Yellowstone National Park, located in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, was established as the first national park in the United States. The park is a popular destination for visitors who enjoy ecological tourism as it offers forests, mountains, and many ecosystems to explore. Some of Yellowstone’s most well-known landmarks are its geothermal hot springs and geysers, the most famous of which is named Old Faithful.
Last fall, Lisa and her friends decided to take a camping trip to Yellowstone National Park. For their camping trip, they brought their backpacks, sleeping bags, some food and drinks. They set up their tents immediately upon arriving at their campsite.
During their trip, Lisa and her friends hiked the many trails of the park, exploring its natural surroundings. In the forest, they saw a lot of local wildlife. Lisa was blown away by a family of grizzly bears, some gray wolves, and even bald eagles flying overhead. Unexpectedly, she seemed to quite enjoy being in such a great place. They were well protected.
Since Yellowstone contains many hot springs and the world’s largest area of active geysers, Lisa and her friends visited many different geyser sites. Of all of the sites, Lisa and her friends agreed that Old Faithful was the most fascinating. Lisa and her friends waited patiently for the geyser to erupt. After about 40 minutes, a stream of boiling water over 100 feet tall sprayed from the ground and up into the air. Luckily, no one got wet!

Boxing has been practiced for centuries — it was even one of the sports in the original Olympic Games in ancient Greece. More recently, boxing has become the mainstream in the UK, with hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life participating in the sport every week. But why? The answer lies in the physical, mental and even social benefits boxing can bring.
Its physical benefits are clear. Whether it’s practicing with a punching bag (沙袋) or a partner or facing an opponent in the ring, boxing can be an intense form of exercise and give a full-body workout. It can improve muscular strength, and it can also increase fitness — allowing someone to work out harder, for longer. These can, in turn, have a positive impact on other aspects of physical well-being, like heart health and weight management.
But the high physical demands of the sport aren’t just good for the body — boxing can also have a positive impact on someone’s mental well-being. Dr Jessica Pinchbeck, Senior Lecturer in Sport and Fitness at the Open University, says that boxing can mitigate some of the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Exercising regularly is already widely known to be good for mental health, but boxing can also bring a sense of discipline and focus.
And there is a third benefit of putting on the boxing gloves. Practicing punches can be done alone, of course, but boxing is not just an individual activity — it also involves working with others to train and stay safe. Dr Gavin Williams, Senior Lecturer in Education at the Open University, says that this cooperation and team work can create a sense of identity and belonging. So, no matter what the reason that attracts someone to boxing, the interactive elements of the sport mean it can also have profound social benefits.
Good for body mind and social interactions? It’s not surprising that more and more people are stepping into the ring.
28. How does the author develop the passage?
A. By giving examples. B. By making suggestions.
C. By listing reasons. D. By answering questions.
29. What does the underlined word “mitigate ”in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Change. B. Determine. C. Control. D. Reduce.
30. What would be the best choice according to Dr Gavin Williams?
A. Practicing boxing in the ring. B. Practicing boxing with a partner.
C. Practicing boxing on your own. D. Practicing boxing with a punching bag.
31. What would be the best title for the text?
A. The benefits of boxing B. Boxing leads to great teamwork
C. The ways to practice boxing D. Boxing does good to your health
D
At this time of year, thousands of British tourists are heading to the Austrian ski slopes (斜坡), attracted not just by the snow tracks (跑道) but also by the pretty villages, great food and drink, and, the Austrian lifesaver for parents, the kid-friendly hotel. Confusing, then, a recent survey by InterNations on Expat-Friendly Places has put Austria the worst country in the world (well, out of 53 countries) for “local friendliness”.
As a frequent visitor to Austria, I must admit being confused. I’ve had many experiences there, but none that I would call the least bit unfriendly. Take my most recent trip there last weekend for example. Vienna in winter is beautiful and, if you’re lucky, you may have some snow — despite which, the transport systems such as buses and subways continue to work well. Food markets here open early and I began at the most famous, the Naschmarkt, with its two main streets, one for restaurants, the other for food stalls (摊位). But instead of the expected rude traders, I was surrounded by encouraging smiles! So far, so friendly.
So, if Austrians are funny, how can they also be unfriendly? This is the place, after all, where they invented a best-selling chocolate known as Mozart balls (after their most outstanding composer), ballet for horses (at Vienna’s Spanish Riding School), and the favourite night-time snack of sausages.
Did I say formal? That is, perhaps, at the root of the misunderstanding. Austrians like going to balls and wearing their traditional clothes. They are super polite and helpful to lost tourists. That’s not to say you can’t anger an Austrian. For example, being late is not to be allowed.
My point is that you get the best of the two countries closest to them: Everything works (as in Germany) and they like to have fun (as in Italy). And I’m not alone in my opinion. According to the Global Liveability Index, Vienna is the best city to live in on the planet and it has worn that particular crown for the past 10 years. Perhaps, in this situation, the statistics (统计学) have rather missed the point.
32. Why are British tourists mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To show they are the friendliest tourists.
B. To interest us with a confusing situation.
C. To introduce the topic of tourism.
D. To compare them with Austrians.
33. What happened to the author at the Naschmarkt?
A. He came across polite traders.
B. He lost his way at the food markets.
C. He was inspired to smile even in winter.
D. He was confused by the transportation systems.
34. What do we know about Austrians?
A. They are serious. B. They are unfriendly.
C. They like to be on time. D. They like formal uniforms.
35. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To call on Austrians to be more friendly.
B. To attract tourists to pay a visit to Austria.
C. To explain his idea of international relations.
D. To show Austria doesn’t deserve its bad name.

Good for body, mind and social interactions? It’s not surprising that more and more people are stepping into the ring.
28. How does the author develop the passage?
A. By giving examples. B. By making suggestions.
C. By listing reasons. D. By answering questions.
29. What does the underlined word “mitigate ”in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Change. B. Determine. C. Control. D. Reduce.
30. What would be the best choice according to Dr Gavin Williams?
A. Practicing boxing in the ring. B. Practicing boxing with a partner.
C. Practicing boxing on your own. D. Practicing boxing with a punching bag.
31. What would be the best title for the text?
A. The benefits of boxing B. Boxing leads to great teamwork
C. The ways to practice boxing D. Boxing does good to your health

(它对身体的好处是显而易见的)”;以及第三段中“But the high physical demands of the sport aren’t just good for the body — boxing can also have a positive impact on someone’s mental well-being.

【答案】32. B 33. A 34. C 35. D
