Homework isn’t everyone’s favorite thing. But like it or not, it’s part of life for most students. Do students need homework? Here are four students’ opinions.
Peter: Students need homework. When we learn new things at school, we need to do some homework at home to help us remember them. Our homework can also give our teachers useful information. It tells them how much we learn in class and who needs more help. Homework is important at every stage (阶段) of learning.
Olivia: In my opinion, giving students homework is a bad idea. After school, we need time to exercise or learn other new things. If students work hard in class, it’s best not to give them homework.
Nancy: I think students need homework. But the amount (数量) should be different for students of different ages. Primary school students should get less homework. Middle and high school students can do more homework.
Mike: Students don’t need homework. After hours of sitting in class, learning subjects from math and science to history and reading, the last thing we want is homework. Doing another hour of work at home is just making us do the same thing as what we do at school all day. You might not usually pick up someone else’s rubbish (垃圾). But imagine if everyone did it, the world would be a much cleaner place!
When I was young, my parents and my teachers always told me to pick up any rubbish around me. Each day at school during our lunch break, every student had to find some rubbish. We put it in the bin before we returned to class. Our school was always very clean because everyone spent one or two minutes picking up rubbish every day.
That same idea is now becoming popular around the world, thanks to Take 3, Australian surfer (冲浪运动员) Amanda Marechal and an ocean scientist (海洋科学家) Roberta Dixon came up with the idea in 2009. They asked everyone to pick up three pieces of rubbish each time they visited the beach. Why did they ask people to pick up just three pieces of rubbish, instead of 10 or 20? They think it’s an easy thing that people might finish.
Today, Take 3 is a popular idea around the world, and not just on the beach. It has gone to the United Kingdom, the United States, Costa Rica and some other countries. Their latest plan is to make an app. It will help people learn more about what kinds of rubbish are polluting (污染) the ocean.

In southwest China’s Chongqing, a man spent eight years making a miniature steam train (微型蒸汽火车) for his son.
Hanghang, the son, was diagnosed with autism (自闭症) at the age of three. After finishing primary school, he left school because he couldn’t catch up in classes and also had difficulty talking or playing with other children of his age.
When his parents were at work, Hanghang spent most of his time at home watching TV with his grandmother. At that time, he was totally into small cartoon (卡通) trains. He even drew trains on the walls and slept with toy trains in his hand.
Hanghang’s father, Li Jiawei, is an electrician (电工). Seeing his son’s love for trains, Li came up with an idea: to build a real, big train for his son. Whenever he had free time, Li would learn how to build a train. It was difficult. Sometimes he thought about giving up, but he made it at last. In 2021, he finished building the first part of the train for his son. But Li did not stop there. To make the train more powerful (强有力的), he built another seven parts.
Now 15-year-old Hanghang has become a skilled (熟练的) “train driver”. He also got a job at a big park. He would drive his train and take visitors to enjoy the views. Visitors paid a little money for the ride. Train tickets have become Hanghang’s “income (收入)”, but it is free for the children with autism.
“I hope people can care more for children with autism and love them more. I hope my son can live a happy life, and at the same time, he can also make others happy,” Li said.

Do you feel bad when someone else has something that you want but don’t have? Why do you feel this way? Here I share a case with you.
One day, I got a letter from a girl. She said that her friend just got a dog. Her friend talked about the dog all the time. It made the girl feel bad because she didn’t have one.
Here’s what I wrote back to her in my letter:
There are people who have nicer homes than us, have better jobs, or, in your case, own a cute dog you don’t have.
It’s quite natural to want things that we don’t have, but instead, we should appreciate (珍惜) what we already have, or feel happy for people who have the thing we want.
In fact, owning a dog is a lot more hard work than it seems to be. Dogs need care, attention, exercise and love. There’s also a lot of cleaning you need to do for it. Dog hair and dirty paw prints (爪印) would be everywhere in your home.
It’s great to spend time with dogs though, so why not ask your friend if you can join her when she takes her dog out for a walk? You’d get to spend some fun time with your friend and get some exercise by walking.
And who knows—one day, you might own your own dog, too.
Yours,
By Dale Fox

A. She doesn’t know how to make friends. B. She is afraid to face this problem one day.
C. She should appreciate her friend’s dog. D. It’s quite natural that she feels that way.
23. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3 of Dale’s letter?
A. Owning a dog is easier than you think. B. Keeping a dog is not easy.

Yours,
By Dale Fox
