Tech businessman Jared Isaacman, who made a fortune in tech and fighter jets, bought an entire flight and took three “everyday” people with him to space. He aimed to use the private trip to raise $200 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, half coming from his own pocket.
His crew included a St. Jude worker with direct ties to the activity, representing the activity’s pillar (核心) of Hope, a professor, and another person, representing the pillar of Generosity, chosen as part of a $200 million St. Jude fundraising program. All were invited to join in donating to reach the ambitious overall campaign goal in support of St. Jude’s current multi-billion dollar expansion to speed up research advances and save more children worldwide. Anyone donating to St. Jude would be entered into a random drawing for the “Generosity” seat.
Isaacman has been “really interested in space” since he was in kindergarten. He dropped out of high school when he was 16, got a GED certificate and started a business in his parents’ basement that became the beginning of Shift4 Payments, a credit card processing company. He set a speed record flying around the world in 2009 while raising money for the Make-A-Wish program, and later established Draken International, the world’s largest private fleet (舰队) of fighter jets.
Now he has realized his childhood dream-boarding a spaceship, launched in Florida and orbiting the Earth for three days in the history-making event. He called it an “epic (史诗般的) adventure”. “I truly want us to live in a world 50 or 100 years from now where people are jumping their rockets,” Isaacman said. “And if we’re going to live in that world, we’d better deal with childhood cancer successfully along the way.”
4. Why did Isaacman raise funds for St. Jude?
A. To expand a fundraising programme. B. To perform an act of great generosity.
C. To make his childhood dream come true. D. To encourage St. Jude’s life-saving work.
5. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3?
A. The commercial skills of Isaacman. B. The growth experience of Isaacman.
C. The reason for Isaacman’s good deeds. D. The beginning of Isaacman’s business.
6. What can be learned about the “epic adventure”?
A. It was a multi-day journey. B. It will be common in the future.
C. It involved three civilians in total. D. It is a symbol of hope for a better life.
7. What message is conveyed in Isaacman’s story?
A. No sweet without sweat. B. Many hands make light work.
C. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. D. A penny saved is a penny earned.
D 5. B 6. A 7. C

根据文章第三段“Isaacman has been “really interested in space” since he was in kindergarten.

C
“Is the glass half empty or half full?” This old English saying has long been used to tell a pessimist from an optimist. For most young people today, the answer is usually “half full”, because we have been taught that a positive attitude towards life is one of the primary keys to success.
However, is this necessarily a good thing? Recent studies indicate that it all depends. There is such a thing as too much positivity. It happens when someone remains in a happy and positive state and ignores any bad and negative emotions across all situations. But as a matter of fact, it is normal for us to experience any emotions. The death of a pet or loved one, a low score on a test, or a mountain of new homework should lead to emotions such as sadness, frustration and anger. If we hide these emotions just because we want to look optimistic in front of our friends and family, they can build up inside of us and end up erupting in unexpected ways. There is new evidence to suggest that many of these overly positive people are at a risk of developing drug or alcohol addictions as well as other psychological problems.
Aside from the personal emotional impacts, this attitude can also have a negative effect on the people around you. Imagine having had a bad day, and wanting to talk about it with your friend. However, instead of listening to your problems and sympathizing with you, they simply told you to “be positive” and give you the impression that your problems are being completely ignored. Just take everything as it comes and express how you really feel. This makes you human, and your true friends will always stick by you.
So my simple advice to you is to do what gives you the best “attitude” in life, whatever for you that might be. Regardless of whether a glass is half-empty or half-full, it nonetheless still has space to fill.
8. Why does the writer mention the glass at the beginning of the text?
A. To give some evidence. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To present an argument. D. To explain his ideas.
9. What is the writer’s attitude to the person who remains positive across all situations?
A. Negative. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
10 What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The cause of overly positivity.
B. The prevention of overly positivity.
C. The bad effect of overly positivity on others.
D. The bad impacts of overly positivity on personal emotion.
根据第一段““Is the glass half empty or half full?” This old English saying has long been used to tell a pessimist from an optimist. For most young people today, the answer is usually “half full”, because we have been taught that a positive attitude towards life is one of the primary keys to success.(“杯子是半空还是半满的?”这句古老的英语谚语一直被用来区分悲观主义者和乐观主义者。对于今天的大多数年轻人来说,答案通常是“半满”,因为我们一直被教导积极的生活态度是成功的主要关键之一)”可知,作者在第一段提到那杯水是为了引出话题。故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“But as a matter of fact, it is normal for us to experience any emotions. The death of a pet or loved one, a low score on a test, or a mountain of new homework should lead to emotions such as sadness, frustration and anger. If we hide these emotions just because we want to look optimistic in front of our friends and family, they can build up inside of us and end up erupting in unexpected ways. There is new evidence to suggest that many of these overly positive people are at a risk of developing drug or alcohol addictions as well as other psychological problems.(但事实上,我们经历任何情绪都是正常的。宠物或爱人去世,考试成绩不佳,或者堆积如山的新作业,这些都应该导致悲伤、沮丧和愤怒等情绪。如果我们仅仅因为想在朋友和家人面前显得乐观而隐藏这些情绪,它们就会在我们内心积聚,最终以意想不到的方式爆发。有新的证据表明,许多过于乐观的人有吸毒或酗酒成瘾的风险,也有其他心理问题)”以及第三段“Aside from the personal emotional impacts, this attitude can also have a negative effect on the people around you. Imagine having had a bad day, and wanting to talk about it with your friend. However, instead of listening to your problems and sympathizing with you, they simply told you to “be positive” and give you the impression that your problems are being completely ignored.(除了对个人情感的影响,这种态度也会对你周围的人产生负面影响。想象一下,有一天过得很糟糕,你想和你的朋友谈谈。然而,他们不是倾听你的问题,同情你,而是简单地告诉你要“积极”,给你的印象是你的问题完全被忽视了)”可知,作者在这两段分别阐述了过度积极对自己和身边的人的消极影响。可知,作者对于在任何情况下都保持积极状态的人持不赞同的态度。故选A。
根据第三段“Aside from the personal emotional impacts, this attitude can also have a negative effect on the people around you.(除了对个人情感的影响,这种态度也会对你周围的人产生负面影响。”
Everybody gets angry, but out-of-control anger isn’t good for you or those around you. So here are five simple strategies to help you learn how to manage your anger:
● Relax. Breathe deeply from your stomach. ____11____ Repeat it to yourself and visualize a relaxing time and experience.
● Change the way you think. When you’re angry, your thinking can get exaggerated (夸大的). ____12____ For instance, instead of telling yourself, “Oh, it’s terrible! Everything’s ruined,” tell yourself, “It’s understandable that I’m upset about it, but it’s not the end of the world.”
● ____13____ Statements like “This never works.” or “You’re always forgetting things.” will make you feel your anger is justified (情有可原的) and there’s no way to solve the problem. They might upset people who might be willing to work with you to find a solution.
● Have better communication. Angry people tend to jump to conclusions. If you are in a heated discussion, slow down. ____14____ And take your time before answering. Instead of saying the first thing that comes into your head, think carefully about what you want to say.
● Use humor. Psychologists say that highly angry people tend to think “things ought to go my way!” “Silly humor” can help you get a more balanced perspective. So, when you feel that anger comes the next time, picture yourself as a king or queen, walking around, admired by everybody, and getting your own way in every situation. The more detail you can get into your imaginary scenes, the more likely it is to put a smile on your face. ____15____
A. Be careful with words like “never” or “always”.
B Listen carefully to what the other person is saying.
C. Try replacing these thoughts with more reasonable ones.
D. Avoid using these strategies when you’re in a tense situation.
E. Then slowly repeat a calm word or phrase such as “take it easy”.
F. Try changing the topics so your talks won’t turn into arguments.
G. That will help you realize that the things you’re angry about are really not very important.
E 12. C 13. A 14. B 15. G
E选项“Then slowly repeat a calm word or phrase such as “take it easy”.(然后慢慢地重复一个平静的单词或短语,比如“放轻松”。)”中的take it easy与标题相对应,故选E。
根据下文的“ For instance, instead of telling yourself, “Oh, it’s terrible! Everything’s ruined,” tell yourself, “It’s understandable that I’m upset about it, but it’s not the end of the world.”(例如,不要告诉自己:“哦,这太糟糕了!一切都毁了,”告诉自己,“我对此感到沮丧是可以理解的,但这不是世界末日。”)”可知,此处强调的是要避免自己有一些消极的想法。故C选项“Try replacing these thoughts with more reasonable ones.(试着用更合理的想法取代这些想法。)”
根据后文的“Statements like “This never works.” or “You’re always forgetting things.” will make you feel your anger is justified and there’s no way to solve the problem.(像这样的陈述“这从来都没用”。或者“你总是忘事。”会让你觉得你的愤怒是有道理的,而且没有办法解决问题。)”可知,本段作者要建议人们谨慎使用带有never或always的话语。故选A。
同时根据空前的“If you are in a heated discussion, slow down. (如果你正在进行一场激烈的讨论,那就放慢速度。)”可知,此处强调的是作者建议人们在激烈的讨论中,不要轻易下结论,要认真倾听,良好沟通,从而避免怒气的产生。B 选项“Listen carefully to what the other person is saying.( 仔细听对方在说什么。)”
根据空前的“The more detail you can get into your imaginary scenes, the more likely it is to put a smile on your face.(你想象的场景中细节越多,你脸上就越有可能露出笑容。)” 故G选项“That will help you realize that the things you’re angry about are really not very important.(这将帮助你意识到你生气的事情其实并不重要。)”

Last Saturday, Jordon was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about seven years old. When Jordon passed them, he heard the woman yell, “How stupid you are! You are good at nothing. ”Jordon stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
Jordon was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Mary in middle school. He was often told that he was good at nothing. But one day it all changed. One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Mary asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading the book. A few days later, Jordon handed in his story. But the next day to his surprise, the comment (评价) “well done” from Mrs Mary came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When Jordon read that, he almost burst into tears. That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Mary the next morning. And again he was praised.
Jordon became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Mary to read them and correct them for him. Mrs Mary always corrected them for him and gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, he was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published and became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Mary's encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid. She said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at them, Jordon felt relieved, hoping he could make some difference to the boy.

9 What is the writer’s attitude to the person who remains positive across all situations?
A. Negative. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
10. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The cause of overly positivity.
B. The prevention of overly positivity.
C. The bad effect of overly positivity on others.
D. The bad impacts of overly positivity on personal emotion.
When you’re angry, your thinking can get exaggerated (夸大). ____12____ For instance, instead of telling yourself, “Oh, it’s terrible! Everything’s ruined,” tell yourself, “It’s understandable that I’m upset about it, but it’s not the end of the world.”
● ____13____ Statements like “This never works.” or “You’re always forgetting things.” will make you feel your anger is justified (情有可原) and there’s no way to solve the problem.
B. Listen carefully to what the other person is saying.
