Personal Forgiveness
Taking responsibility for mistakes is a positive step, but don’t beat yourself up about them. To err (犯错) is human. 1 You can use the following writing exercise to help you do this.
In a journal or on a piece of paper, put the heading “Personal strengths.” 2 Are you caring? Creative? Generous? A good listener? Fun to be around? They don’t have to be world-changing, just aspects of your personality that you’re proud of.
At the top of a second page, put the heading “Acts of kindness.” On this one, list all the positive things you’ve done for others. It might be the time when you helped a friend with their homework, when you did the ironing without being asked, or when you baked cookies after the family had had a tiring day. 3
You could ask a friend or family member to help add to your list. 4 That way, you could exchange thoughts on what makes each of you special and the aspects of your personality that shine through. In fact, don’t wait until you’ve made a mistake to try this—it’s a great way to boost self-confidence at any time.
It’s something of a cliché (陈词滥调) that most people learn not from their successes but their mistakes. The thing is, it’s true. 5 We’ re all changing and learning all the time and mistakes are a positive way to develop and grow.
A. A little self-forgiveness also goes a long way.
B. Now list all the characteristics you like about yourself.
C. They might even like to have a go at doing the exercise.
D. It’s just as important to show yourself some forgiveness.
E. It doesn’t mean you have to ignore what’s happened or forget it.
F. Whatever it is, no matter how small it might seem, write it down.
G. Whatever the mistake, remember it isn’t a fixed aspect of your personality.

As an artist who shares her journey on social media, I’m often asked by curious followers how to begin an art journey. Unfortunately, there is no magic list I can offer. I do remember, though, what it was like to be a complete beginner. So I’ve put together some good tips for starting an art journey.
▪Start small. I suggest using a sketchbook (素描本) for small studies. These small studies provide inspiration and may be a springboard for more complex works in the future. 6 You’ll want to look back on your journey to see how far you’ve come.
▪Paint often and paint from life. There’s no better way to improve than to put in those brush miles. Whether you paint still lifes, portraits, or landscapes, paint from life as much as possible. 7
▪Continually challenge yourself to try something new. 8 Artistic growth can be a bit painful. Welcome to the club;we’ve all been there. I love taking on challenges. I once took up a challenge to create a painting every day for a month and post the works online.
▪ 9 Seeking and accepting constructive feedback (反馈) is crucial to growth. I post my work on social media and, in turn, have met some of the kindest people. They make me feel valued and respected, no matter my level of artistic ability.
The journey you’re on won’t follow a straight path. 10 Push through, give it time and put in the effort. You will harvest the rewards of an artistic life.
A. Get out of your comfort zone.
B. Make career plans and set goals.
C. Don’t throw away your beginner art.
D. Share your work if you feel comfortable doing so.
E. You’ll hit roadblocks, and you’ll feel discouraged at times.
F. Evaluate your performance and, if needed, redefine your role.
G. You’ll develop that painting muscle memory that only comes with repetition.

It means the fitness level is not in accordance with our age and the climatic conditions we live in.
It is important for everyone to devote some time to health and fitness. 19 For instance, we must exercise daily regardless of our age and working style. There are different levels of exercises for different age groups and we must do them according to our own health and age.

My husband and I just spent a week in Paris.____21____So the first thing we did was rent a fantastically expensive sixth-floor apartment the size of a cupboard. It was so tiny that we had to leave our suitcases in the hallway.
The place wasn’t entirely authentic, though. Unlike a normal Parisian apartment, the plumbing (水 管) worked. ____22____Our building even had a tiny lift with a female voice that said, “Ouverture des portes,” in perfect French. That is the only French phrase I mastered, and it’s a shame I don’t have much use for it.
Parisians are different from you and me. They never look lazy or untidy. As someone noted in this paper a couple of weeks ago, they eat great food and never gain weight. ____23____ French strawberries do not taste like cardboard. Instead, they explode in your mouth like little flavor bombs.
____24____ On our first morning in Paris, I went around the corner to the food market to pick up some groceries. I bought a handful of perfectly ripe small strawberries and a little sweet melon. My husband and I agreed they were the best fruit we had ever eaten. But they cost $18!
In France, quality of life is much more important than efficiency.
You can tell this by cafés life. French cafés are always crowded.____25____When do these people work? The French take their 35-hour workweek seriously — so seriously that some labor unions recently struck a deal with a group of companies limiting the number of hours that independent contractors can be on call.
A. Not all the customers are tourists.
B. The quality of life in France is equally excellent.
C. There was a nice kitchen and a comfortable bed.
D. The amazing food is mainly consumed by local farmers.
E. That’s not the only reason the French eat less than we do.
F. Our aim was to see if we could live, in some way, like real Parisians.
G. The food is so delicious that you don’t need much of it to make you happy.

STEM vs.STEAM
STEM is short for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The term was coined by Judith Ramaley while a director at National Science Foundation in 2001. Since then, STEM-focused education has been extended to many countries beyond the United States. However, education is a constantly evolving game. 1 One of the latest philosophies gaining steam is adding an arts component to the STEM educational focus, thus, creating the STEM vs.STEAM debate.
The believers in STEM education want the focus to remain on the core STEM principles. 2 Tasks involving product design encourage students to draw and create. Adding arts will take away from the original intention of focusing on the STEM disciplines.
3 They argue that adding arts to STEM is a way to develop strong STEM students who think creatively. Several studies have shown that engaging students’ arts strength increases their motivation when it comes to STEM activities. 4 Furthermore, for kids who might be turned off from STEM subjects due to a dislike of numbers, highlighting the artistic component of lessons can reach out and draw them in.
While they seem to be opposed, both sides of this argument may have the right idea. 5 Consider the growing field of computer animation, where you must have both artistic abilities and strong technology fields. Also, the most basic of all children’s toys, wooden blocks, are an incredible example of STEAM exploration. They bring design, geometry, and engineering concepts to our youngest learners, setting them up for a lifetime of creative thinking.
A. The STEAMers disagree.
B. Actually, science and arts are inseparable.
C. It consistently introduces new theories and practices.
D. Their idea is that there are already enough arts in their approach.
E. Thus, good teachers are always learning to keep pace with updated knowledge.
F. It also improves the probability of success in complicated tasks and challenges.
G. They believe adding art makes the STEM courses accessible to more students.

Fitness tracking devices often recommend we take 10,000 steps a day. But the goal of taking 10,000 steps is not, as many of us believe, rooted in science. 1
The 10,000-steps target became popular in Japan in the 1960s. A clock maker, hoping to benefit from interest in fitness after the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, mass-produced a pedometer(计步器) with a name that, when written in Japanese characters, resembled a walking man. 2 Therefore, it created a walking aim that, through the decades, somehow got planted in our global consciousness—and fitness trackers.
But today’s best science suggests we do not need to take 10,000 steps a day. 3 In that study, people who walked for about 8,000 steps a day were half as likely to die prematurely(过早地) from heart disease or any other cause as those who had 4,000 steps a day. 4 The extra steps did not provide much additional protection against dying young, either.
5 If, like many people, we currently take about 5,000 steps a day during the course of everyday activities like shopping and housework, adding the extra 2,000 to 3,000 steps would take us to a total of between 7,000 and 8,000 steps most days, which seems to be the step-count sweet spot.
A. It also translated as “10,000-steps meter”.
B. Really, many of us reach that 10,000-step goal.
C. In fact it is based on history rather than research.
D. But the statistical benefits of additional steps were slight.
E. The 8,000-steps a day could be a reasonable and achievable goal.
F. A study found that 10,000 steps a day are not a must for a long life.
G. The risks for early death continued to drop among those taking more steps.

Some people prefer to have a bite to eat before hitting the gym, known as a fed workout. Others would like to wait until after exercising to refuel their bodies, called a fasted workout. 1 Many experts say there’s no easy answer because it depends on the person.
If you want energy and strength for an ideal workout, you need fuel. A fed workout will provide your body with power. Eating before exercise may help you sustain longer sessions and lift heavier weights. 2 Muscle preservation is also an essential component of strengthening your body. Nitrogen(氮) is critical for processing protein that builds healthy muscles. People tend to lose less nitrogen during a fed workout than a fasted one.
Many fitness enthusiasts are not on board with this idea. They report feeling sick and inactive while trying to exercise after eating. With a fasted workout, you may not get the usual indigestion. Experts for fasted workouts further claim that eating afterwards makes your body use its fat reserves for energy, meaning you will burn more fat. 3 It can cause a sudden drop in your blood glucose(葡萄糖) levels, and you may feel dizzy. You may even be more likely to overeat.
4 Not all foods are created equally. For example, if you choose a fed workout, you’ll probably lose a lot of water during an intense training, so you should consider drinking some beforehand. With a fasted workout, it would help if you had some nutrition right after your session is complete. Drink some water. Then, have a light meal or nutritional snack.
Deciding when to eat for an ideal workout is a personal choice. Both fasted workouts and fed activities have their benefits and shortcomings. 5
A. However, a fasted workout might not work for you.
B. How your body will respond is based on your workout intensity.
C. These benefits can result in burning more fat and shaping a slimmer body.
D. To eat or not to eat, that is the question on many fitness enthusiasts’ minds.
E. Think thoroughly and discuss with your fitness instructor before taking a choice.
F. Knowing what to eat for an ideal workout is just as important as knowing when to eat.
G. A person doing a 30-minute session a day may not have a problem with fasted workouts.

With the digital revolution, people’s lives are being transformed. The mobile phone is a symbol of this development. Nearly everyone uses mobile phones, as they allow us to complete modern tasks conveniently and effectively.__1__
Mobile phones are a threat to our health.__2__ This will cause overweight and some other problems. Mobile phones have a particularly great impact on children’s health, even affecting the normal development of their brain and body.
It’s also true that too much use of mobile phones can make us cold and distant. How many times have you noticed that people sit with each other, but don’t interact? Our dependence on phones reduces our opportunities for face-to-face communication.__3__
Mobile phones also take up much of our time that could be better used in other things. They may include learning, playing sports, going sightseeing and so on.__4__ On the contrary, the only result after a long time spent on mobile phones, like playing video games or watching video clips is that we may not only feel tired, but empty in mind.
__5__ It is certainly convenient, but it also encourages us to be lazy about our physical health and our relationships with the people closest to us.Wouldn’t it be a good idea, once in a while, to turn off the phone and step out into the country, to enjoy the scenery and in the meantime get some exercise with the people we love?
A. It will cause our interpersonal communicating skills to suffer.
B. However, we should not overlook their bad influences.
C. All in all, the mobile phone has positives and drawbacks.
D. Anyway, the convenience of mobile phones can’t be ignored.
E. Mobiles are also used by students or learners to cheat in the exams.
F. The activities are mentally and physically beneficial to us.
G. Using them for too long tends to make us passive and ignore physical exercise.

Praise is like sunlight to the human spirit: We cannot flower and grow without it. And yet, while most of us are only too ready to apply the cold wind of criticism to others, we are somehow reluctant to give our fellows the warm sunshine of praise.
__1__ Perhaps it’s because few of us know how to accept compliments gracefully. Instead, we are embarrassed and shrug off the words we are really so glad to hear. Because of this defensive reaction, direct compliments are surprisingly difficult to give. That is why some of the most valued pats on the back are those which come to us indirectly.
It’s especially rewarding to give praise in areas in which effort generally goes unnoticed or unmentioned.__2__ A cook is praised for a perfect meal. But do you ever tell your laundry manager how pleased you are when the shirts are done just right? Do you ever praise your paperboy for getting the paper to you on time 365 days a year?
Praise is particularly appreciated by those doing routine jobs: gas station attendants, waitresses—even housewives.__3__ Since so often praise is the only wage a housewife receives, surely she should get her measure.
__4__ It only takes a moment’s thought and a moment’s effort—perhaps a quick phone call to pass on a compliment, or five minutes to write an appreciative letter. It is such a small investment and yet consider the results it may produce.__5__
So, let’s be alert to the small excellence around us and comment on them. We will not only bring joy into other people’s lives, but also, very often, add happiness into our own.
A. We are accustomed to accepting praise.
B. A student is ignored despite his good work.
C. To give praise costs the giver almost nothing.
D. It’s strange how cautious we are about praising.
E. Shakespeare said, “Our praise is our wage.”
F. An artist gets compliments for a glorious picture.
G. “I can live for two months on a good compliment,” said Mark Twain.

How can we have a less complex and more meaningful life? The answer might be minimalism(极简主义). 36 The following ways will assist you in your journey to live a simpler yet fuller life.
37 Most people’s living space is filled with things that are never used and don’t contribute to their well-being. Separate the ones you do need from the ones you don’t, and throw the latter right into the dustbin or give them away.
Appreciate all the amazing things you already have. We usually compare ourselves to others who seem happier, more beautiful and more important than us. We try our best to imitate those we envy. 38 We need to stop comparing and accept ourselves for who we are, with all our imperfections. Take a moment to appreciate what you have.
Do one thing at a time. Minimalist living actually means making the most out of each moment. We’re usually carrying out different tasks at the same time. So whatever we are doing our mind is partly wondering somewhere else. 39
Develop mindfulness. 40 Thus you need to develop mindfulness. Mindfulness means fully attending to what’s happening in the present.
A.It is about enjoying life more with less.
B.Stop consuming products you don’t need.
C.Yet no matter how much we try, we always fail.
D.Get rid of things that don’t serve your happiness.

People refer to never forgetting how to ride a bike or throw a baseball as examples of “muscle memory”, the result of a motor learning. 41 It is a phenomenon that previously trained muscles acquire strength after a period of disuse.
Previous research has shown that the changes actually persist in the muscles themselves. In one study of mice, the results suggest that after nuclei in muscle cells multiply in response to an overload of training, those extra nuclei aren’t lost during subsequent periods of inactivity. Once you have got additional nuclei, you are banking the capacity. 42
In fact, a recent study revealed that less than eight weeks of retraining were needed to reach the post-training level. But how quickly you regain your former fitness depends on how fit you were initially, how long the layoff was. how old you are and how long you’d been exercising.
43 It means you still have a distinct advantage when it comes to regaining your former level of fitness. And the principle applies to both resistance training and endurance training. The best way to regain your muscle memory is to start at a level below what you were accustomed to doing, and then gradually increase in terms of duration, frequency, then intensity. 44
Ultimately, muscle memory is a payoff for all the past work you put into learning a sport. 45 You will never know how much muscle memory you may have until you start training again.
A.The best way to tap into it is to “get back on the horse”.
B.Physiologists, on the other hand, define it in a different way.
C.This convinces the researchers that muscle memory may not be long lasting.
D.That is to say, we can do the sports automatically without conscious thought.
E.It is generally safe to increase these elements by 5 percent every week or two.
F.It is evident that the more you exercise, the more muscle memory savings you will have.
G.All this news about muscle memory is encouraging for those who fell off the fitness scheme.

The Science of Recreational Fear
From peek-a-boo to Halloween haunted houses, research shows that recreational fear can teach us to face scary situations. The “paradox of horror” is that being scared, under the right circumstances, can be fun. 46
Having fun with fear is an “extremely important tool for learning,” said Mathias Clasen, director of the Recreational Fear Lab at Aarhus University in Denmark. “We learn something about the dangers of the world. We learn something about our own responses: What does it feel like to be afraid? How much fear can I take?”
Horror movies have gotten more popular. And in one survey of more than 1,000 Americans, conducted by Clasen, 55% described themselves as horror fans. 47 Many people who would not consider themselves fans of fear enjoy true-crime podcasts and novels featuring violence and murder. Others may enjoy nature documentaries about top predators (捕食性动物) such as sharks and bears.
Even babies like being a little spooked (惊的). Peek-a-boo is “an infant jump scare,” Clasen said. 48 “I don’t think I’ve yet come across a person who did not enjoy some kind of recreational fear,” he said.
49 It is a combination of an adrenaline (肾上腺素) rush and an opportunity to learn about dealing with scary situations in a safe environment, researchers say. When we are afraid, our endocrine system releases adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol to help prepare our body for physical action. We know the “Halloween” movie Michael Myers is not real, but our brain still responds as if he were a burning threat. One brain imaging study found that watching horror movies activates threat-response brain regions such as the amygdala (扁桃腺), prefrontal cortex and insula as if the danger were real.
After this rush, many people experience an uplifted mood. One study examined how 262 adults felt before and after they entered an extreme haunted house. 50 Brain recordings before and after showed that those whose mood improved had a smaller neural response to subsequent stressors, which is associated with the post-haunt high.
A.So why do we like it?
B.Fifty percent of people said they felt better after the visit.
C.And recreational fear, as it is rightly named, could benefit us, too.
D.Playing with fear helps us learn what our body does under pressure.
E.Horror, though, is not the only genre of what people find scary fun, he said.
F.We define recreational fear broadly as a mixed emotional experience of fear and enjoyment.
G.Classic childhood games of tag and hide-and-seek are just like the real scenes of predator vs. prey.

结合空后“You can use the following writing exercise to help you do this.(你可以使用下面的写作练习来帮助你做到这一点。)” D“It’s just as important to show yourself some forgiveness.(宽恕自己也同样重要。)”
2.根据空前内容“In a journal or on a piece of paper, put the heading “Personal strengths. ”(在日记或纸上写上“个人优点”。)”以及空后内容“Are you caring? Creative? Generous? A good listener? Fun to be around? They don’t have to be world-changing, just aspects of your personality that you’re proud of.(你有爱心吗?有创造力吗?你慷慨吗?是一个好的倾听者?与人相处很有趣吗?它们不一定要改变世界,只要你个性中让你感到自豪的方面就行。)”可知,空处指的是列出一些你个性中的优点。选项B“Now list all the characteristics you like about yourself.(现在列出所有你喜欢的自己身上的特点。)”

It might be the time when you helped a friend with their homework, when you did the ironing without being asked, or when you baked cookies after the family had had a tiring day.(在第二页的顶部,写上“善举”的标题。 F“Whatever it is, no matter how small it might seem, write it down.(不管是什么,不管它看起来有多小,都要把它写下来。)”
4.根据空后内容“That way, you could exchange thoughts on what makes each of you special and the aspects of your personality that shine through.(这样,你们就可以交换意见,谈谈是什么让你们每个人都与众不同,以及你们个性中闪光的方面。)” C“They might even like to have a go at doing the exercise.(他们甚至可能想试一试做练习。)”符合语境,C项中的“they”与空前的“You could ask a friend or family member to help add to your list.(你可以让朋友或家人帮你增加你的列表内容。)”中的“a friend or family member”保持一致,同时选项C和下文“In fact, don’t wait until you’ve made a mistake to try this—it’s a great way to boost self-confidence at any time.(事实上,不要等到你犯了错误才去尝试这个——这是一个在任何时候都能增强自信的好方法。)”
5.根据空前内容“It’s something of a cliché (陈词滥调) that most people learn not from their successes but their mistakes. 【导语】本文是说明文。文章介绍了了一些开始艺术之旅的好建议。
【解析】
6.根据前文“Start small. I suggest using a sketchbook (素描本) for small studies. These small studies provide inspiration and may be a springboard for more complex works in the future. (从小开始。我建议使用一个素描本进行小规模的学习和实践。这些小的学习和实践可以提供灵感,并成为未来更复杂的作品的跳板)”以及后文“You’ll want to look back on your journey to see how far you’ve come. (你会想要回顾一下自己的艺术之旅,看看自己已经取得多少进步)”可知,空处应是一个过渡句,从给出建议使用一个素描本进行小规模的学习和实践,到回顾自己的艺术之旅,所以C项“Don’t throw away your beginner art. (不要扔掉你的初学时的艺术作品)”符合文意,和后文形成顺承关系。故选C项。
7.分析设空处,位于段尾,是对本段的总结,根据前文“Paint often and paint from life. There’s no better way to improve than to put in those brush miles. Whether you paint still lifes, portraits, or landscapes, paint from life as much as possible. (经常作画,且从生活中作画。没有什么比不断练习更能提高你的艺术水平了。无论你是绘制静物、肖像还是风景,都要尽可能地从真实生活中去观察和绘制)”可知,本段主要讲述不断练习绘画,所以G项“You’ll develop that painting muscle memory that only comes with repetition. (你会逐渐形成只有通过反复练习才能获得的绘画肌肉记忆)”是对前文的总结。故选G项。
8.分析设空处,空处位于第二句,此处应是对前一句的进一步解释,并同时引出后文,根据前文“Continually challenge yourself to try something new. (不断挑战自己,尝试新事物)”以及后文“Artistic growth can be a bit painful. (艺术的成长可能会有点痛苦)”可知,A项“Get out of your comfort zone. (走出你的舒适区)”是对前句的进一步说明,和后文构成顺承关系。故选A项。

You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but probably won't result in a useful response.
