See the advantage of what you dislike. C Scientists found that people who have fewer friends in real life are happier than those who have plenty of friends. Researchers from the University of Leeds, UK, studied data from two online surveys of nearly 1,500 people. Those who took part in the survey gave details (细节) about their ages, social interactions (社交活动), and how satisfied they were with their social lives. The researchers found that those who had a small number of close friends generally were happier than those who had a large number of superficial (表面的) friends. “Loneliness has less to do with the number of friends you have, and more to do with how you feel about your friends,” said Wandi Bruine, one of the researchers. Bruine found that older people had smaller social circles than young people, but the people in these circles were closer to them. Younger people, on the other hand, had bigger circles that were made up of “peripheral (次要的) others”—people who are not true friends, but just people they know. These so-called friends didn’t affect younger people’s happiness. The results of the study showed that the stereotypes (偏见) society had about old people being sad and lonely might not be right. “The research shows that older people’s smaller social circles didn’t have a bad effect on social satisfaction and happiness. In fact, older people had a better feeling of happiness than younger people,” said Brine. Based on these results, the study believes that people should pay more attention to the ties with close friends instead of increasing the number of friends. 42. According to the study, people may be happier when they ________. A. have a lot of followers on social media B. are satisfied with their work and lives C. make friends with people who are older D. have a small circle of friends 43. The underlined word “affect” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________. A. matter B. hurt C. influence D. discover 44. What can we know from Paragraphs 4 and 5? A. Older people have closer friends than young people B. Young people don’t need to make peripheral friends. C. Older people’s happiness has nothing to do with their friends. D Both old and young people find it hard to make friends. 45. The passage mainly talks about ________. A. different types of friends B. changes in people’s happiness levels C. the relationship between happiness and the number of friends D. interactions between old and young people D When was it that something made you stop, take a good look and get lost in thought? For me, it was last Sunday. My friend invited me to a European art exhibition in Shanghai. To be honest, I’m not interested in art paintings at all. I know very little about European art. So, at first, I refused to go to the exhibition. But finally I became excited to see the artworks of the famous artists like Monet (莫奈) and Van Gogh (梵高). The exhibition included 52 artworks. It was really a different experience to see them face to face. My friend was happy to see so many different painting styles in one place. The visit made her remember the trip to Paris several years ago. She told me that art could be found in every corner of the city. Most of the visitors, I thought, had limited (有限的) knowledge about art, too. They were just busy taking pictures, and then showed everyone on WeChat that they had been there. Under the influence of my friend, who is an art lover, I began to look at the paintings carefully. One painting that moved me most was Van Gogh’s Long Grass With Butterflies. Those things such as grass, butterflies were quite common in my life. However, I had never thought they were worth attention. I had usually followed the crowd to see what was “special”. Actually, we should pay more attention to the “common” things around us. Sometimes we are supposed to have a careful look, think for a while, then we will find the beauty in our life. 46. Where was the exhibition held? A. Shanghai. B. Europe. C. Paris. D. Not mentioned. 47. The underlined word “them” in paragraph 2 refers to “________”. A. the artists B. the writer and her friend C. the visitors D. the artworks 48. What can we know from the passage? A. The writer used to show great interest in art paintings. B This exhibition included 52 artworks of different styles. C. Monet’s Long Grass With Butterfly was very special in fact. D. All the visitors enjoyed taking photos and showing them on WeChat. 49. What’s the best title of the passage? A. A Visit to Europe B. Stop, Listen and Show C. Enjoy the Artworks D. Stop, Look and Think E Anyone who has seen The Sound of Music, the Oscar-winning movie, knows the famous city of Salzburg in Austria. The musical movie was filmed in and around the city. Mozart, one of the greatest musicians, was born here, and the city is proud of him. You’ll hear Mozart’s music all over the city. And you can visit Mozart’s birthplace, learn about his childhood and even try the chocolate named for him: a Mozart ball! Don’t miss visiting the Salzburg Residenz, which was the rulers’ palace in the past. It was here that Mozart performed (表演) for the first time in his life. A visit to Salzburg in December must include time in the Christmas markets, which can be found here and there. Visit the marketplaces for a hot drink. Then enjoy the beautiful handwork for sale. Salt was so important to the city of Salzburg that the city was named for it. This “white gold” brought wealth to the rulers. You can visit the Hallein Salt Mine (矿), one of the oldest in the world. But he is ________ impatient boy and he left me alone halfway. A. the; an B. an; an C. the; a D. an; the 【答案】A 【解析】 【详解】句意:——你和谁一起去买语法书的?——我哥哥。 根据“Who did you go with to buy ... grammar book?” A。 2. ________ of them knows French, so I have to ask a fourth person for help. 根据“so I have to ask a fourth person for help”可知,前半句是否定意义,故要问第四个人,表示三者或三者以上的否定用none,故选D。 3. —Hurry up, Jason! A. washing; are B. to wash; are C. to wash; is D. washing; is 【答案】D 【解析】 【详解】句意:——快点,杰森! need doing sth“需要被做”,排除BC;第二处“thirty minutes”是一个时间整体,be动词用is。故选D。 4. Diana and Lily should ________ the cost carefully for the holiday. A. work out B. take away C. look after D. pick up 【答案】A 【解析】 【详解】句意:戴安娜和莉莉应该仔细计算假期的费用。 work out解决,计算出;take away带走;look after照顾;pick up拿起。 A。 5. —Are you looking forward to the coming party? —Of course. Tom is always full of hope ________he met many difficulties in his life. 根据“Tom is always full of hope” 和“he met many difficulties in his life.” B。 7 - ___________ excellent work you have done! -It's very kind of you to say so. A. What an B. How C. What a D. What 【答案】D 【解析】 【详解】句意:——你做了多么出色的工作! What + (a/an) + 形容词 + 可数名词单数 + 其它! 2. (1) What a great pity you missed the lecture again! Based on these results the study believes that people should pay more attention to the ties with close friends instead of increasing the number of friends. 42.
