D Auggie’s Story Sleep I’d been reading for over an hour and sleep still didn’t come. It was almost two a. m. Everyone else was asleep. I had my flashlight (手电筒) on under the sleeping bag. Maybe the light was why I couldn’t sleep, but I was too afraid to turn it off. What had happened kept coming back to my mind. When we got back to the camp, no one noticed we’d been gone. The teachers and all the other kids were still watching the movie. They didn’t know how something bad had just happened to me and Jack. It’s so strange how that can be, how you could have a night that’s the worst in your life, but to everybody else it’s just a usual night. Amos, Miles and Henry brought us back to our seats. Then they returned to their own seats. In a way, everything was exactly as we had left it. The sky was the same. The movie was the same. Everyone’s faces were the same. Mine was the same. But something was different. Something had changed. Home “So, do you want to hear about the bad part or the good part first?” I asked Mum. “Whatever you want to talk about,” she answered. “Well, except for last night, I had a fantastic time,” I said. “I feel like they ruined (毁坏) the whole trip for me.” “No, sweetie. Don’t let them do that to you. You were there for more than forty-eight hours, and that awful part lasted one hour. Don’t let them take that away from you, okay?” “I know.” I nodded. “But do I always have to worry about bad guys like that? Like when I grow up, is it always going to be like this?” “There are always going to be bad guys in the world, Auggie,” she said, looking at me. “But I really believe there are more good people on this earth than bad people, and the good people watch out for each other and take care of each other. Just like Jack was there for you. And Amos. And those other kids.” “Oh yeah, Miles and Henry,” I answered. “They were amazing, too. It’s very strange because Miles and Henry haven’t even really been very nice to me at all during the year.” “Sometimes people surprise us,” she said, rubbing the top of my head. 12. Why couldn’t Auggie fall asleep? A. He kept thinking about something. B. He was doing bedtime reading. C. He was looking for his flashlight. D. He didn’t like his sleeping bag. 13. According to the first part, what was different at the camp? A. The sky. B. Auggie’s face. C. The movie. D. Auggie’s feeling. 14. Auggie was worried that ______. Alex noticed a folded piece of paper at the bottom of Leo’s lunchbox. “What’s that?” asked Daniel, another boy in their class. Before Leo could answer, Daniel grabbed the paper. He unfolded it and read in a loud voice: “Dear Leo, I hope you have a great day. Love. Mom.” Daniel snorted. “Your mom puts notes in your lunchbox?” “Yes,” Leo said. Daniel read the note again, to himself. It almost looked as if he wanted to keep it. “Give it back to Leo,” said Alex. “Well, who wants a note anyway?” Daniel said. “I do,” said Leo. Alex liked getting notes too. Daniel tossed the note and it fell to the floor. Alex picked it up. He handed it back to Leo, who put it into his pocket. On the bus that afternoon, Alex thought about what had happened. Alex’s older brother, Mateo, arrived home just after Alex did. “How was your day, little dude?” Mateo asked. “A boy in my class was mean to Leo,” Alex said. He explained the way Daniel had acted. Kind Offer D A theory of emotion Two scientists called Stanley Schachter and Jerome Singer developed the two-factor theory of emotion in 1962. They said that emotions are formed in two parts. First, the body has a physical response to a threat and then the mind considers the physical response as an emotion, which is then felt by the person. For example, imagine you are walking through a forest and you see a bear. Seeing it would probably start a physical response, such as your heart beating very fast and sweat breaking out. Your mind then decides that this is fear, which you feel as an emotion. A new study has suggested that the key to reducing feelings of anger is not venting (letting the angry emotions out) but doing calming activities such as yoga or meditation. The study was published in March by Sophie Kjaervik and Brad Bushman from Ohio State University in the US. They wanted to explore the popular theory that venting (expressing) anger is a good way of reducing it. Examples of venting anger include shouting or hitting something like a cushion, so that you let go of the emotion and therefore don’t feel it any more. The pair looked at 154 other studies on anger. These involved 10, 189 people, and included a variety of ages and backgrounds. In their study, Kjaervik and Bushman define anger as “an emotional response (反应) to a real or imagined threat (威胁)”. They used a theory of emotion (情绪假说) that says emotions are partly felt in your body and partly in your mind. The scientists looked at the other studies to see how different activities influenced anger. They found that activities such as running or boxing—which are often thought to be good for dealing with anger—weren’t very good at reducing it. In fact, some of these activities actually made it worse because they increased physical responses in the body that are linked to feeling angry. For example, they made people’s hearts beat faster. However, activities that decreased physical responses in the body did help to reduce feelings of anger. These included activities that slow the heart rate, such as deep breathing, meditation and yoga. Bushman says activities that increase physical responses may be good for heart health but are “definitely not the best way to reduce anger”. The team found jogging was most likely to increase anger. However, some heart-rate increasing activities—like ball games and team sports—could reduce anger. 25. What is the main finding of the new study? A. A new method of venting anger. B. A new method of reducing anger. C. Good activities to vent anger. D. Good activities to reduce anger. 26. What can we learn about calming activities? A. They can reduce feelings of anger. B. They can increase the heart rate. C. They are good for mind health. D. They are good for heart health. 27. According to Schachter and Singer’s theory, what happens first if you see a snake and feel afraid? A. You get the feeling of fear. B. You get the feeling of calm. C. Your heart beats fast. D. Your heart beats slowly. 28. The following sentence can best be put at the end of ________. They think this shows that fun or playful activities help to reduce negative feelings. A. Paragraph 1 B. Pour the hot water into the teapot and keep it for a few seconds, and then pour out water quickly. *Brew tea. Refill the teapot with hot water of a proper temperature, cover it and wait for a few minutes to keep the pleasant smell of the tea soup. Manners and rules: If you are the host, please: *Serve the tea with both of your hands. *Do not fill the teacup fully, since the hot tea soup might hurt the guests. *Keep an eye on the teacups of your guests and fill them in time. If you are the guest, please: *Receive the teacup with both hands when being served with tea. *Show your admiration and thanks to the host when smelling or drinking the tea soup. *Take a small mouthful of tea soup every time instead of drinking it up at a time. *Dress properly to attend the tea ceremony. 29. B Genevieve Moss has serious hearing loss. Her world has always been silent. Alone in a town in England, she often felt lonely. Then one day in April in 2021, something stopped Moss as she read the local newspaper. It was a photo of a tiny black-and-white cat. A family was looking for a home for their last newborn cat. Moss fell in love with it at first sight and contacted the family. Soon, the cat came to Moss’s house. Moss called the cat Zebby because his colors looked like those of a zebra. Moss once heard of studies showing that pets can help people deal with loneliness. However, she had no idea that Zebby would become her helper and her ears. From their first night together, Zebby has slept next to her. When he hears noises in the dark, he jumps up. “He became my night watch cat,” Moss said. “Sometimes he would run around the room until I woke up.” After several weeks, Moss noticed that whenever her phone rang or someone knocked at the door, Zebby would touch her lightly. It wasn’t long before the cat took on another task: collecting Moss’s mail. Now whenever he hears the mailbox being opened, he runs towards it, carries the mail in his mouth and drops it at Moss’s feet. This past May Zebby was named Britain’s National Cat of the Year by Cats Protection. According to the largest cat charity, Zebby beat out about 3,000 other cats because of the many ways he makes Moss’s life easier. He has had no training at all, but his natural abilities seem to have told him that his owner needs his help. “Zebby has made my house a home,” Moss said. “I can hardly imagine not having Zebby in my life now.” 32. In the evening, I went to the landing place. “Dear Father,” I said politely. “Have you found Belinda’s parents yet?” “Not yet, my dear.” He shook his head. I felt relaxed. I didn’t want to meet Belinda’s parents—they might be ten times as loud and bossy as she was. But Belinda had followed me. “Not yet?” she shouted. “Why not? I’ll send them a message! They’ll listen to me!” Belinda ran to the radio. She shouted into it so loudly that I had to cover all my four ears. “Mummy! Daddy! I’m on an awful spaceship full of purple people! Come and find me now!” “Poor Belinda!” my sister came and said. “Her parents must be missing her.” “Huh!” I snorted (发出哼声). “Missing her? You’re joking! Who would want such a bossy kid back? They probably lost her on purpose.” Belinda’s face clouded. I thought she was going to shout again, but she didn’t. Instead, something very strange happened — her eyes began to water! “Oh, help!” said Roa. “Is she dying?” I felt terrible. “Don’t die, Belinda! I didn’t mean it.” Then Belinda opened her mouth wide and shouted, “What if it’s true? What if they’ve gone away and left me here forever?” We were all so busy comforting Belinda that we didn’t notice the soft knock of a ship landing outside. We didn’t see two tall people come out of it until Belinda ran out in excitement. “Mummy! Daddy!” Belinda’s parents were even uglier than she was, but they looked polite. “Hello, dear,” the female said. “We’re sorry we kept you waiting.” We smiled as the three of them boarded their spaceship. “Goodbye!” shouted Belinda. “Goodbye! B One day in autumn Squire Gordon, my master, went on a trip into town. John, my caretaker, went with him. I pulled the cart. The weather was rainy and windy, but we travelled happily. Gordon’s business took a long time. We didn’t leave until late afternoon. The wind was then much higher. My master said to John, “I have never been out in such a storm!” Mr Gordon and John could not see well in the rain. We came to a wooden bridge. It was very nearly dark. We could just see that the water was over the middle of the bridge. But as that happened sometimes when the floods were out, master did not stop. The moment my feet touched the first part of the bridge, I felt sure there was something wrong. I dare (敢于) not go forward, and I made a dead stop. “Go on, Beauty,” said my master, and he gave me a touch with the whip (鞭子), but I dare not move. He gave me a sharp cut and I jumped, but I dare not go forward. “There’s something wrong, sir,” said John, and he got out and tried to lead me forward. “Come on, Beauty.” But I knew that the bridge was not safe. Just then the man on the other side saw us. “Hey! Halloo! Stop!” he cried. “What’s the matter?” shouted my master. “The bridge is broken in the middle, and part of it is carried away. If you go onto it, you’ll be into the river.” “Thank you for saving us, Beauty!” said John. He gently turned me round to the right hand road by the river side. It grew darker and darker, stiller and stiller. When we returned home the Squire told Mrs Gordon, “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.” John took me to the stable. Oh! We have seen many people from around the world express their love for Chinese culture in different forms. A growing number of foreigners have even chosen to live in China for its culture. Interested in Chinese classical literature, Canadian artist Brandon Collins-Green or Lin Buran in Chinese expresses his understanding of A Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin and Chinese poems through thousands of paintings. Often painting throughout the night, he has created more than 4,200 works. Living alone in the center of Nanchang, he has come a long way since he first came here in 2015 to study ancient Chinese literature. Brandon loves learning about the lifestyle of ancient Chinese people. “So far, I have read the novel three times, translated most of its poems, songs, lantern riddles (谜语), and dialogues into English, and completed over 1 million words of articles and 2,000 related paintings during my PhD studies,” said Brandon with pride and satisfaction. Timur Kuvatov, director-general and editor-in-chief of the Kazakhstan Today News Agency, is a Chinese kung fu fan. He has won kung fu championships a lot of times and also served as a coach for the Kazakhstan kung fu team. “Chinese kung fu is a treasure of Chinese culture. It is not just a sport but also reflects the Chinese way of dealing with people, their understanding of life, nature, and the world,” he said. Vincent Cazeneuve, known as Wensen Qi in Chinese, is a French artist devoted to lacquer (漆器) creation. He came to live in Chongqing in 2009. His works have been shown in art institutions both in and outside of China, and his fans have even collected some of them. What is the charm of Chinese culture that attracts these people? It lies in its richness and openness. Also its cultural background differences make foreigners curious about the lifestyles, way of thinking, and values of the country. 50. What has Brandon done to express his love for Chinese culture? A. He has created many famous Chinese poems. B. He has decided to move to China with his friends. C. He has written thousands of Chinese lantern riddles. D. He has translated part of Cao Xueqin’s novel into English. 51. As to Chinese culture, what is Timur Kuvatov interested in? A. Kung fu. B. Paintings. C. Literature. D. Lacquer creation. 52. What does the writer express through the stories of Brandon, Timur and Vincent? A. Chinese names are more attractive to foreigners. B. The influence of Chinese art proves greater abroad. C. Chinese culture is getting popular around the world. D. China is an ideal country for people from abroad to live. 53. What can be the best title for the passage? A. New look of traditional Chinese culture B. Charm of Chinese culture in foreigners’ eyes C. Development of Chinese culture in the West D. Culture differences between the East and West D Think about how much time you spent outside last week. Really “outside.” Walking from the car into the mall doesn’t count. Now think about how much time you spent indoors—on the Internet or playing video games or watching TV. You may say, “I play inside more than outside and I like to play games on the computer.” If so, it’s likely that you spent more time inside four walls than outside in fresh air. Kids today spend two fewer hours per week on sports and outdoor activities than kids did 20 years ago. That’s according to a University of Michigan study. Non-moving activities are more popular. The costs “include overweight, greater stress, higher rates of physical and emotional illness and less joy…,” says Richard Louv, writer of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder. Play is important, even for adults. Outdoor activity betters your senses. The next time you sit down to message your friends, take note of your senses during and after your texting. Then do the same experiment after you’ve done something outside. You will find being outdoors brings the senses to life. “Hiking, exploring, and fishing help hone all of your senses,” says Betsy Keller. She’s a professor of exercise and sports sciences at Ithaca College in New York. “Smell, sight... all of your senses are in use when you’re outside.” Outdoor play frees your mind. Are you stressed out? Having trouble devoting your mind to what you’re doing? Too much time indoors — away from the natural world — may be a cause. Louv uses a term to describe the set of problems caused by too much time indoors: nature deficit disorder. He says, “I use it to describe the price we pay for being so separated from nature.” Spending time outdoors brings you closer to the environment. When you’re out, breathe in fresh air, hear the leaves crackle underfoot and search cool birds and plants in the woods. It can help you feel more connected to the natural world. No woods nearby? Nature can be found right outside your back door or in your local park. So the next time you sit down to spend quality time with a video game, consider treating yourself to a little outdoor play instead. 54. How does the writer first introduce the topic of outdoor play? A. By presenting the results of a recent study. B. By introducing different kinds of outdoor play. C. By inviting the reader to think about his or her own case. D. By telling the reader outdoor play is good for body and mind. 55. Which sentence should go in the empty box in Paragraph 5? A. Outdoor play helps form relationships. B. Very curious, he begins to check it. The hawk seems to be in pain. One of its wings looks broken, touching the ground. Its eyes look scared. So Jack takes off his T-shirt and wraps (包裹) it carefully round the hawk. Then he carries it home. “I can’t take him into the house,” he thinks. “My mum doesn’t like animals in the house!” Thinking for a while, Jack decides to hide the hawk in the garden shed (棚子). He secretly puts the hawk down on the floor with his T-shirt. Looking at the hawk, he says, “It’s your home now. Call you Falco, OK?” After that, he goes back to his room. Unluckily, his parents are waiting for him. Finding his T-shirt missing, they get quite angry and don’t allow him to go out within a week. Jack goes to his room without any words, but he can’t fall asleep because he is worrying about Falco. In the early morning, Jack takes some bread to feed Falco and goes back to his room secretly. After breakfast, Jack goes to the garden shed, holding a small bowl of water. In the shed, he finds Falco sitting quietly in a corner, the bread still on the floor. Falco’s eyes are open, but not bright now. Jack puts the water in front of Falco. At first, Falco ignores (忽视) it, then he begins to drink. Jack sits quietly, looking at him, imagining Falco flying in the endless blue sky. But now he is trapped on the earth. “How can I help you return to the sky, Falco?” When Jack leaves the shed, his brother Jim is waiting for him outside. “What’s so interesting in the shed?” “Nothing.” “Tell me the truth, Jack. I think you haven’t forgotten my broken rocket!” Finally, Jack has no choice but to tell his brother the truth. Jim becomes very excited. “Jim, please don’t say anything to Mum and Dad. I can repair your rocket.” “My rocket isn’t important, Jack. But Falco is!” Then the brothers discuss how to feed Falco. They decide to get help from their friend Holly because she knows a lot about animals, birds and nature. Later, the brothers go to Holly. Holly advises them to feed some meat to Falco. Over the next few days, Falco gets much better. He always eats the meat Jack and Jim bring him from the kitchen. Jack even digs up worms in the park for Falco. Falco loves them! His feathers look bright and shiny, too. But he still can’t fly. One morning, Holly comes to see Falco. After watching it for a while, Holly says, “Falco is well enough to fly again!” Hearing this, they happily open the door, and watch Falco step into the sunlight slowly. Falco beats his wings and tries to fly in small circles, then in large ones. Suddenly, he makes a loud cry and flies away. Jack feels a bit sad, but he knows they are right. One evening, Jack and Jim are sitting in their room. It is a cool and quiet evening. Suddenly, he hears a cry from far away. A familiar (熟悉的) cry. A bird is flying in circles across the sky. Most Chinese idioms have four characters. For example, qingchuyulan (bluer than indigo), and houjibofa (success comes with time and effort). Terry and Kate are now reading stories behind the Chinese idioms they have learnt recently. In the Spring and Autumn period, Duke Huan of Qi led his army to help the State of Yan fight the enemies. One way is to use clean energy. Clean energy does not harm the Earth. It never runs out. Energy from the Sun is clean. We just need to learn how to get and store more of it. Plants use energy from the Sun. They use it to turn water and air into sugar. The sugar can be used as food. Scientists know a lot about how plants make food. Some scientists want to get energy from the Sun like plants do. They want to make a machine that can use sunlight to make fuel (燃料) from water. Water is made up of two different parts. Breaking water into its parts is hard. Plants do it all the time, though. It is part of how they make food. With energy from the Sun, the new machine will break water into its parts. One of the parts will be used as fuel. Then the fuel is used to make electricity (电). The electricity can power cars, houses, and so on. This fuel is better for the Earth than gasoline (汽油). It does not pollute the air. Plants can help us learn how to make clean energy! 76. How does the writer start this article? A. By telling stories. B. By asking questions. C. By comparing facts. D. Lucy Braun wondered that as a child. She showed great interest in plants at a young age. She often had energetic walks with her family through the nearby woods. Some plants and wildflowers seemed to shout at her with their wild colours. Others hid behind rocks. Lucy looked at the shapes of leaves as she walked in the woods. She kept a record of what she saw. She also learnt to draw what she saw. Then she could compare all kinds of plants. Later, Lucy grew more and more interested in botany, the study of plants. Branching Out At university, Lucy took classes in geology, or the study of rocks and minerals. Her work with geologists changed how she looked at the natural world. She continued her studies in botany as well. Lucy also took classes in ecology (生态学). Lucy believed that plant life in some are as was able to move to other places over time. In Full Bloom In 1917, Lucy began to teach botany at a university. She lived in a house near the woods. Lucy collected plants from all around the country. She took many photos of them, too. Colour photography was still new then. Because of that, people enjoyed her lessons and photos a lot. The ▲ of Labour (劳动) Later in her life, Lucy wrote many field guides. In 1950, she published her most important guide. It describes the plants in the forests across the country. Ecologists still use it to study changes in the forests over time. Today, Lucy has a few plants named after her. One of them is Lucy Braun’s snakeroot, which is now in danger. Lucy’s work in the protection of nature may help prevent its disappearance. He did a couple of quick wake-up exercises and then he went over to his mirror (镜子) and looked at himself. “Not bad, Stone, not bad,” he said to himself and smiled. Maybe he wasn’t ready for Hollywood, but with his dark brown eyes and his thick brown hair, he had the looks that turned girls’ heads. He moved closer to the mirror and smiled, checking his teeth. “Perfect,” he thought. “Good enough for a toothpaste ad.” As his eyes moved down to his strong arms, he smiled again. The hours he spent in the gym and doing sit-ups have paid off. But suddenly, the smile froze. His eyes moved from the upper part of his body down to his legs. His legs were short. Not just short, but far too short for his body. He had the upper body of a six-footer, but because of his legs he was much less than six feet! Six inches less! Sitting, he was as tall as almost anyone. Standing, he had to look up at most of the boys and even many of the girls. Why didn’t his legs grow with the rest of his body? He was one of the shortest boys in his class. He was the shortest in his own family, he was even shorter than his “little” sister—by three inches! Where did his legs come from? He certainly didn’t get them from his parents. They were both quite tall. Looking through old family photos, he found the answer. It was his grandfather on his mother’s side. His short legs were a gift from Grandpa Tuttle. Thanks a lot, Grandpa! Of course, the kids at school all noticed Jay’s short legs and they had a nickname (外号) for him: Stubs! Almost no one called him by his real name; they all called him Stubs. Stubs Stone, Jay didn’t like his nickname, but he had to accept it. He had no choice. But Jay couldn’t see in the mirror what his legs could do. They were quick and strong. He was the youngest player on the Brewer High football team. He could run faster than anyone else in the team and, like a rabbit, he kept going and going. Even at basketball, where the other players were much taller than him, they were still afraid of him because of his speed. Jay shook his head. “Stubs, Stubs Stone, the kid with stubby legs. Yeah, that’s me,” he said to himself with a little smile. Suddenly, he heard his mother’s voice. “Jay! It’s breakfast time!” 83. What did Jay do after he got up on the Monday morning? A. Each has a different function (功能). ●Head Feathers Head feathers come in all sizes. Tiny ones grow in overlapping (交叠的) rows to make a silky covering for a bird’s head. ●Primary Flight Feathers The outer wing feathers are long and strong. They are usually wider on one side. Their job is to push air as birds fly. ●Secondary Flight Feathers A row of smaller feathers grows on the bottom of the wing closer to the body. These also push air, so birds can fly. ●Tail Feathers Tail feathers help birds fly forward and stop during their flight. ●Down Feathers Down feathers grow under the other feathers. They are light and soft. Their job is to keep birds warm. ◆Flight Feathers push down on the air, so birds can fly. Feathers can move, so birds can change the shape of their wings. And feathers are light, so they don’t add too much weight. ◆Social Media Birds’ feathers tell the world who they are. Eye-catching feathers are good for attracting mates. ◆Protection Feathers of different colours and shapes act like camouflage (保护色), hiding birds from enemies. And often when an enemy tries to catch a bird, all it gets is a mouthful of tail feathers. ◆Keeping warm and cool Down feathers stop heat from getting in or out. So I made up my mind to go on a 3-month cycling journey to discover more. My cycling journey was very safe in China because I never had a moment in which I felt I was in danger. Wherever I went, there was always phone signal, and even WeChat pay. The beauty of nature was also fantastic. It simply took my breath away when I cycled on the way. With thick forests, blue lakes and green hills, there was so much to see. The food was another highlight of my journey. I got to taste local food in every place I went. My favourite was the spicy food in Sichuan. No matter how much I ate, I never got sick of having different Chinese foods. There were so many different choices. In addition, cycling in China cost less than I thought. I could even save some money during the trip to support a local charity. The best part was about people. I met people from different ethnic minorities (少数民族) across China and I was even invited to attend a wedding by Tibetan girls. The wedding was amazing, full of dancing, laughter and fun. One time I me t a group of Chinese men who were also travelling, but by motorcycle. They invited me to stay with them in the mountains. We cooked fish that we caught from the lake together. It felt like true freedom from the busy feeling of daily life. Another example was impressive. When I met a group of cyclists in their 60s, they cycled better than me. It really encouraged me to push myself and go farther every day. Also, an experienced cyclist saved me when I got a flat tire (爆胎). He helped fix my tire. By the end of my journey, I wanted to keep going. I felt like I could do it forever. It was truly an experience I will never forget. If anyone wants to explore in China, I would highly recommend going by bicycle. 91. What does the writer talk about in Paragraph 3? A. Personal safety. B. Different foods. C. Natural beauty. D. What is the best title for the passage? A. What a Pleasant Picnic! B. What Great People! C. What an Amazing Journey! D. What a Lucky Day! C “Take a seat, kids!” Miss King announced. As kids ran towards the campfire, Miss King turned to Quill, “I’ll leave for a while, just bring the kids watermelons and tell them a story.” “Sure.” said Quill, his hands becoming wet. Quill was good at showing kids how to climb rocks, but he was not a good storyteller. Quill asked in a low voice, “What kind of story do you like?” A boy named Caden answered, “A ghost story!” Alice rolled her eyes and other kids also shouted, “Quill will tell a lovely story, Caden.” “A ghost story!” Caden insisted. Just then, Quill felt a pull from Emma, the quietest in the group, “I’m afraid of ghost stories.” “What am I going to tell?” Quill thought and then said slowly, “I’m going to tell…a…a toast story.” Caden protested. “A toast story? I want a ghost story!” “You’ll see,” Quill said, “Long long ago, there was a piece of bread... named Bob.” Some kids smiled. Quill talked faster, “One day, Bob was put onto a wooden platform. Bob started crying.” “Bread can’t cry!” Caden shouted. Quill’s ears turned red. “What happened next?” Emma asked. Quill had no idea, but he quickly looked at Caden, “Cade n is going to tell us.” Caden sat up, “Am I?” “Yes, it’s a group story.” Quill answered. Caden said in a scaring voice, “Bob was sure this was the end of his day. Then, a long, shiny thing appeared over him.” “A knife!” Alice shouted. “Alice, it’s your turn.” Quill said. Alice added, “Then something dropped. The knife spread it all over Bob.” “Salad cream.” said Emma and pulled Quill’s T-shirt. Alice continued, “Suddenly, a giant hand lifted Bob towards a big hole. Bob screamed, ‘Help!’ ” Caden wanted to cut in, but Alice stopped him. Quill smiled at Emma. Emma took a deep breath, and said, “Bob screamed again. The hand was surprised and dropped Bob. She’s so happy, and the dog is happy, too! “I want to call him Eco,” says Holly. “Come here, Eco!” And Eco wags (摇摆) his tail. “That dog is your responsibility (责任), Holly,” says her father. “No problem!” Holly agrees. Before school, Holly takes Eco for his first morning walk. She feels very tired. It’s really cold and dark—and it’s so early! But Eco doesn’t mind. He runs, stops, runs again, sees a black cat, tries to run after it and nearly pulls Holly off her feet! Holly realizes it’s late when she gets back from the walk. When Holly takes Eco for his evening walk it’s quite dark outside. Holly feels nervous. She runs along the road with him, but it’s difficult. Because Eco often stops to study the bushes and trees. And he often tries to catch birds, or play with sticks and fallen leaves. A few days go by. Then… It’s raining outside. Eco enters…and the trouble starts. Eco’s dirty paws leave prints everywhere, on the floor, on the blanket, on the sofa…“Come here, Eco!” says Holly. She wants to stop him, but it doesn’t work. Holly gets really angry now. She realizes it’s time to train the dog. “He needs to know the rules.” Every day after school, Holly repeats simple orders to Eco. If he can do as ordered, he can get nice bones. A new study has found that other people’s likes and dislikes could be a reason. According to the research, people who eat vegetables and show a clear dislike for them can influence others. People may make facial expressions (面部表情) when eating. How does it affect a person watching them? A team of scientists in the UK did a study. They asked more than 200 young women to watch videos of other adults eating broccoli (西兰花). The people in the videos had different expressions while eating. They would smile, seem neutral (neither happy nor sad), or look disgusted. The study found that when people in the videos look disgusted while eating broccoli, people watching them began to like broccoli less. The opposite was not true, however. When someone had a smile while eating broccoli, people watching them did not like broccoli more. By watching others, humans learn which behaviors will be good for them. Scientists believe that people might avoid food that looks terrible. In this way, people can protect themselves from eating something bad or dangerous. The research focused only on adults, but the team believe that the results could also work for children. This means, if children see their parents not enjoying certain foods, including vegetables, they might not want to eat them either. How does the behavior of adults influence children’s choices of food? The team said they hope to understand more about it. This could help find ways to encourage children to eat more healthy foods. 109. What does the underlined word “disgusted” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Excited. B. Amazed. C. Unhappy. D. Untidy. 110. What’s the result of the study? A. People may prefer the food others like. B. Children dislike eating certain vegetables. C. Young women are easily affected by others. D. People may not choose the food others dislike. 111. The team may do further study on _________. A. the safety of children’s food B. the wish to understand children C. the influences of parents’ behavior D. the ways to produce healthy foods 112. What is the best title of the text? A. Videos affect choices of food B. Studies on vegetables help a lot C. Expressions prevent possible dangers D. Just like Jack was there for you. And Amos. And those other kids.” “Oh yeah, Miles and Henry,” I answered. “They were amazing, too. What if they’ve gone away and left me here forever?” We were all so busy comforting Belinda that we didn’t notice the soft knock of a ship landing outside. We didn’t see two tall people come out of it until Belinda ran out in excitement. “Mummy! Daddy!” Belinda’s parents were even uglier than she was, but they looked polite. “Hello, dear,” the female said. “We’re sorry we kept you waiting.” We smiled as the three of them boarded their spaceship. “Goodbye!” shouted Belinda. “Goodbye! B. Just getting outdoors does wonders. C. Nature can remind us of life beyond our worries. D. The outdoors is the best place to practise physical skills. 56. So Jack takes off his T-shirt and wraps (包裹) it carefully round the hawk. How can we stop air pollution? How can we live on a green planet? Jay Stone rolled out of bed. She quickly eats a piece of bread, takes her bag and jacket, and runs to school. What a busy morning! But that’s not all for looking after a pet dog. Why do some people like them but others don’t?
