Many people think things like ghosts and death are scary. But in fact, we just had a festival celebrating these things.
Each year, on the 15th day of the seventh month in the Chinese lunar calendar, we celebrate Zhongyuan Festival or Ghost Festival. It was on Aug. 30 this year.
On this day, families light lanterns to help dead people find their way home. But at the same time, living people don’t want to stay out at night during Ghost Festival. They believe ghosts may hurt them.
In Chinese culture, death is a scary and heavy thing. People are mostly afraid of it. But in some other cultures, death is a less gloomy (阴郁的) thing.
In Russia, people remember their ancestors on the Day of Rejoicing in late April or early May, which means birth and happiness. Russians believe that people shouldn’t feel sad for the dead because death means birth in another world. On the Day of Rejoicing, Russians draw beautiful pictures on eggs and put them in front of the tombs. After that they have a picnic together. They hope for good life for both the living and the dead.
In the US, people remember the dead on Halloween, which is on Oct. ▲ People wear scary clothes. Children do fun things, like “trick or treat”.
In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is a time for the living to connect with the dead, Nov.1 for the children and Nov.2 for the adults. They tell stories about them. There are also parties at night.
So, as you see, death is a part of life. Understanding it can help us cherish our time here and live our best lives.

I live with my grandmother in a Beijing yard house. One day last year, I was surprised to see a foreigner coming out of the house next to ours. He was very tall with a pair of glasses. The first time I saw him, I was too shy to speak to him. “My English is too poor!” I thought. My grandmother told me that he had just moved into our yard. “I don’t like it!” she said. “Foreigners aren’t like us. Maybe he’ll play loud music and have parties every night! I’m sure he’s going to cause trouble.”
Several days later, I met the foreigner as I was walking home after work. “Hello!” he said (in Chinese!). “My name’s Tony. I’ve just moved into the house next to yours.” While I was wondering what to say, he continued, “There’s a nice bar down the road. Why don’t you and your family come and have dinner with me?” “Bars are bad places,” said my grandmother when I told her, but we decided to go.
The bar was not at all what I had expected. It was in a beautiful little yard house, with several large bookcases and pictures of Tibet on the walls. Several Chinese people and foreigners were sitting, drinking or reading books. I noticed that some of the foreigners were speaking Chinese in a low voice to each other! “Oh, what a great place!” my grandmother said.
The bar served special “hutong pizzas”. As we ate, Tony told us about himself—he is an English expert in environment. He always likes to be quiet. My grandmother said to me, “He really seems like a very nice young man.”

What is the best way to learn a language? Some of you might say, “Put it into practice.” We did this in our class.
Last month, our class is learning about connective words. Our teacher gave us a special lesson. Each group had to make their own food and describe the steps of making it.
As foodies we were excited when we heard the news. Our group chose to make chicken and potato sandwiches. I brought some pieces of bread and butter. My teammates brought chicken, lettuce, cheese and cooked potatoes. With all of the things, we began to make our sandwiches while describing the steps. First, we put some butter on a piece of bread. Next, we cut the chicken and potatoes into pieces. Next, we put all the pieces and cheese on the butter. Then, we put the lettuce on the cheese. Finally, we put another piece of bread on top.
In this class, we not only learned about connective words such as first, next and then, but also had fun while working together and making our sandwiches. Our teacher found a way to show us that English grammar doesn’t always have to be boring.

Besides enjoying the festivities, I also made sure to complete my homework and review my lessons to prepare for the new semester. I spent some time each day studying to ensure I was ready for the quality monitoring of our online classes from the last term. Overall, it was a productive and enjoyable winter vacation.
