In a heart-pounding display of courage and quick thinking, a 65-year-old crane operator became an unexpected hero as he rescued a man trapped on top of a towering building engulfed in flames.
Glen Edwards, a crane operator from Egham, was expressing his gratitude after a tense rescue operation in Reading last Thursday. Edwards found himself in a challenging situation as he navigated circling winds to save a man trapped by smoke and flames on a building. The dramatic rescue unfolded amid thick black smoke, making visibility nearly impossible
When the alarm sounded, Edwards, who had a concrete skip on his crane, wasted no time the moment he spotted the distressed man waving his coat. Employing his experience and knowledge of the area, Edwards attached a metal cage to the crane, carefully considering his options for the rescue. However, the challenging conditions, with smoke sheltering his view, added an extra layer of difficulty to the operation.
With a colleague providing guidance and a concerned crowd watching from below, Edwards skillfully operated the crane to rescue the man. The onlookers erupted in cheers and applause as the man was safely lifted to the ground.

The heartwarming part of this story is the overwhelming support Edwards has received from well-wishers. A fund-raising page was set up to “buy Edwards a beer as a sign of gratitude,” initially aiming for £5,000 but now standing at an impressive ₤9,100. The community’s response has left Edwards deeply moved. He stated, “It means a lot; some of the comments have been absolutely fantastic.”

Children of all ages gathered in New York City recently for the International Toy Fair. Hidden among already popular toys were new, high-tech educational products. Toymakers are working to create these products for improving a child’s emotional intelligence.
Companies showed off their products last week at New York’s Jacob Javitz Convention Center.
PleIQ is a set of plastic toy blocks. It uses visual reality technology to teach words, numbers and other things. Edison Duran directs the company that makes PleIQ. She showed people at the toy fair how virtual images appear on the blocks when they are held in front of a tablet camera. PleIQ has children act as teacher or guide to a companion character.
On the other side of the convention center Karen Hu from another company demonstrated an educational robot called Woobo. The robot comes programmed with educational games and activities. Children use its touch-screen face to get them started. Hu described how the robot can help a child who has autism (自闭症). “The child can communicate with Woobo and follow some of the instructions Woobo is giving because he thinks of this as a companion instead of a parent or someone else telling him about certain things.”
At the EQtainment stand, sales director Jonathan Erickson explained the company’s toys. “The purpose of all of our products is to develop emotional and social intelligence.” he said. Erickson showed off a board game called “Q’s Race to the Top”. He said the game got his 4-year-old daughter to open up. “The biggest thing is her talking. And that’s the key of all this—getting her feelings expressed out. Like, ‘Hey, what does it feel like to be sad? Or how does it feel like to be happy?’”
It remains to be seen whether a game or toy can improve emotional intelligence. But toymakers are doing what they can to help parents in their efforts to raise well-rounded children.
8 How does PleIQ instruct children to learn?
A. By playing the role of a companion. B. By giving direct guidance.
C. By taking photos with a camera. D. By presenting visual images.
9. What can be inferred about Woobo from Paragraph 4?
A. It is programmed to replace teachers. B. It may be good company for kids.
C. It can get started automatically. D. It is intended to design games.
10. What does Jonathan Erickson think of his toys?
A. They are quite easy to operate. B. They can teach children numbers.
C. They help kids express themselves well. D. They can show their emotions clearly.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Toys are made to help to build emotional intelligence.
B. Educational toys sell well at the International Toy Fair.
C. Toymakers are making profits in education.
D. Children celebrate the International Toy Fair.

What images does science conjure up (使浮现) in your mind? You may well be visualizing a laboratory equations (方程式) written on a blackboard. Figures are surrounded by glassware filled with colored liquids. Maybe someone is studying the world under a microscope.
But what this scene fails to show is that science isn’t about labs, equipment or highly trained professionals. It is not even a body of knowledge locked away in great minds or kept within textbooks and journals. Instead, it is about having a curious, creative, critical and evidence-based mindset, which means anyone who uses the scientific method can and should consider themselves a scientist. Indeed, many a discovery has been made by amateur scientists.
Amateur scientists are helping to shape science. In January 2023 a new study confirmed the theory of amateur archaeologist Ben Bacon who concluded 20,000-year-old cave markings were a lunar calendar. He spent hours decoding (破译) the mysterious writing system, which may predate other similar record-keeping systems by at least 10,000 years.
Astronomy has a long history of encouraging input from nonprofessional scientists. Brother and sister team William and Caroline Herschel are among the most well-known. Back down on the ground there is still plenty for the amateur to explore. Mary Anning is one of the most notable amateur Earth scientists.
In the early 19th century, Mary Anning unearthed fossils on the beaches of Lyme Regis, Dorset. Despite her limited education, she read as much scientific literature as she could get her hands on and produced detailed technical drawings to record her finds. Unfortunately, the influential Geological Society of London did not allow female members. So Anning was forced to sell her finds to “gentlemen” geologists who passed her work off as their own.
12. Why does the author mention the images in paragraph 1 ?
A. To explain what science is.
B. To show people’s general opinion of science.
C. To introduce how scientists experiment.
D. To stress the importance of having scientific equipment.
13. What does the author think of scientific discovery?
A. It relies on labs and equipment. B. It is mainly done by professionals.
C. It requires an innovative mindset. D. It is irrelevant to amateur scientists.
14. How is paragraph 3 mainly developed?
A. By making a comparison. B. By following time order.
C. By giving an example. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
15. Why did Anning sell her finds to other geologists?
A. She sold them for money. B. She considered them unimportant.
C. She wanted to pursue higher education. D. She experienced inequality in the scientific field.

【1题详解】
推理判断题。根据“James by Percival Everett”部分中的“Celebrated author Percival Everett gives us Huckleberry Finn from Jim’s point of view. It’s far from a straight re -telling, though. Instead, Everett (but off his 2001 book Erasure being adapted into the film American Fiction) uses the beats of the original story to give us a send up of language and race. (著名作家Percival Everett从Jim的角度给我们带来了《哈克贝利·费恩历险记》。然而,这远不是一个直接的重新讲述。相反,Everett (2001年出版的《擦除》被改编成电影《美国小说》)利用原著故事的节奏给我们一种语言和种族的警示。)”可推测,Everett的作品具有显著的影响力。故选D。
【2题详解】

In January 2023, a new study confirmed the theory of amateur archaeologist Ben Bacon who concluded 20,000-year-old cave markings were a lunar calendar.

根据上文“Although there are many stories about how hula was invented, some believe that Pele, Hawaii’s goddess of fire and volcanoes, wanted her sisters to dance for her. According to the story, only her sister Hi’iaka danced for the goddess.(虽然有很多关于呼啦舞是如何发明的故事,但有些人相信火与火山的女神Pele希望她的姐妹们为她跳舞。根据这个故事,只有她的妹妹Hi'iaka为女神跳舞)”可知此处要表达的是Hi'iaka是第一个表演呼啦舞的人,由此可推理出下文说的是她的妹妹Hi'iaka是第一个为女神表演呼啦舞的人,与F项“This sister is said to have been the first person to perform hula.(据说这位妹妹是第一个表演呼啦舞的人)”表达的含义一致,故选F项。
【18题详解】

When dancers perform hula kahiko, they dance to traditional musical instruments, such as rattles and drums.(Huka kahiko使用与古代夏威夷人相同的传统动作和乐器。当舞者表演huka kahiko时,他们会随着传统的乐器起舞,比如拨浪鼓和鼓)”以及“Modern hula is danced to modern Hawaiian music, which often features the ukulele, an instrument that looks like a small guitar(现代呼啦舞随着现代夏威夷音乐起舞,这种音乐经常以尤克里里为特色,尤克里里是一种看起来像小吉他的乐器)”可知此处要分别介绍了古代夏威夷人的呼啦舞与现代呼啦舞,可推理出空白处总体说明有两种类型的呼啦舞,与A项“There are two types of hula.(有两种类型的呼啦舞)”表达的含义一致,故选A项。
【20题详解】
根据下文“Modern hula is danced to modern Hawaiian music, which often features the ukulele, an instrument that looks like a small guitar. Dancers wear skirts made from leaves and bracelets made from flowers.(现代呼啦舞是用现代夏威夷音乐跳的,这种音乐经常以尤克里里为特色,尤克里里是一种看起来像小吉他的乐器。舞者穿着由树叶制成的裙子和由花制成的手镯)”可知现代呼啦舞是用现代夏威夷音乐跳的,使用一种看起来像小吉他的乐器,这是现代音乐的特征。可推理出此处说的是hula auana被认为是现代呼啦舞,与C项“In contrast, hula auana is considered modern hula.(相比之下,hula auana被认为是现代呼啦舞)”表达的含义一致,故选C项。

【答案】Nowadays, our class is discussing whether or not we should create a parents’ group. As for this issue, different students have different opinions.
Some students believe that we should have parents’ groups, saying that it is easy for parents to talk to teachers any time they want. Moreover, parents can know the students’ homework and marks in time. Others think otherwise. Firstly, parents’ groups would influence parents’ work. Secondly, students might feel like they are always being watched and don’t have any free space.
In my perspective, we should have parents’ groups. As the saying goes, “Parents are the children’s first teachers.” It is the parents’ responsibility to know their children’s performance. In closing, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and I am in favor of having parents’ groups.
