Last year in early summer, I was walking up the hill to my house when I saw two birds, each about 60 centimetres tall, standing on the path. They didn’t seem to notice me until I was right in front of them and then they at once moved quickly into the bushes.
I was quite excited by the idea of two birds making a nest in my front yard, although I didn’t really expect them to because wild birds don’t usually make a nest so close. A few weeks later, the birds appeared again. I found them crouching beside a tree off to the side of the path. As I moved nearer to them, I imagined that they would run away like they did last time. But instead they stuck out their heads and made a threatening (威胁的) croaking sound. It seemed to warn me not to go any nearer.
I didn’t know why they were croaking at me until a short time later I made an amazing discovery: they had two small baby birds.
As I moved quietly towards the birds, careful not to make any sudden movements, they started their croaking again. They straightened their necks forward so they seemed longer and more threatening. The mother carefully crouched down over the chicks, and hid her babies well in her feathers.
I was watching them with respect when I suddenly tripped and fell to the ground. The birds took this as a threat and the father raced towards me, spreading his wings to protect the mother and the chicks while making himself appear larger.
I was sorry to have surprised them and left quickly. I was amazed by their fearless actions.
Their parental natural ability made them so brave. It is hard not to respect nature.
34.Why did the two birds not run away like they did last time?
A.Because they were not afraid of me any more.
B.Because they needed to protect their baby birds.
C.Because it seemed that I wasn’t noticed this time.
D.Because I was careful enough not to frighten them.
35.What are Paragraphs 4 and 5 mainly about?

B.The birds seemed to be more threatening.

B.Only the mother bird tried to protect the baby birds.
C.Not only the birds but also I had a heart full of love.
D.I knew why the birds croaked at me in the beginning.
37.In which way is this passage organized?
A.Time order. B.Space order. C.General to specific. D.Specific to general.

Human activity is changing the surface and temperature of our planet. But new research shows it is also changing the sound of oceans and seas. Scientists say these changes affect (影响)many sea animals—from very small fish to huge whales.
Sound travels very far underwater. For fish, sound is a better way to sense their environment than light. They use sounds to communicate with each other. Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and avoid their hunters. Sounds help fish and other sea animals survive(生存).
However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these animals to hear each other. The noise comes from shipping traffic, underwater oil and gas exploration, and other noisy human activity. For many sea animals, their efforts to communicate are being masked (被掩盖)by sounds that humans have introduced. Experts explain the term masking, which happens when one or more noises in the water block sound important to an ocean animal’s life.
The Red Sea is one of the world’s most important shipping passages. It is full of large ships traveling to Asia, Europe, and Africa. Some fish and other animals now avoid the noisiest areas. Also, the overall number of sea animals has gone down by about half since 1970. In some parts of the ocean, scientists now record fewer animals singing and calling than in the past.
Experts say that effects of noise on sea animals are not well understood. However, some studies suggest that noise may cause hearing loss. The stress from human noise might also affect the immune(免疫)system-an animal’s natural defense system. Many sea animals are showing higher levels of stress because of noise.
When people think of threats(威胁)facing the ocean, we often think of climate change, plastics, and overfishing. But noise pollution is another necessary thing we need to be monitoring. When it comes to something humans can do for the ocean, we need to think about how to make it quieter. Sound pollution may be easier to deal with than other ocean threats. You can reduce or turn off sound immediately. It’s not like plastics or climate change, which are much harder to undo.
38.According to the passage, sounds can help sea animals in many ways except ________.
A.blocking the sunshine outside B.searching for something to eat
C.getting away from their hunters D.communicating with each other
39.What can you know from the passage?
A.Noise does more harm to sea animals than humans realize.
B.Plastic pollution is the biggest threat facing oceans and seas.
C.Fish sense their environment better through light than sound.
D.The Red Sea is one of the most popular fishing areas in the world.
40.The underlined words “to undo” in Paragraph 6 probably mean “________”.
A.to involve the effort B.to promise the result C.to cancel the effects D.to forget the influences
41.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Why Are Ocean Animals So Noisy? B.Helpful Ways to Save Ocean Animals.
C.Humans Are Making Oceans Too Noisy. D.Which Threat to Oceans Is the Biggest?
D
New discoveries at the Sanxingdui Ruins site in Guanghan, Sichuan Province drew the world’s attention. On March 20, Chinese archacologists (考古学家) announced that they had found more than 500 cultural relics (文物) in six new pits at the site, dating back about 3,000 years.
So far, archaeologists have unearthed (发掘) different important cultural relics from four of the pits, including pieces of gold masks, gold foil (箔),bronze masks, bronze trees and large numbers of ivories. In 1986, a large number of cultural relics were discovered in No.1 and No.2 pits.
The Sanxingdui Ruins, which were first discovered in 1929, are believed to be the remains of the ancient Shu Kingdom. The kingdom was a center of civilization (文明) along the upper reaches of Yangtze River.
The discovery of Sanxingdui raised an important question about the origins (起源) of Chinese civilization. The ancient Shu civilization that built Sanxingdui is believed to be one of the earliest examples of Chinese civilization. The site, along with the Liangzhu and Shijiahe sites along the Yangtze River, shows that the birthplace of Chinese civilization might not have been only along the Yellow River Basin (黄河流域) in north China.
The newly-discovered cultural relics are similar to those found in 1986, as they also include bronze trees and bronze masks. They further support the idea that the pits were used for sacrificial (献祭) purposes.
New kinds of cultural relics have also been dug up. For example, experts found two square zun (尊), a kind of ancient bronze jar that was used for holding water or wine. They also found cong (琮) —a jade item commonly found at the 5,000-year-old Liangzhu Archaeological Ruins in Zhejiang Province.
“These artifacts show that the Sanxingdui Ruins site had a close connection with Central China, but it also marks an original ancient civilization in Sichuan with strong creativity,” said Chen Xiandan, a member of the project who also took part in the 1986 excavation (发掘).
42.What do we know about the cultural relics found at the Sanxingdui Ruins site recently?
A.Most of the cultural relics were made of gold.
B.They were found in the same pit.
C.They were created about 3,000 years ago.
D.They were used for celebrations.
43.In 1986, what cultural relics were discovered in No.1 and No.2 pits?
A.Bronze trees and bronze masks. B.Two square zun, a kind of ancient bronze jar.
C.Gold foil and cong-a jade artifact. D.Gold masks and gold trees.
44.The new discovery of Sanxingdui shows that Chinese civilization________.
A.started earlier than was believed before.
B.might have several different origins.
C.was centered along the Yangtze River.
D.developed from the ancient Shu civilization.
45.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.Ancient civilization in Sichuan. B.Ancient cultural relics at Sanxingdui.
C.New discoveries at Sanxingdui. D.Introduction to Sanxingdui Ruins site.

I reached into my wallet to get enough cash to cover the rest. 1 saw two bills(钞票) inside. The first would cover the rest of the check. The second would cover the check and give the waitress a nice tip. I reached down to pick the first one.
At that moment, my mind flashed back to 30 years ago. I was working as a busboy (餐厅勤杂工) in a restaurant much like the one we were in. It was long hours of hard work for low pay. I remembered seeing the waitresses worrying about how they were going to pay the rent. I remembered the pain in their eyes and the sadness in their faces at the end of the day.
I blinked (眨眼睛) and was back in the present again, with my fingers touching the smaller bill in my wallet. I smiled, pushed it back down and picked out the larger bill. I folded it around the gift card and covered both of them with the check. As we all got up from the table, I handed them to the hardworking waitress. “You keep the change,” I said with a smile and a happy heart.
We are all one family in this world. Do your best to be kind. Do your best to be a good person and replace suffering with joy.

Mickey, Cinderella, Elsa… Who are y 61 childhood friends? Now, Disney, the company that c 62 these movie characters, is celebrating its 100th birthday!
Except for these classic roles, Disney has been trying to stay fresh b 63 creating new characters. One good example is the “Duffy and Friends” series. The Duffy series has seven characters, i 64 ShellieMay, StellaLou, and LinaBell. These characters all have come out in the last 20 years, mostly in Asia. Many young people like them. Duffy is a cute bear that came out in Tokyo Disneyland in 2004. StellaLou, a purple rabbit, arrived in 2017. And in 2021 came a top star — LinaBell, a pink fox. She first s 65 up in Shanghai Disneyland and soon swept the Chinese Internet with her cute daily-life videos.
D 66 from other Disney characters that we have come to love through their stories in movies, Duffy and his friends are more like pop idols. Each has their own p 67 , even though they don’t have their own movies or TV shows. StellaLou dreams of becoming a dancer, w 68 LinaBell is a curious explorer. And the characters’ fans really love them. Calling t 69 “mommy fans”, they call LinaBell “daughter” and StellaLou “babe”. This shows the strong connection between Disney and its fans.
