They can all be available through E-mail. 3. In which part of a newspaper can you most probably read this passage? A. Science B. Today’s News C. Entertainment D. History and Culture B I presented a group project to my classmates. The first question asked was, “What words do you associate with rural education?” Some of the responses were positive. Others accurately portrayed a few of the negatives like “isolated” and “underfunded.” But I was surprised that some used words like “hillbillies” and “hicks” (乡巴佬). Previously, I felt proud of myself as a student from rural West Virginia. But at that moment, my pride sank. For a place that claims to welcome all, the Brown University has actually left its rural students feeling looked down upon. For a while, I never mentioned where I called home unless it was absolutely necessary. By the third month of my first year, I was prepared to transfer out of Brown and finish college at a school where I would be surrounded by people like me, people from rural communities. Then I realized that this response was just the one that my tormentors expected. Now I have decided to fight back. We need to change. But this deeply-rooted culture won’t change on its own. The University and its non-rural students can’t and won’t do it. So it is up to us, the rural students, to make a difference. So rural students, talk with your long, drawn-out accent, defend your hometown of hard-working people and condemn (谴责) the ignorance that attempts to deny your personhood. We must uplift other rural students in their academic and professional careers. We must be the ones to support each other. What we need is a club for that exact purpose. A rural students’ collective is the formal meeting place that we need and deserve. In an institution where rural students feel lost and deserted, we will soon find a common ground for each other. For the non-rural students and faculty wondering how to support us, don’t stick to your stereotypes (刻板印象) that rural students are dumb, ignorant and unintelligent. On the contrary, we are valuable, deserving and hard-working individuals. Brown’s faculty and students should welcome and embrace our contributions. 4. How did the writer feel after presenting the group project? A. Frustrated. B. Proud. C. Angry. D. Confused. 5. What group of students does the underlined word “tormentors” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to? A. Those who come from rural West Virginia. B. Those who are determined to make a change. C. Those who used words like “hillbillies” and “hicks” in their remarks. D. Those who associated rural education with “isolated” and “underfunded” . 6. How does the writer think rural students should fight back? A. They should turn to the college authority for help. B. They should unite and reach out to assist each other. C. They need to set up a special club for all the students. D. They are supposed to avoid speaking with their local accent. 7. What message does the writer want to convey? A. Positive attitudes contribute to a harmonious college. B. Discrimination is a common phenomenon in Virginia. C. Rural students in Brown are valuable and deserve respect. D. The Brown University badly needs to adjust its moral education. C Should doctors ever lie to benefit their patient — to speed recovery or to cover the coming of death? In medicine as in law, government, and other lines of work, the requirements of honesty often seem dwarfed (变矮小) by greater needs: the need to protect from brutal news or to uphold a promise of secrecy; to advance the public interest. What should doctors say, for example, to a 46-year-old man coming in for a routine physical checkup just before going on vacation with his family who, though he feels in perfect health, is found to have a form of cancer that will cause him to die within six months? Is it best to tell him the truth? If he asks, should the doctor reject that he is ill, or minimize fee gravity of the illness? Should they at least hide the truth until after the family vacation? Doctors face such choices often. At times they see important reasons to lie for the patient’s own sake; in their eyes, such lies differ sharply from self-serving ones. Studies show that most doctors sincerely believe that the seriously ill patients do not want to know the truth about their condition, and that informing them risks destroying their hope, so that they may recover more slowly, or deteriorate (恶化) faster, perhaps even commit suicide (自杀). But other studies show that, contrary to the belief of many physicians; a great majority of patients do want to be told the truth, even about serious illness, and feel cheated when they learn that they have been misled. We are also learning that truthful information, humanly conveyed, helps patients cope with illness: help them tolerate pain better, need less medicine, and even recover faster after operation. There is urgent need to debate this issue openly. Not only in medicine, but in other professions as well, practitioners may find themselves repeatedly in difficulty where serious consequences seem avoidable only through deception (欺骗). Yet the public has every reason to know professional deception, for such practices are peculiarly likely to become deeply rooted, to spread, and to trust. Neither in medicine, nor in law, government, or the social sciences can there be comfort in the old saying, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.” 8. What is the passage mainly about? A. Whether patients really want to know the truth of their condition. B. Whether patients should be told the truth of their illness. C. Whether different studies should be carried on. D. Whether doctors are honesty with their patients. 9. For the case mentioned in paragraph 2, most doctors will ____. A. tell the patient the truth as soon as possible B. choose to lie to him about his condition at that moment C. tell him to shorten the family vacation D. advise him to cancel the family vacation 10. Which of the following is TRUE? A. Sometimes government tells lies because they need to meet the public interest. B. Doctors believe if they lie, those seriously-ill patients will recover more quickly. C. Truthful information helps patients deal with their illness in some cases. D. Many patients don’t want to know the truth, especially about serious illness. 11. From the passage, we can learn that the author’s attitude to professional deception is ____. A. supportive B. indifferent C. opposed D. neutral D Mobile devices use facial recognition technology to help users quickly and securely unlock their phones, make a financial deal or access medical records. But facial recognition technologies that use a specific user-detection method are highly vulnerable (脆弱的) to deepfake (深度伪造) attacks. Researchers found that most applications using facial liveness verification (活性验证) don’t always detect digitally processed photos or videos made to look like alive version of someone else, also known as deepfakes. Applications that do use these detection measures are also much less effective at identifying deepfakes than what the app provider has claimed. “In recent years we have observed rapid development of facial verification technologies,” said TingWang, a principal investigator on the project. “Meanwhile, we have also seen significant advances in deepfake technologies, making it fairly easy to make live-looking facial images and videos at little cost. We thus ask the interesting question: Is it possible for attackers to misuse deepfakes to fool the facial verification systems?” Wang’s research is the first systematic study on the security of facial liveness verification in real-world settings. Wang and his team developed a new deepfake-powered attack framework, called LiveBugger. They evaluated six leading commercial facial liveness verification applications. The researchers found that all four of the most common verification methods could be easily bypassed, which proved that the development of deepfake technologies raises a great threat to the commonly used technology. Thus Wang suggested matching lip movements with a user’s voice to analyze both audio and video instead of using a static image of a user’s face. “Facial liveness verification has been applied in many important situations, such as online payments, online banking and government services,” said Wang. “Additionally, an increasing number of cloud platforms have begun to provide facial liveness verification, which significantly reduces the cost and lowers the barrier for companies to use the technology in their products. Therefore, the security of facial liveness verification is highly concerning.” 12. The wide use of facial recognition technology is encouraged by all the facts EXCEPT _______ . A its convenience to unlock phones B. its easy access to our medical records C. its combination with deepfake technology D. its security concerning our financial deals 13. What can we learn about LiveBugger? A. It is a destructive computer virus. B. It is a facial liveness verification application. C. It creates popular live-looking facial images and videos. D. It is a framework testing facial liveness verification applications. 14. What is Wang’s attitude toward facial liveness verification? A. Worried. B. Negative. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful. 15. Which serves as the best title for the passage? A. LiveBugger: an attack framework powered by deepfakes B. A discovery that may cause panic in the world of technology C. Deepfakes reveal vulnerabilities in facial recognition technology D. Measures have to be taken to improve facial recognition technology If you are someone who struggles with exam anxiety know that you aren’t alone. I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last-minute studying for my first hour math test. I was confident of getting good grades. Then I left my house. Ten minutes later, I got on school bus with my friends. We were busy chatting about how we spent our weekend. At one stop, Fat Ryan got on hurriedly. He tripped (绊倒) over someone’s foot accidentally and THUMP! He fell down onto the floor. Every one of us on the bus looked on and laughed crazily. Ryan struggled to his feet, dusted (擦灰) off his jacket and made his way to an empty seat. He tried to laugh with us, but his face was burning with embarrassment (尴尬). The rest of the morning flew by. I did well in my math test. I read two more chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird in English class. It wasn’t long before we heard the lunch bell. I met my friends from the cheerleading (拉拉队) team in the dining hall. Then I couldn’t help but notice Ryan a few tables away, sitting all alone. He caught me looking. I smiled at him quickly and looked away. When we had finished eating, we went out to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night’s football game. After much practice, we finally managed to do the cheer perfectly. We decided to practice it again one last time. Again, just like the rest of my day so far, the cheer was going great. I raised my leg for one last toe (脚趾) touch. RIIPPP! I felt my jeans broken, in the middle of my backside (臀部). I froze (呆住). I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing and I saw them pointing at my torn jeans. A 5. C 6. B 7. 由文章第一段“Previously, I felt proud of myself as a student from rural West Virginia. But at that moment, my pride sank. For a place that claims to welcome all, the Brown University has actually left its rural students feeling looked down upon.(以前,作为一名来自西弗吉尼亚州农村的学生,我为自己感到自豪。但那一刻,我的自尊心下降了。作为一个声称欢迎所有人的地方,布朗大学实际上让农村学生感到被轻视。)”可知,作者自豪感消失了,觉得自己被轻视了,所以感到沮丧和有挫败感,所以A项Frustrated(沮丧的;挫败的)符合。故选A项。 由文章第一段“But I was surprised that some used words like ‘hillbillies’ and ‘hicks’ (乡巴佬). (但我很惊讶,有些人使用了‘乡下人’和‘乡巴佬’这样的词。)”、第二段“By the third month of my first year, I was prepared to transfer out of Brown and finish college at a school where I would be surrounded by people like me, people from rural communities. Then I realized that this response was just the one that my tormentors expected.(到第一年的第三个月,我准备从布朗大学转学,在一所学校完成大学学业,在那里我会被像我一样的人包围,来自农村社区的人。然后我意识到,这种反应正是 所期望的。)”以及下段“Now I have decided to fight back. (现在我决定反击。)”可知,tormentors这里指那些说作者是“乡下人”和“乡巴佬”的一群人,所以现在作者决定反击他们。故选C项。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。由文章第三段“We must uplift other rural students in their academic and professional careers. We must be the ones to support each other.(我们必须提升其他农村学生的学术和职业生涯。我们必须相互支持。)”可知,作者建议农村学生要团结互助。故选B项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。由文章最后一段“For the non-rural students and faculty wondering how to support us, don’t stick to your stereotypes (刻板印象) that rural students are dumb, ignorant and unintelligent. On the contrary, we are valuable, deserving and hard-working individuals. Brown’s faculty and students should welcome and embrace our contributions.(对于那些想知道如何支持我们的非农村学生和教职员工来说,不要固守农村学生愚蠢、无知和不聪明的刻板印象。相反,我们是有价值、值得尊敬和勤奋的人。布朗大学的教职员工和学生应该欢迎并接受我们的贡献。)”可推测,作者认为布朗的农村学生很有价值,值得尊重。故选C项。 C Should doctors ever lie to benefit their patient — to speed recovery or to cover the coming of death? At times, they see important reasons to lie for the patient’s own sake; in their eyes, such lies differ sharply from self-serving ones. A. supportive B. indifferent C. opposed D. neutral 【答案】8. B 9. B 10. C 11. Should doctors ever lie to benefit their patient—to speed recovery or to cover the coming of death? Studies show that most doctors sincerely believe that the seriously ill patients do not want to know the truth about their condition, and that informing them risks destroying their hope, so that they may recover more slowly, or deteriorate (恶化) faster, perhaps even commit suicide (自杀). We are also learning that truthful information, humanly conveyed, helps patients cope with illness: help them tolerate pain better, need less medicine, and even recover faster after operation. Yet the public has every reason to know professional deception, for such practices are peculiarly likely to become deeply rooted, to spread, and to trust. D Mobile devices use facial recognition technology to help users quickly and securely unlock their phones, make a financial deal or access medical records. A. its convenience to unlock phones B. its easy access to our medical records C. its combination with deepfake technology D. its security concerning our financial deals 13. Measures have to be taken to improve facial recognition technology 【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. 【16题详解】 前文“Stress can improve your work performance, think more quickly and more efficiently.”(压力可以提高你的工作表现,思考更快更有效率)提到了压力在生活中带给我们的好处。下文“These high levels of stress and anxiety have harmful effects on both your mental health and your performance. ”(这些高水平的压力和焦虑对你的心理健康和表现都有害)讲到了压力和焦虑过大会对健康带来害处。所以空白处应为承上启下的作用。与前文表示转折,开启下文的话题,即压力有时还是会对健康带来害处的。选项E“That being said, sometimes stress can turn into anxiety, which is overwhelming.”(话虽如此,有时候压力会转化为焦虑,这是不可抗拒的)与文意相符,故选E。 【17题详解】 前文“Simply being aware of what is causing your anxiety -can help to lessen the effects. Try to take some time to reflect on what could be causing your anxiety.”(只要知道是什么引起你的焦虑,可以帮助减轻影响。 D“Once you address the causes, it puts you in a better position to treat it.”(一旦你解决了病因,你就能更好地治疗它)符合题意,故选D。 【18题详解】 前文“For example, if you’re someone that tends to be a bit of a perfectionist, you might experience higher levels of exam anxiety. ”(例如,如果你是一个有点完美主义的人,你可能会经历更高程度的考试焦虑)列举了会带来更大焦虑的一个情景,由此推知,下文应该承接前文讲述这种焦虑对你而言的意义。选项G“This often means you set yourself up for failure, due to the fear of never feeling “good enough”.”(这通常意味着你将自己置于失败或失望之中,因为你害怕自己永远不会觉得“足够好”)符合逻辑,故选G。 【19题详解】 前文“Most of the time, the key to exam anxiety is making full preparations. Make an early start on your revision. Starting 6 weeks before the exam is usually recommended.”(大多数时候,减少考试焦虑的关键是做好充分的准备。 下文“Take enough time to do yourself justice.”(给自己足够的时间来审视自己)说明我们要根据自己的实际情形来安排。 F“But this can change depending on where you feel you are in your studies and the study level.”(但这可能会因为你在学习中的感觉和学习水平而改变)与文意相符,故选F。 【20题详解】 下文“Studying constantly will make you worn out, and you may even feel burnt out —long before you even get the chance to sit the exam. Make sure that you have at least one day off from revision a week. ”(不停地学习会让你筋疲力尽,甚至在你有机会参加考试之前,你就会感到筋疲力尽。确保每周至少有一天不用复习)提到我们在学习疲惫的同时也要注意休息,即要劳逸结合。所以空白处应总说我们也不能忽略照顾自己的健康。选项A“Also, try not to neglect your self-care.”(而且,不要忽视你的自我照顾)符合题意,故选A。 (共 15 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) My job, as a driver, was to wait for the film crew. Trying to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears begin to well up in my eyes. Then I saw Ryan running towards me. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ That night, after the cheer at the football game, I found Ryan. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Then I saw Ryan running towards me. Struggling against my tears, l did want to express my gratitude to him but courage failed me. In total silence, I left the courtyard. That night, after the cheer at the football game, I found Ryan. I thanked him, giving the jacket back to him and telling him the cheer went great. Then gathering my courage, I sincerely apologized to him for my misconduct on the bus and thanked him again for his helping me out of the desperate situation.
