Did ancient Chinese people have weekends or public holidays? The weekly calendar was invented in the West. In ancient China, there were no such things as weekends because people did not use a weekly calendar. But they could still relax after work.
During the Han Dynasty, officials (官员) took one day off every five days. When it came to the Tang Dynasty, officials had to work for ten days before they could rest for one day. But this was still reasonable, because officials at the time shared their work together. What else did they do on that day? The answer is surprising. People like businessmen and farmers had to work most of the year. But even the hardest-working people could take a few days off during the public holidays. I watched the Paris 2024 Olympic Games this summer vacation. Here I’d like to share my thoughts of watching the games with you.
All the athletes and sports teams impressed me a lot. Especially our Chinese Delegation achieved a total of 40 gold medals, tying with the US for the first place.
To tell you the truth, I like volleyball best. So what I admire most is our Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team. This newly-formed team beat against the strong Turkey Team in the quarter-finals. Our players overcame difficulties and fought very bravely. But I was not surprised that they failed to reach the podium (领奖台), due to the lack of strength. Anyway, their fighting spirit has always inspired me to work hard. Never give up and keep fighting, you’ll do it one day!
