Good afternoon. The lesson I am going to represent is taken from Book 1 Unit3 Sports and Fitness and it’s a reading and thinking lesson entitled Living Legends.
I’ll interpret my lesson mainly in the following 3 aspects. They are the learning objectives, the evaluation tasks and the teaching activities.
And all these three parts are based on the Curriculum Standards, the analysis of teaching material and the students themselves.
So at the very beginning, I’ll illustrate the teaching principles, teaching and learning methods, analysis of the teaching text and the students. According to the Curriculum Standards, our classroom teaching should be aimed to help students cultivate their English subject core competencies, which include language ability, thinking quality, cultural awareness, and learning ability. How can we achieve the goal, we need to integrate the components of the curriculum into our class by adopting proper methods through a series of theme-based activities where they go through the learning processes of learning and understanding, applying and practicing, and transferring and creating. Only when we teachers create appropriate learning activities can we achieve an effective class.
So my teaching method of this class is activity-based approach to English learning, and learning methods are learning through activities, cooperative learning and inquiry-based learning.
As for the analysis of the text, I try to answer three questions: what, why and how. The theme of the text is man and society. And it’s about to choose the living legends of sports in your eyes. The author intends to recommend Lang Ping and Jordan as living legends and as examples for us to follow. And the author conveys the moral value that it’s not only great achievements but also great qualities that make a person a legend, and we should learn from them. As for how, it’s an introductory text, and made up of 2 paragraphs, one introducing Lang Ping and the other Jordan. The text unfolds with the pattern of exemplification and also it has Internal logic structures. As for the language features, it’s both concise and beautiful, using some rhetorical devices. And the main key words and expressions are related to describing a person’s achievements and qualities.
As for the analysis of students, they have learned and previewed something, so they have certain relevant background experience about this topic. They are highly motivated because most of the students are very interested in this topic. But they don’t have a deep and clear understanding about what a legend is. And it’s the first time for them to notice the rhetorical devices.
So based on all of the analysis above, I design the learning objectives of the lesson and which are also the teaching objectives of the lesson. That is by the end of the lesson, the students will be able to 1. acquire and summarize the information about Lang Ping and Michael Jordan as living legends; 2. analyze the passage about Jordan by distinguishing between the statement and the supporting details. Identifying the linking sentence and appreciating the rhetorical devices such as parallelism, hyperbole and quotation; 3. conclude what makes a person legend; 4. recommend another living legend person orally, using the language, the organization and the rhetorical devices we have learned.
The key points and the difficult points:
And now comes the second part of my statement: the "evaluation task". Well,to detect the achievement of students' learning goals, whether they have learned, to what extent, and what they have not done enough, it’s a basis for teachers' next teaching decisions. Students can also self-evaluate through it.
Effective evaluation tasks need to meet three criteria: match objectives, be clear, and be feasible to implement. So for this lesson, the evaluation task is to choose your favorite athlete and use the words and expression, the structures you learned to describe him or her to others. During the process of achieving this task, the teacher should observe the students’ performance and give instant and proper feedback. Also the group members can evaluate each other and the student can self-evaluate according to the given requirements.
And next is the third part, the teaching activities. Guided by the objectives I design 6 steps and 4 activities.
Firstly, I invite my students to brainstorm……
Then, I create a situation by telling them today we are going to……,but first please……to lead in the title:
There are three purposes of this step: Thematically it activates students’ prior knowledge about the topic and lead them into the topic. Psychologically, it creates an open learning environment and arouse their interest. Mentally it provides students’ thoughts on what a legend person is.
Then comes activity one, students start to read the title and the given pictures and
activity 1 pre-reading activity (structure topic sentences)
intention: to get the information quickly by the distinct information, like the title, the pictures, the first sentence of each paragraph, etc.
activity 2 While-reading (main idea, specific information)
intention: to analyze and summarize information and also promote their thinking capability of finding the logic connections between various information.
activity 3 While-reading (language features) By figuring out the questions given, the students go into the deep reading of the passage by finding out their favorite sentences or expressions and give their reasons. And they work in pairs, so they can help each other.
Intention: In this part, I want my students to perceive, understand and appreciate the beauty and the power of language which is also the cultivation of their cultural awareness.
Activity 4: post-reading(summarize the writing skills which can make a passage better and the students are asked to choose their favorite athlete and use the words and expressions, the structures they learned to describe him or her to others)
Intention: the students can develop their learning ability by using what we have learned into practice and to raise their critical thinking.
Then comes the evaluation part. During the whole class, the teachers, group members, and the student themselves do the evaluation according to their performance, their final works and the evaluation chart.
The must-do homework is to and the can-do is to
As for the blackboard design, except for the title and sub-title, The middle part I’ll draw a mind map including the basic structures of this kind of passage and the main achievements and qualities a living legend should have. The left part is left for some important or new words and expressions occurred in this lesson, and the right side is for the learning objectives.
That’s all for my lesson. Thanks for your listening.
