European Cities That Are Making Streets Become Car Free
The quality of life in cities would be so much better if they were car-free. So the
following European cities are trying to reduce the number of cars in the streets.
· Copenhagen, Denmark
Beginning in the 196os, Denmark's capital pioneered walker-only zones and the city now
has over 32l kilometers of bike routes. Over half of the people in Copenhagen ride bicycles to
work. Denmark is building a superhighway of 28 routes for bikes that'll connect the city to its
surrounding suburban areas. The first of the routes opened in 2014.
· Hamburg, Germany
The German city is planning on making walking and biking the main forms of transportation by
reducing the number of cars allowed in specific areas of the city by 2o35. The project calls for
a green network of places people can go to without cars, which will cover 4o% of Hamburg.
The green network will include parks, playgrounds and sports fields.
· Milan, Italy
In this Italian city, for every day that drivers leave their cars parked at home during
working hours, they'll receive a 1. 5 Euro ticket reward good for the use of public
transportation. The city has buses, subways, trams(有轨电车) to choose from, so it pays to
leave the driving to them.
· Paris,France
In 2017, the French capital announced it would ban diesel(柴油) cars by 2o24. Cars that
run on gas are expected to be removed by 203o. There's already an older car ban from the city
center for working hours on weekdays. "If you live in Paris and get rid of your car, you can
claim benefits of around $ 7oo to buy a bike," according to Fast Company.

Ekaterina paed pictures at wildlife reserves and rescue centers, in high schols and in
visitorsrs Shepid pice or the Buning Man festval, choosing to paint primates'
(灵长类动物的) eyes since they are closely related to humans. This piece gave her the
confidence to start a world tour, as she had never painted a picture that size before.
Ekaterina went on a tour to different countries worldwide, painting pictures of various
endangered species. She hoped that her paintings would encourage viewers to look deeply into
their own lifestyles and question how they might harm animals. She said,"We all can make a
difference if we look at ourselves as a small piece of a greater whole."
With each picture, she made the audience look directly into the animals' eyes. She painted
pictures to encourage people to show more compassion and care to animals and raise awareness
of the importance of efforts in wildlife conservation. "As I believe, we connect through our
eyes, which are windows into our soul, and I believe that when we get to meet someone's
soul, we don't have a heart to hurt them," she said.

Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Statistically speaking,
it is the largest waterfall in the world. Victoria Falls is located on the border between Zambia
and Zimbabwe. The falls are also close to the border of Botswana. The Zambezi River, which
originates in northern Zambia, serves as the falls' water source.
There are basically two seasons for the Victoria Falls area. The rainy season runs from
late November to early April with the remaining months accounting for the dry season. One
would imagine that the rainy season with more water would make the falls more spectacular
(壮观的), however, the additional water and subsequent mist(水汽) in the air makes it nearly
impossible to see the base of the falls.

Having a conversation on Mars isdiffclt. That's mostly because theRed Planet's thin
atmosphere of mostly carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) doesn't carry sound well.In fact, someone
speaking next to you on Mars would sound as quiet as if they were talking 60 meters away.
"It's pretty different from Earth," says Baptiste Chide, a planetary scientist at Los
Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. "It's better to use microphones and'a headset
even at a close distance."
Chide's team analyzed some of the first sound recordings on Mars picked up by a microphone on
NASA's Perseverance rover, a space robot. What Perseverance recorded weren't the sounds of events
on Mars. They were noises made when the rover fired a laser(激光) at small rocks nearby.
The team found that within the range of human hearing, high-pitched(声调高的) sounds
travel at about 250 meters per second. Low-pitched sounds travel slower-about 240 meters
per second. That is to say, if a song is played from a speaker on Mars, higher sounds will
reach a listener before lower sounds.
