She felt the weight of her actions and the missed opportunity deeply. Sensing her depression, her father approached her with a comforting presence. Zora told her failure to her father, after which her father gently explained that acknowledging one’s mistakes was an important part of personal growth. He emphasized that true success wasn’t about never failing, but learning from those failures. He also proposed that Zora deliver a new speech in front of her class, reflecting on the authentic journey to success. The next day, Zora went to school and apologized to her class. She then asked her teacher and classmates if she could give another speech in her class. They responded to her with warm applause. After careful preparation, Zora delivered a heartfelt speech about the importance of hard work and perseverance. Her classmates and teacher listened carefully, and showed their support and understanding with gentle nods. Through this experience, Zora learned a valuable lesson. Success is not just about talent or past achievements; it requires continuous effort and preparation. 1.Where did the man go yesterday? Through history women have made hundreds of scientific breakthroughs. They have a sixth sense that enables them to pick out more important clues. But many of the female scientists are missing from public view. The more I do this research, the more I  realize that women are at the heart of some of the most important developments in science. For example, Rosalind Franklin contributed much to the discovery of the structure of DNA. And the work of Margaret Wilcox, an American engineer, was crucial to the development of the air conditioner in cars. Each season, we'll explore and celebrate the life and work of one woman who shaped our world view. And we'll explore some of the reasons why you might not know her name. We'll be looking at the barriers these women faced, as well as their passion and drive. Join us as we honor these remarkable stories you may not know. A Ever dreamed of helping elephants in Thailand, discovering the tropical landscape of Cuba, or experiencing your very own Shark Week in the oceanic landscape of Fiji? If you’re a teenager looking for a break from classroom studies and summer jobs participate in one of these volunteer travel programs for high schoolers!(有没有梦想过在泰国帮助大象,发现古巴的热带景观,或者在斐济的海洋景观中体验你自己的鲨鱼周? B Many philosophers and psychologists have argued that empathy (共情) is a natural characteristic, hard-wired into our genes and brains. The reasoning goes that each of us has a “level” of empathy and—like our adult height—we’re stuck there for life. This is all well and good if you’re already empathetic, but also means that if you struggle with empathy, you’ll never improve no matter how hard you try. Thankfully, this view is incomplete. Through the right practices, such as diverse friendships and even fiction reading, we can grow our empathy on purpose. Empathy is something like a muscle: left unused, it weakens; put to work, it grows. No emotion is always useful, and that goes for empathy as well. This is especially true for nurses, doctors and other caregivers. These individuals are driven to their work by a deep desire to help others. Patients of empathetic doctors are more satisfied with their care. However, when healthcare professionals care too much, they are at high risk of burnout, tiredness and depression from over-empathizing with others’ suffering. Some psychologists, including myself, are now exploring how people in these professions might empathize in more sustainable ways. For example, empathetic concern-feeling for someone—is distant from emotional empathy—feeling as someone else does. If they can develop concern instead, for example, they can care without falling apart. In another set of studies conducted with Carol Dweek, a Stanford professor of psychology, we found that merely believing empathy is a skill that can be developed inspired people to try harder at it. For instance, people who were encouraged to have a “growth mindset” around empathy, as compared to a fixed mindset, spent more time listening to the suffering of someone of another race and more energy towards trying to understand the opinions of someone from a different part of the political divide. 24.What view do many philosophers and psychologists have about empathy? A.It grows when practiced often. B.It is a result of individual experiences. C.It is inborn and difficult to develop. D.It varies depending on one’s upbringing. 25.What does the author suggest doctors do? A.Develop their emotional empathy. B.Try to erase their patients’ concern. C.Care for their patients as much as possible. D.Work on improving their empathetic concern. 26.Based on Carol Dweek’s studies in which situation are people willingly empathetic? A.If they believe that empathy is flexible. B.If they are given enough attention. C.If they listen to the identical political views. D.If they suffer racial discrimination. 27.In which unit of a textbook does the text most likely appear? A.Understanding yourself more. B.Feeling for others. C.Exploring genes and emotions. D.Repairing broken relationships. 根据第一段“Many philosophers and psychologists have argued that empathy (共情) is a natural characteristic, hard-wired into our genes and brains.(许多哲学家和心理学家认为,同理心是一种自然特征,根植于我们的基因和大脑中。)”和“This is all well and good if you’re already empathetic, but also means that if you struggle with empathy, you’ll never improve no matter how hard you try.(如果你已经有同理心,这一切都很好,但也意味着如果你在同理心方面挣扎,无论你多么努力,你都永远不会提高。)” 根据第三段中的“However, when healthcare professionals care too much, they are at high risk of burnout, tiredness and depression from over-empathizing with others’ suffering.(然而,当医疗保健专业人员过于关心时,他们很有可能因过度同情他人的痛苦而感到倦怠、疲倦和抑郁。)” 再根据第四段中的“For example, empathetic concern-feeling for someone—is distant from emotional empathy—feeling as someone else does. If they can develop concern instead, for example, they can care without falling apart.(例如,移情关怀——对某人的感觉——与情感移情——像别人一样的感觉是有距离的。 根据最后一段中的“In another set of studies conducted with Carol Dweek, a Stanford professor of psychology, we found that merely believing empathy is a skill that can be developed inspired people to try harder at it.(在与斯坦福大学心理学教授Carol Dweek进行的另一组研究中,我们发现,仅仅相信同理心是一种可以培养的技能,就能激励人们更加努力地去做这件事。)” 故选A。 27. 通读全文,尤其是第二段“Through the right practices, such as diverse friendships and even fiction reading, we can grow our empathy on purpose. Empathy is something like a muscle: left unused, it weakens; put to work, it grows.(通过正确的做法,比如不同的友谊,甚至小说阅读,我们可以有意地培养我们的同理心。 B。 C Were you to join a marathon, you might think you’d wander into a nightmare. Mouths kept shut, runners cover miles breathing just through their noses — sometimes holding their breath for quite a while. Beyond adopting a new technique, marathon runners can expect to see an improvement by reviewing on the breathing basics. Studies suggest that 10 percent to 14 percent of women are shallow breathers, over-breathers or mouth-breathers, all of which could restrict movement of the ribcage and create a build-up of tension in the upper body and tightness in the chest. And while this may not bother you when you’re sitting at your desk, it’s a different story when you begin a workout. The biggest mistake that Professor Dickinson sees is when athletes want to maintain-or pick up- speed. “When you’re working harder, you don’t tell your heart to beat faster. It just knows that it needs to,” he says, adding that the same is true of your breathing. He explains that your body is built with neurons called chemoreceptors, which tell your muscles when they need to breathe more. So how should you be breathing during an intense workout? Professor Dickinson recommends athletes take basic breath pattern mastery, before moving on to respiratory muscle  training. “Some people accept that the breathlessness they experience when exercising is just their norms and that they’ve reached the limit they can push themselves to in their workouts,” says Professor Dickinson. But committing to these techniques, he explains, could be impactful on your performance. However, those who have high blood pressure, should check their conditions before getting to work on their breath. “In some cases, it could be that you’re only breathing at 80 percent of your capacity, so increasing that percentage by practicing breathing exercises can have a huge impact on your fitness performance,” Professor Dickinson adds. The results just might be breathtaking. 28.Why does the author compare a marathon to a nightmare? A.Because they are both long in distance. B.Because they are both time-consuming. C.Because people in both situations need a new technique. D.Because people in both situations breathe in similar ways. 29.According to Professor Dickinson, what will happen when you’re working out harder? A.You will make the biggest mistake. B.You will adjust your heartbeat intentionally. C.Neurons will tell your muscles to breathe more. D.The heart will know it needs to work. 30.What should high blood pressure patients do before working on their breath? A.Have a health check. B.Make a workout plan. C.Track their performances. D.Check their blood pressure meters. 31.Who is the passage intended for? A.People with high blood pressure. B.Marathon enthusiasts. C.Office ladies. D.Health consultants. 根据第一段“Were you to join a marathon, you might think you’d wander into a nightmare. Mouths kept shut, runners cover miles breathing just through their noses — sometimes holding their breath for quite a while.”(如果你参加马拉松,你可能会认为你会陷入一场噩梦。 根据第二段最后两句““When you’re working harder, you don’t tell your heart to beat faster. It just knows that it needs to,” he says, adding that the same is true of your breathing. He explains that your body is built with neurons called chemoreceptors, which tell your muscles when they need to breathe more.”(“当你更努力地跑步时,你不会让自己的心跳加快。 根据最后一段第三句“However, those who have high blood pressure, should check their conditions before getting to work on their breath.”(然而,那些有高血压的人,在开始练习呼吸之前应该检查他们的情况。) 故选A项。 31. 根据第一段“Were you to join a marathon, you might think you’d wander into a nightmare. Mouths kept shut, runners cover miles breathing just through their noses — sometimes holding their breath for quite a while.”(如果你参加马拉松,你可能会认为你会陷入一场噩梦。 及第二段第一句“Beyond adopting a new technique, marathon runners can expect to see an improvement by reviewing on the breathing basics.”(除了采用新技术之外,马拉松运动员还可以通过回顾呼吸基础知识来期望看到进步。)及第三段第一句“So how should you be breathing during an intense workout?”(那么,在高强度运动中,你应该如何呼吸呢?) D In a digital, global world where thinking critically and generating new ideas count, a cradle-to-career approach to educating children must be mindful of how children learn to learn, not just what they learn. The Intellectual Lives of Children allows readers to look into the minds of kids as they explore and learn in everyday moments, emphasizing what constitutes real learning. Children are born with playful curiosity. They ask questions about everything — Why does a tree have leaves? Why does the Sun come up? These questions help children discover the causal relationships among things — all with the guidance of adults. Yet explorations take time. As Engel writes, “when children are allowed to dive into a topic thoroughly, they connect unrelated facts and generate new ideas.” The real mental work takes place as they play — when a child builds a platform of chairs to get cookies from an out-of-reach cookie box. Hidden in these moments are strengthened curiosity and innovation. Hurried parents often lack the ability to allow that time, fearing that their children might be late for their next scheduled activity. “It becomes clear that the educational system in U. S. does not concern itself with children’s intellectual lives,” warns Engel in the book. Instead, she hopes to reimagine schools as “idea factories” built on inspiring curiosity: “Imagine assessing students progress under some new headings: poses interesting questions, ... and spends time solving them. In one lovely example, Engel describes a teacher who challenged her students to construct a record- breaking straw chain measuring 3.8 miles. “Winning would be fun, but the cognitive (认知的) benefits would be far-reaching,” explains the teacher, whose goal was to help the children better understand the depth of the Mariana Trench. With scientific insight and vivid examples, Engel’s book offers tips for how to make the learning more apparent. She encourages parents to see children as active thinkers and suggests that by asking open-ended questions and letting them explore, children will be better prepared for a complex and ever-changing world. 32.How will children’s playful curiosity become real learning? A.By giving kids a time limit. B.By planning out extra activities. C.By remembering casual facts. D.By allowing kids to fully explore. 33.What’s Engel’s attitude toward American educational system? A.Critical. B.Unclear. C.Unconcerned. D.Tolerant. 34.What is special about Engel’s book? A.It presents a complicated world. B.It promotes scheduled activities. C.It combines science and practice. D.It features open- ended questions. 35.What is the best title for the text? A.Fun Inspires Kids’ Curiosity B.Play Develops Better Thinkers C.Learning Feeds Young Minds D.Hurried Parents Teach Kids Well 【答案】32.D 33.A 34.C 35.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第二段中“Children are born with playful curiosity. They ask questions about everything — Why does a tree have leaves? Why does the Sun come up? These questions help children discover the causal relationships among things(孩子们生来就有顽皮的好奇心。 As Engel writes, “when children are allowed to dive into a topic thoroughly, they connect unrelated facts and generate new ideas.” The real mental work takes place as they play(然而,探索需要时间。 根据第四段中Engel的话“It becomes clear that the educational system in U.S. does not concern itself with children’s intellectual lives (显然,美国的教育体系并不关注儿童的智力生活)”可知,Engel明确指出美国的教育体系并不关心孩子们的智力生活,这表明她对美国的教育体系持批评态度。故选A。 34. 根据最后一段中“With scientific insight and vivid examples, Engel’s book offers tips for how to make the learning more apparent. 通读全文,尤其结合第一段中“The Intellectual Lives of Children allows readers to look into the minds of kids as they explore and learn in everyday moments, emphasizing what constitutes real learning.(《儿童的智力生活》让读者在孩子们每天探索和学习的时候观察他们的思想,强调什么是真正的学习。)”、第二段中“Children are born with playful curiosity. They ask questions about everything — Why does a tree have leaves? Why does the Sun come up? These questions help children discover the causal relationships among things 这些问题帮助孩子们发现事物之间的因果关系)”和第三段中“The real mental work takes place as they play — when a child builds a platform of chairs to get cookies from an out-of-reach cookie box. Hidden in these moments are strengthened curiosity and innovation.(真正的脑力劳动发生在他们玩耍的时候——当一个孩子搭建一个椅子平台,从一个够不着的饼干盒里拿饼干时。 In order to survive in the world with challenges, we need to be wise. 36 Let me tell you this, wisdom provides us with ideas when we need it and it calms us down in terrible situations. Take new classes and read new books. 38 The list goes on and on. All of these activities will help you to tackle problems from different angles, making everything easier. You obviously want to grow and do better in life, right? The best way is to have wise people as your mentors (导师), like teachers, colleagues and even special friends. Prior to making them a mentor, find out what makes them wiser, then engage in useful dialogue with them. 39 If you have accumulated a lot of knowledge, then why not share it with others too? 40 in today’s world, it is very easy to become wise but it isn’t easy to help others. So keep things balanced and never let go of your passions and values. This will pave the path to success. A.Why do we communicate with wise people? B.Why is wisdom crucial in this modern world? C.Change your routine and see where life takes you. D.Surf the Internet and clear out your problems that confuse you. E.Sometimes we ourselves need to be open to diverse ideas. F.The more time is spent with them, the more transfer of knowledge there will be. G.Communicating with others and helping them out will also increase your wisdom. 36.根据空前的“In order to survive in the world with challenges, we need to be wise.(为了在这个充满挑战的世界上生存,我们需要变得聪明)”以及后文“Let me tell you this, wisdom provides us with perspective when we need it and it calms us down in terrible situations.(让我告诉你,当我们需要的时候,智慧会给我们提供视角,在糟糕的情况下,智慧会让我们冷静下来)”可知,智慧对每个人来说都是十分重要的,所以B项“为什么智慧在现代社会如此重要?” 37.设空处位于段首,是本段的中心句,根据后文“This will open up new pathways for us. Never base your perspective on the most popular opinion or which is the most comfortable for you. Train your mind to be a judgment-free space for ideas. If you are humble, then you will always get to experience something new.(这将为我们开辟新的道路。 38.上文“You must be the kind of person who learns something new every day. Take new classes, read books and the list goes on and on.(你一定是那种每天都能学到新东西的人。 符合语境,下文中的“All of these activities”即指代前两句话,且D项中的“clear out your problems”与下文中的“tackle problems”相呼应。故选D项。 39.此处位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“You obviously want to grow and do better in life, right? The best way is to have wise people as your mentors (导师), like teachers, colleagues and even special friends. Prior to making them a mentor, find out what makes them wiser, then engage in useful dialogue with them.(你显然想要成长,想要在生活中做得更好,对吗? 40.根据前文“If you have accumulated a lot of knowledge, then why not share it with others too?(如果你积累了很多知识,那么为什么不与他人分享呢?)” 与本段主题相符,且G项中的“Communicating with others”与上文中的“share it with others”相呼应。 My mother changed my life. It was a summer day, my mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed—and there it was in the window. White, shiny, plastic and decorated with flowers, the 42 winked at me and I knew I had to 43 it. “It’s beautiful. Mom, can I please get it? I’ll do 44 chores for as long as you say. Among them was 13-year-old Zora, who, had already won two speech contests and was full of confidence that she could win again. Zora volunteered to represent her class in the competition, and after a round of voting, she was chosen as the class representative. Although there were only seven days left until the big day, Zora felt a sense of ease about the competition. After all, she had been here before and knew what it took to win. At home, Zora’s father congratulated her on her achievement, while her mother reminded her to take the competition seriously. Despite her parents’ advice, Zora was convinced that her past successes meant this would be a walk in the park. Her teacher also urged her to prepare diligently, but Zora only sought help once to revise her initial draft. As the days went by, Zora did not put in the necessary effort to refine her speech. When the day of the competition arrived, she was hit with a sudden wave of panic. She couldn’t remember the content of her speech, and as she stepped onto the stage, her anxiety only grew. After delivering the opening lines, she froze, unable to continue. The supportive applause from the audience only added to her confusion, leaving no room for her to recall her prepared words. 词汇激活 行为类 ①察觉到:sense/perceive/detect ②解释:explain/clarify ③承认:acknowledge/admit ④强调:emphasize/stress ⑤建议:propose/suggest ⑥需要:require/need 情绪类 ①沮丧:depression/frustration ②安慰的:comforting/consoling/soothing 【点睛】[高分句型1] Zora told her failure to her father, after which her father gently explained that acknowledging one’s mistakes was an important part of personal growth. C Were you to join a marathon, you might think you’d wander into a nightmare. D In a digital, global world where thinking critically and generating new ideas count, a cradle-to-career approach to educating children must be mindful of how children learn to learn, not just what they learn. A.Fun Inspires Kids’ Curiosity B.Play Develops Better Thinkers C.Learning Feeds Young Minds D.Hurried Parents Teach Kids Well In order to survive in the world with challenges, we need to be wise. 36 Let me tell you this, wisdom provides us with ideas when we need it and it calms us down in terrible situations. Here are some strategies that we can use to get wiser. 37 This will open up as many as new pathways for us. Never base your ideas on the most popular opinion or which is the most comfortable for you. Train your mind to be a judgment-free space for ideas. If you are humble, then you will always get to experience something new. You must be the kind of person who learns something new every day. The school had organized a speech competition titled “Ways to Become Successful,” and many students were eager to showcase their public speaking skills. Zora struggled through the rest of her speech, finishing it in a state of embarrassment and shame. As she walked off the stage, she saw the disappointment in her teacher’s eyes and felt the letdown from her classmates. It was a heavy burden to bear. Back at home, Zora could no longer hold back her tears. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next day, Zora went to school and apologized to her class. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ( 1 )原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究!
