“Keep your eyes open. This is where the Ewoks live.” The onehour drive outside of San Francisco, covered in clouds along windy roads, has inspired my husband to say this sentence at least a dozen times.
We finally arrive at Muir Woods National Park.I explain the strange green stuff on trunks of trees as we pass by—moss (苔藓),something my 5yearold son Cole has never seen in the desert where we live.
“Mom,are Ewoks real? I think they maybe aren't real.” There's a question in Cole's voice, like he's trying on this idea.
We've been down the road of pretending versus reality before, what with all the talk of superheroes and such around our house.“I think you are right.Ewoks are just in the movies. But it would be cool if they were real, right?”
Cole's silent for a while, thinking.“I just saw an Ewok's ear back there!” Coles spotted an additional Ewok arm and one full body of the tiny hairy creatures. It does indeed look like we are in the Ewok forest of Star Wars.
Cole's imagination is more than I can understand. What do plants eat? Which is the best planet? Which rocks float? He loves life.He loves his inner world and outer existence equally.
I hear a lot of worry from parents about media sucking the souls from our children, taking away their time for creative play. For us,this hasn't been the case.Cole and his brother are quite knowledgeable in the realities of life when it comes to Angry Birds,Curious George, and the adventures of Indiana Jones. These characters, and others of their own invention, live in my home like visitors, joining us on walks and outings.I appreciate them, though not all the time, for the company they give my sons and their busy minds.
I think of media characters as an addon to already busy minds.By carefully monitoring who gets invited into our lives, they become part of the parenting team. They teach loyalty, adventure, curiosity—lessons I'm trying to convey, but in a much cooler way than I can.
Pretense is awesome. It provides practice for real life without the ordinary interfering.

You try to keep your eyes wide open while watching a basketball match or a wonderful firework show in case you might miss something exciting in just the blink (眨眼睛) of an eye.But in fact, humans blink about 15 times per minute on average.Have you ever missed anything because you blinked? Probably not.Why is that?
According to a new study published in the journal Current Biology in September, our brain has the ability to skip the temporary darkness when we blink. It can keep visual information for a short period of time and then put it together to form an image without interruption.
In order to understand how this works,a group of scientists at the German Primate Center conducted an experiment. In the study, the participants were asked to look at patterns on a screen whose direction could be shown in different ways, such as horizontally or vertically (垂直地).When one pattern was about to disappear and the next one was about to come, the participants had to indicate the direction that the next pattern would appear.
The researchers found that when the directions of two patterns didn't match, the area in our brain which is responsible for visual memory was activated. This same area showed less activity when two patterns were in the same direction.
“The medial prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层) adjusts current visual information to previously obtained information, and thus enables us to sense the world with more stability, even when we briefly close our eyes to blink,” Caspar Schwiedrzik explained in Science Daily. He is the first author of the study and also a scientist at the German Primate Center.
4.We don't miss anything when blinking because our brain can________.
A.remember all that we see
B.deal with the missing image
C.imagine what our eyes miss
D.recognize our pieces of memory
5.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Visual information.
B.Our brain.
C.Current Biology.
D.The temporary darkness.
6.What do we know about the experiment?
A.The different directions activated visual memory.
B.Visual memory can be more activated by similarity.
C.Participants can interpret patterns differently.
D.The two patterns appear at the same time.
7.What is the passage mainly talking about?
A.The brain's structure.
B.The brain's special skill.
C.The brain's activated patterns.
D.The brain's directions.
故选A项。
根据第四段中的“when the directions of two patterns didn't match, the area in our brain which is responsible for visual memory was activated. This same area showed less activity when two patterns were in the same direction.” 故选A项。

People back in the United States are always asking me,“What's it like to live in China?” They hope to hear strange stories about weird food and cultural conflicts.Instead,I tell them that living in China is like being a baby.
Please don't misunderstand me.I don't think that Chinese people are babies.I am a baby.Or at least,I become one when I leave my house. That's because babies can't read, and when I leave my house in Beijing,I'm illiterate
This can be dangerous. If a sign says,“Watch out for big angry bears,” in Chinese,I will continue walking, completely ignorant of my peril (危险).Then a bear will eat me for breakfast.
I have started to recognize a few characters, but they seem impossible to ever learn without a lifetime of study. When I see a character I like,I give it a name. There is “The Square,”“The Octopus (章鱼), ”“Theupsidedown Octopus,” and my favorite,“Upsidedown Octopus on an airplane.”However, I still don't know their sounds or meanings. They are just beautiful mysteries to my eyes.
Because I can't read, city streets present an endless series of enigmas .If I see a business,I wonder, “Is that a restaurant? A dentist? A lawyer's office?” Once, while hungry,I saw a big colorful sign.I walked in and asked a realtor (房屋中介) to see the drink menu.
Speaking of menus, eating at restaurant is a daily misadventure. Many places have photos of food, which is helpful. But if they have no photos,I walk from table to table and point at whatever looks delicious.I apologize if I've ever interrupted your dinner to point at your plate.I didn't mean to be rude.I was just a hungry baby!
8.Why does the author think living in China is like being a baby?
A.Some Chinese people behave like babies.
B.It's comfortable to be a baby in China.
C.He is as curious as a baby about Chinese things.
D.He is like a newborn who can't read at all.
9.What do we know about the author?
A.He can order food in simple Chinese.
B.He doesn't know many Chinese characters.
C.His spoken Chinese is better than his written Chinese.
D.He memorizes Chinese words based on their sounds.
10.In Paragraph 5,what does the underlined word “enigmas” mean?
A.Stories. B.Miracles.
C.Choices. D.Puzzles.
11.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The author's love for Chinese food.
B.The language barrier the author meets in China.
C.Cultural conflicts the author faces in China.
D.How the author overcomes difficulties in learning Chinese.
根据第二段中的“That's because babies can't read,and when I leave my house in Beijing,I'm illiterate.”
根据第四段中的“I have started to recognize a few characters, but they seem impossible to ever learn without a lifetime of study.”
根据画线词所在句后的“If I see a business,I wonder,‘Is that a restaurant?A dentist?A 1awyer's office?’”推知,画线词所在句“Because I can't read,city streets present an endless series of enigmas.”
根据文章内容,特别是第一段中的“I tell them that living in China is like being a baby.”
D
Recent years have witnessed the growth of luxury (奢侈品) brands. It's clear that a new generation of young, materialistic people is increasingly relying on luxury brands to improve its selfimage.
I am a fashionista too,at least in spirit—I love to look at clothes and shoes. But I don't understand why people spend lots of money on designer labels. When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months of her salary, that's a scary thing.
What's interesting is that scientists have found that having luxury things doesn't lead to happiness.
Study after study has shown that although we want material things, when we get them we don't suddenly become “happy” people. In fact,a series of studies have shown that individuals who spend money on travel and similar experiences get more pleasure than those on material things. That's because experiences are more easily integrated into a person's identity. If I travel to Yunnan, that adventure affects how I think in the future. My memories become a part of me.Moreover,as Van Boven has observed, young people who pursue happiness through “things” are liked less by their peers.People prefer those who pursue happiness through experiences.
It's natural to want to express yourself through your appearance. So my advice is:create a look that isn't tied to a designer label.Convey your own message.Take some lessons from Steve Jobs.He was always in jeans and a black turtleneck.Mark Zuckerberg routinely appears in hoodies and sneakers. These people, successful people, have style.
You don't have to break the bank to send a message about who you are.Take a trip.Go out into the world. Then come back and confidently create your own signature look.
12.What's the author's attitude towards luxury consumption?
A.Favorable. B.Negative.
C.Positive. D.Unconcerned.
13.What's the main idea of the fourth paragraph?
A.Material things can't bring about joy.
B.Experiences sink into personality.
C.It's better to invest in experiences.
D.Others' preference is of importance.
14.Why are Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg mentioned in the text?
A.To honor the two successes.
B.To advocate their experience.
C.To support the author's argument.
D.To inspire young people's ambition.
15.What is the underlined sentence intended to express?
A.Do mind your financial security.
B.Do try to make more money.
C.Don't rob a bank for luxuries.
D.Don't spend much on your image.
根据第二段中“But I don't understand why people spend lots of money on designer labels. When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months of her salary, that's a scary thing.”
根据第二段中“When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months of her salary, that's a scary thing.” Go out into the world. Then come back and confidently create your own signature look.”
Laboratory studies have shown that prolonged exposure to highintensity blue light damages retinal (视网膜的) cells in mice.__16__ So,why is there the disconnect between blue light's effects on rodent (啮齿类动物) eyes and human eyes?
__17__ We have protective elements, such as macular pigments (黄斑色素) and the natural blueblocking ability of the crystalline lens (晶状体).These structures absorb blue light before it reaches the delicate retina.
Just because blue light isn't harming your retina,it doesn't mean your electronic devices are harmless.__18__ Mounting evidence suggests that screen time before bed increases the time it takes to fall asleep. It also robs you of restorative rapideyemovement sleep, dulls focus, and reduces brain activity the next day.
__19__
First, turn off your electronic devices before bed.Outside of the bedroom, when you do look at your screens, lower the brightness.
Second, follow the “20—20—20” rule. The American Optometric Association (美国视光学会) defines this rule as taking a 20second break every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet in the distance.__20__
Third, use lubricating eye drops before extended computer use. This method will build up the body's natural tears and keep the eye's surface waterbearing.
A.This will allow your eyes to relax.
B.Human eyes are different from rodent eyes.
C.That's why it's so important to have your eyes tested regularly.
D.Because of its wavelength, blue light does disrupt healthy sleep physiology
E.But epidemiological (流行病学的) studies on real people tell a different story.
F.Consumers often don't think about the impact digital devices might have on their vision.
G.There are ways to make your screen viewing more comfortable and more helpful to sleep.
根据设空处后的“First, turn off your electronic devices before bed.Second, follow the‘20—20—20’rule.”“Third, use lubricating eye drops before extended computer use.”

21.C 根据前一句中的“the world of horse racing belongs to men”和空前的“However”可知,此处与前一句之间为转折关系,指凯蒂·克劳森改变了这一现状。
22.D 根据最后一段中的“Clawson knew her racing career wouldn't last forever. After a ________ and an injury to her brain,Clawson raced one more time before ________ at the end of 2017.”
23.A 根据第三段中的“In 2016,Clawson's third start as a jockey turned into her first win.”
该空前一句“Hill grew up in Kentucky.”与空后的“he still didn't know much about the racing industry”之间为转折关系,表示“希尔在肯塔基州长大,但他并不那么了解赛马”。
26.D 根据下一段中的“In 2016,Clawson's third start as a jockey turned into her first win.” break down意为“出故障”;get across意为“解释清楚”;call out意为“呼唤”;take off意为“突然开始成功;起飞”。
29.D 根据空后的“some bigname women riders like Chantal and Rosie helped ________ that wall for her”可知,这些有名的女骑师帮助了克劳森,所以她很幸运。
break down意为“打破;砸破”;set up意为“建立”,cut across意为“抄近路;影响到”;care about意为“关心”。
31.B 根据文章第一句中的“the world of horse racing belongs to men”可知,人们一直刻板地认为赛马是男性运动。
32.C 根据下一句“Clawson knew her racing career wouldn't last forever.”
33.B 根据空后的“an injury to her brain”并结合常识可知,她应是从马上摔下来,头部受伤了。
34.A 根据第一段中的“she decided to stop her ________ after just more than a year”可知,此处应指克劳森在退役前的最后一场比赛。

36.has conducted/has been conducting
分析句子结构可知,“______ (track)down more than 1 billion Chinese citizens”在句中作主语,故空处应用动名词Tracking或不定式To track。
41.to be bothered 考查非谓语动词。
have a/an...effect on为固定搭配,意为“对……

First,it's an affordable sport.Even though you have to buy an admission ticket,it isn't pricey.Second, swimming is beneficial to your heart and lungs. In addition to its physical benefits, swimming is also an effective way to relax.Spending hours in the pool in hot summer is always my favorite pastime.
In conclusion,as a very good workout, swimming can give you peace of mind to continue with your day.

I prided myself on being a good neighbor. My husband,Charles, and I knew everyone who lived along our rural road.Walking that road,I thought about how we all relied on each other. We picked up mail for people on vacation, lent out tools, and watched each other's children. Each house I passed held a friendly association.
Except Kelly's.
It hadn't always been this way.At one time,Kelly and I had a good relationship. Our children were close in age and often played together. Our husbands were playmates.I never went by her house without waving or stopping to chat if I saw her outside.
Not anymore. If Kelly was out in her yard when I walked or drove by,I acted as if I hadn't seen her and there had been a big wall between us.At first it felt satisfying to let Kelly know what I thought of her.Today the sight of her house just made me sad.
How did things go wrong? It had all started with a cat.A stray (无主的宠物) who turned up in my driveway. That wasn't unusual.I already had two stray cats I had adopted as well as a dog.But this cat was violent. He drove my own cats away from their food bowls and hissed at me when I tried to drive him off.
Imagine my surprise a few days later when Kelly announced that she was taking in the cat.“I think he's sweet,” she said.
I didn't even know that Kelly liked cats. She'd never had one before as far as I knew.Living with Kelly didn't make the cat any friendlier. He constantly showed up on our porch, stealing our cats' food and picking fights.“That cat's out of control,” I said to Kelly angrily over the phone one day.“I've had enough of it.”
“He's always perfectly sweet with us!” Kelly said, getting defensive.“I have no idea that you dislike him so much.”

That was the first brick in the wall between us.On a sunny day,I was bathed in the beautiful sunshine when suddenly the cat jumped on my laps.It seemed to come out of nowhere so my hair almost stood on end.Bouncing up from my chair,I dropped the cat hard on the ground and ran after it.While this was going on,Kelly was just standing on her balcony glaring at me.“That was how you treat my cat?” she shouted.A brick turned into a wall from the noon.
One day, when I was walking on that road again,I saw Kelly smiling at me.I smiled back, saying,“I was sorry for the cat the other day!” She admitted the cat was not friendly sometimes and that her husband had sent it to the“Stray Cats Shelter”.“Our relationship is not that easy to break, isn't it?”She looked at me in the eye.We burst into laughter immediately and gone was the wall.
