The Old Man and the Sea(《老人与海》)。
On the next circle the fish’s beck was out but he was a little too far from the boat.
On the next circle he was still too far away but he was higher out of water and the old
man was sure that by gaining some more line he could have him alongside. He had
rigged his harpoon long before and its coil of light rope was in a round basket and the
end was made fast to the bit in the bow.
The fish was coming in on his circle now calm and beautiful looking and only his
great tail moving. The old man pulled on him all that he could to bring him closer. For
just a moment the fish turned a little on his side.
Then he straightened himself and began another circle.
“I moved him,” the old man said. “I moved him then.”
He felt faint again now but he held on the great fish all the strain that he could. I
moved him, he thought. Maybe this time I can get him over.
Pull, hands, he thought. Hold up, legs. Last for me, head. Last for me.
But when he put all of his effort on, starting it well out before the fish came
alongside and pulling with all his strength, the fish pulled part way over and then righted
himself and swam away.
“Fish,” the old man said. “Fish, you are going to have to die anyway. Do you have
to kill me too?”

That way nothing is accomplished, he thought. His mouth was too dry to speak
but he could not reach for the water now. I must get him alongside this time, he
thought. I am not good for many more turns. Yes you are, he told himself. You’re
good for ever.
On the next turn, he nearly had him. But again the fish righted himself and swam
slowly away. You are killing me, fish, the old man thought. But you have a right to.
Never have I seen a greater, or more beautiful, or a calmer or more noble thing than you,
brother. Come on and kill me.I do not care who kills who. Now you are getting confused
in the head, he thought. You must keep your head dear. Keep your head clear and know
how to suffer like a man. Or a fish, he thought.
“Clear up, head,” he said in a voice he could hardly hear. “Clear up.”
I do not know, the old man thought. He had been on the point of feeling himself go
each time. I do not know. But I will try it once more.
He tried it once more and he felt himself going when he turned the fish.
The fish righted himself and swam off again slowly with the great tail weaving in
the air.
I’ll try it again, the old man promised, although his hands were mushy now and he
could only see well in flashes.
He tried it again and it was the same.So he thought, and he felt himself going before
he started; I will try it once again.
He took all his pain and what was left of his strength and his long gone pride and
he put it against the fish’s agony and the fish came over onto his side and swam gently
on his side, his bill almost touching the planking of the skiff and started to pass the boat,
long, deep, wide, silver and barred with purple and interminable in the water.
The old man dropped the line and put his foot on it and lifted the harpoon as
high as he could and drove it down with all his strength, and more strength he had just
summoned, into the fish’s side just behind the great chest fin that rose high in the air
to the altitude of the man’s chest. He felt the iron go in and he leaned on it and drove it
further and then pushed all his weight after it.
Then the fish came alive, with his death in him, and rose high out of the water
showing all his great length and width and all his power and his beauty. He seemed to
hang in the air above the old man in the skiff. Then he fell into the water with a crash

that sent spray over the old man and over all of the skiff. The old man felt faint and sick
and he could not see well. But he cleared the harpoon line and let it run slowly through
his raw hands and, when he could see, he saw the fish was on his back with his silver
belly up.
The shaft of the harpoon was projecting at an angle from the fish’s shoulder and the
sea was flowing with the red of the blood from his heart. First it was dark as a shoal in
the blue water that was more than a mile deep. Then it spread like a cloud. The fish was
silvery and still and floated with the waves.
He looked up at the sky and then out to his fish. He looked at the sun carefully. It
is not much more than noon, he thought. And the trade wind is rising. The lines all mean
nothing now. The boy and I will splice them when we are home.
Instead he lay there wallowing now in the seas and the old man pulled the skiff
upon to him. When he was even with him and had the fish’s head against the bow he
could not believe his size. But he untied the harpoon rope from the bit, passed it through
the fish’s gills and out his jaws, made a turn around his sword then passed the rope
through the other gill, made another turn around the bill and knotted the double rope
and made it fast to the bit in the bow. He cut the rope then and went astern to noose the
tail.
The fish had turned silver from his original purple and silver, and the stripes
showed the same pale violet colour as his tail. They were wider than a man’s hand with
his fingers spread and the fish’s eye looked as detached as the mirrors in a periscope or
as a saint in a procession.
“It was the only way to kill him,” the old man said. He was feeling better since
the water and he knew he would not go away and his head was clear. He’s over fifteen
hundred pounds the way he is, he thought.
Maybe we have them without knowing of it. He made the fish fast to bow and
stern and to the middle thwart. He was so big it was like lashing a much bigger skiff
alongside. He cut a piece of line and tied the fish’s lower jaw against his bill so his
mouth would not open.

Auggie is a ten-year-old boy who was born with a facial deformity and has
undergone 27 surgeries. Since he used to get sick a lot, his mom Isabel homeschooled
him. Auggie’s mother believed that homeschooling was more suitable for him.
As he approached fifth grade, Isabel and Nate, Auggie’s father, decided to enroll
him in a private middle school— Beecher Prep. Mom thought they shouldn’t keep
protecting him and they should help him to deal with the reality.
When Auggie learned that he was going to school, he burst into tears. “Everyone
will stare at me at school,” He cried.
Mom put her hand on his hand. “You know if you don’t want to do this, you don’t
have to. But we spoke to the principal there and told him about you and he really wants
to meet you.”
“What did you tell him about me?” he asked.
“How funny you are, and how kind and smart. When I told him you read Dragon
Rider when you were six, he was like, ‘Wow, I have to meet this kid.’ ”

Before the school year began, Auggie met with Mr. Tushman, the principal, who
organized a tour for him with three other students: Jack Will, Julian Albans and Charlotte
Cody. Mr. Tushman made a very good impression on him.
Jack Will is nice to him and had good behaviors.
Charlotte was outgoing and confident. She recommended him many things about
the school.
Julian was completely different from their personalities. In fact, he was very
unfriendly. First, he was confused about Auggie’s face. Then he asked him if he knew
simple things like the blackboard, eraser, etc. These made others feel awkward.
He continued asking Auggie questions about his education. Learning that he was
homeschooled by his mom, he believed Auggie’s mother wasn’t expert. He said, “How
can someone who’s not a real teacher actually teach science?” He believed they couldn’t
do experiments.
Julian asked Auggie, “What’s the deal with your face? I mean, were you in a fire on
something?”
“Julian, that’s so rude!” said Charlotte.
Auggie was annoyed. Jack told Julian to shut up and debated with him to stop his
rude behavior.” He and Auggie exchanged smiles. He became a good partner of Auggie.
The moment Auggie and mom got home, he ran to his room and threw himself onto
his bed.
Mom was confused about what was up. When he told her what had happened, she
was obviously shocked.
She said “Wasn’t the boy with the dark hair that was brushed forward nice?”
Auggie said “No, he isn’t nice.”
“So is he the kind of kid who’s one way in front of adults and another in front of
Kids?”
“Yeah, I guess.”
“You just have to be a bigger person, so be brave, concentrating on your own
business.”
Auggies nodded and said with determination, “I’ll go to school.”
The first day of school Auggie was so nervous that the butterflies in his stomach
were more like pigeons flying around his insides. Mom and Dad were probably a little

课题 Wonder — The first day of school

gave many suggestions ( 建议 ) to his king. But the king didn’t listen to him.
At last, Qin ( 秦国 ) conquered ( 战胜 ) Chu. Qu Yuan was very sad. He jumped into
the Miluo River ( 汨罗江 ) in Hunan on the fifth day of the fifth month.
The people of Chu loved Qu Yuan very much. They rowed boats in the river to look
for Qu Yuan. But sadly, they couldn’t find him. They didn’t want the fish in the river to
eat Qu Yuan. So they threw ( 扔 ) zongzi into the river to feed ( 喂 ) the fish.
From then on, every year on this day, people eat zongzi and race dragon boat to
remember Qu Yuan.
Little bags
People wear perfumed ( 香的 ) little bags on the Dragon Boat Festival. These bags
are made of ( 由 …… 制 成 ) colorful cloth and threads. There is medicine in the bags.
People think wearing the bags can keep them healthy and bring them good luck.
Delicious zongzi

Zongzi is the most popular food on the Dragon Boat Festival. How do people make
zongzi? People use bamboo leaves to wrap ( 包 ) rice and use thread to tie it tight. They
also wrap many other foods in the leaves.
People in different places have different tastes ( 口味 ). In some parts of southern
China, people like eating meat zongzi. In the north, people often put sweet bean paste (豆

Row! Row!
As the name shows, dragon boat race is a very important part of the Dragon Boat
Festival. Several teams row their dragon-like boats as fast as they can. The first team to
reach the finish line wins.
Apart from ( 除……之外 ) the people who row the boat, there are also three other

You’re probably familiar with the 1993 movie Farewell My Concubine (《
姬》) directed by Chen Kaige. The film tells the story of two Peking Opera performers
who train together from childhood to perform the opera Farewell My Concubine. But
many of us may not be so familiar with the opera itself.
One of the masterpieces ( 杰作 ) of traditional Peking Opera, Farewell My Concubine
is based on an event from 202 BC. In that year, Xiang Yu and Liu Bang were fighting for
the throne ( 王位 ) after the fall of the Qin Dynasty. With his army surrounded by Liu’s
forces, Xiang found himself in a desperate (绝望的 ) situation. To show her loyalty (忠诚 )
to Xiang during this terrible time, his concubine Yu Ji committed suicide ( 自杀 ) rather
than risk ( 冒险 ) being caught by the enemy.

But it isn’t simply the story itself that makes the opera famous but the great actors
who have played its roles.
The part of Yu Ji, for instance, was once played by one of the most outstanding
Peking Opera performers, Mei Lanfang (1894—1961). It used to be common in Peking
Opera for male performers to play female characters. And Mei’s capacity ( 能力 ) to play
women and sing like women was what brought Yu Ji to life.
But Peking Opera is about far more than singing. Li Shengshu, a Chinese Peking
Opera performer, once told the Guardian, “You have to be good at everything: singing,
acting, acrobatics ( 杂技 ).” He explained the special approach needed for Peking Opera,
“It begins with the breath. You have to lift your spirit. Even backstage, you perform.”
This kind of commitment by the performers helped Peking Opera win international
fame ( 名声 ). In recognition of its contribution ( 贡献 ) to culture, it was added to the
UNESCO Intangible World Heritage ( 非物质文化遗产 ) list in 2010.
During the 21st Beijing Music Festival in October, Farewell My Concubine was
given a new look. Interactive technology and 3-D displays were used to show that this two-
century-old opera is still relevant today. It is part of a general effort to renew Peking Opera.
Indeed, the opera has evolved ( 发展 ) over time: It has been performed in many different
ways and by many different performers. But what does not change, like Peking Opera as a
whole, is its essentially ( 本质上 ) Chinese cultural character.
A key to Peking Opera
One of the most important elements ( 元素 ) of Peking Opera is lianpu. Actors’ faces
are painted differently to represent different characteristics ( 特点 ).
Black-painted faces, for example, indicate ( 象征 ) honesty. Bao Zheng, an upright
( 正直的 ) official ( 官员 ) during Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), has a black face
in Peking Opera.
Red-painted faces indicate loyalty. Guan Yu, who was one of the best generals in
the Three Kingdoms period (220—280) always has a red face on stage on account of his
loyalty.
Yellow-painted faces indicate brutality ( 残忍 ). Dian Wei, a general in Cao Cao’s
army in the Three Kingdoms period was a brutal man and so the actor who plays him has
a yellow face in performances.
White stands for cunningness ( 奸猾 ), which is why characters with such personalities

“二十四节气”成功列入联合国非遗名单
Our grandparents seem to have magic powers sometimes. Give them a Chinese
lunar calendar ( 农历 ), and they will know what the weather will be like days or even
months later.
What’s the secret? They are following the 24 Solar Terms ( 节气 ), which are an important
part of Chinese culture. And on Nov 30, the United Nations (UN) added it to the List of
the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
The 24 Solar Terms came into being during the Qin (221—206 BC) and Han (206 BC—AD
220) dynasties. At that time, most Chinese people made their living on farms. So, weather
changes were important. But of course, they had no satellite ( 卫 星 ), internet or weather
broadcast to help them.
But people found a way. They studied the sun’s movement with a sundial (日晷仪 ).
They also paid attention to other natural changes such as air temperature, water and crop
growth. In the end, they worked out 24 solar terms to mark the changes.
The terms became their guide to farming work. For example, the solar term jingzhe
( 惊蛰 ) is when insects wake up from a long sleep in the cold winter. Farmers take it as
a sign of warm weather and get busy working.
The 24 Solar Terms is honored as China’s fifth great invention, after papermaking,
printing, the compass and gunpowder. Now, people still use the solar terms in daily life. For
example, people will say, “Do not show your feet after hanlu ( 寒露脚不露 )”. Why? It’s
because the solar term hanlu marks the coming of cold days!

Tai chi balances our bodies

Most people think martial arts ( 武术 ) are all about kicking, punching ( 用拳打 ) and
fighting. But tai chi is the other way around. It is slow, calm ( 镇静的 ), and peaceful.
UNESCO recently added tai chi to its Intangible Cultural Heritage List
Although tai chi is an ancient martial art, it is still quite popular today. It
has over 100 million fans in more than 150 countries.
People do tai chi as a way to stay fit. Unlike other exercises, it is “soft” – the
muscles are not tensed ( 紧的 ), the joints ( 关节 ) are not fully bent ( 弯曲的 ), and you
don’t need to stretch ( 拉伸 ) too much. This means many can do it. You can practice it
almost anytime and anywhere, as no equipment is needed. It is believed that practicing
tai chi can help us have better control of our bodies so that we can stand, walk, and run
better.
But tai chi’s benefits ( 益处 ) go beyond the physical. Marleni Calcina, a Peruvian
woman who has practiced tai chi for more than 10 years, says it’s not only a sport, but
also a way of life. Tai chi has taught her the value ( 价值 ) of living more slowly.
Life and work used to stress her out. But she began to feel a change thanks to tai
chi, which helped her “gain ( 获得 ) peace and inner harmony ( 内心的和谐 ),” as she
told Xinhua. “For me now, practicing tai chi is like speaking with my soul ( 灵魂 ).”
Tai chi Q & A
Q: Why is tai chi so slow?
A: During slow movements ( 动作 ), we can focus on ( 专注于 ) our hands and feet.
We can control them better. Slow movements also allow us to take deep, long breaths.
This is good for our bodies.
Q: What does the black and white tai chi symbol mean?
A: There is a white spot ( 圆点 ) in the black area and a black spot in the white area.
It means there is no absolute ( 绝对的 ) good or bad. We need to keep a healthy balance
( 平衡 ) in all things.
Q: Can I lose weight by doing tai chi?
A: Yes. You will burn about 250 calories if you practice it for an hour.
Q: Who brought tai chi to the US?
A: The first public tai chi performance in the US was in 1954 by Sophia Delza, a
professional dancer. She became fascinated by tai chi during a trip to Beijing. In 1961,
she published ( 出版 ) the first English book about tai chi.

Chinese shadow puppetry ( 皮影戏 ) has been added to the List of the Intangible Cultural
Heritage of Humanity ( 人类非物质文化遗产代表作名录 ), according a UNESCO statement
on November 27. The decision was made by the Intergovernmental Committee for the
Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage, which met in Bali, Indonesia.
The committee decided to recognize puppetry as a way of spreading knowledge and
promoting cultural values, as well as a form of community ( 社区 ) and especially youth
entertainment.
Chinese shadow puppetry is a form of theater with a history of around 2,000 years.
It was believed to have been invented by a minister of one of the Han emperors in
memory of his deceased wife.
In a shadow puppet show, colorful silhouette ( 剪影 ) figures perform traditional plays
against a backlit ( 从背后照亮的 ) cloth screen, accompanied by music and singing. Shadow
puppets were first made of paper, then from the hides ( 兽皮 ) of donkeys or oxen. This is
why the Chinese word for shadow puppet is pi ying, which means shadows of hides.

Saving the Mogao Caves
UNESCO Honors Fan Jinshi for her Great Contribution
On Sept 7, famous Chinese archaeologist Fan Jinshi, 85, was awarded by UNESCO
for her contribution to the protection of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang.
Called the “daughter of Dunhuang”, her story with the caves started 60 years ago.
In 1963, Fan, then a 25-year-old Peking University graduate, had the chance to work at
the Mogao Caves, a place she had wanted to explore for a long time.
“Seeing Dunhuang for the first time was breathtaking. But only when truly staying
here did I realize that inside the caves is a world of divine beauty while outside is a land
of blowing sand and yellow earth,” Fan told Gansu Daily.
Back in those days, the Mogao Caves were almost completely cut off from the
world. Fan and her coworkers had to live in mud houses and drink salty water. They
stayed inside the caves to do research, copy murals ( 壁画 ), and do whatever they could
to protect and restore them.
In 2011, after 40 years of hard work, a report on 10 Mogao Caves compiled ( 编写 )
by Fan’s team was finally published. It was known as China’s first professional report
on cave archaeology, reported Gansu Daily.
As time passed, Fan found a serious problem. The increasing number of tourists
visiting Dunhuang might harm the caves, causing the murals inside to fade. A solution
needed to be found to preserve Dunhuang’s heritage.
In the late 1980s, Fan stumbled upon computer technology by chance. She realized
that this might preserve the Mogao Caves forever. After over 30 years of exploration,
the Dunhuang Academy built a digital database to protect cultural relics there, allowing
