About Songkran FestivalSongkran Festival is one of Thailand’s most important festivals, which is celebrated for their traditional new year. Visiting Thailand on Songkran Festival
●●●●●
SO MUCH FUN!
I’m from India and Holi is a similar festival in my country, but I never imagined that a whole country can break into a crazy water fight with such great excitement! Water was a bit expensive, but most people got enough water guns and that made it even more fun. You’d better buy a water proof pouch to protect your phone and wallet, or they will get wet and break down.
●●●●●
Crazy
If you are looking for a place to experience water everywhere, loud music and lots of festivities (庆祝活动) for free, head over to Songkran and walk down the street. You can go to some side streets to find quieter spaces, loads of restaurants and bars celebrating. Won’t go again, but worth seeing it.
●●●●○
Complete madness
During the festival, water is everywhere, and there are all kinds of water guns. Shop owners are throwing ice cold water. The place gets busier and I was worried about safety even though the atmosphere was good. This year, because of King’s passing, alcohol (酒精) was not served. With so many people on the streets, the government needs to think about how to help people play happily but also safely.
4.Which country does Songkran Festival come from?
A.China. B.India. C.Thailand. D.Malaysia.
5.If people want to join in the water fight during the Songkran, what do most people take?
A.Ice cold water. B.Water guns. C.Some drinks. D.Alcohol.
6.Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A.During the Songkran, there are many crowds with water guns on the streets.
B.In India, Holi is a similar festival like Songkran Festival.
C.While enjoying the crazy water fight, people needn’t care about the safety.
D.When people are throwing water during the festival, they are washing away bad things.

Passage9(23-24九年级上·浙江·期中)
Dear Joe,
Thank you for leaving a single star in your review of Pizzeria. Your review focuses on my service, but I don’t think the star is for me. The review system makes you leave at least one star, or I don’t think you would have left any at all.
You write that I gave you “the worst customer(顾客) service ever.” I’d rather have given you good service, but it was hard for me. I was new to the restaurant. I hadn’t learned everything about it.
You recall(回想起) coming up to me and asking if I could offer you a table for eight. You recall that I told you it would be a 30-minute wait. You waited 35 minutes. I believe you. Without your timekeeping, I would have no idea how long you waited. The restaurant was full. I was working as a hostess (a poor one, I take your point), a bartender(酒保) and a server. There were two other servers. Both were new hires. Neither had served in a restaurant before. May I remind you, Joe, that I was also a new hire. I have been serving in restaurants for years, but every restaurant has its own system.
After 35 minutes of waiting, you came in to check on the progress. A table for eight had just opened up, but it was given to another party of eight. They had booked a few days earlier. I hate breaking promises, Joe, but a reservation(预订) is also a promise. The table was promised twice, and I had to break a promise.
I am truly sorry. I admit(承认) that while you were waiting outside the restaurant, I didn’t think of you—not even once. It is awful to have to wait so long. I wish it could’ve been better for you.
Thanks again for your review. I want to improve, and I welcome your feedback(反馈意见).
Sarah
25.Who is Joe?
A.One of Sarah’s friends. B.A waiter in the restaurant.
C.The boss of the restaurant. D.A customer in the restaurant.
26.Why did Joe leave a star for Sarah?
A.Because Sarah liked stars. B.Because Joe was not happy about her service.
C.Because Joe disliked Sarah’s pizza. D.Because Sarah was a good waitress.
27.What does the underlined word “review” mean?
A.opinion B.test C.menu D.reply
28.For which of the following reasons did Sarah say sorry to Joe?
A.She was new to the restaurant. B.The restaurant was full.
C.She forgot Joe was waiting outside. D.The table was not big enough for eight people.

Passage18(22-23九年级上·浙江湖州·期中)
Dear Jason,
Most parents tell their children, “you can be anything you want when you grow up.” I feel the same and I say this often. But I also want you to understand that the dream itself comes from hard work, some good luck and good timing.
Jason, here are some words of wisdom as you make your way in the world, from your dad.
First, be open-minded to changing your path (even several times) along the way. In high school, I wanted to be a politician(从政者). I left my hometown and entered a college in Washington D.C. There, I discovered that I loved sports and helping others. It taught me that I’m creative, a strong leader and great at marketing. As a result, I moved on to the head of a national health organization. Becoming a dad while in that job opened my mind to starting a sports business. Now I run a successful company I started up all by myself.
Find out what you are good at and what you are interested in. Keep an open mind and change what you are doing based on what you are learning about yourself.
Next, failure is very important to your success. I won’t tell you to feel good about failure. It’s true that failure
can be heartbreaking. But I will tell you that every failure I’ve had along the way has certainly made me better. Failing the big math exam in high school and going to summer school were embarrassing(令人尴尬的). I finally passed, and I’ve never failed an exam again. I learned from that experience to ask for help. Now, I ask for help in business all the time.
I’m so glad to be role model to you as a dad and a company owner. I hope I can help you believe that you can be anything you want and you can have everything on your list.
Love,
Your dad
53.According to the father, how should Jason deal with failure?
A.He should learn from failure. B.He should avoid any failure.
C.He should feel good about failure. D.He should be sad about failure.

Passage20(22-23九年级上·浙江金华·期中)
Now, the VOA Special programme WORDS AND THEIR STORIES.
Today, we will show the word “waste”. It is something people tell us not to do. At home, parents tell us not to waste food. In the classroom, teachers tell us not to waste time. On a sports team, coaches tell us not to waste energy (力气).
Waste often happens because we use something too much or because we do not use it well.
We often use “waste” in disagreements. If we are unhappy with someone, we can say: “Don’t waste my time.” And if you are not happy with something you did, you can say, “Well, that was a complete waste of time.”
We also find it in some useful expressions. The first one is “Haste makes waste.” “Haste” means doing something very quickly. “Haste makes waste” means if you move or do something in a hurry, you could make mistakes. And then it takes more time to correct mistakes. So, if you see your friends doing homework in a hurry, you can suggest, “Be careful with your work, you might make mistakes and then our teacher will make you do it again. Haste makes waste, you know.”
The other common expression is: “Waste Not, Want Not.” This means that if you never waste anything, especially food or money, you will always have it when you need it the most.
Now let’s hope learning about “waste” in this Words and Their Stories was not a “complete waste of your time.”
I’m Anna Matteo!
Listen again next week for another Words and Their Stories programme from VOA.

Dear Donna,
Help! I’m a 15-year-old high school student in New York. In eight months, I’m going to take an entrance exam. To prepare for it, I’m studying six hours a day. I want to do well, but I’m really stressed (焦虑不安的) these days. I can’t sleep. What can I do?
Yours,
Mary
Dear Mary,
Many students around the world have the same problem as you. Here is some advice to help you deal with the stress. Good luck!
◆Make a study plan for yourself, but don’t study too much in one day. You can remember more by studying one hour each day for six days, than six hours in one day. Also, don’t study late at night.
◆Have a rest for 15 to 20 minutes every two hours. Go outside and walk. Taking exercise is a great way to reduce stress.
◆Don’t eat a lot of sugar or drink a lot of coffee. Eat foods rich in Vitamin B (维生素B) (for example, eggs, milk, green vegetables and rice). These foods give you energy and help you think more clearly.
◆A study partner (同伴) can help you practise for the test. When you are worried about the exam, you can talk to your partner. This can reduce stress, too.
Yours,
Donna

In our social Q’s column (专栏), the teenager Harper Ediger and the adult Philip Galances give their best advice to kids looking for help.
Now it’s your turn: Do you have a question about an uncomfortable social situation at school, at home, on social media or among friends? Email it to us at Kidsqs@njpost.com. Harper and Philip may answer it in a future issue (期). Please include your age and hometown. Come on, we know you have one.

I know she doesn’t mean it personally, but she always complains that she doesn’t have a home, which makes me feel as if I’m intruding into my own room. Should I tell her how I feel or let it go?
At my school, fourth graders need to learn different dances, then dress up for a fancy party where we ask partners to dance with us. This makes me nervous, and I’m not looking forward to it. How should I handle this situation?

Passage27(22-23九年级上·浙江杭州·期中)
Taking good notes can help you do well in all your schoolwork. But unluckily, most schools don’t teach you how to take notes. So here is some advice.
Write down key facts. If your teacher writes notes on the board, you can copy them down. If not, write down the most important points. Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may say lots of dates and facts in class, but only write the key ones on the board. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may say a certain date or a piece of information several times.
Don’t overdo it. You’ll go crazy if you try to write down every word in class. And if you focus too much on getting your notes right, you may miss important points. Some students lean better by listening, writing down some key points, and then going over the notes after class.
Ask. Don’t be afraid to ask the teacher to say something again. If the teacher is going too fast, your classmates will also be willing to hear the information again. If you feel shy about asking in class, see your teacher after class.
Note-taking gives your mind a chance to absorb (吸收) what you need to learn. It can not only help you do better in a test, but also help you form good study habits.
83.How many suggestions about note—taking are given in the passage?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.

86.What is the passage mainly about?

27.What does the underlined word “review” mean?
A.opinion B.test C.menu D.reply

Love,
Your dad

In our social Q’s column (专栏), the teenager Harper Ediger and the adult Philip Galances give their best advice to kids looking for help.
