Lonely Planet has published its yearly list of top places to go. Whether you’re looking for adventure, culture, or value, there’s something for every type of traveler. Let’s explore the. top picks for travel destinations in 2024.(你在为下一个旅游目的地寻找灵感吗?《孤独星球》日前公布了年度最佳旅游目的地榜单。 B It’s been nearly seven years since a group of volunteers broke ground at What Cheer Flower Farm in Providence, Rhode Island, with a simple goal: get flowers into the hands of anyone in need of a pick-me-up. Best of all, each one of the tens of thousands of bouquets that What Cheer grows and delivers are completely free of charge. “We want to blanket the state with flowers and create happiness and joy,” says Erin Achenbach, What Cheer’s farmer and head florist. What Cheer regularly delivers joy to people at local hospitals, food banks, senior centers, recovery centers and more-including AIDS Care Ocean State, which provides support to those affected by HIV. “Seeing the smiles on people’s faces who weren’t expecting it — who just came in to have a meeting with their case manager or take advantage of one of our programs — to just see this glow come off their faces is great,” says Stephen Hogan Jr. from AIDS Care Ocean State. Located in Providence’s industrial Olneyville neighborhood, What Cheer’s flower beds lie on 2.7 acres that once housed a knife factory. And it’s safe to say that the What Cheer crew is deserving of some flowers of their own: In May, the nonprofit was awarded a record-high$500,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency for its continued revival of a land once abandoned because of industrial pollution. “Not only do we give this space back to the neighborhood by bringing life to space that’ s quite literally dead,” says Achenbach, “but we’re an eco-landing spot with the ability to help local insect and bird populations, and that’ll only make people’s lives better.” What cheer, indeed! “What’s good about a flower is that it doesn’t need anything else,” she adds. “Your only job when someone gives you flowers is to enjoy them.” 24. What was the original purpose of What Cheer? A. To donate money to those in need. B. To present people with flowers for free. C. To protect the surrounding environment, D. To develop new flowers and distribute them. 25. Why could What Cheer obtain a high grant? A It ranked as the local largest flower bed. B. It helped patients recover from illnesses. C. It delivered remarkable joy to local people. D. It was transformed into an eco-friendly area. 26. What can be inferred from Achenbach? A. The success of What Cheer can’t be copied. B. What Cheer improves the well-being of locals, C. What Cheer attempts to return the land to locals. D. Enjoying flowers should be advocated every day. 27. Which of the following does the experience of What Cheer convey? A. Still water runs deep. B. Think twice before acting. C. God help those who help themselves. D. The roses in her hand; the flavor in mine. B 25. D 26. B 27. 由文章第一段“It’s been nearly seven years since a group of volunteers broke ground at What Cheer Flower Farm in Providence, Rhode Island, with a simple goal: get flowers into the hands of anyone in need of a pick-me-up. Best of all, each one of the tens of thousands of bouquets that What Cheer grows and delivers are completely free of charge. 由文章第五段中的“And it’s safe to say that the What Cheer crew is deserving of some flowers of their own: In May, the nonprofit was awarded a record-high$500,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency for its continued revival of a land once abandoned because of industrial pollution. 由文章倒数第二段““Not only do we give this space back to the neighborhood by bringing life to space that’ s quite literally dead,” says Achenbach, “but we’re an eco-landing spot with the ability to help local insect and bird populations, and that’ll only make people’s lives better.” What cheer, indeed! 通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段中“It’s been nearly seven years since a group of volunteers broke ground at What Cheer Flower Farm in Providence, Rhode Island, with a simple goal: get flowers into the hands of anyone in need of a pick-me-up. Best of all, each one of the tens of thousands of bouquets that What Cheer grows and delivers are completely free of charge. 和第二段““We want to blanket the state with flowers and create happiness and joy,” says Erin Achenbach, What Cheer’s farmer and head florist. D“The roses in her hand; the flavor in mine. D。 C I ask every student I interview for admission to my institution, Pitzer College, the same question, “What do you look forward to the most in college?” I was astonished and delighted recently when a student replied, “I look forward to the possibility of failure.” Of course, this is not how most students respond to the question when sitting before the person who can make decisions about their academic futures, but this young man took a risk. “You see, my parents have never let me fail,” he said. “When I want to take a chance at something, they remind me it’s not a safe route to take. Taking a more demanding course or trying an activity I may not succeed in, they tell me, will ruin my chances at college admission.” I wish I could tell you this is an uncommon story, but kids all over the world admit they are under great pressure to be perfect. When I was traveling in China last fall and asked a Chinese student what she did for fun, she replied: “I thought I wasn’t supposed to tell you that? I wouldn’t want you to think I am not serious about my work!” Students are usually in shock when I laugh and tell them I never expect perfection. Of course, this goes against everything they’ve been told. How could a dean (院长) of admission at one of America’s most selective institutions not want the best and the brightest? The reality is, perfection doesn’t exist, and we don’t expect to see it in a college application. In fact, admission officers tend to question students who present themselves as individuals without shortcomings. We get the most excited when we read an application that seems real. It’s so rare to hear stories of defeat. If their perspectives are of lessons learned, these applicants tend to jump to the top at highly selective colleges. We believe an error in high school should not define the rest of your life, but how you respond could shape you forever. 28. What can we learn about the student in the first two paragraphs? A. He is taught not to take risks. B. He tries to avoid any chance of failure. C. He cares little about his academic futures D. He is seldom allowed to take part in activities. 29. Why does the author mention the Chinese student in paragraph 3? A. To emphasize the importance of hard work. B. To compare students from different countries. C. To give an example of the students he favors. D. To illustrate the widespread stress on students 30. What is probably admission officers’ attitude towards a perfect application? A. Doubtful. B. Confused. C. Favorable. D. Casual. 31. What is the key to success in college according to the author? A. A desire for perfection B. The ability to learn from defeats. C. The opportunity of making mistakes. D. An experience of defeat in high school 【答案】28. A 29. D 30. A 31. 由文章第二段中“When I want to take a chance at something, they remind me it’s not a safe route to take. Taking a more demanding course or trying an activity I may not succeed in, they tell me, will ruin my chances at college admission. 故选A。 由文章第三段“I wish I could tell you this is an uncommon story, but kids all over the world admit they are under great pressure to be perfect. When I was traveling in China last fall and asked a Chinese student what she did for fun, she replied:“ I thought I wasn’t supposed to tell you that? I wouldn’t want you to think I am not serious about my work!” 由文章第四段中“The reality is, perfection doesn’t exist, and we don’t expect to see it in a college application. In fact, admission officers tend to question students who present themselves as individuals without shortcomings. 故选A。 由文章最后一段中“We believe an error in high school should not define the rest of your life, but how you respond could shape you forever. B。 D If you’ve got more than one kid, you’re showing favoritism, whether you know it or not. “Parents may favor one child over another, for a lot of reasons. The child may have an easy temperament (性情) or might behave particularly well or may look like you,” says Susan Newman, a psychologist. “But regardless of the reason, every child must be made to feel loved and special, in order to fully develop.” Newman warns that favoring one child over their siblings (兄弟姐妹) publicly can have a significantly negative effect. “The unfavored child can feel defeated, and unmotivated, as a result of working hard to get parental support, with no success,” says Yelena Gidenko, a licensed counselor. “He orshe may also suffer from depression and become angry, bitter, or jealous,” she adds Children feeling this way may act out, in an effort to get their parent’s attention, making matters worse. They may also behave inappropriately, becoming the black sheep, which they believe their parents already see. “Unfavored children may have a hard time accepting who they are, since they do not feel accepted by their parents,” adds Gidenko. Favoritism is not exactly a boon for the favored child, either. Kids who feel that they are their parent’s favorite sometimes translate that into a go pass for their behavior in future relationships. “Favored children may feel a sense of entitlement, and that rules do not apply to them,” says Gidenko. This can negatively affect the way they act in school, at work, and in their friendships. It may seem absurd, but the opposite can also occur. Favored children may experience anxiety and insecurity, resulting from their favorite child status. “Children are observant. They know when they are getting praise for things they have not earned, such as being your favorite. For this reason, they know, and fear, that these things might be taken away fromthem at any time, for any reason,” says Gidenko Newman urges parents to remember that it’s not possible to treat children equally because they are all different. What parents can, and should do is talk to their kids about how, and why, they treat them the way they do. “According to research, parents don’t talkabout this. They don’t say why one child gets more time than another. If they do, they are preserving their bond with each child,” says Newman 32. What can we learn about unfavored children? A. They want to please their parents B. They care little about their siblings. C. They tend to lack a sense of identity D. They hope to be the black sheep of the family. 33. What does the underlined word “boon” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Blessing. B. Challenge. C. Honor. D. Burden. 34. What does Newman suggest parents do in the last paragraph? A. Treat their children equally B. Explain themselves to their children C. Strengthen their bond with their children D. Remove the differences between their children 35. What is the text mainly about? A. The solutions to parental favoritism B. The consequences of parental favoritism C. An analysis of why parents play favorites D. A contrast between favored and unfavored children 【答案】32. C 33. A 34. B 35. 根据第三段““The unfavored child can feel defeated, and unmotivated, as a result of working hard to get parental support, with no success,” says Yelena Gidenko, a licensed counselor. “He orshe may also suffer from depression and become angry, bitter, or jealous,” she adds Children feeling this way may act out, in an effort to get their parent’s attention, making matters worse. They may also behave inappropriately, becoming the black sheep, which they believe their parents already see. “Unfavored children may have a hard time accepting who they are, since they do not feel accepted by their parents,” adds Gidenko.(持证心理咨询师叶莲娜·吉登科(Yelena Gidenko)说:“不受宠爱的孩子会感到挫败,没有动力,因为他们努力获得父母的支持,却没有成功。” 根据后文“Kids who feel that they are their parent’s favorite sometimes translate that into a go pass for their behavior in future relationships. “Favored children may feel a sense of entitlement, and that rules do not apply to them,” says Gidenko. This can negatively affect the way they act in school, at work, and in their friendships.(那些觉得自己是父母最爱的孩子有时会把这种感觉转化为他们在未来关系中的行为。“受宠的孩子可能会有一种权利感,觉得规则不适用于他们,”金登科说。这会对他们在学校、工作和友谊中的表现产生负面影响)”可知,本段主要讲述了偏袒对被偏爱的孩子来说,也不完全是好处,所以推知boon意为“益处”和A项意思相近。故选A项。 根据最后一段“Newman urges parents to remember that it’s not possible to treat children equally because they are all different. What parents can, and should do is talk to their kids about how, and why, they treat them the way they do. “According to research, parents don’t talkabout this. They don’t say why one child gets more time than another. If they do, they are preserving their bond with each child,” says Newman(纽曼敦促父母记住,不可能平等对待孩子,因为他们都是不同的。 根据第二段““Parents may favor one child over another, for a lot of reasons. If your friends are overweight, that too ups the likelihood that you’ll pack on pounds. ____36____ The researchers analyzed the running activity of more than a million individuals worldwide who used an exercise tracking device for five years. They used weather patterns as a way to randomly examine different parts of that global network. On average, fine days would encourage people to run more, rainy or cold days less. Since different cities have different weather patterns, this natural experiment allowed them to ask: Did a rainy day in New York affect running in San Diego? If the weather in New York caused changes in the running behavior in San Diego, it could possibly happen through peer influences of the friends.____37____ The behavior of one city’s runners could indeed affect the behavior of runners in another socially connected city. ____38____ Women tended to be influenced more by the female runners in their networks. And less active runners tended to influence more active runners to run more, but not so much the other way around.____39____“We have to start thinking about consumers and citizens as networked consumers and citizens. Since they are easily influenced by and influence their social network in very strong and dynamic ways, it will change the way a particular intervention succeeds or fails.” Sinan Aral, the leading researcher said. Or, let’s put it this way. Next time, the doctors recommend people to do more exercise.____40____ A. There were a few more findings. B. That was exactly what the researchers saw. C. More difficulties remained to be worked out. D. They will tell the same to their friends and family, too. E. The result provides some practical guidance for professionals. F. Lost in excitement, he accidentally tripped over a homeless old man seated against a wall in the cold, quickly murmuring an apology before continuing on his way. Inside the shop, Jack glanced at the shelves displaying Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and other beloved heroes. His heart raced as he reached for the Spiderman. “You’re a fan, right?” a friendly voice appeared behind him. Jack turned to see the shopkeeper, an elderly man with a warm smile. “Yes, they’re amazing!” Jack said. “They’re strong, and they help so many people. They have super power. I wish I could be a superhero too.” “You can be,” the shopkeeper encouraged. Surprised, Jack asked, “But how? I don’t have any super power.” Smiling softly, the shopkeeper bent down, placing his hands on Jack’s arms. “Why would you need them?” he replied kindly. “See that woman over there? She needs to take care of three children. However, she still actively helps the elderly in the community. And do you know Jimmy? He is a firefighter who has saved countless lives. Being a hero isn’t about super power; it’s about what’s in your heart.” Locking eyes with Jack, the shopkeeper smiled. “You don’t need super power to be a hero. It starts with your heart.” 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Hearing what the shopkeeper said, Jack was lost in thought. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With relief, Jack found the homeless old man still sitting against the wall. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Hearing what the shopkeeper said, Jack was lost in thought. The shopkeeper’s words echoed over and over again in his mind. “How can I be a superhero without super power?” he thought to himself. Suddenly, the scene of the homeless old man trembling in the cold flashed across his mind. Jack made a crucial decision that instead of buying a superhero figurine, he walked out of the shop with a large shopping bag full of stuff. Hurriedly, Jack ran back to look for the homeless old man. With relief, Jack found the homeless old man still sitting against the wall. He knelt down beside the old man, offering him a warm smile. “I’m sorry for bumping into you earlier,” Jack said sincerely. “Can I get you something to eat or drink?” The old man looked up, surprised by Jack’s kindness. With a grateful nod, he accepted Jack’s offer. Just then, Jack realized that being a hero wasn’t just about saving the world—it was about making someone’s world a little brighter. 词汇激活 行为类 ①闪过脑海:flash across one’s mind/run through one’s mind ②做出关键决定:make a crucial decision/make a key decision ③走出商店:walk out of the shop/step out of the shop 情绪类 ①很抱歉,难过:sorry/apologetic ②感激的:grateful/appreciative 【点睛】【高分句型1】Jack made a crucial decision that instead of buying a superhero figurine, he walked out of the shop with a large shopping bag full of stuff.( 运用了that引导的同位语从句) 【高分句型2】He knelt down beside the old man, offering him a warm smile. B It’s been nearly seven years since a group of volunteers broke ground at What Cheer Flower Farm in Providence, Rhode Island, with a simple goal: get flowers into the hands of anyone in need of a pick-me-up. C I ask every student I interview for admission to my institution, Pitzer College, the same question, “What do you look forward to the most in college?” I was astonished and delighted recently when a student replied, “I look forward to the possibility of failure.” Of course, this is not how most students respond to the question when sitting before the person who can make decisions about their academic futures, but this young man took a risk. D An experience of defeat in high school D If you’ve got more than one kid, you’re showing favoritism, whether you know it or not. A contrast between favored and unfavored children 第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选 项。 If your friends are happy, it turns out that you’re more likely to be happy too. They used weather patterns as a way to randomly examine different parts of that global network. On average, fine days would encourage people to run more, rainy or cold days less. Since then, he had diligently walked a neighbor’s dog and weeded his neighbors’ gardens to earn money for one figurine. Finally he had enough money for one and raced towards the corner shop.
