Located in the Oaxaca, Mexico, the fishing village Huatulco is home to thousands of baby turtles. I had three open days on my calendar, and a desire to save some turtles. And so, away I went to Huatulco with a powerhouse of willing protectors calling themselves Wildcoast.
To carry out my mission, I was taken to La Escobilla to experience Wildcoast in action. Just one hour north of Huatulco, this protected beach is where mass turtle nesting happens. The natural phenomenon occurs at 12 beaches around the world, three of which are in Mexico. Having just four days during rainy season, thousands of female sea turtles go ashore to lay their eggs.
Between threats like illegal hunters, natural enemies and oil spills, the hatchlings (幼龟) have the whole world against them. As recently as 2012, turtle hunting was not only common practice, but an important part of the culture and diet in the Oaxacan communities.
Wildcoast rescues turtle eggs and recreates habitats. Thanks to their efforts, various sea turtles have made a major comeback, with now over 72 million turtles being born.
I got to hold 50 of the hatchlings in a bowl. Statistically speaking, just one in 1,000 baby turtles will make it to adulthood. Staring at the bowl, I so badly wanted them to find shelter somewhere in the ocean.
Finally, it was time to set free those little ones. Having made sure no suspicious (可疑的) people were nearby, I let out the hatchlings. With each set of waves, we witnessed the survival of the fittest, some crawling (爬行) past the whitewash while others crashed back to shore. A bunch of birds was ready to div e into the sea for their targets.
“One in 1,000.”
Nature was both cruel and sympathetic. After 30 long minutes, the last hatchling made its way to the sea.
4. What is Wildcoast?
A. A lively beach housing various wild animals.
B. An official organization tackling ocean oil leaks.
C. An experienced team exploring the coastal areas.
D. A voluntary group assisting the survival of turtles.
5. Why was the author taken to La Escobilla?
A. To liberate collected hatchlings.
B. To protect dedicate turtle eggs.
C. To witness mass turtle nesting.
D. To record Oaxacan cultures.
6. Which threat does the author want to protect the turtles from?
A. Water pollution. B. Human hunting.
C. Natural enemies. D. Ocean waves.
7. How might the author feel when seeing the hatchlings crawling?
A. Relieved. B. Attached.
C. Concerned. D. Annoyed.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. B 7. C

Many construction sites today look like something out of a sci-fi movie, filled with automated robots, tablets and so on. Increasingly complex software, together with hardware, is changing the construction industry.
Struggling with worker shortages, rising project costs and other crises, construction contractors cannot afford to waste a single resource. Inaccurate building, which causes mistakes and rework, is a project killer and contributor to these issues. Rework accounts for more than 30% of all work on site. That’s where technology can lend a hand.
Long gone are the days when construction crews relied on paper designs. Instead, they use computer-aided design technology to create and interact with detailed 3D models. This digitization of the design and build process gives construction crews and engineers the ability to control, simulate (模拟) and visualize these models in real time.
As we enter the age of the megaproject (大型工程) construction, professionals must build increasingly complex structures, and there is great demand for precision and speed, within budget and with minimal waste. Sometimes, a minor error at the start of a project can have a catastrophic effect later if not identified and addressed properly, hugely extending the project timeline and wasting materials and energy.
Digital information is accurate and can be shared easily, especially using cloud platforms. Digitally enabled hardware can collect data in the field, building a home for AI in construction. AI can also handle project data and manage resources like materials and energy to free up time for other tasks. Architects and engineers are already adopting cutting-edge technology, reporting as much as nine times return on investment.
Faced with tight project deadlines and often unpredictable market challenges, it will take some time for the traditionally slow- moving industry to adjust, but it’s already happening and is accelerating. It’s catch on quickly, or be left in the dust.
12. What can technology do according to paragraph 2?
A. Ski p construction process.
B. Select qualified workers.
C. Recycle more waste.
D. Lower error rate.
13. What’s the advantage of computer-aided design?
A. Prettier models. B. Better interaction.
C. More creative designs. D. More flexible schedule.
14. What does the underlined word “catastrophic” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Disastrous. B. Distinctive.
C. Inappropriate. D. Comprehensive.
15. What does the author want to imply in the last paragraph?
A. The trend of digital construction is unavoidable.
B. The shift to digital construction requires close regulation.
C. The trend of digital construction is unpredictable.
D. The shift to digital construction demands more cooperation.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. A

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One September day, I volunteered at the Massachusetts animal shelter. My heart sank as I heard a slight meow from an abandoned cat carrier by the door. I opened it and took the cat in my arms. Immediately, she buried her face into my arms, her skinny body shaking, but she didn’t escape as if she knew I was there to help.
The doctor estimated her age to be about six. Although weak and underweight, she could return to normal with care. Unfortunately, she tested positive for feline leukemia(猫白血病), which is infectious with only a bite, without cure. Though infected cats can also live normal, happy lives, the doctor regretfully announced she was “unfit for groups”. The only choice was for a volunteer to adopt her.
Already having four cats, I had determined not to put them through the stress of learning to live with a new member. Plus, I had agreed with my husband that we had reached the animal limit. Nevertheless, I took her home anyway and quarantined(隔离) her in a spare room.
The first few nights were difficult. I spent as much time as I could with her. Gradually she seemed to accept her fate and waited every morning for me. Her appetite returned and soon she looked quite health y again. Before long, this cat began walking around the room as if she owned it — like a little princess, so “Princess” she was named.
Nine long months passed. While I tried to find her a home where she could be the only cat, it was fruitless and we finally accepted her presence.
Summer arrived. Every year, one shelter volunteer hosts a party. It was my turn that year. About thirty volunteers and their guests enjoyed barbecuing and sharing animal stories. Everyone wanted to see “the cat in the room”, so Princess received more than her share of attention. Jody, the Sunday morning volunteer, arrived and introduced her fiancé, Eric. We chatted for a while. Eric mentioned he once lost a cat named Queen, and was also quite interested in Princess.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I was totally unprepared for what happened next.

It turned out that Princess — I mean Queen — was lost when Eric was moving here.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I was totally unprepared for what happened next. Princess walked to him as usual, but there was obviously something special about Eric. With affection, she looked up at him, rubbed against his leg, and refused to leave him. Lifting her up, Eric said “This is my cat”, his voice trembling with excitement. Feeling totally at a loss, I was speechless for a long while. Noticing my confusion and the awkward silence, Eric began to explain his remark to me patiently. It felt like a century to me before I finally grasped what he said.
It turned out that Princess — I mean Queen — was lost when Eric was moving here. Raised strictly indoors due to the virus, the cat was so frightened when taken out that she ran away. Of course, Eric was heartbroken and tried every means to find her, but all in vain. It was like the cat just disappeared into thin air. Gradually, Eric accepted the reality, so he was completely unprepared for the reunion that day. The next day, Eric took Queen away. I almost cried. Looking back, I waited almost a year for a miracle to happen, but it was worth the effort.

Tobacco use and its negative impacts on health have been well-documented for decades. Traditional tobacco products such as cigarettes, have been linked to a wide range of health problems, including cancer, heart disease and respiratory (呼吸的) disorders. The burning process of cigarettes releases harmful chemicals and poisons including tar, carbon monoxide and nicotine, a highly addictive substance.
According to a survey, 78.3% of smokers start smoking before age 20. To prevent young people from smoking and impacting their health, every kind of related product is firmly controlled by departments concerned.
The countless downsides to smoking should give smokers pause and encourage them to quit. Quitting tobacco improves your health and reduces your risk of previously mentioned diseases. It can also improve your appearance. Tobacco use can cause wrinkles and yellow teeth while quitting can lead to healthier skin, whiter teeth and fresher breath. Smoking even dulls your senses of taste and smell. By stopping tobacco use, your senses recover, leading to enhanced enjoyment of food and drinks.
Unfortunately, quitting tobacco isn’t easy. Most people will encounter numerous challenges including nicotine withdrawal and symptoms such as cravings (渴望), anger and difficulty concentrating. Supportive social environments, coping strategies and professional help are necessary for overcoming these troubles and living a smoke - free life.
Most importantly, make a plan and stick to it when you’ re ready to quit. For instance, avoid situations associated with smoking. Find alternatives or distractions like exercise or hobbies to take your mind off it. In terms of mental aspects, stay positive and energetic and celebrate small victories. Remind yourself often of why you want to quit. In the end, you’ll be healthier and glad you did!

Gradually, she seemed to accept her fate and waited every morning for me.
