It was a hot day in Florida. The school year had just ended and it was time for summer vacation. We had just gotten a little black dog who we named One- Eyed. We chose that name because he could only see out of one eye.
Everybody wanted to do something for the dog: feed him, teach him tricks and take long walks with him. Everybody was so happy to have this active, playful and furry new addition to our family. Everybody, that is, except my mom and me.
All my mom saw when she looked at the dog was someone else to clean up after. Shedding (脱毛), messy and muddy, he bounced all over the house. All Mom seemed to care about was getting the house cleaned. My mom began to put Clorox (漂白水) in the bathtub. There was no messing with Mom when she started cleaning, so I decided to move out of the way, which is a move I’d been practicing for long.Being the youngest in my family has had its advantages. More than a few times I was spoiled or everyone said I was the cutest.
But being the youngest also came with its fair share of troubles.“ You’ re too young!” “ You’ll mess this up!” they’d often say. I knew that my family loved me but I couldn’t wait to show them I could do things by myself.
Every time I asked my brother or my sister if I could pet One-Eyed, they would shout, “ No!” or tell me that I had germs (细菌) and if I touched One-Eyed he would die! I really believed them. Once I even confessed to my mom that I touched the dog when no one noticed. At first, my mom seemed very confused, but then she realized. My mom scolded my brother and sister, “ You’d better stop teasing your little brother!” Little brother! That’s exactly what I was. That really got my blood boiling! Secretly, I decided, “I will show them what a little kid can do!”

One day, with no one else home, I stole into the bathroom with dirty One-Eyed. One-Eyed looked at me strangely, obviously not understanding what I was doing. I took my sister’s shampoo and poured the whole bottle into the bathtub. Then I coaxed the dog in and started scrubbing the dirt off him with our towels. However, things quickly got messy. Soap and water splashed everywhere; bubbles floated like tiny, soapy snowflakes. One-Eyed shook himself vigorously and barked excitedly, soon turning the bathroom into a wet battleground. It should have been my secret mission, but now, it turned into a disaster! Panicking, I ran out to seek help, only to find my mom at the door.
My mom came back with my brother and sister, seeing what had happened. “Well, well, what do we have here?” she chuckled, wiping away tears of laughter. I stammered, admitting everything. Instead of scolding me, she bent down and gave me a gentle hug,“ I knew you just want to help. Straightening up” , she suggested, “Now shall we clean up the mess together, young man?” “Yes, ma’am !” I nodded. Even though we never actually had a conversation about my being the youngest, I think Mom understood I was trying to make my own place in our family. Bathing the dog might not sound like a Declaration of Independence, but for a six-year-old, well, it was my best shot.

One day, with no one else home, I stole into the bathroom with dirty One-Eyed. I had been watching my mom and siblings closely, learning how to bathe a dog. I filled the tub with warm water and a few drops of dog shampoo, making sure it was just the right temperature. With a sense of determination, I gently placed One-Eyed into the water and began to lather him up, being careful around his eye. I was amazed at how well he behaved, as if he understood that I was trying to take care of him. As I scrubbed and rinsed, I felt a growing sense of pride and accomplishment. This was my chance to prove that I was capable of more than just being the "little brother."
My mom came back with my brother and sister, seeing what had happened. The bathroom was a bit of a mess, with water and dog hair everywhere, but One-Eyed was clean and drying off on a towel I had laid out. At first, they were shocked, but then they saw the beaming smile on my face and the clean dog. My mom's eyes softened, and she gave me a hug, acknowledging my effort. My siblings, although a bit embarrassed about their earlier teasing, also had to admit that I had done a good job. They even apologized for underestimating me. From that day on, I was no longer just the "little brother" but also a responsible member of the family who could take care of our beloved pet. It was a small victory, but one that meant the world to me, and One-Eyed and I became inseparable friends.

One day, with no one else home, I stole into the bathroom with dirty One-Eyed. Armed with a gentle dog shampoo and a soft brush, I embarked on a mission to transform our scruffy pup into a pristine companion. I had watched my family give baths before, so I knew the basics. But this was my first solo attempt, and I was determined to do it right. I talked soothingly to One-Eyed as I tested the water temperature and eased him into the tub. With each stroke of the brush, I could see the dirt and grime wash away, replaced by a gleaming coat of fur. One-Eyed seemed to appreciate my efforts, wagging his tail and looking up at me with his one bright eye.
My mom came back with my brother and sister, seeing what had happened. The initial surprise on their faces quickly turned into admiration. The once messy bathroom was now a testament to my efforts, with One-Eyed standing clean and proud, his single eye sparkling. My siblings exchanged glances, their teasing replaced with a newfound respect. My mom, her hands on her hips, surveyed the scene with a mix of astonishment and pride. She ruffled my hair affectionately and declared, "Looks like our little one is growing up." Their approval fueled my confidence, and I knew I had crossed a threshold. I had not only bathed One-Eyed but also washed away the doubts about my capabilities. From then on, I was no longer just the youngest; I was a proactive contributor to our family's daily life, ready to take on new challenges and responsibilities.
