But my clothes stuck to me like a heavy weight. I could hardly stay above the surface. Counsel saw this. “Shall I cut them?” he asked. With a knife he cut my clothes from top to bottom and took them off quickly while I swam for both of us. Then I did the same for Counsel, and we continued to swim near each other. But we were in serious trouble. The crew might not have noticed our disappearance. And if they had, they could not return because the rudder (舵) had broken. Counsel thought of all this, and calmly made his plans. We decided to wait for the ship as long as possible, because we had no other hope of safety. I suggested that we save our strength so that both of us would not be tired out at the same time. This was how we did it: While one of us lay on his back, quite still, with arms crossed and legs stretched out, the other would swim and push him along. We exchanged every ten minutes or so. In this way, we could swim for hours, perhaps till daylight. The crash of the ship and the whale had appeared at about eleven o’clock. We had about eight hours to swim before daylight. This seemed possible, if the sea remained calm. 4. Why did the two men help each other cut their clothes? A. Because the weather was too hot. B. Because they wanted to swim in the sea. C. Because no other people helped them to take off their clothes. D. Because their clothes prevented them from staying above the surface. 5. What kind of situation were the two men probably in? A. A party. B. A competition. C. An accident. D. A game. 6. What did the two men do to save strength? A. They both swam calmly. B. They lay on their backs instead of swimming. C. One of them pushed the other while swimming. D. They crossed their legs and stretched their arms. 7. Which of the following statements is correct? A. The story took place at night. B. Neither of the two men was good at swimming. C. The crew noticed the two men’s disappearance. D. The two men had been saved by a passing ship at eleven o’clock. D 5. C 6. C 7. 根据第一段中的 “But my clothes stuck to me like a heavy weight. I could hardly stay above the surface.(但我的衣服像重物一样粘在我身上。我几乎无法停留在水面之上。)”可知, 衣服像粘在身上,无法浮在水面上,所以必须互相剪掉衣服。故选D项。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后两段中的“But we were in serious trouble. The crew might not have noticed our disappearance.(但我们遇到了严重的麻烦。船员们可能没有注意到我们的失踪。)”和“And if they had, they could not return because the rudder(舵)had broken.(如果他们注意到了, 他们也不能返回,因为船舵已经坏了。)” 根据最后一段中的“While one of us lay on his back, quite still, with arms crossed and legs stretched out(伸直), the other would swim and push him along. We exchanged every ten minutes or so. In this way, we could swim for hours, perhaps till daylight.(当我们中的一个人仰面躺着,一动不动,双臂交叉,双腿伸直时,另一个人会游泳,推着他走。我们大约每十分钟交换一次。这样,我们可以游泳几个小时,也许直到天亮。)”可知, 为了节省体力,他俩一个躺着,另外一人则一边游泳, 一边推着对方一起向前。故选C项。 【7题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“In this way, we could swim for hours, perhaps till daylight.(这样,我们可以游泳几个小时,也许直到天亮。)” 故选A项。 C As much as I love watching Olympic diving, I’ve never understood why athletes hurry off to the showers and then proceed to relax in a hot tub (热水浴池) after each dive. They’re already wet. They’re only in the pool for a handful of seconds, so it’s not like they need to get cleaned up. And doesn’t taking a shower serve the same purpose as sitting in a hot tub? Actually, that’s what Olympic divers usually do between dives as they know very well about the importance of warm-ups and cool-downs. So, what’s the actual reason? As it turns out, showers and hot tubs are used pretty interchangeably by the swimming pool. However, there is a need for both. First, let’s start with why divers need to take a shower between dives. It has to do with body temperature and keeping their muscles relaxed. As you can imagine, practicing dives in the pool, then having to keep your body warm in a shower, and then jumping off a 10-meter platform and into cold water couldn’t be comfortable for anyone. Going back and forth between these warm and cool temperatures can cause a diver’s muscles to tense or cramp up (痉挛), which can lead to injuries to the muscles. Showers allow an Olympic diver to recover and prevent that. In that way, showers and hot tubs serve the same purpose. A hot tub is generally used if you have a bit more time between dives and have already stretched. The shower walls on the pool deck can typically provide enough space for more divers at the same time, and they’re especially helpful for athletes who need to stretch or who only have a few minutes between dives. Just like Olympic swimmers depend on thick clothes to keep their muscles warm, Olympic divers rely on these methods to stay loose. If you ask me, it’s not a bad way to pass the time! 8. What does the underlined word “proceed” in Paragraph 1 mean? A. Fail. B. Continue. C. Stop. D. Afford. 9. Why do the athletes need showers after diving? A. To fully clean their body. B. To rest and wait for the results. C. To avoid possible muscle injuries. D. To stop themselves from catching a cold. 10. What does the last paragraph suggest? A. The shower walls are designed for divers in the final round. B. Olympic swimmers need to stay warm using hot tubs. C. Athletes usually do some activities to pass the time. D. Hot tubs are as important as showers for divers. 11. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text? A. To tell us the difference between diving and swimming. B To explain some little-known knowledge about divers. C. To compare cold showers with the hot bath. D. To provide some diving advice for us. B 9. C 10. D 11. They’re only in the pool for a handful of seconds, so it’s not like they need to get cleaned up. And doesn’t taking a shower serve the same purpose as sitting in a hot tub?(他们已经湿了。他们只在泳池里待了几秒钟,所以不需要清理。淋浴和泡在热水浴缸里不是有同样的作用吗?)”可知,本句主要是在说明运动员们每次跳水后都匆匆淋浴,然后继续在热水浴缸里放松。故猜测划线词proceed是“继续”的意思。故选B项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Going back and forth between these warm and cool temperatures can cause a diver’s muscles to tense or cramp up(痉挛), which can lead to injuries to the muscles. Showers allow an Olympic diver to recover and prevent that.(在这些温暖和凉爽的温度之间来回会导致跳水运动员的肌肉紧张或抽筋,这可能导致肌肉受伤。淋浴可以让奥运选手恢复并防止这种情况)”可知,运动员跳水后淋浴是为了避免可能的肌肉损伤。故选C项。 【10题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“In that way, showers and hot tubs serve the same purpose. 通读全文,并根据第一段“As much as I love watching Olympic diving, I’ve never understood why athletes hurry off to the showers and then proceed to relax in a hot tub (热水浴池) after each dive. They’re already wet. They’re only in the pool for a handful of seconds, so it’s not like they need to get cleaned up. And doesn’t taking a shower serve the same purpose as sitting in a hot tub? D Teenagers who talk on the cell phone a lot, and hold their phones up to their right ears, score worse on one type of memory test. That’s the finding of a new study. That memory impairment might be one side effect of the radiation (放射线) that phones use to keep us connected while we’re on the go. The teens took memory tests twice, one year apart. Nearly 700 Swiss teens took part in a test of figural memory. This type helps us remember abstract (抽象的) symbols and shapes, explains Milena Foerster. Each time, they had one minute to remember 13 pairs of abstract shapes. Then they were shown one item from each pair and asked to match it with one of the five choices. The study volunteers also took a test of verbal memory. That’s the ability to remember words. The two memory tests are part of an intelligence test. The researchers also surveyed the teens on how they use cell phones. And they got call records from phone companies. The researchers used those records to figure out how long the teens were using their phones. This allowed the researchers to work out how big radiation exposure (接触) each person could have got while talking. A phone user’s exposure to the radiation can differ widely. Some teens talk on their phones more than others. People also hold their phones differently. If the phone is close to the ear, more radiation may enter the body, Foerster notes. The teens’ scores in the figural memory tests were roughly the same from one year to the next. But those who normally held their phones near the right ears, and who were also exposed to higher levels of radiation, scored a little bit worse after a year. No group of teens showed big changes on the verbal memory test. Why might one type of memory be linked to cell phone use, but not another? Foerster thinks it could have to do with where different memory centers sit in the brain. The site that deals with the ability to remember shapes is near the right ear. 12. The underlined word “impairment” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean “_______ ”. A. result B. damage C. mistake D. improvement 13. Which of the following can be learned from Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3? A. The teens took two types of memory tests four times in total. B. The teens needed to report the average time spent on their phones. C. Researchers paid little attention to the teens’ habits of using phones. D. The teens’ ability of remembering words is shown in figural memory test. 14. According to the study, teens who use their phone s to their right ears a lot do worse in _____. A. matching numbers B. reading signals C. remembering shape D. learning words 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Cell Phone Use and Safety Warnings B. Facts About Cell Phone Use at School C. Dangerous Levels of Cell Phone Use Among Teens D. Teen’s Cell Phone Use Linked to Memory Problems 【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. 根据第一段“Teenagers who talk on the cell phone a lot, and hold their phones up to their right ears, score worse on one type of memory test.(在一项记忆力测试中,经常打电话并把手机举到右耳前的青少年得分更低。)” 根据第二段中“The teens took memory tests twice, one year apart. Nearly 700 Swiss teens took part in a test of figural memory.(这些青少年进行了两次记忆测试,间隔一年。近700名瑞士青少年参加了一项数字记忆测试。)”和“The study volunteers also took a test of verbal memory.(参与研究的志愿者还进行了口头记忆测试。)” 故选A。 根据最后一段“The site that deals with the ability to remember shapes is near the right ear.(处理形状记忆能力的部位在右耳附近。)” 根据文章第一段第一句“Teenagers who talk on the cell phone a lot, and hold their phones up to their right ears, score worse on one type of memory test.(在一项记忆力测试中,经常打电话并把手机举到右耳前的青少年得分更低。)” Knowing how to communicate well needs very personal attention between you and another human being. And if they had they could not return because the rudder (舵) had broken. A A party. B. A competition. C. An accident. D. A game. 6. What did the two men do to save strength? A They both swam calmly. C As much as I love watching Olympic diving, I’ve never understood why athletes hurry off to the showers and then proceed to relax in a hot tub (热水浴池) after each dive. B. To explain some little-known knowledge about divers. C. To compare cold showers with the hot bath. D. To provide some diving advice for us.
