Why butterflies fly to the California coast
Many stops in Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove and Andrew Molera State Park, are overwintering sites where, from October to February, travelers can see thousands of butterflies gathering in forests in areas with mild temperatures, dappled (斑驳的) sunlight, high dampness, and little to no wind.

How to explore the Western Monarch Trail
The butterflies’ behavior varies at different times of day and depending on the weather. In the mornings, while temperatures are still cool, step out of the cabin (木屋) in the Fernwood Resort where you stay overnight, you’ll find many butterflies hanging together on the branches and trunks of trees at the overwintering sites. As the day starts to heat up-typically by late morning or early afternoon — you’ll be amazed at the phenomenon “sunburst” — the butterflies start flying around in search of nearby nectar. For anyone planning to fly to or from France in 2024, we’ve got a bit of inconvenient news-thousands of flights from four French airports are getting cancelled. It’s all because much of-the air traffic control system hasn’t been updated since the 1970s.
The air traffic control systems in Paris’ main airports are well overdue for an upgrade. Though the systems have received plenty of minor updates over the years, 2024 is the time for a huge improvement- it’s thought that around 80 percent of the system will need to be modernized.
Currently, workers still use an air traffic control process which was developed in the 1970s, including using paper strips to represent incoming planes. Thankfully, €1 billion is being invested into improving France’s air traffic control.
But that means there’ll be a large number of cancellations. According to BFM, it’s estimated that around 16,500 flights to or from Paris’ Charles de Gaulle, Orly, Le Bourget and Beauvais airports won’t go ahead. The number of passengers that passed through Paris Airports in 2022 was almost 44 million. Paris’ Charles de Gaulle saw 26.1 million passengers, and Paris Orly saw 15.7 million passengers. For the coming improvement, airlines that operate at these airports have been told to reduce their flight programme by 20 percent between March 9 and April 14. It’s during this period that the new system will be tested at Athis-Mons, France’s largest air traffic control centre.
Will your flight to France be impacted? Well, it’s up to each airline which flights won’t run, but it’s thought that long-distance routes will take priority. Air France has already cancelled some of theirs, notified passengers, and offered them same-day alternatives.
While this could mean that travelling through Paris is a faff (忙乱) in 2024, it’s estimated that 2.5 million flights pass through French airspace annually. With that much air traffic to control, it’d be good to have it all processed by something a bit more reliable than some pieces of paper.
4. What inconvenience will be caused in France according to the passage?
A. Airlines will decrease their flights. B. A number of flights will be delayed.
C. Flights to France will be unavailable. D. The airports will be under reconstruction.
5. Why are the figures listed in paragraph 4?
A. To illustrate the flight cancellations. B. To give examples of airport capacities.
C. To compare the numbers of passengers. D. To analyze the reasons for air traffic control.
6. What can happen to people travelling to France in 2024?
A. They will be offered a discount.
B. They might reschedule their flights.
C. They will have to cancel their travel plans.
D. They can only book tickets for long-distance routes.
7. What is the passage mainly about?
A. France’s largest air traffic control centre will be tested.
B. €l billion is being invested into modernizing four French airports.
C. France is cancelling flights for improving air traffic control system.
D. The number of passengers that pass through Paris’ airports will decrease.

Getting into college is a big step for high school graduates, and it comes with a lot of changes. For most students, it’s the first time they’ re living away from home and managing their own life. Not surprisingly, adapting to this new lifestyle can be challenging. The following four tips will make high school graduates better prepared for college life.
Goal setting
When setting goals, whether they’re academic, career, or personal, remember they should be attainable but not too easy, so that you really have to push yourself to achieve them, and feel rewarded when you do. Writing down your goals and breaking down each huge, long-term goal into smaller, more practical ones can help make it feel more real, and writing out a plan for achieving it can give you a road map to success
Interpersonal skills
At college, you will interact with fellow students, professors, librarians, and many others. Strong interpersonal skills will help you build relationships during this time, and get more out of them, if you feel that your interpersonal skills need some work, practice asking thoughtful questions and listening closely. Develop your understanding by putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, and enhance your self-confidence
Studying
With fewer in-class hours and more on-your-own learning, you’re required to really digest learning material rather than simply memorize facts. To be successful in college you’ll need to learn how to integrate large amounts of information obtained through reading, do research, and write papers. Organization is the key, so if you are not someone who is naturally organized, set up your study schedule.
Budgeting
Managing money is a critical life skill, and for many, it is at college that they develop it for the first time. Start by estimating your financial balance. Then give high priority to the expenses on basic needs and determine how much money to set aside every month to cover those costs. Don’t forget about savings and the fun stuff (movies, dinners out), too.
8. Who is this passage most probably written for?
A. College teachers. B. University graduates.
C. High school teachers. D. Would-be college students.
9. What is the author’s suggestion for reaching a huge goal?
A. Divide it into smaller, more achievable ones.
B. Reward oneself for each goal one has set.
C. Purchase a clear, updated road map.
D. Push oneself to an upper level
10. One of the suggested ways to enhance your interpersonal skills is to _________.
A. prepare complicated questions B. try on someone else’s shoes
C listen to others carefully D. take advantage of others
11. To learn how to manage money, the first thing to do is _________.
A. save money for financial investment B. Estimate one’s income and expenses
C. set aside money for fun activities D. open a personal bank account
D
Many of us remember the feeling of having our braces (牙套) regularly adjusted and retightened at the dentist’s. And interventions are based entirely upon the estimate of dentists and involve a great deal of trial and error, which can lead to too many visits to the dentist’s.
Professor Erleben and his team created a computer model that creates accurate 3D simulations (模拟) of an individual patient’s jaw, which dentists can use to predict how sets of braces should be designed to best straighten a patient’s teeth and plan the best possible treatment. To create these simulations, the computer model was used to map sets of human teeth after getting detailed CT images of teeth and the small, fine structures between the jawbone and the teeth. This type of precise digital simulation is referred to as a digital twin, a virtual model that lives in the cloud.
The virtual model can answer what’s happening in the real world, and do so instantly. For example, one can ask what would happen if you pushed on one tooth and get answers with regards to where it would move and how it would affect other teeth. The model also helps to predict the post treatment effect, achieve “visualization” of treatment, and facilitate patients to understand the plan of straightening their teeth. What’s more, it has enabled more flexible and convenient digital medical follow-up services.
The area of research that uses digital twins is relatively new. “However, we need to set up a sufficiently big database if digital twins are to really take root and benefit the healthcare industry,” Erleben said, “In the future, the virtual model can be used to plan, design and improve, and can therefore be used to operate companies, robots, factories and used much more in the energy, healthcare and other fields.”
12. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. The professional integrity of dentists. B. The current state of dental treatment.
C. The procedure of retightening braces. D. The intervention of modern technology.
13 Which was the first step in creating 3D simulations?
A. Predicting treatment effect. B. Designing a computer model.
C Drawing the shape of a mouth. D. Obtaining the details of teeth.
14. What is Professor Erleben’s attitude towards digital twins?
A. Doubtful. B. Curious. C. Favorable. D. Dismissive.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why digital twins make a hit B. Where virtual treatment goes
C. What trouble dentists encounter D. How a virtual model aids dentists

My wife was away for a few days and I hated the thought of leaving my new dog Honey alone. “Come on, Honey. Let’s go.” She jumped into the car and settled down in the passenger seat. I got behind the wheel and started the car.
We live in a remote area up in the hills, surrounded by many tall trees. You have to drive up the mountain slowly to get to our driveway, which is barely wide enough for one car.
I turned around my car and backed up slowly, just then, a flash of afternoon sunlight blinded me. I put my hand up to protect my eyes. I felt a sudden sharp movement as the left back wheel of the car slipped in the soft soil, and it rolled. I hadn’t put on my seat belt yet and I fell downwards inside the car and the car hit the ground several times as it turned over down the valley, Tree branches broke with great sharp noise. The car rolled faster, four, five, six, … , until it came to a complete stop. We landed upside down and I got stuck completely in the car. I looked over to find Honey. She was still in the passenger seat and fortunately, she was okay.
“Sorry, girl,” I took a deep breath. I tried to see if I could remove myself from behind the wheel. I felt a burning pain in my chest and something was wrong with my left leg. I cried out from the pain. I grabbed my cellphone and dialed 911. Just as I had feared, I couldn’t get a signal at the bottom of the valley.
I figured we were at least 50 feet down. Robin, my closest neighbor, had his own driveway, living a mile uphill from me. There was no reason he or anyone else would drive to my house. And even if someone did, they wouldn’t see the damaged car here.
Painfully, I managed to reach over and pick Honey up. I gently gave her a pat. “Go home, baby.” She jumped to the ground and raced up the side of the valley.

D The number of passengers that pass through Paris’ airports will decrease.
【答案】4. A 5. A 6. B 7. C

C. listen to others carefully D. take advantage of others
11. To learn how to manage money, the first thing to do is _________.
A. save money for financial investment B. Estimate one’s income and expenses
C. set aside money for fun activities D. open a personal bank account
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B

13. Which was the first step in creating 3D simulations?
A. Predicting treatment effect. B. Designing a computer model.
C. Drawing the shape of a mouth. D. Obtaining the details of teeth.
14. What is Professor Erleben’s attitude towards digital twins?
A. Doubtful. B. Curious. C. Favorable. D. Dismissive.

第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
What is culture? Culture is too complex to define in simple terms. ____16____ One is that culture is a total pattern of behaviour that is consistent in its components. Another fundamental is that culture is learned behaviour. The third is that culture is behaviour that is shared by a group of people.
To understand the culture of a particular country or region, one could examine its components, among which are material culture, language, and social organization. Material culture includes the tools and symbols in a society, not including those physical things found in nature, unless they have undergone some change or have been given meaning by people. ____17____ The way we consume and what we consume are heavily influenced by material culture.
____18____ Linked with all other aspects of culture, it reflects the nature and values of that culture. Industrialized societies have a rich vocabulary for commercial and industrial activities, while less industrialized societies may have richer vocabularies for matters important to their societies. The Eskimos in Alaska have many words to describe snow whereas English has only one general term.
Social organization differs somewhat from society to society. The primary kind of community association is based on blood ties. ____19____ It provides mutual protection, psychological support and a kind of economic insurance or social security for its members. The term “brothers” in Zaire includes those whom we call cousins and uncles.
Cultural analysis serves a variety of purposes. Understanding the various dimensions and their inter-relatedness helps promote cross-cultural awareness. ____20____
A. Language is the most obvious difference between cultures.
B. Some scholars even suggest that it is useless to try.
C. The values represented within a culture can also change with the passing of time.
D. However, there are certain agreed-on fundamentals that can be easily identified.
E. In many developing countries, the extended family fulfils several social and economic roles.
F. For example, a mouse running on a street is not part of a culture, but the Mickey Mouse is.
G. It leads on to the promotion of goodwill, social and economic planning and harmony between social groupings or societies.
【答案】16. D 17. F 18. A 19. E 20. G

【导语】这是一篇说明文。本文阐述了构成文化的三个方面。
【16题详解】
根据后文“One is that culture is a total pattern of behaviour that is consistent in its components. Another fundamental is that culture is learned behaviour. The third is that culture is behaviour that is shared by a group of people.(一是文化是一种行为的整体模式,其组成部分是一致的。另一个基本原则是,文化是后天习得的行为。第三,文化是一群人共同的行为)”可知,这三种基本原则正是对D项“However, there are certain agreed-on fundamentals that can be easily identified.(然而,在一些容易确定的基本原则上存在某些共识)”中“there are certain agreed-on fundamentals”的详细说明。故选D。
【17题详解】
前文“Material culture includes the tools and symbols in a society, not including those physical things found in nature, unless they have undergone some change or have been given meaning by people.(物质文化包括社会中的工具和符号,不包括自然界中的物质,除非它们经历了一些变化或被人们赋予了意义)”在讲解物质文化包括的内容,F项“For example, a mouse running on a street is not part of a culture, but the Mickey Mouse is.(例如,街上的老鼠不是文化的一部分,但米老鼠却是)”是对物质文化的举例。故选F。
【18题详解】
根据第二段的第一句“To understand the culture of a particular country or region, one could examine its components, among which are material culture, language, and social organization.(要了解一个特定国家或地区的文化,可以考察其组成部分,其中包括物质文化、语言和社会组织)”可知,其后的内容是按照物质文化、语言和社会组织三方面进行阐述的,设空处前一段已对物质文化做了解释,按照文章逻辑此段内容应为语言,A项“Language is the most obvious difference between cultures.(语言是不同文化之间最明显的差异)”从整体上概述了语言特征,且从后文中出现的“vocabulary”和“words”也可看出,本段在讲述语言。故选A。.
【19题详解】
后文“It provides mutual protection, psychological support and a kind of economic insurance or social security for its members.(它为其成员提供相互保护、心理支持和经济保险或社会保障)”中的“mutual protection, psychological support and a kind of economic insurance or social security for its members”是对E项“In many developing countries, the extended family fulfils several social and economic roles.(在许多发展中国家,大家庭承担着多种社会和经济角色)”中“several social and economic roles”的列举。故选E。
【20题详解】
根据前文“Understanding the various dimensions and their inter-relatedness helps promote cross-cultural awareness.(了解各方面及其相互关系有助于提高跨文化意识)”可知,了解文化的构成是有好处的,G项“It leads on to the promotion of goodwill, social and economic planning and harmony between social groupings or societies.(它促进善意、社会和经济规划以及社会团体或社会之间的和谐)”中的it指代“了解文化构成”,承接前文,继续说这样可以带来的好处。故选G。

The drill started at 3 pm when we were taking lessons. Hearing the fire alarm, all of us listened to the teacher giving directions and lined up to go downstairs to the playground where we were supposed to meet. With great discipline and cooperation, we performed the drill efficiently.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】I sat there for hours. The pain in my chest and leg was unbearable. I closed my eyes, trying to ignore the pain and conserve my energy. Time seemed to stand still as I waited, hoping for a miracle. Just then, I heard a familiar bark. It was Honey! She had returned, but where was she? I craned my neck to see her standing at the top of the valley, barking loudly. She was trying to get someone’s attention. My heart soared with hope. Maybe she could lead someone to me.
Bang! The noise woke me up; I could recognize it was my neighbor, Robin! “Help!” I screamed. “I’m here! Down in the valley!” Robin peered over the edge and his eyes widened in horror at the sight of my overturned car. “Don’t worry, I’ll get help!” he yelled before rushing back to his house. Robin had called the emergency services and they were finally able to locate me thanks to Honey’s persistent barking. As the paramedics carefully extracted me from the wreckage, I clung to Honey, tears streaming down my face. I knew I had her to thank for my rescue. She had saved my life.
