As I signed my classmates’ books, I noticed their moms had written in them, too. “I couldn’t be prouder of you. Can’t wait to see how you like junior high!” “Congratulations! We love you and know you have a bright future!” I asked my mother to sign mine, too. When she handed it back to me, I was anxious to see what she had written. This is what I found on the page: When a thing is first begun, Never leave it till it’s done. Be the labor great or small. Do it well or not at all. That was it? I was frozen. It was an indication to me that, if I couldn’t be perfect, I wasn’t good enough. I held back my tears, left the page in but secretly hoped my classmates wouldn’t read it. Do it well or not at all. For years, I battled perfectionism and never felt good enough for most of my life. When my mother was in her eighties, I gave her a book to fill out so we could know more about her. It had questions at the top of each page and then blank space to respond. I secretly hoped she’d been working on it all along. Sadly, not long after, my mother passed away. When I sorted out her belongings, what I wanted more than anything was that book. What I found stopped me short. On page ten, the question was, “What’s the best advice you got from your parents?” Her response was what she had written in my autograph book. Even though I’d memorized it years ago, I read it at a slower pace now, seeing it in a new light. It was written to her by her mother, and she was passing it down to her daughter in the same way. A gift from her to me. She was giving me treasured, valuable advice when all I was thinking about were words of praise. I understand it now. 4. In paragraph 1, the author found that words from other classmates’ moms ________. A. contained reflection on life B. expressed their thankfulness C. showed pride in their children D. featured a formal writing style 5. Seeing her mom’s words on the autograph book, how did the author feel? A. Disappointed. B. Motivated. C. Hopeful. D. Anxious. 6. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 5 imply? A. The author memorized the words from her mom. B. The author was surprised to see the same words again. C. The author found it easy to see the words clearly under the light. D. The author began to have a new understanding of her mom’s words. 7. What gift did the author’s mom give her? A. A vision of a perfect world. B. Encouragement to do things well. C. Her mom’s wisdom of loving yourself. D. Her mom’s advice on living at a slow pace. C 5. A 6. D 7. 根据第一段“ I noticed their moms had written in them, too. “I couldn’t be prouder of you. Can’t wait to see how you like junior high!” “Congratulations! We love you and know you have a bright future!”(我注意到他们的妈妈也在上面写了字。“我为你感到无比骄傲。等不及想看看你的初中生活了!”“恭喜你!我们爱你,知道你有一个光明的未来!”)”可知,在第一段中,作者发现其他同学妈妈的话是以他们的孩子为傲。故选C。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据正文第三段“That was it? I was frozen. It was an indication to me that, if I couldn’t be perfect, I wasn’t good enough. I held back my tears, left the page in but secretly hoped my classmates wouldn’t read it.(就这样?我僵住了。这对我来说是一种暗示,如果我不能做到完美,我就不够好。我强忍着眼泪,留下了那一页,但心里暗暗希望同学们不要看。)”可知,看到妈妈在签名簿上写的字,作者是失望的,故选A。 【6题详解】 词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段“Even though I’d memorized it years ago, I read it at a slower pace now, seeing it in a new light.(尽管我多年前就已经记住了,但我现在读它的速度变慢了,以一种新的眼光看待它。)”和最后一段“I understand it now.(我现在明白了。)” 根据作者妈妈写的话“When a thing is first begun, Never leave it till it’s done. Be the labor great or small. Do it well or not at all.(当一件事刚开始时,不做完就不要离开。无论劳动是大是小。要么做好,要么不做。)”以及最后一段的“It was written to her by her mother, and she was passing it down to her daughter in the same way. A gift from her to me.(这封信是她母亲写给她的,她正以同样的方式传给女儿。是她送给我的礼物。)”可知,作者的妈妈写的这些话就是给作者的礼物,从这些话可知,作者的妈妈鼓励作者把事情做好,故选B。 C Solar panels — also known as “photovoltaic” panels — are used to turn sunlight into electricity. Most solar panels are placed on land in large collections called solar farms. But recently people have begun to explore putting floating solar panels on water. Because these panels float, some people call them “floatovoltaics”. The idea isn’t as unusual as it might seem. After all, any solar panel has to be waterproof, since it will be out in the rain. There are already several large floatovoltaic farms in Asia. On land, so panels are held up by special frames (框架). On the water, floatovoltaics are placed on a floating platform attached to the bottom of a lake or reservoir (水库). Floating solar panels cost about 25% more than those placed on land. The researchers behind the new study looked at 145,555 reservoirs worldwide. They used computer programs to figure out how much electricity could be produced yearly by covering 30% of these reservoirs with floating solar panels. The answer was surprisingly large — more than twice the amount of energy the United States generates in a year and 10 times as much energy as all the solar power currently being generated in the world. Floatovoltaics can also help save water by limiting evaporation (蒸发) from reservoirs. The scientists say that solar panels covering just 30% of the reservoirs’ surfaces could save as much water as 300 million people would use in a year. There are several other reasons that make floatovoltaics a good idea. Photovoltaic panels work better when they’re not extremely hot. The water helps cool the panels so that they create more energy. Floatovoltaics aren’t perfect. Covering too much of a reservoir with panels could affect the plants and animals in the water. The scientists say it will be important to study how floating panels will affect water in each reservoir. Focusing first on man-made reservoirs will avoid some of those problems. 8. What is the purpose of paragraph 2? A. To list solar panels’ unusual functions. B. To introduce the workability of floating solar panels. C. To show disadvantages of solar panels on land. D. To make a comparison between different solar panels. 9. How did researchers carry out the new study? A. By looking at reservoirs worldwide. B. By building floatovoltaic farms in the US. C. By making computer-aided estimates. D. By processing data given by specialists. 10. What do we know about floating solar panels? A. They may cause potential harm to water ecosystem. B. They will eventually replace photovoltaic panels. C. They function well in extreme hot weather. D. They are perfect except for the high cost. 11. What is the suitable title for the text? A. Floating Solar Panels — Our Final Choice B. Floating Solar Panels — Taking Us Back to Water C. Floating Solar Panels — A New Way to Cool the Planet D. Floating Solar Panels — Making Energy, Saving Water 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第二段“The idea isn’t as unusual as it might seem. After all, any solar panel has to be waterproof, since it will be out in the rain. There are already several large floatovoltaic farms in Asia. On land, so panels are held up by special frames (框架). On the water, floatovoltaics are placed on a floating platform attached to the bottom of a lake or reservoir(水库). Floating solar panels cost about 25% more than those placed on land.(这个想法并不像看起来那么不寻常。毕竟,任何太阳能电池板都必须是防水的,因为它会在雨中使用。亚洲已经有几个大型的浮动光伏电站。在陆地上,太阳能板由特殊框架支撑。在水面上,浮动光伏被放置在附着在湖底或水库底部的浮动平台上。浮动太阳能电池板的成本比放置在陆地上的太阳能电池板高出25%左右。)”可知,第2段的目的是介绍浮动太阳能电池板的可操作性。故选B。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“They used computer programs to figure out how much electricity could be produced yearly by covering 30% of these reservoirs with floating solar panels.(他们使用计算机程序计算出,如果在30%的水库上安装浮动太阳能电池板,每年可以产生多少电力。)” 根据最后一段“Covering too much of a reservoir with panels could affect the plants and animals in the water.(用面板覆盖太多的水库可能会影响水中的植物和动物。)” 故选A。 通读全文,尤其是倒数第三段“The answer was surprisingly large—more than twice the amount of energy the United States generates in a year and 10 times as much energy as all the solar power currently being generated in the world.(答案惊人地大——是美国一年发电量的两倍多,是目前世界上所有太阳能发电量的10倍。)”和倒数第二段“Floatovoltaics can also help save water by limiting evaporation (蒸发) from reservoirs.(浮动光伏还可以通过限制水库的蒸发来帮助节约用水。)” D。 D Blind imitation is self-destruction. To those who do not recognize their unique worth, imitation appears attractive; to those who know their strength, imitation is unacceptable. In the early stages of skill or character development, imitation is helpful. When I first learned to cook. I used recipes and turned out some tasty dishes. But soon I grew bored. Why follow someone else’s way of cooking when I could create my own? Imitating role models is like using training wheels on & child’s bicycle; they help you get going, but once you find your own balance, you fly faster and farther without relying on them. In daily life, imitation can hurt us if we subconsciously (下意识地) hold poor role models. If, as a child, you observed people whose lives were bad, you may have accepted their fear and pain as normal and gone on to follow what they did. If you do not make strong choices for yourself, you will get the results of the weak choices of others. In the field of entertainment, our culture glorifies celebrities. Those stars look great on screen. But when they step off screen, their personal lives may be disastrous. If you are going to follow someone, focus on their talent, not their bad character or unacceptable behaviors. Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique. Think of the movies books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched you because their creations were motivated by inspiration, not desperation. The world is changed not by those who do what has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them. Creative people have an endless resource of ideas. The problem a creator faces is running out of material; it is what to do with the material knocking at the door of imagination. Study your role models, accept the gifts they have given, and leave behind what does not serve. Then you can say, “I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors’ tragedies and declare victory, and know that they are cheering on.” 12. Imitation proves useful when you ______. A. know you are unique B. lose the balance of life C. begin to learn something new D. get tired of routine practice 13. What does the underlined word “glorifies” in paragraph 4 mean? A. complains. B. beautifies. C. dominates. D. rejects. 14. The trouble a creator faces is ______. A. the lack of strong motivation B. the absence of practical ideas C. how to search for more materials D. how to use imagination creatively 15. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage? A. To highlight the importance of creativity. B. To criticize the characters of role models. C. To compare imitation with creation. D. To explain the meaning of success. C 13. B 14. D 15. 根据第二段中“In the early stages of skill or character development, imitation is helpful.”(在技能或性格发展的早期阶段,模仿是有帮助的。)以及“Imitating role models is like using training wheels on & child’s bicycle; they help you get going, but once you find your own balance, you fly faster and farther without relying on them.”(模仿榜样就像在儿童自行车上使用辅助轮;它们帮助你前进,但一旦你找到了自己的平衡,你就可以在不依赖它们的情况下骑得更快更远。) 根据第四段第二句“Those stars look great on screen.”(那些明星在银幕上看起来很棒。) 根据倒数第二段中“Creative people have an endless resource of ideas. The problem a creator faces is running out of material; it is what to do with the material knocking at the door of imagination.”(有创造力的人有无穷无尽的想法资源。 To those who do not recognize their unique worth, imitation appears attractive; to those who know their strength, imitation is unacceptable.”(盲目模仿是自我毁灭。 以及倒数第二段中“The world is changed not by those who do what has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them. Creative people have an endless resource of ideas.”(改变世界的不是那些按照前人的做法行事的人,而是那些按照自己内心的想法行事的人。 故选A项。 Healthy See, Healthy Do Visit the grocery store on an empty stomach, and you will probably come home with a few things you did not plan to buy. But hunger is not the only cause of additional purchases. The location of store displays (摆放) also influences our shopping choices.___16___ The checkout area is a particular hotspot for junk food. Studies have found that the products most commonly found there are sugary and salty snacks.___17___ A 2012 study in the Netherlands found that hospital workers were more likely to give up junk food for healthy snacks when the latter were more readily available on canteen shelves, for example. In 2014 Norwegian and Icelandic researchers also found that replacing unhealthy foods with healthy ones in the checkout area significantly increased last-minute sales of healthier foods. ___18___ It has been working with more than 1,000 store owners to encourage them to order and promote nutritious foods. “We know that the stores are full of cues (暗示) meant to encourage consumption,” says Tamar Adjoian, a research scientist at the department, “Making healthy foods more convenient or appealing can lead to increased sales of those products.” Adjoian and her colleagues wondered if such findings would apply to their city’s crowded urban checkout areas, so they selected three Bronx supermarkets for their own study. ___19___ Then they recorded purchases over six three-hour periods in each store for two weeks. Of the more than 2,100 shoppers they observed, just 4 percent bought anything from the checkout area. Among those who did, however, customers in the healthy lines purchased nutritious foods more than twice as often as those in the standard lines.___20___ The findings were reported in September in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior. The potential influence may seem small, but Adjoian believes that changing more checkout lines would open customers’ eyes to nutritious, lower-calorie foods. Health department officials are now exploring ways to expand healthy options at checkout counters throughout New York City. A. These foods give people more energy. B. They bought unhealthy foods 40 percent less often. C. And it may make or break some healthy eating habits. D. The supermarkets began to offer nutritious, lower-calorie foods. E. These findings caught the attention of New York City Department of Health. F. They replaced candies and cookies with fruits and nuts near the checkout counter. G. And a few studies have suggested that simply swapping in healthier options can change customer behavior. C 17. G 18. E 19. F 20. 选项C中的it与上句话中的“The location”可形成指代关系,并且“make or break some healthy eating habits”与文章主题(Healthy See, Healthy Do看到的健康的,买的就是健康的)呼应。 由本段中的“a research scientist at the department”可知,前边应该出现过department,选项E中的“Department of Health”与之呼应。 选项F中的“They replaced candies and cookies with fruits and nuts near the checkout counter(他们把收银处附近的糖和饼干换成了水果和坚果)”与这个试验的目的一致。 On a freezing January evening, Ashley Austrew sat in her car in an Omaha parking lot. She was working up the ___21___ to go into a comedy improv (即兴表演) class. For 20 minutes, the 33-year-old journalist and mom of two sat with thoughts of ___22___: “I can’t do this. I’ll be the worst one.” Then she turned off the engine, took a few deep breaths, and went ___23___. For Austrew, ___24___ improv was the first small step to improve her self-esteem. She lacked confidence and didn’t have the courage to try anything ___25___. So she made a list of all the things she was afraid to ___26___ and then asked herself, “What if I didn’t let my excuses win?” Improv was her biggest ___27___. Her fear ___28___ as soon as she walked into the class. Her classmates were also ___29___, and she discovered that she was ____30____ capable of earning a few laughs and making new friends. Over the next two years, Austrew went on to deal with other what-ifs, including writing a book. “Self-esteem is like a muscle--you have to ____31____ it constantly,” she says. C Solar panels — also known as “photovoltaic” panels — are used to turn sunlight into electricity. Floatovoltaics aren’t perfect Covering too much of a reservoir with panels could affect the plants and animals in the water. Floating Solar Panels — Making Energy, Saving Water D Blind imitation is self-destruction. Think of the movies, books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. A. To highlight the importance of creativity. B. To criticize the characters of role models. C. To compare imitation with creation. D. To explain the meaning of success. Healthy See, Healthy Do Visit the grocery store on an empty stomach, and you will probably come home with a few things you did not plan to buy.
