Your third year of middle school was probably a hard and busy time. You may have had trouble getting enough sleep. We all know that not getting enough sleep is bad for our health. But it has been found that less sleep could even cause you to have fewer friends, the Guardian reported.
The researchers did a small study. They tested 18 young people who had just had a good night’s sleep and then tested them again after a sleepless night. The participants (参与者) watched videos of people with neutral (不带感情色彩的) expressions walking toward them. When the person on the video got too “close” to them, they pushed a button (按钮) to stop the video, which recorded how close they allowed the person to get.
The results showed that the participants kept the person at a distance of 60 percent further back if they hadn’t got enough sleep. They felt that their personal space was being invaded (侵占). But when the participants got a good night’s sleep, they allowed the person to get much closer to them.
According to lead researcher Matthew Walker, the less sleep you get, the less you may want to make friends with others. In turn, other people may think you are strange and stay away from you, which can make you feel lonely and cause you to sleep even less. It becomes a vicious cycle.
Therefore, if you want to be a more sociable and popular person, sleeping well might help. “One night of good sleep makes you feel more outgoing and socially confident,” Walker told The Daily Mail.
9. What can we infer according to The Guardian?
A. Not getting enough sleep only influences our physical health.
B. People who sleep less become more outgoing.
C. Sleeping well is the key to success.
D. People who don’t sleep well have difficulty making friends.
10. According to Paragraph 3, how did the people who slept less feel when the person on the video got too “close” to them?
A. Comfortable. B. Unhappy. C. Lonely. D. Confident.

A. A cycle that makes you have fewer friends and sleep less.
B. A cycle that makes you healthier and happier.
C. A cycle that makes you get enough sleep and make more friends.
D. A cycle that makes you more sociable and popular.
12. The best title for the passage might be “_________”.
A. The importance of sleep B. The ways to get enough sleep
C. How to make friends D. Less sleep, fewer friends

Smart app
If someone needs first aid (急救), even if you call an ambulance (救护车) straight away, you may need to wait a while because there is often traffic on the roads. Some people made an app called PulsePoint which invites people trained in CPR (心肺复苏术) to use it. The app knows the users’ positions. If someone needs first aid nearby, the app will send a message asking them to help.
Magic gel
The gel (凝胶) called Vetigel is magic! It can stop someone bleeding in just 10 seconds, said the website Medical Device Network. The gel that is made from plants can stick to a wound and help seal (密封) it. It was invented more than 10 years ago but was only allowed to be used on animals. Now in some countries, it has been allowed to be used on humans, too. The person was only 17 years old when he invented it!
Flying aid
If people get injured or need help in hard-to-reach areas, drones (无人机) can be of great use. Because they can fly, drones can often offer help faster than people. And they can also make helping people safer for savers working in dangerous conditions. The drones can have a camera that can watch people’s health. They can also bring useful things like blankets or a life jacket to save someone from drowning (溺水).
The examples above show us that technology plays an important role in saving lives. We hope that more lives will be saved because of the amazing developments in technology.

It stands for inner (内在) beauty and humble display (谦逊表现) under hard conditions. Painting plum blossoms was popular in the Northern Song Dynasty.
Grown in deep mountain valleys (山谷), the orchid is one of the top ten well-known flowers in China. With the smell refreshing people’s minds, and the elegant figures (优雅的外形) swinging slightly in the wind, orchids stand for elegance in Chinese people’s eyes.
The bamboo is thin with the inner empty. It stands for tolerance (耐力) and open-mindedness. It was admired by many ancient poets and painters. Su Shi once wrote down “Rather eat without meat than live without bamboo” in his poem to show his deep love for bamboo.
Planted as early as three thousand years ago, the chrysanthemum is a traditional flower loved by Chinese people. When nearly all the flowers fall, the chrysanthemum blooms in the cold autumn air and foretells (预示) the coming of winter. It stands for the virtue to withstand (经得起) all difficulties.

In ancient China, people called a man of great virtue (美德) a gentleman. In the world of flowers, plum blossoms (梅花), orchids (兰花), bamboo and chrysanthemums (菊) are known as “the Four Gentlemen” in China because these plants’ natural characters have something in common with human virtues.
The plum blossom tree is famous for blossoming (开花) in the dead of winter. Its fine smell fills the air at one of the coldest times of a year, making it difficult to go unnoticed.
