“Everything happens for the best.” my mother said whenever things weren’t going my way. “Don’t worry. One day your luck will change.”
I found mom was right after I finished my college education. I had decided to try for a job in a radio station. I wanted to host a sports program one day. I went to Chicago and knocked at the door of every station. But I got turned down every time.
In one station, a kind lady said my problem was that I hadn’t got enough experience. “Get some work in a small station and work your way up,” she said.
I went back home. I couldn’t get a job there, either. I felt really down. “Your luck will change,” Mom said to me. I tried another radio station in Iowa. But the owner told me he had already had someone. As I left his office, I asked, “How can someone be a sports announcer (播音员) if he can’t get a job in a radio station?”
I was waiting for the lift when I heard the man call. “What did you mean? Do you know anything about football?” He put me in front of a microphone and asked me to try to imagine that I was giving my opinion on a football game. I succeeded.
On my way home, Mom’s words came back to me, “One day your luck will change, Son. And when it happens, you’ll feel doubly good because of all the hard work you’ve had.” At that moment I knew just what she meant.

Do you want to be a newsreader or a presenter? By reading this you’ll know how to take the first step (步骤) to be one! Making a radio programme is fun.
The most important thing you need to do is to decide what kind of programme you are going to offer. Have you always wanted to be a DJ just to play music? If so, what kind of music? And will others want to listen to the music you want to play?
Maybe it’s not music but information that you want to offer. You may want to do a talk show about a special subject. If so, great! Choosing something you’re interested in will make it a great experience for you. If you’re good at a subject, you’ll be known as a great presenter.
Or, maybe you would like to make a programme like an interview with others. Programmes like this are easy to listen to and always interesting to make because you’ll never know what a guest is going to say and maybe your subject will change.
43. The writer thinks it’s ________ to make a radio programme.

44. The most important thing you need to do is to decide ________.

Do you ever feel like you are just running from one activity to another? In school, do you hurry from one subject to another? When things happen so fast, it’s easy to get lost of what you’re doing or learning. It’s important to stop yourself every now and then to think about what you are doing or learning.
Self-reflection (反省) means slowing down and cooling yourself down, including calming (平静) your mind. By being calm and not going quickly, you give your brain a chance (机会) to think about what is already received (收到的). Some people like to do self-reflections only in their mind. Others write down in diaries or notes. Both of the ways work, depending on your own personal learning. You can follow the steps to do self-reflection.
First, choose the proper time to do it. School textbooks are divided (划分) into units of study. This makes it easier to begin self-reflection. Look for time when you complete a unit of study. Sometimes you know the unit is over because there is some kind of test. Use these natural breaks to stop and do self-reflection.
Then, find a quiet place and take out your reflection diary. Write down some notes on the new things that you learned in the unit. Let your mind think about the notes you’ve written before and make some connections (联系).
Finally, think about things that you’re not sure of. Maybe you learned a new way to work out a math problem, but you’re not sure when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to look for answers the next time you are working with the same topic.
Self-reflection is important for a successful student. If you have never taken the time to do self-reflection, try it now.
46. According to Paragraph 2, people CANNOT do self-reflection by ______.

How quickly can you count from one to ten? Do you use ten different words to do it? Can you do it in English, or do you have to use your first language? Do you count on your fingers? Many people think that numbers and math are the same all over the world. But scientists have discovered that it is not true.
People in different parts of the world use different ways to count on their fingers. In the United States, people begin counting with their first finger. They then extend the rest of their fingers and finally the thumb (大拇指) to count to five. Then they repeat this with the other hand to get to ten. In China, people count by using different finger positions. In this way, a Chinese person can easily count to ten on only one hand.
Besides ways of finger counting, scientists have found that cultures and languages are also different when it comes to numbers. Some languages have only a few words for numbers, and others have no words for numbers. For example, the aboriginal, people in Australia don’t have hand movements to stand for numbers. They don’t even have words for numbers. However, they are still able to understand different ideas about numbers. Similarly, people of the Piraha tribe in northwestern Brazil don’t have words for numbers such as “one” or “three”. They are not able to say “five trees” or “ten trees” but can say “some trees”, “more trees” or “many trees”.
Professor Edward Gibson from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said that most people believe that everyone knows how to count, “ But here is a group that does not count. They could learn, but it’s not useful in their culture, so they’ve never picked it up.”
50. Why does the writer list the four questions at the beginning of the passage?
A. To make a survey. B. To interest the readers.
C. To give examples. D. To interview the readers.
51. According to Paragraph 2, what is the difference between the US and China in finger counting?
A. People from China use finger positions to do counting.
B. People from the US usually begin counting with their thumb.
C. People from China count much faster than people from the US.
D. People from the US use only one hand to count from one to ten.
52. Which of the following is TRUE about aboriginal Australians?
A. There are ideas of numbers in their life.
B. There is no “some trees” in their language.
C. They have only a few words for numbers.
D. They have hand movements for numbers.

1. —You know many old people in China live in the village________
—I think so. We should visit them from time to time. Then, they won’t feel ________
A. alone; alone B. lonely; lonely C. alone; lonely D. lonely; alone
2. Mrs Smith gave her son some medicine and asked him to ______ it twice a day.
A. pay B. take C. cost D. make
【答案】B
【解析】
【详解】句意:史密斯太太给她儿子一些药,让他一天吃两次。A. pay支付;B. take带走,吃;C. cost花费;D. make制作;根据Mrs Smith gave her son some medicine可知是让他吃药,和take the medicine吃药,故选B

考查现在完成时。for three years ago表述错误;since last year从去年开始;three years ago三年前;last year去年。本句是现在完成时,C和D是一般过去时的时间状语,所以排除选项C和D;现在完成时的时间标志词可以用“since+过去某个时间点”或“for+时间段”。故选B。
4. Uncle John ________ his hometown for twelve years.
A. left B. has left
C. has gone D. has been away from
【答案】D
【解析】
【详解】句意:约翰叔叔离开家乡十二年了。

C. where can we find a bank D. when we can go to the nearest bank
【答案】A
6. — We have red and yellow T-shirts. Which color do you like?
— I’m afraid __________. I think blue will be OK.
A. both B. either C. neither D. none
【答案】C
【解析】

“Everything happens for the best.” my mother said whenever things weren’t going my way. “Don’t worry. One day your luck will change.”

In one station a kind lady said my problem was that I hadn’t got enough experience.

A. To make a survey. B. To interest the readers.
C. To give examples. D. To interview the readers.
51. According to Paragraph 2, what is the difference between the US and China in finger counting?

Today, I’m very lucky to work as an archaeologist(考古学家). It’s exciting work. Holding a piece of history is really fantastic.
I decided what I wanted to be at the age of nine. But the road wasn’t easy. Along the way I was told many things: I was too young. I wasn’t good enough, I should get married and have kids, ... All these words really got me down, but I chose to follow my heart and move on.
I needed money to support my study, so I asked for six grants(经费). The first five replies said no. At the beginning, it hurt. But the next no hurt a little less. Six months later, the last reply came. This time it was yes. Finally, I could go on with my archaeological work.
As you can see, so many noes didn’t beat me. Instead, they made me stronger and helped me grow. For anyone thinking of a dream job, I would say:_____________________________
