Every now and then you come across a story so powerful that it grabs you by the throat and just won’t let go. Such is the story of Jean- Dominique — locked in his body as one is trapped in a diving bell (a container carrying people to the deep sea), yet free to wander, dream and travel to faraway places using only his mind.
Jean, an editor of the ELLE magazine, lived a fast pace life in the world of fashion. Then one day, he had a severe disease that left him an extremely rare condition. Jean’s mind was fully functioning and aware while the blinking (眨) of his left eye was his only means of communication.
Imagine for just a moment what it would be like to lie perfectly still, and the only thing you can move is your left eye. As an experiment — try to read the rest of this article using only your left eye.
Jean’s therapist (治疗专家) designed a means for him to communicate by organizing all the letters by their frequency and reading each letter. Jean would blink once when the correct letter was read that matched the letter in the word he was thinking. He would painstakingly spell each word in the sentence he was thinking. Using this method he was able to pen his memoir (自传). He tells how he would mentally write, edit and rewrite his sentences before communicating them to his therapist.
“My diving bell becomes less unbearable, and my mind takes flight like a butterfly. There is so much to do. You can wander off in space or in time.” Jean-Dominique writes in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
Near the end of his book, Jean is reduced to examining the contents of the half-opened purse of his assistant. Tissues, folded franc notes, subway tickets, keys, “keys” he thinks: “Does the universe contain keys for opening up my diving bell? A subway line with no last-stop? A currency strong enough to buy my freedom back? We must keep looking. I’ll be off now.” Thus he ends the book.
24. Why does the author use “a diving bell”?
A. To attract readers’ attention.
B. To generate readers’ sympathy.
C. To show Jean’s complete immobility.
D. To stress Jean’s need for freedom of mind.
25. What is the purpose of paragraph 3?
A. To explain how to read with one eye.
B. To invite readers to do an experiment.
C. To call for attention to physical health.
D. To involve readers in what Jean had to face.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Jean learning to “write”. B. Jean publishing his memoir.
C. Jean communicating poorly. D. Jean getting on with his doctor.
27. What does Jean intend to express at the end of his book?
A. The life cycles.
B. A desire for wealth.
C. His mental strength.
D. Gratitude to his assistant.
C 25. D 26. A 27. C
根据文章第一段“Such is the story of Jean- Dominique- locked in his body as one is trapped in a diving bell (a container carrying people to the deep sea), yet free to wander, dream and travel to faraway places using only his mind.(这就是Jean-Dominique的故事——他的身体像被困在潜水钟(一种载人潜入深海的容器)里一样无法动弹,但他的思想却是自由的,可以随意漫游、梦想并远行至遥远的地方。)”,以及第二段“Jean, an editor of the ELLE magazine, lived a fast pace life in the world of fashion. Then one day, he had a severe disease that left him an extremely rare condition.(Jean曾是《ELLE》杂志的一名编辑,在时尚界过着快节奏的生活。然而,有一天,他患上了一种严重的疾病,导致他陷入了一种极其罕见的状况。)”可知,作者使用“a diving bell”是为了形象地展示Jean的身体完全无法动弹的状态,就像被困在潜水钟里一样。这种比喻帮助读者更直观地理解Jean所经历的困境,故选C。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Imagine for just a moment what it would be like to lie perfectly still, and the only thing you can move is your left eye. As an experiment— try to read the rest of this article using only your left eye.(想象一下,如果你必须完全静止地躺着,唯一能动的只有左眼,那会是一种怎样的体验。作为一次尝试——试着只用你的左眼来阅读这篇文章的剩余部分。)”可推断,第三段的目的是让读者通过尝试只用左眼阅读来体验Jean所面临的困境,从而更深入地理解和感受他所经历的艰难。这种方式有助于读者与Jean的处境产生共鸣。故选D。
【26题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第四段“Jean’s therapist(治疗专家) designed a means for him to communicate by organizing all the letters by their frequency and reading each letter. Jean would blink once when the correct letter was read that matched the letter in the word he was thinking. He would painstakingly spell each word in the sentence he was thinking. Using this method he was able to pen his memoir(自传).(Jean的治疗专家设计了一种沟通方式,通过将所有字母按照出现频率排列,并逐一读出,Jean会在读到与他心中所想字母相匹配的字母时眨一次眼。他就这样痛苦地拼写出自己心中的每一个句子。用这种方法,他能够写下自己的回忆录。)”可知,第四段主要讲述了Jean如何通过眨动左眼与治疗专家沟通,并学会用这种方式拼写他心中的句子,从而完成他的自传。这种独特的“写作”方式是他为了克服身体无法动弹的困境而学会的。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Near the end of his book, Jean is reduced to examining the contents of the half- opened purse of his assistant. Tissues, folded franc notes, subway tickets, keys, “keys” he thinks: “Does the universe contain keys for opening up my diving bell? A subway line with no last- stop? A currency strong enough to buy my freedom back? We must keep looking. I’ll be off now.” Thus he ends the book.(在书的结尾部分,Jean只能查看他助理半开的钱包里的物品:纸巾、折好的法郎钞票、地铁票、钥匙。
C
Belonging is important in most cultures. It can give you a sense of purpose. Working alongside people who might be serving an important cause, or being on a championship team, or working together with people who share similar goals, values, or interests makes a person feel important and useful.
Sometimes, though, the belonging aspect can translate to a sense of “us versus them”. It can create a situation where you view someone who is not of your team or group as the enemy and the person to be feared. While this often happens in political contexts, it can also occur in daily life. You might hear the way someone talks, or look at their dress, or learn where they went to school, and depending on your alignment to a certain group you might consider them worthy of your attention, or ignore them because they don't belong where you belong.
The problem with belonging is that sometimes you begin to gain such a sense of purpose from it, that your group is what matters most. In some cases, you may even find ways to separate from others not in your group. The fact is that fundamentally we all belong to the human race. We all have the same make- up and design underneath, with different packaging around us.
When you use belonging to create separation, you are missing out on gifts that others might be able to share. It's one of the most hurtful and judgmental things you can do to someone else: dismissing them out of hand simply because they don't share the views of your group.
Become aware of your desire to belong, and try to be objective about your need for it. Belonging can be a powerful experience, and it can also serve to separate you. You might want to be separated from the people in “that group,” but you end up cutting yourself off from potential gifts and support that may be meaningful to you. Having beliefs and supporting noble causes is certainly important, and simply being part of a group isn’t fundamentally a bad thing; just become watchful about whether it translates into a refusal to accept someone who belongs elsewhere.
28. What does belonging give a person according to paragraph 1?
A. A sense of value. B. A chance to win.
C. The power of culture. D. The way to fame.
29. Which has the similar meaning to the underlined word “alignment”?
A. Restriction. B. Association.
C. Resolution. D. Contribution.
30. What is explained in paragraph 3?
A. The significance of groups.
B. The underlying unity of people.
C. The characteristics of belonging.
D. The attraction of the external world.
31. What advice does the author give about belonging?
A. Having a strong desire for it.
B. Satisfying your need from it.
C. Abandoning it for its likely dangers.
D. Balancing it with openness to others.
A 29. B 30. B 31. D
由第一段中“Working alongside people who might be serving an important cause, or being on a championship team, or working together with people who share similar goals, values, or interests makes a person feel important and useful.(与可能为重要事业服务的人一起工作,或者加入冠军队,或者与有着相似目标、价值观或兴趣的人一起合作,会让人感到重要和有用。)” 故选A项。
由文章第二段“You might hear the way someone talks, or look at their dress, or learn where they went to school, and depending on your alignment to a certain group you might consider them worthy of your attention, or ignore them because they don't belong where you belong.(你可能会听到别人说话的方式,或者看看他们的衣服,或者了解他们在哪里上学,根据你与某个群体的 ,你可能会认为他们值得你关注,或者因为他们不属于你所属的地方而忽略他们。)”
由文章第三段“The problem with belonging is that sometimes you begin to gain such a sense of purpose from it, that your group is what matters most. In some cases, you may even find ways to separate from others not in your group. The fact is that fundamentally we all belong to the human race. We all have the same make- up and design underneath, with different packaging around us.(归属感的问题在于,有时你会从中获得一种目的感,你的团队是最重要的。在某些情况下,你甚至可以找到与不在你团队中的其他人分开的方法。事实上,根本上我们都属于人类。我们在内在上有相同的构造和设计,只是外在包装不同。)”可知,本段主要讨论第三段解释了人类的基本统一性。故选B项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Become aware of your desire to belong, and try to be objective about your need for it.(意识到你对归属感的渴望,并试着客观地看待你对归属的需求。)”以及“Having beliefs and supporting noble causes is certainly important, and simply being part of a group isn't fundamentally a bad thing; just become watchful about whether it translates into a refusal to accept someone who belongs elsewhere.(拥有信仰和支持崇高事业当然很重要,仅仅成为一个群体的一员从根本上来说并不是一件坏事;只要警惕这是否意味着拒绝接受属于其他地方的人。)”
D
Illeism, put simply, is the practice of talking about oneself in the third person rather than the first person. This rhetorical device is often used by politicians to lend their words an air of objectivity. In his account of the Gallic War, for example, the emperor Julius Caesar wrote“ Caesar avenged (报复) the public” rather than “I avenged the public”. This small verbal shift seems intended to make the statement feel a little more like historical fact, recorded by an objective observer.
To the modern ear, illeism can sound a little silly or self- important - and we may even ridicule famous people who choose to talk in this way. Yet recent psychological research suggests that illeism can bring some real mental benefits. If we are trying to make a difficult decision, speaking about ourselves in the third person can help to calm the emotions that could lead our thinking off course, allowing us to find a wiser solution to our problem.
This approach corresponds to the scientific study of wisdom by Igor Grossmann at the University of Waterloo in Canada. The study revealed that the wisdom of people's reasoning can depend on the context. In particular, he found that their wise reasoning scores tended to be much higher when considering other people's situations than their own personal dilemmas. Grossmann called this“ Solomon's Paradox” after the ancient Biblical king, who was famous for advising others wisely, while making a series of disastrous personal decisions that ultimately left his kingdom in chaos.
By switching to the third person, our descriptions of the situation will start to sound as if we are talking about someone else rather than ourselves. This sense of detachment (抽离) would allow us to see the bigger picture, rather than getting caught up in our own feelings.
32. Why is Julius Caesar mentioned?
A. To present a fact. B. To serve as a proof.
C. To introduce a war. D. To recommend a device.
33. What key point is conveyed in paragraph 2?
A. Illeism supports clearer reasoning. B. Modern people dislike illeism.
C. The famous are careful about illeism. D. Illeism enhances multiple emotions.
34. What can we learn from Grossmann's study?
A. Dilemmas stimulate reasoning. B. Wisdom begins in wonder.
C. Bystanders are clear- sighted. D. Every man has his own trouble.
35. What is the best title of the text?
A. A Proven Device for Great Leaders
B. The Ancient Trick for Wiser Thinking
C. An Effective Way from a New Perspective
D. The Age- Old Practice in Modern Experiment
B 33. A 34. C 35. B

This small verbal shift seems intended to make the statement feel a little more like historical fact, recorded by an objective observer.(政客们经常使用这种修辞手法来使他们的言辞听起来更加客观。
根据文章第二段“Yet recent psychological research suggests that illeism can bring some real mental benefits. If we are trying to make a difficult decision, speaking about ourselves in the third person can help to calm the emotions that could lead our thinking off course, allowing us to find a wiser solution to our problem.(然而,最近的心理研究表明,illeism能带来一些实实在在的心理益处。当我们在努力做出艰难决定时,用第三人称来描述自己可以帮助我们平复那些可能让我们的思维偏离正轨的情绪,从而让我们能够找到更明智的解决方案。)”可知,illeism有助于我们在决策时保持清晰的思维,由此第二段的关键点是传达了illeism可以支持更清晰的推理。故选A。
根据文章第三段“The study revealed that the wisdom of people's reasoning can depend on the context. In particular, he found that their wise reasoning scores tended to be much higher when considering other people's situations than their own personal dilemmas. Grossmann called this“ Solomon's Paradox” after the ancient Biblical king, who was famous for advising others wisely, while making a series of disastrous personal decisions that ultimately left his kingdom in chaos.(该研究揭示了人们推理的智慧程度可能取决于上下文。
根据文章第一段“Illeism, put simply, is the practice of talking about oneself in the third person rather than the first person.(简而言之,illeism(第三人称自我指代)是指用第三人称而非第一人称来谈论自己一种修辞手法。)”
Throughout history, the word “courage” has been associated with images of heroism — soldiers charging into battle, firefighters storming into burning buildings, or activists standing firm against unfairness. ___36___ It is a multi-dimensional virtue in our daily lives, a strength that helps us sail through the challenges in our life.
___37___ This is the bravery we see in those who put themselves in the line of fire to protect others. It’s what enables a person to fight back against an attacker. It allows us to overcome our fears, pushing our bodies past our limits when necessary.
Moral courage is where the inner strength of our principles is truly tested. ___38___ Even when it’s unpopular or carries personal risk, we remain committed to our values. Witnesses refusing to be threatened in a court of law or citizens standing up to severe injustice all demonstrate extraordinary moral courage.
Finally, there is the courage of endurance and perseverance. This could be seen as the courage to keep training when every muscle in your body screams at you to stop. ___39___ Endurance and perseverance allow us to accomplish goals that may initially seem impossible.
These forms of courage are interconnected to give strength to the human character. Courage does not mean the absence of fear. ___40___ It is the quality that inspires awe(敬畏), yet exists within all of us, ready to be drawn out. G 37. F 38. D 39. E 40. C
由上文“Throughout history, the word ‘ourage’c has been associated with images of heroism—soldiers charging into battle, firefighters storming into burning buildings, or activists standing firm against unfairness.(纵观历史,‘勇气’一词一直与英雄主义的形象联系在一起——士兵冲入战斗,消防员冲进燃烧的建筑物,或坚决反对不公平的活动家。)” But it includes far more than just these extraordinary acts.(但它包括的远不止这些非凡的行为。)
由下文“This is the bravery we see in those who put themselves in the line of fire to protect others. It’s what enables a person to fight back against an attacker. It allows us to overcome our fears, pushing our bodies past our limits when necessary.(这就是我们在那些冒着生命危险保护他人的人身上看到的勇气。它使一个人能够反击攻击者。它使我们能够克服恐惧,在必要时将我们的身体推向极限。)”可知,这里都是指具体表现在行动上的勇气,即身体上的勇气,而F项One of the most visible forms is physical courage.(最明显的形式之一是身体上的勇气。)符合语境,对下文有总括作用,其中physical courage与下文pushing our bodies past our limits对应。故选F项。
由下文“Even when it’s unpopular or carries personal risk, we remain committed to our values.(即使它不受欢迎或带有个人风险,我们仍然致力于我们的价值观。) ”可知,这里主要讲道德勇气让我们坚持自己的价值观,而D项We should do what we know is right.(我们应该做我们认为正确的事。)符合语境,其中do what we know is right与下文 remain committed to our values对应,有启下作用。故选D项。
由上文“Finally, there is the courage of endurance and perseverance. This could be seen as the courage to keep training when every muscle in your body screams at you to stop.(最后,还有耐力和毅力的勇气。这可以被视为当你身体的每一块肌肉都在尖叫着让你停下来时,继续训练的勇气。)”可知,这里主要讲耐力和毅力的勇气,即坚持不屈服的精神,而E项It’s the stubborn refusal to give in to difficulties.(这是顽固地拒绝向困难屈服。)符合语境,It代指上文the courage of endurance and perseverance.,本句对耐力和毅力的勇气进一步解释,所以有承上作用。故选E项。
由上文“These forms of courage are interconnected to give strength to the human character. Courage does not mean the absence of fear.(这些形式的勇气是相互联系的,为人的性格赋予力量。勇气并不意味着没有恐惧。)”可知,这里表明勇气并不意味着没有恐惧,而C项Instead, it is about defeating it.(相反,这是关于击败它。)

Gabriel had always been fascinated by robots. His mother, however, did not think much of it. She often criticized him, urging him to focus on his schoolwork instead of those“ useless machines”, as she called them. She wanted him to spend more time on his books, and less time lost in the world of robotics. He, however, always worked quietly on parts, trying to create inventions that could solve everyday problems.
One day, Gabriel came back from school, bursting through the front door, holding a shining award in his hand. The gas detection robot he had built for months had just won first place in the regional competition. His heart raced as he imagined his mother would be proud this time.
“Mom! Look! I won!” he cried. His mother, standing at the kitchen counter, looked briefly. She sighed, “That’s nice, Gabriel, but I still don’t see what good it will do you. It’s not going to help you with your grades or get you into college. You need to focus on something more practical.” Her voice showed no interest. Gabriel remained quiet, determined to prove that what he was doing had value.
One evening, as the delicious smell of dinner floated through the house, an unexpected danger was quietly closing. Gabriel’s mother had been busy in the kitchen but had forgotten to turn off the gas. Unaware of the coming threat, she had wandered into the living room, settling down comfortably in front of the TV. The gas continued to escape, silently filling the air. The house was on the edge of a disaster.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly, a loud alarm rang through the house. Gabriel’s gas detection robot had sensed the leak and sprung into action. The shrill sound jolted his mother from her TV reverie, her heart pounding as she realized the danger they were in. Quickly, she rushed to the kitchen, turned off the gas, and opened all the windows to let the fresh air disperse the dangerous fumes. As the alarm ceased, she stood there, breathing a sigh of relief, suddenly understanding the significance of Gabriel’s invention. It wasn’t just a toy or a useless machine; it was a lifesaver.
Gabriel’s mother held the robot gently in her arms, waiting for Gabriel to get back from school. She couldn’t wait to tell him how his creation had prevented a potential tragedy. When Gabriel finally walked through the door, his mother greeted him with tears in her eyes and a smile on her face. “Gabriel, you were right,” she said, hugging him tightly. “This robot isn’t just a hobby; it’s something that can protect us, make our lives safer. I’m sorry I didn’t see it before.” Gabriel’s heart swelled with pride and joy. From that day on, his mother became his biggest supporter, encouraging him to pursue his passion for robotics and recognizing the value of his inventions in making the world a better, safer place.

To the modern ear illeism can sound a little silly or self- important - and we may even ridicule famous people who choose to talk in this way.
B The Ancient Trick for Wiser Thinking
C. An Effective Way from a New Perspective
D. The Age- Old Practice in Modern Experiment
