Wu Jianxiong is one of the most influential nuclear physicists(核物理学家) of the 20th century. She was born on May 31, 1912, in Liuhe town, Taicang. It was a time when new thoughts rushed in as people tried to find ways to bring the country back to life. Her father, Wu Zhongyi, mixing western ideas and Chinese thoughts, had a great influence on her life.
During her 44-year career as a nuclear physicist, Wu was “first” in many ways. She was the first woman to be president of American Physical Society, the first female winner of the Comstock Prize in physics given by the US National Academy of Sciences, the first person to receive the
Wolf Prize in physics, the first honorary doctorate awarded by Princeton University to a woman, and the first female professor of physics in the history of Columbia University.
Wu always took experiments seriously. She always spent a great deal of time checking instruments. Besides, to get accurate(精确的) results from experiments, she worked very hard day and night at a lab. There was a saying among physicists: If the experiment was done by Wu, it must be correct. “Her findings completely changed our view of the universe,” said Brian Greene, a professor of physics and mathematics at Columbia University.
“She indeed had set a great model for women and girls to see the limitlessness(无限) of life, and what can be gained by pushing past the difficulties around you, ” wrote Jada Yuan in an article when she thought back of the time spent with Wu, her grandmother.
On Feb 16, 1997, Wu died in the US. According to her will, she was buried in her hometown Taicang.

When people think about improving their physical fitness, they often neglect (忽视) balance. Good balance is a necessary part of being physically fit and key to living a long life, according to research. It’s important for everyone, no matter your age.
Older adults are most affected by poor balance. Falls are the leading cause of injury and death
for those 65 and older, with nearly 30% in this age group reporting at least one fall in 2018, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But younger adults frequently fall down, too.
Forty-eight percent of young adults reported falling at least once during one 16-week study. The falls most commonly happened during sports activities, with women in the study reporting more falls and fall-related injuries than men.
Falls within the previous two years were reported by 18% of young adults (ages 20 to 45) in another study published in the journal BMC Public Health. That figure (数据) compared with 21% of middle-aged adults (46 to 65) reporting falls and 35% of those over 65. While falls among young adults were often connected with sports, falls by the middle-aged group were typically related to health problems and physical changes.
Many factors (因素) can affect your balance outside of age, such as vision changes, brain injuries, overweight and a general lack of physical fitness. Even if you have no risk factors, simply neglecting to work regularly on your balance will result in increased instability (不稳定性).
“Our body is conditioned to lose what we don’t regularly use and practice, and balance is no different,” said Susan Baxter.
28. What role does a good balance play in our lives?
A. It helps us live a healthy and long life.
B. It enables us to build a perfect shape.
C. It protects us from getting seriously sick.
D. It has the power to make us look young.
29. How does the author show the research results?
A. By having a discussion. B. By following the time order.
C. By raising questions. D. By giving a list of figures.
30. In which situation are young adults likely to fall down?
A. When a health problem comes up. B. When working regularly.
C. When a physical change appears. D. When joining in a sport.
31. What can we learn from what Susan Baxter said?
A. We’ll lose our balance if we don’t practise it often.
B. Our body is used to working in its own way.
C. We should manage our body properly.
D. We are naturally born with balance.

Only 10 hours remained before Typhoon (台风) Muifa was due to make landfall in eastern China. Su Dike and his teammates decided to head to Zhoushan, Zhejiang province, from Ningbo to encounter the storm.
Their car hadn’t been on the road long before they came across tire trouble and they had to immediately rent a car and move their equipment in the rainstorm. They finally made it to Zhoushan and found a good position to record the typhoon.
There were few people or cars on the road when they saw trees falling down under the force of strong winds and street lamps blinking out in the heavy rain. After some 10 minutes, the rain suddenly became lighter and the wind turned softer, meaning that they were now in the eye of the typhoon.
“While chasing (追赶) the storm, we collected a lot of information. We hope the information can help people to better understand such storms,” Su says in his video, recording this exciting adventure (探险).
“People may think we — storm chasers — are looking for excitement, but we actually shoulder the responsibility for each chase, as we need to get to the deepest point of a storm to get first-hand information that will help us to deal with future climate change,” he explains.
Su employs a spirit of exploration while using almost all of his spare time chasing storms, which means not running around blindly, but preparing by doing research. “The chase itself is hot-blooded, but it also needs a cool head. It’s a mixture of science and excitement,” Su says.
32. What’s the probable meaning of “encounter” underlined in paragraph 1?
A. Avoid. B. Control. C. Meet. D. Prevent.
33. What happened while Su Dike was in the center of the typhoon?
A. It was not raining so hard. B. The wind was stronger.
C. Street lamps went out. D. Trees fell down.
34. What is the real purpose of storm-chasing adventures?
A To become popular. B. To collect information.
C. To share videos. D. To look for excitement.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Weather forecast B. Chasing storms as a hobby
C. Typhoon warning D. Running around blindly

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My Parents and I had been planning my brothers’ birthday party since the beginning of March. Johnny would be six years old in two days. My mom was going to bake a special chocolate cake. I wonder what I can do to make my brother’s birthday special.
I knew my parents had already bought a present for me to give to Johnny, but I wanted to buy him something I had chosen myself and with the money I had saved. After giving it some thoughts, I wanted to buy him the paint-by-number kit (数字涂色小套装) I had seen at the store around the corner.
I decided to empty my coin jar and see how much money I had saved. However, I was disappointed to find there was much less than I had imagined. “I only have about three dollars,” I said to myself. The set cost more than I have saved.
Suddenly a “great” idea came to me. I went into my parents’ bedroom where my dad kept loose change in a box. I carefully counted out what I needed to make up the difference. I’m sure
Dad won’t mind just this once, I thought.
However, I was soon overcome by guilt (负罪感). Even though there was no one else in the bedroom, I felt like I was being watched. Mom was always telling us about the importance of honesty. Maybe my plan wasn’t such a great idea after all, I thought.
However, I ran to the store. Once I got there, I took the paint-by-number kit from the shelf.
“Can I help you, young lady?” the saleswoman asked.
“No. I’m just looking, thank you.” I said.
“That’s a really nice paint kit. We sell a lot of them and, as you can see, that’s the last one. ” she said.

五、小作文(本题共1小题,每小题15分,共15分)
Good morning, everyone!
I'm very glad to give a speech today. The topic of my speech is how we should protect wild animals.
wild animals are man's close friends. They are not only harmony with us for thousands years but also play an important role in keeping the balance of nature. Unfortunately, It is just human beings that destroy their habitats and living environments, leading to their extinction. what's worse, some greedy people are killing them for their fur, horns , teeth or meat.
In order to protect them, it is time to take some measures. In my opinion, first, effective laws must be passed to punish illegal hunting. Second, we must set up nature reserves to provide wild animals with safe homes. Third people's awareness of protecting the environment must be raised to a higher level﹣﹣no deal, no killing.
I do wish that we and wild animals live together happily to make our planet more beautiful.
Thank you!
6、 续写(本题共1小题,每小题25分,共25分)
【答案】Paragraph 1:
I nodded my head in agreement, with my mind racing. “Whether to buy or not?” I was wondering. My hungry eyes rested on the paint-by-number kit. “Could you help me keep it for a week?” I begged anxiously with my cheeks burning. Much to my surprise, he nodded his head in agreement. I turned around, walked out of the store and headed home. I slid into the bedroom, stood on my tiptoe and put back the change one by one. In the meantime, I could hear my heart pounding.
Paragraph 2:
I would just have to wait until I saved the extra money I needed. Apart from doing housework for my parents, I applied for a job in the community so that I could earn more money. In the following week, I delivered newspapers and fed pets for the neighbors from morning till night. Tired as I was, I still enjoyed myself. Having got enough money, I went to the corner store and bought the special gift. Never did my brother think that he would receive my gift. Seeing my brother was not at a loss what to do, I was floating on air.
