it should be used only as a last way to let rescuers know where you are.Tapping on a pipe or wall, or blowing a whistle(吹哨) if you have one is a better method.
Be prepared for aftershocks. 5 However, sometimes they even happen months later. Therefore, if you are not in a secure position after the first shock, you should move quickly but carefully to a safer place.
A.Stay inside the vehicle.
B.Most buildings can't stand a big quake.
C.If you're outside, get into an open space.
D.Shouting can cause you to breathe in dust.
E.Often the walls fall down and hurt people seriously.
F.Take a good hold of your cellphone in the building.
G.They can occur in the first hours after the earthquake.
