Steph Clemence dreamed of going to college. But life always seemed to throw barriers (障碍) in the way. Her mother remarried several times. By the time she was in high school, Steph had lived in 25 places. Her stepfather died in an accident, leaving her mother to support three daughters on a small income. Paying for college became out of the question.
One afternoon, Dorothy Clark, her English teacher, handed out a paper sheet titled “Mrs. Clark’s Book List”, saying, “Some of you might not go on to higher education, but you can continue to learn.” She created a list of 153 books, covering science, history, literature, etc. It would, she believed, form the equivalent (等同) of two years in college.
So Steph began in 1970, starting at the top to read every book in the order they appeared. Each of those books interested her to learn more. Unlike many people who open a book in bed before it’s time to sleep, Steph prefers to read while sitting in a chair with a cup of coffee by her side. She doesn’t race through a book, as she wants to enjoy the experience. Now Steph is 70 and she never did get to college. But she has only four books left to read from the list.
In Madame Curie, the author writes, “Each of us must work for his own improvement, and at the same time share a general responsibility for all human beings, helping those who we think we can be most useful to.” Mrs. Clark felt it was her particular duty to help young students. And Steph wishes she could thank Mrs. Clark and share with her how reading has changed her life. “It was never just a list from some teacher in school. It’s always been Mrs. Clark’s Book List,” says Steph.
4. Why couldn’t Steph go to college?
A. Her mother remarried. B. Her family moved often.
C. Her stepfather passed away. D. Her family fell into poverty.
5. What was the purpose of Mrs. Clark’s book list?
A. To prepare the students for college. B. To serve as a reading task for the students.
C. To share her favorite books with the students. D. To encourage the students to continue learning.
6. How does Steph feel about “Mrs. Clark’s Book List”?
A. Moving. B. Stressful. C. Instructive. D. Interesting.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

The latest in cat research shows that the lovely animal seems to well understand both the laws of physics and the ins and outs of cause and effect (因果) .
According to a new study, cats seem to be able to predict where their hiding prey (猎物) is, using both their ears and an inborn understanding of how the physical world works.
In a recent experiment, Japanese researchers studied 30 cats reacting to a container that a team member shook. Some containers rattled (发出响声) ; others did not. When the container was turned over, sometimes an object fell out and sometimes it didn’t.
It turns out that the cats were very smart about what would happen when a container was turned over. When an object did not drop out of the bottom of a ratting container, they looked at it for a longer time than they did.
“Cats use a cause-and-effect understanding of noise or sounds to predict the appearance of the hiding objects,” lead researcher Saho Takagi says. The researchers conclude that cats have developed their ability to reason where prey is, using their hearing.
Scientists have explored this idea with our lovely babies. Like cats, babies appear to act much the same way—look longer at things that are interesting or unusual than things they think normal.
When babies’ expectations are not met in experiments like the ones made with the cats, they react much like their animal friends. Babies clearly expect their world to obey (遵从) the laws of physics and cause and effect as early as two months of age.
Does the study mean that cats will soon understand the ins and outs of cause and effect? Maybe. Okay, so cats may not be the next study object at America’s most important research universities. But by proving cats’ common sense, the researchers have shown that the divide between cats and humans may not be that great after all.
8. What can be learned from the new study?
A. Cats have a natural ability to find the animals they hunt.
B. Cats can be trained to understand the physical world.
C. Objects will drop out when the containers turn over.
D. They are able to tell which way their prey runs away.
9. What may explain the cats’ reaction to the rattling containers?
A. Their unusual sense of hearing. B. Their unusual sense of direction.
C. Their understanding of cause and effect. D. Their understanding of how the laws work.
10. In what way do babies behave like cats?
A. They think of the world as normal. B. They fix their attention on something strange.
C. They prefer to do what they are interested in. D. They are serious about everything.
11. What does the passage suggest about cats?
A. They depend on their ears to hunt.
B. They are as clever as humans when hunting.
C. They will help physics professors perform research work.
D. They interact with the physical world much like humans.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. D

It’s 8: 00 a. m, and you’re ready to start your workday. First, you’ll write an article, and then you’ll review some ad copy (广告文案). After lunch, you’ll head out to take some photos for your blog, and when you get back, you’ll do some serious writing. Yes, life as a freelancer (自由职业者) is good. With so much to keep you busy, you never get bored, and you don’t have a boss telling you what to do all day. But is it the right job for you?
Freelancers are self-starters who make money by working on different short-term jobs instead of by having a full-time job with one boss. And the more skills you have, the more chances you get to work in different fields.
Freelancing isn’t all fun and games, though. Not having a full-time job means you don’t get advantages like health care or paid vacation time. On the other hand, as a freelancer, you decide when and where to work. Want to finish a project on a sunny beach? Freelancing gives you that choice.
If you’re serious about becoming a freelancer, there are some things to know. For example, those starting out will probably find it hard to get jobs as it takes time to build up your skills. Also, being a freelancer means being responsible: you need to keep your skills updated and manage your time and money wisely. Sometimes you’ll have many jobs, and other times you’ll struggle to find work.
For a growing number of people, however, the freedom that freelancing offers is worth the risks that it comes with. Since technology lets us do almost anything from anywhere, why choose to be bossed around in an office? When you become a freelancer, you can continuously develop your skills and let them work for you.
12. How does the author begin the text?
A. By introducing a new job. B. By listing examples.
C. By describing a freelancer’s day. D. By comparing different jobs.
13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The reasons to work as a freelancer.
B. The advantages of being a freelancer.
C. Strengths and weaknesses of freelancing.
D Differences between freelancing and full- time jobs.
14. What difficulty may a freelancer face according to the text?
A. Losing touch with close friends. B. Being unable to get a job at first.
C. Dealing with strict bosses. D. Finding it hard to manage time and money.
15. What’s the writer’s attitude towards freelancing?
A. Doubtful. B. Disappointed. C. Uninterested. D. Supportive.

句意:大桥将大大改善两边投资环境,为沿线人民增收致富开辟一条便捷之路。根据句子结构,句子有“improve”和“open up”两个并列谓语,故应用表并列的连词and连接。故填and。
【44题详解】
句意:2019年该项目启动时,工程师们被要求在三年的期限内完成。根据下文“they finished the project in time with the help of robots”提示,工程师们被要求在三年的期限内完成。结合“When the work started in 2019”可知,句子应用一般过去时的被动语态,主语为“engineers”,故be动词应用were,动词give应用过去分词形式。故填were given。
although/though位于句首首字母应大写。故填Although/Though。

47. 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Charles Rose lived in the country with his father, who taught him to read and write. Mr. Rose told his son that, when his morning lessons were over, he could go out and play for one hour as he pleased. However, he warned Charles that he was not allowed to go boating on the nearby river.
On the river bank stood the hut (茅舍) of a poor fisherman who lived by selling fish. He and his wife both worked very hard only to support themselves. They were greatly troubled for fear that their only son, Joe; should never learn to read and write. They could not teach him themselves and they were too poor to send him to school.
One day, to look for his missing dog, Charles visited the hut. He found the little boy sitting by the table on which he was making marks with a piece of chalk. Charles asked him whether he was drawing pictures.
“No, I am trying to write,” said little Joe, “but I know only two words. If I could only learn to read and write, I should be the happiest boy in the world.”
“Then I will make you happy,” said Charles. “I am only a little boy, but I can teach you that. My father gives me an hour every day for myself. Now if you will try to learn, you shall soon know how to read and write.”
Both Joe and his mother were ready to fall on their knees to thank Charles. It was what they wished above all things.
The next day when the hour came, Charles put his book in his pocket and went to teach Joe. Joe learned very fast and Charles soon began to teach him how to write.
Some time after, a neighbor called on Mr. Rose, and said, “Charles does not always relax himself by playing outside. I often see him go to the house of the fisherman: I fear he goes out in their boat.”

【答案】A possible version:
The moment the neighbor left, Mr. Rose went in search of his son. Feeling anger and worry, he rushed to the river. Failing to catch sight of the boat and Charles, he grew uneasy. Then he went to the hut. When he looked through the open window, a pleasant sight met his eyes. At the table, Charles was teaching little Joe. It was then that Mr. Rose knew that he mistook his son. Surprised but delighted, he walked away silently. The next day, he took Charles to town and bought Joe books, pens, ink and writing paper. Hardly had Charles come home when he ran to give them to Joe. With the materials, the boys found the study easier and gradually made huge progress with their tireless efforts, which made them the happiest boys in the world.

C. Her stepfather passed away. D. Her family fell into poverty.
5. What was the purpose of Mrs. Clark’s book list?

A. Moving. B. Stressful. C. Instructive. D. Interesting.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A Good reading habit. B. An influential reading list.
C. An honourable English teacher. D. A wonderful university experience.

D. Differences between freelancing and full- time jobs.
D. Supportive.
