China's nuclear dragon
China's first nuclear power unit that uses Hualong One,a thirdgeneration(三代) nuclear power technology, was put into commercial(商业的) operation in Fuqing,Fujian province,on Jan 30,making China the fourth country to master independent thirdgeneration nuclear technology following the US,France and Russia, according to China Daily.
Each unit using Hualong One technology is able to produce nearly 10 billion kilowatts hour of electricity annually, meeting the demand of 1 million people in a moderately(中等地) developed country. It is expected to reduce standard coal consumption(消费) by 3.12 million tons and carbon dioxide emissions(排放)by 8.16 million tons annually, the same as planting more than 70 million trees, according to China Daily.
“Hualong” means China's dragon in Chinese, and this is China's dragon from head to toe.“Hualong One's core components(核心组件) have been granted(授予)complete independent intellectual property rights(知识产权),” Xing Ji,chief designer of the Hualong One reactor, told CGTN.Eighty percent of its equipment was made in China, including all core equipment, suggesting mass production capabilities (能力),said China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).
The thirdgeneration nuclear power technology is definitely the highlight of the nuclear power unit.So what distinguishes(区别) different generations of nuclear power technology? According to the National Energy Administration,it mainly depends on the safety level.Hualong One meets the strictest safety standards in the world, according to the CNNC.
Countries from all over the world are turning to green energies with lower carbon footprints.Compared to wind and solar power, nuclear power does not depend on weather and allows largescale power supply,Xue Xiaogang, president of the China Institute of Atomic Energy, told CGTN.
“Especially in China, there is greater room for nuclear power,”he pointed out.Electricity produced by fossil fuels still accounts for 70 percent of China's total power. With high demands for energy to further economic growth and reduce damage to the environment,China is adjusting its energy structure for a greener development.“Nuclear power might be the best choice so far,”Xue said.

Reaching for the stars
Although life on Earth was chaotic (混乱的) in 2020,we can still look to the stars for new hope in 2021.
Last year,Japan's Hayabusa2 returned with several grams of samples from the asteroid (小行星) Ryugu.China also brought back some lunar (月球的) soil and rocks within the course of a month.Meanwhile,NASA teamed up with SpaceX to send two men to the International Space Station.Despite the pandemic,2020 had been a busy year for space, and 2021 looks to be busier.
Three shuttles (航天飞机) launched in 2020 are on their way to the red planet,Mars. The United Arab Emirates' Mars Hope, the nation's first mission to the red planet,is due to arrive in February.China's Tianwen1 mission is also expected to arrive in midFebruary, making China the second country to softland a spacecraft on the Martian surface. Finally,NASA's Mars Perseverance launched in 2020 with likely be the third craft to reach Mars—also in February, according to Ars Technica.
After many delays, the James Webb Space Telescope, the successor (继承者) of the Hubble Telescope,is planning to launch on Halloween on a European Ariane 5 rocket. After the launch, its sunshield (遮阳板) and mirror assemblies (组装) will deploy (部署) over the course of two weeks. The Webb telescope “will find the first galaxies (星系) that formed in the early universe and peer (看见) through dusty clouds to see stars forming planetary systems”,according to NASA.
China will also begin the first steps toward building the country's first space station.Within the first half of the year,China will launch the core module (组件) Tianhe on a Long March 5B rocket. This module will include the habitation chamber(居住室)for taikonauts (中国宇航员) and visitors to the station.Fueland supply missions will follow the initial launch, and two experiment modules will join the station in 2022.
With so much more human activity in space, orbital debris (残骸) is becoming more of a concern. To that end,Astroscale's ELSAd mission is the first step toward commercial debris removal as it will attempt to move dead satellites and remove space junk.
2021 will be a year of science“the likes of which we've rarely seen,”according to Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator at NASA.
