German Chancellor(总理) Angela Merkel may look like an ordinary woman. She dresses commonly and doesn’t show many feelings. But don’t let appearance fool you.
As the first woman chancellor in Germany’s history, Merkel has topped Forbes magazine’s list of “The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women” six times. She has even been compared to Margaret Thatcher and many people call her “Iron Lady”.
Merkel was born in Hamburg, West Germany, on July 17, 1954. As a small child, she quickly learned to speak but it took longer for her to walk. “I was a stupid person when it came to moving,” Merkel said. “A normal person could do something naturally, but I had to think about it in my mind and practice.” As a teenager, she was the top student in high school. In 1973, Merkel went to the University of Leipzig, where she studied Physics.
At 32, she got her doctor’s degree in Physics. She stepped into politics(政坛) in 1989. In her first big political job as Minister for the Environment in 1994, her scientific background and strong will proved very useful. In 2005 she became Germany’s Chancellor. Through her political career, Merkel’s persistence(坚持) and patience helped her a lot. “She’s bright and open-minded,” said Hubert Markl, a German biologist. “She is the person who wants to know exactly what is going on, and how never giving up will influence our society and future.”

It was a week before I saw Captain Nemo again. Every morning, I noticed fresh air coming into the rooms and I knew that the Nautilus had surfaced. I would go out and see the sunrise.
Then I received a note from Captain Nemo. He invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. Ned was excited because he thought there he could find a chance to escape. When I saw Captain Nemo the next day, I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island. “I thought you preferred the sea to being on land.”
“I do,” replied the Captain, “But these forests are under the sea.” During breakfast, he explained that he had made diving suits that used special air tanks. These tanks would allow us to stay under the water for ten hours. He had also made lights that worked in electric batteries. When Ned realized that we were not going onto land for our hunting trip, he decided not to come at all.
Conseil and I put on our diving suits, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men. We stepped into a room and closed the door. The room was filled with water, and another door opened. We must go through it, and we were on the sea floor. It was an amazing experience.
We were about ten metres under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colourful. We walked over the fine sand and enjoyed the colours of the shells, fish and seaweed. Conseil and I followed Captain Nemo and his man as they crossed a large grassy area. We were going deeper and deeper. Two hours later, we were a hundred metres under the water. The suits worked very well, and it was easy to walk and breathe.
At one hundred metres deep, we could still see quite well, and Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The “trees” in the forest were giant seaweed, and all their branches were vertical(垂直的). We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest. Small shrub(灌木) grew under the large seaweed trees. Some of them had flowers.
We walked through this forest for about an hour, and then we lay down to rest. I was not hungry, but I was very sleepy. We all slept, and when we woke up, we walked further.

A man was walking through the woods with his axe (斧头) when a small tree called to him. It said, “Hello friend. Can you cut down those bigger trees? They’re blocking (遮挡) the sun. It is so crowded (拥挤的) here that I have no space to spread my roots (根). I can’t feel the wind.”
The little tree held out its tiny leaves. It looked so sad. It continued, “If those trees were gone, I’d be able to grow. A year from now, I’d be the biggest tree here. But for now, I’m just a small tree.”
The man thought for a while and agreed. He walked over to the bigger trees and started cutting them down. Soon, he cleared lots of space around the small tree. Now it would be able to feel the sun and wind. It would grow bigger and become the biggest tree in that area.
But something else happened instead. The sun’s heat came first. The small tree wasn’t used to so much sunshine. It started to burn. Strong wind and heavy rain came—without the bigger trees to protect it, the small tree was hit by the storm. Soon, the tree was nearly dead.
“You’ve been quite foolish (愚蠢的),” said a snake that saw what had happened. “You brought this on yourself. If you’d left the bigger trees alone, the sun and storm wouldn’t have hurt you so badly. They protected you. If you had just waited longer, you would have grown to be just as big as them. You will be strong. But now, you’re dying.”
30.Why did the small tree ask the man to cut down the bigger trees around it?
A.Because there was something wrong with the bigger trees.
B.Because the man wanted to cut down the small tree.
C.Because the small tree thought the bigger trees stopped it from growing.
D.Because the bigger trees brought the small tree much wind and rain.
31.From Paragraph 3, we can infer that the small tree was very ________.
A.happy B.worried C.strange D.stressed
32.What happened to the small tree at last?
A.It became strong. B.It was dying.
C.It felt sorry. D.It grew bigger.
33.What does the story mainly want to tell us from what the snake said?
A.Bigger trees should protect the small ones.
B.Great trees are good for shade (阴凉).
C.The small tree is very foolish.
D.The small tree can’t wait to grow up.
I felt very ill. At first, I could not move. The knife was in my skin and in the mast (桅杆). I pulled and pulled. My skin tore and I was free. I went down to the cabin (客舱). I washed the wound (伤口) and put a piece of clean cloth around it.
There was nothing I could do on the ship. I could not sail (启航) her alone. I climbed into the water. It was not deep. I was able to walk slowly toward the shore.
The mutineers (叛变者) were on the other side of the island. I was not far from the stockade (木寨) where my friends were.
“If I can get to them,” I thought, “I can tell them about the ship. They will be able to come here and sail her away.”
My wound hurt, but these thoughts helped me to keep going.
When I got to the stockade, I saw a large fire burning inside. This surprised me. Captain Smollett did not like large fires. There was no noise coming from the stockade. No one was on watch. This also surprised me.
Then a voice cried, “Gold! Gold! Gold! Gold!”
I knew it was Silver’s parrot. Before I could turn and run, Silver came to the door, a pistol (手枪) in his hand. “Who’s there?” he shouted.
In the light of the fire, he could see me.
“Jim Hawkins!” he said. “I’ve always liked you, boy, so I’ll not hurt you. I’ll let you choose. You can join me, or you can go to your friends—if they’ll have you back. They are not pleased with you.”
“Where are my friends?” I asked. “What have you done with them?”
“Nothing,” Silver said. “Yesterday morning, the doctor came to us with a white flag. ‘Let’s talk,’ he said. ‘The ship’s gone. None of us can leave the island.’ He was right. We looked out to sea. We could not see the Hispaniola. ‘How many are you?’ I asked. ‘Four,’ he said. ‘And one of us is wounded. The boy’s gone. We don’t know where he is. And that’s all I’m going to tell you.’”
“You think you’re very clever, Silver,” I said. “You think I am a fool and afraid of you. I’m not. You have lost the ship, most of your crew (船员), and the treasure. And why? Because I heard you talking to Dick. I told the doctor about you. I cut the rope. I killed your men on the ship. Kill me if you must, but tell the doctor that I was not afraid of you.”
“Kill the boy,” shouted one of the men.
“Keep quiet. I’m the captain (船长) here,” Silver shouted at him. For several minutes, Silver and his men shouted at one another. I thought they might kill him, but at last they were quiet.
“Jim is a good and brave boy,” Silver said. “I’ll kill any man who touches him.” He turned to me. “You’ve got the ship safe somewhere, haven’t you boy?” he said. “There’s trouble coming, Jim. But you can trust me.”
I was sure I could not trust Silver. And it was difficult to know what he wanted from me. But I was safer with him than with the other mutineers. They wanted me dead.
I looked toward the fire. One of the men had a book. He was doing something to it. “What are they doing?” I asked Silver.
“We’ll soon find out,” he said. And he was right.
The five men left the fire and came toward us. One of them put a piece of paper into Silver’s hand, then moved back.
Silver looked at it. “The black spot (点)!” he said. “So that’s what it’s about. You don’t want me as your captain. Is that right?”
“Everything has gone wrong,” the man said. “You’ve made too many mistakes. And we shall have to pay for them. We want a different captain.”
Silver began to laugh. “You do, do you?” he said. “Then look at this.”
He took out a yellow piece of paper and threw it to the ground. The men moved to look at it. I saw what it was. It was the map of the treasure.
“The doctor gave me the map,” he said. “Do you want a different captain now?”

Five years back, Sally was the new kid in class. I don’t know what it was, but something unique about her drew me to her. She was the most friendly person I knew. We started as classmates, but after a few months, we were like best friends. So, I never expected her to hurt me in such a big way.

“That will be fine,” said the boy.
Mrs. Jones heated some cooked food she had in the fridge and set the table. She didn’t ask the boy anything about where he lived, or his parents, or anything else that would embarrass him. Characters: Fern Mrs.Arable Mr.Arable
“Where’s Papa going with that ax(斧头)?” said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.
“Out to the pig house,” replied Mrs.Arable.“Some pigs were born last night.”
“I don’t see why he needs an ax,” continued Fern, who was only eight.
“Well,” said her mother, “one of the pigs is very small and weak, and it is useless. So your father has decided to do away with it.”
“Do away with it?” shrieked Fern. “You mean kill it? Just because it’s smaller than the others?”
“Don’t well, Fern!” she said. “Your father is right. The pig would die anyway.”
Fern pushed a chair out of the way and ran outdoors. “Please don’t kill it!” she cried. “It’s unfair.”
Mr. Arable stopped walking.
“Fern,” he said gently, “you will have to learn to control yourself.”
“Control myself?” yelled Fern. “________, and you talk about controlling myself.” Tears ran down her cheeks and she tried to pull the ax out of her father’s hand.
“Fern,” said Mr. Arable, “I know more about raising a litter of pigs than you do. A weakling makes trouble.”
“But it’s unfair,” cried Fern. “The pig couldn’t help being born small, could it? If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?”
Mr. Arable smiled.“Certainly not,” he said, looking down at his daughter with love.“But this is different. A little girl is one thing, a little weak pig is another.”
“I see no difference,” replied Fern, “This is the most terrible case of injustice I have ever heard of.”
A strange look came over John Arable’s face. He seemed almost ready to cry himself.
“All right,” he said. “You go back to the house and I will bring the weak pig when I come in. I’ll let you start it on a bottle, like a baby. Then you’ll see what trouble a pig can be.”
When Mr. Arable returned to the house half an hour later, he carried a carton under his arm.
“Put it on her chair!” said Mrs. Arable.
As Fern came closer to her chair, the carton shook a little, and there was some noise. Fern looked at her father. Then she lifted the lid of the carton. There, inside, looking up at her, was the newborn pig.

The race began in the summer of 1910.
On June 1, in London, a black ship
On the Terra Nova, Captain (船长) Robert Falcon Scott smiled quietly. It was a very important day for him. He was a strong man, in the blue clothes of a captain. He was forty-one years old, but he had a young face.
One man on the ship, Titus Oates, smiled at Scott.
“What an exciting day, Captain!” he said. “Look at those people! I feel like an important man!”
Scott laughed. “You are important, Titus, he said.” And you’re going to be famous too. We all are. Do you see this flag (旗帜), and smiled at Oates. “That flag is coming with us”, he said.
“In the Antarctic (南极地区), I’m going to carry it under my clothes. We’re going to be the first men at the South Pole (南极), and that flag is going to be first too!”
Five days later, on June 6, a man opened the door of his wooden house in Norway. He was a tall man with a long face. He waited outside the house for a moment. Everything was very quiet. He could see no houses, trees, and water. It was nearly dark. The sky was black over the mountains.
The man smiled, and walked quickly away from the house down to the sea. In the water, a big wooden ship waited for him. The man got onto the ship
The ship’s name was Fram, and the man was Roald Amundsen. The Fram was the most beautiful ship on earth. Amundsen thought. His friends were the best skiers (滑雪者) on earth too.
One of them, Olav Bjaland, smiled at him.

“Yes.” Amundsen said. His friends could not see his face in the dark. “Fram is going to the Arctic (北极地区)”.
Everyone on the Fram was ready to go to the North Pole, to the Arctic. Amundsen wanted to go there too. But first he wanted to go south. His friends didn’t know that.

The ship was strong and the weather was fine, so we had a good journey. Only Arrow caused trouble. He was drunk most of the time. Then one night, he fell into the sea and disappeared. Captain Smollett made Job Anderson, a sailor (水手), in Arrow’s place.
Another sailor was Israel Hands. He was a friend of Long John Silver. All the crew (船员) liked Long John Silver because he had many stories to tell. And he was always kind to me. He often said, “Come and sit with me, Jim.”
One night when we were very near the island, I went to the barrel (桶) to get an apple. I was tired and after eating an apple, I sat down in the barrel. There I fell asleep. It was not long before a voice awoke me. A man was sitting near the barrel. It was Long John Silver. He was talking to a young sailor called Dick. He told Dick about the life of a pirate (海盗).
As he spoke, I realized that Long John Silver was as bad as Black Dog and Blind Pew and other pirates who sailed with him.
Then Israel Hands came up.
“When are we going to take over the ship?” he wanted to know.
“As soon as we get to the island,” Silver said. “Then we’ll make the square (乡绅) and the doctor take us to the treasure.”
“What will you do with them afterward?” Dick asked.
“Kill them,” Silver answered. Then he said to the boy, “Dick, get me an apple out of the barrel.”
I didn’t know what to do. I knew that if the boy saw me, Silver or Israel Hands would kill me.
Then Hands stopped the boy. “You don’t want an apple, John,” he said. “You need rum (朗姆酒). We all need rum.”
He sent Dick off to get the rum. He soon came back, and the three of them began to drink.

Dr. Dolittle lived in a small town called Puddleby. Everyone in the town knew him. The dog and children ran after him. He lived in a small house, but he had a large garden. He kept many animals in his garden. His favorite animals were Dab-Dab, a duck; Jip, a dog; Gub-Gub, a baby pig and Polynesia, a parrot. He also kept some fish, rabbits, cats, a squirrel, a cow and a baby cow, a horse, chickens and so on.
Dr. Dolittle didn’t have many patients. Most people didn’t like all of his animals, so when they were ill, they went to a doctor in another town.
“But you don’t have any money,” his sister told him. “You need patients.”
“I have a patient,” Dr. Dolittle answered, “The cat’s-meat-man. He’s the man who sells me meat for the cat.”
“He doesn’t pay you enough to live on,” his sister told him.
“Then I’ll sell everything I have,” he said.
And he did. He sold most of his furniture. He also sold most of his clothes. Then he had enough money to buy food for himself and his animals.
One day, the cat’s-meat-man said to him, “Why don’t you stop being a doctor for people and become a doctor for animals instead? I’m sure that you know a lot about animals—more than most vets. You wrote a wonderful book about cats. I’d send all the people with sick dogs or cats to you.”
When the cat’s-meat-man left, Polynesia, the parrot, flew onto the table. “He’s right, Doctor,” Polynesia said. “You should become an animal doctor.”
“There are a lot of vets,” Dr, Dolittle said.
“Perhaps there are a lot of vets. But you’d be the best vet of all. I’m not the only animal that can talk. All the animals can talk. Each kind of animal has its own language. I’ll teach you mine if you like.”
“Yes, please,” Dr. Dolittle said. He opened a drawer and took out a notebook and pencil. “Will you teach me the parrot’s ABCs first?” he asked.
Polynesia agreed to teach Dr. Dolittle parrot language. Later that day, Jip came into the room. Polynesia said, “He’s talking to you, Doctor.”
“I don’t think he is,” Dr. Dolittle said. “He’s just catching (挠) himself.”
“Dogs talk with their ears, their noses, and their tails,” Polynesia told him. “They don’t always make a noise. Do you see how he is moving his nose now?”
“Yes.”
“He is telling us that it has stopped raining, and he wants to ask you a question.”
Every day, Dr. Dolittle learned the languages of the animals. When people found out he was now an animal doctor, they brought their sick pets to him.
One day, a horse said to him, “You’re a much better animal doctor than the vet. You knew I couldn’t see well, and you made glasses for me.”
The horse was very pleased. He could see very well. He told all his friends how clever Dr. Dolittle was, and they told all their friends. Soon, many animals came to see him. He had a different door for each animal, and he wrote the name of each kind of animal above each door. HORSES, COWS, …
Before long, every animal that lived in or near the town became the doctor’s patient. He was very happy, and he liked his life very much.

【答案】30.C 31.A 32.B 33.B
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了一棵小树想要更多的阳光和空间而请求路人砍掉遮挡阳光的大树,但结果却事与愿违,小树因为失去了大树的庇护而面临死亡的故事。
30.细节理解题。根据“Can you cut down those bigger trees? They’re blocking the sun. It is so crowded here that I have no space to spread my roots. I can’t feel the wind.”可知,小树认为大树阻挡它的阳光和风,挤兑它的生长空间,所以才让那个男人把周围的大树砍了。故选C。
31.推理判断题。根据“Soon, he cleared lots of space around the small tree. Now it would be able to feel the sun and wind.”可知,小树有了更大的生长空间,还能感受到阳光和风,由此可知它很快乐。故选A。
32.细节理解题。根据“But now, you’re dying.”可知,最后小树快要死了。故选B。
33.推理判断题。根据“If you’d left the bigger trees alone, the sun and storm wouldn’t have hurt you so badly. They protected you.”可知,蛇说如果大树没被砍倒的话,它们能保护小树不受太阳和暴风雨的伤害,由此可知通过蛇的话,我们知道故事想要告诉我们大树底下好乘凉。故选B。

C.Brave friends D.A map of the treasure
【答案】34.D 35.C 36.B 37.A
【导语】本文是《金银岛》的一个片段。
34.词义猜测题。根据“The knife was in my skin and in the mast (桅杆). I pulled and pulled. My skin tore and I was free.”
根据“There was nothing I could do on the ship. I could not sail (启航) her alone. I climbed into the water. It was not deep. I was able to walk slowly toward the shore.”和“‘If I can get to them,’ I thought, ‘I can tell them about the ship. They will be able to come here and sail her away.’”
故选A。

But the boy was careful to sit on the far side of the room, away from the bag, where he thought she could easily see him out of the corner of her eye if she wanted to. He did not trust the woman to trust him. And he did not trust the woman not to trust him. And he didn’t want anyone to doubt him now.
“Do you need somebody to go to the store,” asked the boy, maybe to get some milk or something?”
“Don’t believe I do,” said the woman, “unless you just want sweet milk yourself. I’m going to make chocolate milk.”
“That will be fine,” said the boy.
Mrs. Jones heated some cooked food she had in the fridge and set the table. She didn’t ask the boy anything about where he lived, or his parents, or anything else that would embarrass him. Instead, as they ate, she told him about her job in a hotel beauty shop that stayed open late, what the work was like, and how all kinds of women came in and out. Then she cut him half of her cake. “Eat some more, son” she said.
When they finished eating, Mrs. Jones got up and said, “Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes.

【导语】本文选自英文小说《金银岛》,主要讲述了吉姆在船上偶然听到Long John Silver到达金银岛后要杀死乡绅和医生,接管这艘船,成为海盗。
42.细节理解题。根据第一段“ Only Arrow caused trouble...Then one night, he fell into the sea and disappeared. Captain Smollett made Job Anderson, a sailor (水手), in Arrow’s place.”可知,Arrow消失后,船长让水手Anderson代替了他的位置,故选C。
43.细节理解题。根据第四段“As he spoke, I realized that Long John Silver was as bad as Black Dog and Blind Pew and other pirates who sailed with him.”可知,在Long John Silver告诉Dick有关海盗的事情之后,吉姆认为他非常坏,故选B。
44.词句猜测题。根据下文“‘As soon as we get to the island,’ Silver said...‘Kill them,’ Silver answered.”可知,这里说的是到达金银岛后,将领路的乡绅和医生杀掉,接管这艘船,所以“take over”的意思是“接管”,故选D。
45.细节理解题。根据第一段“Only Arrow caused trouble. He was drunk most of the time.”,第三段“I was tired and after eating an apple, I sat down in the barrel. There I fell asleep.”和“It was Long John Silver. He was talking to a young sailor called Dick. He told Dick about the life of a pirate (海盗).”
