The elderly people in care homes in London are given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely.
The project was started by a local charity. ________ Workers in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.
Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said, “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school. I like the project a lot. I’m waiting there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and waiting there again at night to see they’ve gone to bed. It’s good to have a different interest. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and they come and sit outside to watch them. I’m enjoying the creative activities, and I feel great to have a sense of achievement (成就感).”
There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given money to start it all over the country. Wendy Wilson, a care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said, “Elderly people really welcome the idea of the project and the creative way. In Chinese cities, people in yellow or blue suits riding e-bikes are easy to see. They rush between traffic from restaurants to homes and businesses. They are food deliverymen. Though they make our life more convenient, this can come at a cost for them.
“The food deliverymen are trapped in the app,” says an article in the Chinese magazine Portrait, which has caused a discussion. It points out that on food delivery service platforms Erleme and Meituan, the time limit (限制) and route for each delivery order is worked out by an algorithm (算法), which doesn’t consider real-life situations such as red lights, speed limits and waiting for the lift.
Based on the algorithm, the time limit for a delivery order within 2 kilometers is 30 minutes. Within that time, a deliveryman has to pick up the order and deliver it to the customer. Besides, the deliverymen have shorter limit time in recent years. Delay (延迟) could mean a deduction in pay so deliverymen speed up, often breaking traffic rules and putting people’s lives at risk.
Many people asked the platforms to improve the rules applied to the deliverymen. On Sept 9, Erleme announced it would add a button to the app, which allowed customers to extend the time limit for their order, and encouraged customers to show more respect for deliverymen.
But this created more heated debates (激烈的讨论). They felt the company was putting the responsibility (责任) on the users rather than solving the problem themselves. Also, even with the ability to allow more time for delivery, it may not fully solve the problem. “If I give them five more minutes, they would not use it to ride slowly or obey the traffic rules. They would simply take one more order. This is not the final cure to solve the problem.”
Actually it would be better to improve the platform’s system and the delivery system. Besides, the government should prevent companies from setting short time limit for their deliverymen and keep them safe on the roads.
36. In which column of a newspaper can we find the article?
A. Nature. B. Life. C. Culture. D. Travel.
37. According to the passage, what can we know about the food deliverymen?
A. They had even shorter delivery time limit in the past.
B. They seldom wear uniforms when they are working.
C. They have difficulty in delivering the food within the time limit.
D. The algorithm offers them practical choices of time and routes.
38. What does the underlined word “extend” in Paragraph 4 mean in Chinese?
A. 缩短 B. 延长 C. 取消 D. 挑选
39. What do people think of “adding a button to the app”?
A. Customers shouldn’t take responsibility for the problem.
B. More problems are certain to be brought about.
C. The method might be the best solution to the problem.
D. The company is sparing no effort to solve the problem.
40. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Planning the Delivery Time B. Deliverymen Break the Rules
C. No Deadlines for Deliverymen D. Lightening Deliverymen’s Load
By the year 2050, it is estimated that the world’s population will reach nine billion. An interesting question: what happens when people in poorer countries raise their living standard and demand more meat in their diet? Imagine trying to feed nine billion people with enough meat. In short, it’s simply impossible.
Australian journalist and science writer, Julian Cribb, explains the challenges the world faces in feeding nine billion people by the year 2050. Cribb says there is a big problem in the food system in the developed world, at least. As more and more people move toward city centers, the less and less they know about where their food comes from. Most think food simply grows on supermarket shelves, and they don’t consider the environmental effects of food production.
Food has many hidden cost: huge volumes of water energy use and land degradation (退化). Consumers add their own costs by simply throwing away a lot of food. The figures waste in West is staggering.
To solve this problem of public ignorance (无知) about food, Cribb suggests that food should be taught as a subject at primary school. This would help to create a future generation that could better deal with the world’s coming food challenges. This measure can help to raise a generation of educated consumers, more productive farmers, and so on.
Cribb offers other solutions and suggestions as well. One is to increase the funding for agriculture (农业) science. He suggested organic (有机的) farming should be understood on a scientific basis, changing people’s thinking to one of a new form of “environmental agriculture” to get the very best out of organic farming systems. He says we should stop wasting food and learn how to grow food more cheaply. We should use less water as water is one of the main inputs into food production. Cribb also suggests eating more fruit and vegetables.
41. In the second paragraph, one problem of the food system in developed countries is _______.
A. increasing ignorance about the means of food production B. an increasing number of people moving to city centers
C. overpopulation with nine billion people to feed D. food production doing harm to the environment
42. What does the underlined word “staggering” in Paragraph 3 mean in Chinese?
A. 令人困惑的 B. 令人吃惊的 C. 令人恐惧的 D. 令人满意的
43. Which of the following is NOT a reason for making food a subject at school?
A. To help students understand more about city environment. B. To train more productive farmers.
C. To better prepare students for food challenges. D. To educate students more about food production.
44 What is the structure of the passage? (①= Paragraph 1)
A. B. C. D.
45. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. The effect of agriculture on the environment. B. The effect of the world’s population on agriculture.
C. Food problems in the future and some solutions. D. The development of agriculture in the future.

Food has many hidden cost: huge volumes of water, energy use and land degradation (退化).
