Alex Davani is mostly an A-student at Don Juan Avila Middle School, but he was not good at math last year. To get better grades in math, Davani learned to solve the Rubik’s Cube.
Davani wasn’t the only one. Teacher Ron McDevitt gave all his students a chance of getting a high grade if they could beat the cube, and he gave more scores for faster times. “A Rubik’s Cube is a lot like math,” explained McDevitt. “If you make one bad move with the cube, you have to go back a step or start over. At math, it’s the same way. It forces you to go slowly and be patient.”
For Davani, solving the cube was great fun. With about six months of practice, he could solve the Rubik’s Cube in under 30 seconds. So Davani decided to enter a world competition in Las Vegas. Davani is placed in the middle among about 800 competitors, and with more practice, he hopes to raise his position next year. He also got to meet cubers from 37 countries, and had lunch with four of the best cubers.
So how does Davani solve the cube so quickly? “It’s mostly just practice,” he said. “You will form muscle memory after lots of practice. You memorize the method and you don’t even have to think about it. Your fingers move naturally.”
“I teach my kids how to solve it and they can vanquish me now,” said McDevitt whose best record is around two minutes, much longer than many of his students. “I’ve never had a student take it as far as Davani and compete. That’s pretty cool.”
4. Why did Davani learn to solve the Rubik’s Cube?
A To enrich his life. B. To get a higher grade in math.
C. To develop a new interest. D. To prepare for a competition.
5. In what way is the Rubik’s Cube like math?
A. They both require patience. B. They both test people’s memory.
C. They both need people to finish quickly. D. They both teach people to learn from mistakes.
6. What is Davani’s secret to solving the cube so quickly?
A. He learns from others’ experience. B. He has strong muscles.
C. He has good memory. D. He practices hard.
7. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “vanquish” in the last paragraph?
A. Believe. B. Follow. C. Beat. D. Award.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. D 7. C

Too much screen time for kids can lead to poor health the American Heart Association (AHA) says. A scientific statement published by the AHA in the medical journal Circulation said screen time from smartphones, tablet computers and other devices can lead kids to a sedentary(惯于久坐不动的) lifestyle ,increasing the possibility that they grow up as overweight or obese(肥胖的).
The AHA is the latest organization urging parents to limit how much time their kids spend in front of screens. It recommends children get one to two hours of screen time each day. Although television viewing among children and teens has dropped, the use of smartphones and tablet computers has surged.
“Although the mechanisms(机制) linking screen time to obesity are not entirely clear, there are real concerns that screens influence eating behaviors, mainly because children don’t notice when they are full when eating in front of a screen,” said Tracie Barnett, a researcher at the INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier Research Centre,in a statement.
Barnett, one of the authors of the statement, also urges parents to keep screens out of kids’bedrooms, raising the fear that too much screen time can affect sleep.
Many studies have warned about the potential (潜在的) negative effects of too much screen time. Last year, a study from researchers at San Diego State University(SDSU) found nearly half of teens who spent five or more hours in front of screens every day experienced long periods of hopelessness or sadness.
Apple, who makes the iOS mobile platform, plans to introduce new tools to devices to help users cut back on screen time. As for iOS 12,iPhones will include a screen time feature where users can control and review how they spend time on their mobile devices. Another company that makes the Android platform will introduce “digital well-being” tools such as screen time limits and a “wind down” option to encourage users to put down their phones before bed.
12. Which can replace the underlined word “surged” in paragraph 2?
A. Increased suddenly. B. Decreased slowly.
C. Stayed the same. D. Lost the balance.
13. How do screens influence children’s eating behavior?
A. By changing the time they eat. B. By changing their taste for food.
C. By influencing how fast they eat. D. By influencing their feeling of fullness.
14. What effect did too much screen time have in SDSU’s study?
A. It affected children’s sleep. B. It led to children’s obesity.
C. It resulted in diet problems. D. It negatively influenced moods.
15. What will Apple do to deal with the screen time problem?
A. Reduce its products’ battery life.
B. Provide a screen time feature.
C. Introduce “digital well-being” tools.
D. Add a “wind down” option to its products.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. D 15. B

Many studies have warned about the potential (潜在) negative effects of too much screen time.
