Seven out of 10 families don’t sit down together for dinner every night, with many unwilling to put down their phones and turn off the TV to eat, a survey shows.
Almost half of Australian families try hard to find enough to talk about over dinner, and may end up arguing instead of conversing, the survey of 1,000 grown-ups shows. The research shows 80 per cent of families sometimes sit in silence, and 92 per cent say their digital devices stop them talking to each other.
The study suggests work is impacting on family togetherness, with fewer than a quarter of parents who work full-time eating most nights with their children.
Overall, four in 10 Australian parents say their families find it hard to connect and share conversations at dinnertime, with television, mobile phones and computers, and tiredness most often getting in the way of this.
However, the research, which was officially asked for by food company Old El Paso, shows many parents want to do things differently, with 95 per cent agreeing that conversation improves a meal. Scientist Jocelyn Brewer said the findings show the way Australian life is getting busier and more stressful for families.
“It’s not surprising to hear that 97 per cent of parents like meals better where their family can laugh, connect, tell stories and share food,” she said.
The survey has also shown the most common dinnertime topic is what’s going on at school or work (74 per cent), followed by weekend plans (59 per cent). Only one in 10 parents like politics to be discussed.
All parents surveyed said they would like tools such as conversation cards to help improve their mealtimes.

We live in a culture that encourages us to be strong and independent, but is it possible that we have gone too far?
Over-independence is the belief that you are the only person you can depend on. 1 For example, you have depended on someone in the past and been let down, so, as a result, you have a “if you want something done, you have to do it yourself” mind.
2 One day, I had just come back from a funeral(葬礼) when a friend called me to see how I was. Being so used to being very over-independent at that point, I said he didn't need to worry. Hours later, he turned up at my door simply saying, “I thought you might want a hug.” He was right. 3
What I ignored was that the great pressure I put on myself to do everything alone was blocking me from forming real and close connections, because in order to ask for help, you need to trust others and let them in.
4 But living a life where you don't give anyone a chance to be there for you is extremely lonely, and not the solution. Humans are sociable creatures. With our communities getting smaller and smaller, and our dependence on others becoming greater, it can be really easy to feel alone. 5 When you feel like no one cares, text someone who you love. The more you give them a roadmap on how to help you, the more they can. So feel free to ask someone for support, and it is so worth it.
A.I felt the opposite.
B.I used to be the same.
C.He taught me to ask for what I want.
D.It is often born out of a painful experience.

根据划线词组下文“with fewer than a quarter of parents who work full-time eating most nights with their children(全职工作的父母中,只有不到四分之一的人大多数晚上和孩子一起吃饭)”可知,全职工作的父母中,只有不到四分之一的人大多数晚上和孩子一起吃饭。 故选A项。
根据文章第四段“Overall, four in 10 Australian parents say their families find it hard to connect and share conversations at dinnertime(总的来说,十分之四的澳大利亚父母表示,他们的家庭在晚餐时间很难交流和分享对话)”可知,近半数的家庭发现晚餐时难以交流。故选C项。
根据文章倒数第二段“The survey has also shown the most common dinnertime topic is what’s going on at school or work (74 per cent), followed by weekend plans (59 per cent).(调查还显示,晚餐时最常见的话题是学校或工作上发生了什么(74%),其次是周末计划(59%))”可知,晚餐时谈论最多的是学校生活。故选B项。
根据第一段“Seven out of 10 families don’t sit down together for dinner every night, with many unwilling to put down their phones and turn off the TV to eat, a survey shows.(调查显示,有7成家庭没有每天围坐在一起吃饭的习惯,许多人不愿意放下手机关掉电视来进餐)”、第四段“Overall, four in 10 Australian parents say their families find it hard to connect and share conversations at dinnertime(总的来说,十分之四的澳大利亚父母表示,他们的家庭在晚餐时间很难交流和分享对话)”以及最后一段“All parents surveyed said they would like tools such as conversation cards to help improve their mealtimes(所有受访的家长都表示,他们希望有诸如对话卡片之类的工具来帮助他们改善进餐时的交流)”可知,文章主要讲述了多数家庭晚餐时交流减少,面临交流话题消失的风险。由此可知,D选项“Family dinner talks at risk of dying out(家庭晚餐谈话有消失的风险)”适合作本文最佳标题。故选D项。

根据划线词后文“as he didn’t have his car”可知,由于Neira没有车,所以推测Salazar经常开车送Neira往返上学。 故选A。
根据第五段“Salazar said her favorite memories of going to college with her grandfather were the occasions when he would sometimes attend meeting s for the school club where she was president.(萨拉查说,她和祖父一起上大学的最美好的记忆是,祖父有时会参加她担任主席的学校俱乐部的会议)”可知,萨拉查和祖父一起上大学的最美好的记忆是参加学校俱乐部的会议。故选D。

4.根据上文“What I ignored was that the great pressure I put on myself to do everything alone was blocking me from forming real and close connections, because in order to ask for help, you need to trust others and let them in.”(我忽略的是,我给自己施加了巨大的压力,让自己一个人做每件事,这阻碍了我建立真正的、亲密的联系,因为为了寻求帮助,你需要信任别人,让他们进入你的生活。)
5.根据上文“With our communities getting smaller and smaller, and our dependence on others becoming greater, it can be really easy to feel alone.”(随着我们的社区越来越小,我们对他人的依赖越来越大,我们很容易感到孤独。)根据下文“When you feel like no one cares, text someone who you love.”(当你觉得没人在乎的时候,给你爱的人发短信。) reaching out呼应text someone who you love。
