By the end of this class, students will be able to: (1)use words and phrases related to health, such as diet, weight, fitness, positive, stress, abuse, consume, digest, work out. (2)talk about health problems and habits. (3)voice opinions on how to live a healthy life. Vegetables for you and me,让学生跟 着唱,并试着把里面涉及的英语单词 carrot, cabbage, broccoli, potato, spinach, celery, garlic, onion, leek 记下来,然后让学生根据图片提示完成对应的 crosswords 游戏(图 7-7)。 Is health important for us? Why? 第七章 基于诊断测评开展的补偿性教学课例 175 << n. v. adj./adv. phrases fitness diet stress stadium/gym strength g a r l i c , o n i o n , pepper calorie vitamin pill/drug flu … injure jog abuse reward refresh examine absorb consume chew … positive negative slim (un)fit dizzy sugary dynamic pessimistic … work out lose heart give up make a difference consist of be composed of rely on decide on make up one’s mind stressed out worn out … Task 3 Review the texts Unit 3 Sports and Fitness—Going Positive Fill in the blanks with proper words. In today’s fast-paced world, it is easy to neglect our health in pursuit of success and happiness. However, maintaining a healthy lifestyle should be a top priority for everyone. A healthy lifestyle not only helps us feel better physically and mentally but also reduces the risk of chronic diseases and improves our overall quality of life. Firstly, a healthy diet is essential for good health. Eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and proteins can help us maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer, and boost our immune system. It is also important to limit our intake of processed foods, sugary drinks, and alcohol, as they can have negative effects on our health. Secondly, regular exercise is crucial for maintaining good health. Exercise not only helps us stay physically fit but also has numerous mental health benefits. It can reduce >> 180 高中英语单元教学设计 stress, anxiety, and depression, improve our mood, and boost our self-esteem. The recommended amount of exercise for adults is at least 150 minutes’ walking, cycling, or swimming per week. Thirdly, getting enough sleep is essential for good health. Lack of sleep can lead to a range of health problems, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and depression. Most adults need between 7 ~ 9 hours of sleep per night to function at their best. Establishing a regular sleep routine and creating a relaxing bedtime environment can help improve the quality of our sleep. Fourthly, managing stress is crucial for maintaining good health. Chronic stress can have negative effects on our physical and mental health, increasing the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and depression. Finding healthy ways to manage stress, such as practicing mindfulness, yoga, or meditation, can help reduce its negative effects on our health. Finally, avoiding harmful substances such as tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption is essential for good health. Smoking is one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide, while excessive alcohol consumption can lead to liver disease, cancer, and other health problems. Quitting smoking and limiting alcohol intake can significantly improve our health and increase our lifespan. In conclusion, a healthy lifestyle is essential for good health and well-being. By making small changes to our daily habits, such as eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, managing stress, and avoiding harmful substances, we can improve our physical and mental health and enjoy a higher quality of life. Remember, good health is the foundation for a happy and fulfilling life. Unit 5 Working the Land Using Language Listening Text Host: Good morning, listeners. Today is World Food Day, and David Bond from the UN’s FAO is here to talk to us about world hunger. Welcome, David! Please explain what the FAO is and what its aims are. David: Good morning. For those who don’t know, FAO stands for Food and Agriculture Organization. And our aim is simple—to eliminate world hunger, which, according to our latest figures, stands at around 11% of the world’s population. Host: So I guess things like droughts, floods, and climate change are all major factors in this. David: Yes, that’s right, they can all seriously affect crop production. And another factor is poverty. There is strong evidence to suggest that many people just can’t afford to eat well. And it’s not just about having enough food to eat; 183 << people need to eat enough nutritious food, which often they cannot afford or do not have access to. The FAO believes everyone should have the right to healthy food. Host: And what about war? I’ve seen many researchers say that it directly leads to mass hunger. David: Absolutely true. Our research indicates that wars can heavily affect food production and transportation, meaning that millions of people have to go hungry. Host: So what can we do to alleviate world hunger? David: Well, the UN is making efforts to reduce climate change, and the FAO runs a project called Climate-Smart Agriculture, which helps countries to develop sustainable agriculture. However, every country needs to focus on making new achievements in agriculture, too, which can often benefit the whole world. Like China, for example, whose development of hybrid rice has greatly increased rice production in many other countries. And, of course, global conflict must be eliminated. And don’t forget that we as individuals can also make a difference: buy food that supports the environment and never waste food. Host: David Bond, thank you very much. Just a quick message to our listeners: You can find more information on world hunger on the FAO website... (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO)的官员 David Bond 受电台节目邀请与主持人展开对话交流。 By the end of the class, students will be able to: (1)summarize the theme of the interview. (2)explain the world hunger problem and its causes. (3)explore the solutions to the world hunger problem. (4)cultivate the awareness of taking actions for the world hunger problem. Lead-in (1) Teacher (T) share with students (Ss) some photos taken by Ss who took part in World Food Prize Youth Institute. T invites other Ss to guess what they are doing in the pictures and where the photos are taken. Ss Guess and share that they are having a banquet and the photos are taken in America. (2)T invite Ss to attend a banquet together and introduce the four parts of the banquet: seating arrangements, banquet theme, banquet contents and group photo. Task 1 Listen for theme T invites Ss to listen to the interview and take notes for key words to infer the theme of today’s banquet. Task 2 Listen for information (1)T introduces to Ss the three sections of today’s banquet: introduction of guests, problems and causes, solutions and actions. T asks Ss to guess the meaning of H, C and F, which stand for hunger, countries and FAO. Then T makes Ss listen to the first part of the interview for more information about F group by answering two questions: What is FAO? What is the aim of FAO? T invites Ss to paraphrase the new word “eliminate” by context. (2)T makes Ss listen to the second part of the interview for the causes of world hunger. Then T Invites Ss to share the specific reasons of their hunger based on their present status (officials from the UN, officials from China, officials from Africa, teenagers in India, poor farmers from Africa, shopkeepers from Ukraine, people suffer from a severe famine, earthquake victims, etc.). Task 3 Listen and summarize (1) Listen to the third part of the interview for solutions of world hunger. T reminds Ss to focus on who can help alleviate world hunger when listening for the first time. (2)Listen to this part again and reminds Ss to focus on how to alleviate world hunger this time. (3)Make Ss discuss for more measures to solve the world hunger problem and share. (4)Motivates Ss to consider and share the interaction of solutions and causes of world hunger. Task 4 Discuss and share T invites Ss to do a group discussion with the following requirements. There is little doubt that Earth is getting warmer and warmer. A warming ocean and atmosphere along with melting ice and rising sea levels provide evidence of a dramatic change in the global climate. In 2013, a lot of people were shocked by a news photo of a dead polar bear that was found on Norway’s Arctic island of Svalbard. According to the scientists who found its dead body, all that remained of the polar bear was “skin and bones”. An expert who has studied polar bears for many years said that from the position of its dead body, the bear appeared to have starved and died. Experts claimed that low sea-ice levels caused by climate change meant the bear could not hunt seals as before, so it had to travel greater distances in order to find food. This alarming case showed how the increase in temperature had an impact on Earth’s ecology. Then what is causing the increase in the global average surface temperature? Climate scientists often mention a key climate process called the “greenhouse effect”, which has two common meanings: the “natural” greenhouse effect and the “man-made” greenhouse effect. The “natural” greenhouse effect refers to the fact that heat from the >> 192 高中英语单元教学设计 sun enters the atmosphere and warms Earth’s surface as short-wave radiation. The heat is released back into space at longer wave lengths. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as methane and carbon dioxide, trap some of the heat, keeping Earth’s climate warm and habitable. Without this process, Earth could not sustain life. However, the “man-made” greenhouse effect has now become a big problem. When people produce huge amounts of extra greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels, more heat energy is trapped in the atmosphere and causes Earth’s surface temperature to rise quickly. There is strong and comprehensive evidence that the rise in temperature has led to an increase in extreme weather and natural disasters worldwide, not only causing serious damage, but also costing human lives. Climate scientists have warned that if we do not take appropriate actions, this warming trend will probably continue and there will be a higher price to pay. In fact, news reports are frequently broadcast about extreme rainstorms and heatwaves causing deaths and economic losses. Continued greenhouse gas emissions will result in further warming and long- lasting changes to the global climate. This requires the attention of people all over the world. Governments need to consider making policies and taking appropriate actions and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We as individuals can also reduce our “carbon footprint” by restricting the amount of carbon dioxide our lifestyles produce. It is our responsibility to seize every opportunity to educate everyone about global warming, along with its causes and impacts, because this is the most serious issue affecting all of us on this planet. So what will you do to help? By the end of the class, students will be able to: (1)recognize the structure of the passage and summarize the gist of each paragraph. The Indians were in full strength. They were magnificent to look at, but terrible in their cruelty. A young English officer was set upon by two Indians each armed with a hatchet (small axe). He saw that escape was impossible, and decided to fight back at least. As he struck at the two Indians, a third approached. He was a noble-looking old man armed with a bow and arrow. As he came forward, he slowly put an arrow to his bow. The young Englishman expected the arrow to pierce his heart before the hatchets crashed through his skull. The old man came nearer and raised the bow to aim, but suddenly a strange expression appeared on his face; he put his bow down. No sooner did the two Indians behold the old man than they stopped their attack, and, after receiving some commands from him, tied the young Englishman to a tree. Later on he was released, and, to his surprise and wonder, the officer found himself treated most kindly by the old man. The Indian, instead of killing him or leading him away with threats, encouraged him by signs and smiles not to fear. He took the young man by the hand and led him to a distant Indian camp. It was now impossible to fight as it was mid-winter. The Englishman found himself treated with the greatest kindness and courtesy by the strange old Indian man. He did not understand what had earned him this treatment. The old man, who very often looked at
