一、阅读理解(本大题共15小题,共37.5分)
Thanksgiving is an important festival in North America. We interviewed several students from the USA and Canada. Here is what they have told us about their Thanksgiving experiences.
Josie from New York, USA
“In America, Thanksgiving is celebrated every year at the end of November. It is to remember the first group of people from Europe to live in America. When they first arrived, they found the environment strange. But they learned to survive after some native American friends showed them how to grow and find food. Thanksgiving is meant to be a traditional celebration.”
Todd from California, USA
“Thanksgiving is the first day of Christmas shopping. That means we have four weeks to buy Christmas presents for our families and friends. For me and my friends, the most important part of the festival is the big football game on TV. The match is watched by millions of people all over America. Thanksgiving is seen as an exciting day for football!”
Ian from Saskatoon, Canada
“In Canada, Thanksgiving is held on the second Monday in October. On the Sunday before Thanksgiving Day, many people go to church. Thanks is given for all the good things that happened to them during the year. I always give thanks for the nice big turkey I’m going to have at the family dinner! Like all festivals, Thanksgiving is about food!”
Katie from Maritimes, Canada
“On Thanksgiving Day, we have dinner with all our cousins, aunts and uncles. It is always very busy. Sometimes we have two Thanksgiving dinners because we go to both our grandparents’ houses. The dinner is usually attended by more than twenty people at each house! My mother and my aunts do all the cooking but the washingup is done by me and my cousins. And that’s not an easy job! But I don’t mind because Thanksgiving is meant to be a time to give thanks.”

There have been few precious positives during the COVID-19 pandemic but academies may have unearthed one: People look more attractive in protective masks.
Researchers at Cardiff University were surprised to find that both men and women were: judged to look better with a face covering hiding the lower half of their faces.
Dr Michael Lewis, a reader from Cardiff University’s school of psychology and an expert in faces, said research carried out before the pandemic had found that medical face masks reduced attractiveness because they were associated with disease or illness.
“We wanted to test whether the idea had changed since face coverings became common and understand whether the type of mask had any effect,” he said.
“Our study suggests faces are considered more attractive when covered by medical face masks. This may be because we’re used to healthcare workers wearing blue masks and now we associate these with people in caring or medical professions. At a time when we feel weak, we may find the wearing of medical masks makes us feel less worried or frightened and so we feel more positive towards the wearer.”
The first part of the research was carried out in February 2021. Forty-three women were asked to rate on a scale of one to ten the attractiveness of images of male faces without a mask, wearing a plain cloth mask, a blue medical face mask, and holding a plain black book covering the area a face mask would hide.
The participants said those wearing a cloth mask were significantly more attractive than the ones with no masks or whose faces were partly obscured (掩盖) by the book. But the medical face mask—which was just a normal, disposable kind—made the wearer look even better.
“The results run counter to the pre-pandemic research where it was thought that masks made people think about disease and that the person should be avoided.” said Lewis. “The pandemic has changed our psychology in how we view the wearers of masks. When we see someone wearing a mask we no longer think ‘that person has a disease, and I need to stay away’.”
4.What was people’s attitude to wearing a mask before the pandemic?
A.Doubtful. B.Favourable. C.Confused. D.Negative.
5.What can wearing a mask offer us according to the new study?
A.A sense of pride. B.A sense of safety.
C.A decrease in confidence. D.An improvement in health condition.
6.Which of the following makes us most attractive according to the research?
A.Leaving the face uncovered. B.Wearing a plain cloth mask.
C.Wearing a blue medical mask. D.Hiding the face partly with a book.
7.What does the underlined phrase “run counter to” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Be contrary to. B.Be similar to. C.Be consistent with. D.Be based on.
The first ever 3D-printed steel bridge has opened in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It was created by robotic arms using welding torches (焊枪) to place the structure of the bridge layer by layer, and was made of 4,500 kilograms of stainless steel.
The 12-metre-long MX3D Bridge was built by four commercially available industrial robots and took six months to print. The structure was transported to its location over the Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal in central Amsterdam last week. Now it is open to walkers and cyclists.
More than a dozen sensors attached to the bridge after the printing was completed will monitor pressure, movement, shakiness and temperature across the structure as people pass over it and the weather changes. This data will be fed into a digital model of the bridge.
Engineers will use this model to study the properties of the unique material and will employ machine learning to spot any trends in the data that could indicate maintenance is necessary. They also hope it will help designers understand how 3D-printed steel might be used for larger and more complex building projects.
Mark Girolami at the University of Cambridge, who is working on the digital model with a team at the Alan Turing Institute in London, says that investigations into bridge failures often display deterioration (退化) that was missed. Constant data feedback may have been able to prevent these failures by providing an early warning, he says.
Girolami says that early indications for the strength of 3D-printed steel are positive. “One of the things that we found is that the strength characteristics are dependent on the directions of the printing. But what was in some sense surprising was that the baseline strength was what you would expect of just rolled steel, and it actually increased in some directions.”
8.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The construction of the bridge. B.The size of the model.
C.The transportation of the structure. D.The completion of the bridge.
9.What will be used to collect related data about the bridge?
A.Robotic arms. B.Sensors. C.Digital models. D.Video monitors.
10.What’s Mark Girolami’s attitude towards the bridge?
A.Skeptical. B.Indifferent. C.Critical. D.Supportive.
11.What is the main idea of the text?
A.The 3D-printing technology is developing rapidly.
B.We have entered the times of 3D-printing technology.
C.The first ever 3D-printed steel bridge has come out.
D.The Netherlands is famous for the first ever 3D-printed steel bridge.

Steps for a Successful College Application
When it comes to getting into the college of your choice, your college application is the most important tool you have in your hands. 16 , while a bad one can land you at the bottom. Keep the following tips in mind when you are going through the college application process and you’ll be on the road to admission.
Be Prepared
17 , carefully look over all the questions and requirements. Dedicate a page to each college with a checklist of everything you’ll need to submit, such as transcripts, recommendations, the essay, copies of awards/certificates, etc.
18
Former Records Technician, Carmen Huff, says the best thing students do is to get their applications early—or at least by the deadline. Colleges and universities receive so many applications that they don’t have the time to accept late ones. The more time you give the college or university to process your application, the more time you’ll have to deal with any problems that might arise, Huff says.
Watch Your GPA and Test Scores
This is the first thing that most universities look at. For example, most four- year colleges don’t have a GPA requirement, but top Ivy Leagues(常春藤联盟) usually only accept students with a 3.5 or higher GPA.However, if your GPA is weak, don’t give up applying. 19
Write an Amazing Essay
A great essay can help tip the balance in your favor. 20 . Many colleges require two essays, one short and one long. What you write not only shows how literate you are, but also provides the reader with an impression of your values and beliefs.
A.Be On Time
B.Be Patient and Determined

47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was working and living in Switzerland for a few years. My big hobby then was windsurfing on the big lakes nearby. Unfortunately, to get wind in the mountains, you often needed to wait for a storm to pass by.
Late one afternoon. I was out windsurfing with about ten other friends on just such a day when it started getting really windy, too much to handle. I thought about heading in, as I was about a mile offshore on this big lake. But then the sirens(警报器)on the shore started sounding and flashing that a major storm was headed our way. About half the guys made it to the beach while those remaining. including me, hung onto our boards in the water trying to swim to shore. It started getting dark quickly and the wind blew even harder. This storm was going to be a big one.
A rescue boat was sent out from a nearby harbor ad luckily managed to drag everyone except me back to shore. I was a little further out than the others and all my waving and screaming was now lost in the roaring wind. I was beginning to panic while I helplessly looked on and watched the rescue boat getting stuck by breaking waves while looking for me. My friends onshore knew I was out there and were doing everything they could to help find me.
It was now dark and I was being blown further offshore than ever. I eventually saw the search lights go out on the rescue boat and head back in to the harbor as it was too dangerous to continue. They had given up the search for me. I was now all alone, The storm was getting stronger and the board started flipping(迅速翻动)across the white water by itself as I desperately tried to hold to it.
Then it happened. A wave of relief came over me. as I realized there was no one left to help me. I could only rely on myself. I had to be the rescuer, not the victim.

As soon as I made the decision, I began to spare no efforts to swim the opposite. The storm was still strong and so was my will to struggle with and survive it.
Hours later, tired and cold. I made it to the other side and saw the light of a farm house. Without any hesitation, I headed to the house and knocked at the door. Though a little surprised, the owner allowed me to have a rest and warm myself in her house friendly after I told her what had just happened to me. Two hours later, the rescue staff arrived when the storm went by. They sent me back with their boat, which I was so thankful for. When we were approaching the shore, I saw all my friends still waiting for me there. I felt so excited and moved.
