One of the hardest things about learning anything is figuring out how to practice. Or even what it means to practice. Repetition is often key. But you don’t want something that sucks all the joy out.
I’ve been teaching myself to draw for a few years. I had improved a lot but for a long while was going nowhere. I’d tried lots of books and courses and filled endless pages with boxes, parallel lines and figures.
But something clicked when I started sketchbooking (速描) this year. The sketchbooks led to a shift in mindset. Rather than trying to practice, I was engaging in a practice — scribbling (乱涂乱画). Whiling away the hours with the books became something in its own right rather than a means to an end.
I started carrying sketchbooks everywhere. The simple act of capturing scenes and moments in my sketchbook became an essential part of my experiences. The books also became a way for me to work through difficulties, such as when my wife had a health crisis and was in the hospital for a weekend. As we waited endlessly to find out what was happening, it was a safe space where I could just be.
I spoke to Danny Gregory, a writer who blogs and makes videos about sketchbooking, to try to figure out why I had become so taken by my new practice.
“We think about practice in drawing like practice in piano, where you have to do things like playing scales (音阶) and completing exercises,” Gregory said. “I’ve always hated that. It feels really academic. It’s not expressive.”
I have since filled two sketchbooks solely with portraits, not as studies for future work, but as individual expressions. Similarly, Gregory recounted how he filled a sketchbook with drawings of his morning tea cup, emphasizing the value of repetitive, focused practice.
My latest sketchbook will tackle the biggest challenge of all my drawings – hands. I’ve always had problems drawing hands. It’s early days, but I’m not fearing it as I did before because drawing a bunch of hands isn’t just practice anymore; actually I am quite looking forward to it now, and I know it’s the practice of practice.
4. What was the author’s main challenge in learning to draw initially?
A. Mastering portrait drawing techniques.
B. Maintaining interest in drawing over time.
C. Finding the right books and courses on drawing.
D. Making continued progress through constant practice.
5. What did sketchbooking provide the author during his wife’s health crisis?
A. A comforting outlet. B. A way to record happy life.
C. A means of communication. D. A way to document solutions.
6. How does sketchbooking differ from traditional drawing practice, according to Danny Gregory?
A. It is more academic in nature.
B. It involves studying specific techniques.
C. It’s an active engagement with personal ideas.
D. It’s an essential step for creating future paintings.
7. What is the author’s current attitude toward drawing hands?
A. Worried. B. Bored. C. Fearful. D. Enthusiastic.
C
Do you have a younger brother? Does he always get in trouble? Well, there might be some science behind that.
According to a report from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, second-borns are more likely than first-borns to behave badly, which could be why you from time to time consider your younger brother or sister sprites.
Researchers, who explored data from tens of thousands of sibling (兄弟姐妹) pairs from Denmark and
Florida, found second-borns are 20% to 40% more likely to have behavioral problems. If you’re the second-born child you may want to have a little chat with your parents. The reason why second-born siblings may be worse behaved than first-born is that parents tend to pay less attention to them.
“Second-born children tend to have less attention from the mother than their older siblings because first-born children experience their mother’s maternity leave (产假). First-borns enjoy the rewards of not only their own time with Mum following their birth, but the time Mum takes off with younger siblings, too.” the authors explain.
It’s not just about the parents, however. Speaking to NRP, co-author Joseph Doyle said, “The first-born has role models, who are adults. And the second, later-born children have role models who are slightly unreasonable 2-year-olds, you know, their older siblings. The difference of parental investments and the sibling influences probably contribute to these differences we see in the labor market and what we find in behaviors against rules, even against laws. It’s just very difficult to separate those two things because they happen at the same time”
The results, the authors argue, have an important effect on social policy.
8. What does the underlined word “sprites” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Losers. B. Troublemakers. C. Close companions. D. Parents’ pets.
9. According to the report, what influences the second-born children’s behavior?
A. Challenges of their elder siblings.
B. The amount of attention they receive from parents.
C. More family problems they are faced with.
D. Fewer chances of talking with others.
10. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Parents Prefer First-Born Kids
B. How Parents Improve Family Relationships
C. Social Policy Guides Family Education
D. Why the Second-Born Tend to be Misbehaved

B How Parents Improve Family Relationships
C. Social Policy Guides Family Education
D. Why the Second-Born Tend to be Misbehaved

【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“The reason why second-born siblings may be worse behaved than first-born is that parents tend to pay less attention to them.(第二胎的兄弟姐妹可能比第一胎表现更差的原因是父母往往不太关心他们)”可知,二胎孩子从父母那里得到的关注度影响了他们的行为。故选B项。
