Ways to Improve Vocabulary in Just One Day
The average American has a vocabulary in the thousands. Try these tricks to make sure yours builds up.
Watch movies
“If you see the movie version of your favourite book you’re likely to have a deeper understanding and knowledge of the words in it,” says Neuman, professor of Childhood and Literacy Education at New York University. “Seeing and reading something on the same topic is really important.”
Read magazines
If you want to improve vocabulary, don’t just flip through your favourite magazine, really read it.
Listen to how words sound
Many people won’t remember tricky words unless they come across them frequently. But if you hear a word that you think sounds interesting, you become word conscious (有意识的) and start using it yourself, says Neuman.
Join a book club
“Book clubs are a wonderful strategy to learn new words” says Neuman. Not only will it force you to set aside time in your day to read, but it’s also a good way to discover books you might not normally be drawn to.
Listen to the radio
Those types of programs can expose you to topics you may not be familiar with. Don’t miss these middle school vocabulary words adults still don’t know.
Pay attention to your surroundings
Next time walk down a busy street or take a walk in the park, try to describe what you’re seeing as much as possible inside your head.

The introduction of the iPad, with its touch screen technology, has allowed even very young children to take advantage of a computer. So what if all children in the school were given an iPad to use in class and take home with them?
Anne Laure Bazin works in a school where every child, teacher and teaching assistant is given a free iPad to use in and out of lessons. The main advantage of everyone having an iPad has been the improvement in communication. Documents can be emailed straight over to workmates during a meeting. Children hand in their homework by e-mail or through the school’s learning environment. Teachers now take the register using the iPad, which means that there is a centralized record of which children are in school, and which classroom they are in.
The use of iPads has encouraged greater sharing of resources among teachers. All communication with parents is now done by e-mail. Working as a group in class is much easier as children can share documents. The whole class can look at one child’s book by attaching the iPad to the whiteboard. Has forgotten the textbook. The teacher can take a photograph of the relevant and send it to the student in class.
While the use of the iPad in schools has revolutionized the way children are taught, it hasn’t completely replaced more traditional methods of teaching. Worksheets are still used in class as some children prefer the contact. The children all have a textbook and exercise books. In Anne Laure’s school, Parents feared that the iPads would replace and the children would lose handwriting skills. Anne Laure says, “The teachers are not ready to let go of the traditional style of teaching. We have welcomed the iPads in so much as they help communication and widen the resources that can be used. But we are not ready to let go of paper yet. The children themselves still value their exercise books and depend on them for revision.”
24. What can teachers do when everyone uses an iPad in school?
A. They can have deep conversations with students.
B. They can have more time to prepare the lessons.
C. They can learn more about students’ activities at home.
D. They can communicate with their workmates more conveniently.
25. What is an advantage of using iPads in the classroom?
A. It saves students bringing the textbooks.
B. It reduces parents’ worry about teaching.
C. It improves the relationship between teachers.
D. It makes sharing information easier.
26. What is parents’ attitude towards the use of iPads in the classroom?
A. Worried. B. Uncaring. C. Annoyed. D. Positive.
27. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Teachers prefer traditional methods of teaching.
B. The iPads won’t take the place of printed materials.
C. More and more schools are using iPads.
D. Exercise books are more valuable now.

Chinese high schools differ from American high schools in many ways.
The class structure (结构) is different. Students have each class in a different room with a different set of classmates in America, while Chinese students remain in the same classroom all day.
In addition to the structural difference, Chinese high schools also differ from American high schools in the college application process (大学申请过程) that students undergo.
In the United States, colleges use an application system that considers a student's high school grades, standardized test scores, after-school activities. teacher recommendations, and often a personal interview. Usually, the last few months of senior year has little work.
The Chinese college admission process is very different. College acceptance is depended on standardized examinations held once a year at the end of each school year. Although students take tests at the end of their first and second years of high school, the test that really matters is the exam taken at the end of their final year of high school.
The main way in which Chinese and American high schools differ is in the way information is taught.
In America, personal expression is valued heavily. Many classes are based on discussion of the material, and teachers expect students to join in this dialogue, so the classroom can become noisy. Classroom participation (参与), meaning how a student contributes to the class discussion, is an important part of a student's grade, so a student who works hard but never speaks up could receive a lower grade as a result.
Chinese classrooms do not place this same importance on classroom participation. Class is based on the teacher talking and the students listening quietly. Respect (尊敬) for teachers is far more important. When a student is asked to speak, he or she is expected to stand. This classroom is more formal and respectful. But it also means less communication between the teacher and students.
28. What is the class structure for students in America?
A. They have one teacher. B. They study in the same classroom.
C. They have the same classmates. D. They have different classmates and classrooms.
29. What are paragraphs 4、5 mainly about?
A. Different class structures.
B. The way information is taught.
C. How to get high marks in the final year of high school.
D. The differences of the college application process between America and China.
30. How can a student most probably get a high mark in an American class?
A. By being noisy B. By being active in class discussion.
C. By having respect for teachers. D. By working hard and not speaking.
31. How does the author develop the text?
A. By listing numbers. B. By following time order.
C. By presenting research findings. D. By comparing the differences.
D
It is often said the laughter is the best medicine. But researchers at the University of Oxford think the ability to belly laughs (捧腹大笑) was unique to early humans. This, they believe, made our ancestors (祖先) able to form much larger groups.
The researchers first tested the pain thresholds (临界值) of some volunteers. They divided them into two groups. One group was shown15 minutes of comedy videos, while the other was shown boring programs.
Through this experiment, the researchers found that those who had recently experienced belly laughs were able to withstand (忍受) up to 10% more pain than they had done before watching the videos. To their surprise, the scientists also found that the other group was less able to withstand pain after watching 15 minutes of the “boring” programs.
Professor Robin Dunbar of Oxford University, who led the research, believed that belly laughs release chemicals called endorphins (安多芬) into the body which make us feel less painful.
However, not all comedy programs had such effects, according to Prof Dunbar. For example, though clever stand-up comedy was found to be enjoyable, it had no effect on raising pain thresholds. “Things that worked very well were interesting comedies such as Mr. Bean. Situation comedies such as Friends also seemed to be particularly successful,” he added.
In order to measure (测量) endorphin levels, the researchers put a bag of ice on the volunteers’ arms to see how long they could withstand them. They found that the greater the increase in pain thresholds, the greater the amount of endorphins produced.
The purpose of Prof Dunbar’s study was not to develop a new treatment. Instead, it was to study the role of laughter in the forming of human societies two million years ago.
“The next stage will be to see whether laughing really allows people to keep together and work as a group better and be more friendly towards each other. If that is the case, then it may explain why some two million years ago, the first humans were able to form large communities of up to 100,” Dunbar added.
32. Prof Dunbar’s study was to __________.
A. test the pain thresholds of humans
B. measure the endorphin levels while laughing
C. develop a new kind of medicine that reduces pain
D. explore the influence of laughter in forming human societies
33. In order to withstand more pain, we’d better _________ .
A. watch some scary films B. watch some beautiful pictures
C. watch some boring programs D. watch some comedy videos
34 The meaning of the underlined word “release” in the passage may be ________.
A. look out B. stand out C. find out D. give out
35. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. More experiments about laughter will be carried out.
B. Laughter makes people keep together and work as a group.
C. People who laugh a lot are more friendly towards each other.
D. The first humans could only form small communities less than 100.

Now, he’s also fighting hunger in his community. He partnered with food charities and a relief group. Together, they collected more than 100,000 meals. Orion’s other passion is reading. The Race to 500,000 Books combined the things he cares about. He started a book donation activity to collect books and share them with people who needed them. Orion met his goal. He collected half a million books in just a few months. Are you inspired by Orion? Maybe you can start a book donation activity in your community. Orion has a few tips. First, choose a goal. Think about the people you want to help. Then work out the details. Figure out how you’ll get the books to people in need. Then get your community involved! Remind people of the impact they can make when they work together. Finally, stay true to your mission. If it gets tough, just think of those you are trying to help.

“Book clubs are a wonderful strategy to learn new words,” says Neuman.

In America personal expression is valued heavily.
28 What is the class structure for students in America?
【答案】28. D 29. D 30. B 31.

However not all comedy programs had such effects, according to Prof Dunbar.
34. The meaning of the underlined word “release” in the passage may be ________.
A. look out B. stand out C. find out D. give out
35. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. More experiments about laughter will be carried out.
B. Laughter makes people keep together and work as a group.
C. People who laugh a lot are more friendly towards each other.
D. The first humans could only form small communities less than 100.
【答案】32. D 33. D 34. D 35. A

【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Through this experiment, the researchers found that those who had recently experienced belly laughs were able to withstand (忍受) up to 10% more pain than they had done before watching the videos.(通过这个实验,研究人员发现,那些最近经历过捧腹大笑的人比看视频之前多承受了10%的痛苦。)”可知,那些捧腹大笑的人比看视频前多承受10%的疼痛,结合“To their surprise, the scientists also found that the other group was less able to withstand pain after watching 15 minutes of the “boring” programs.(令他们惊讶的是,科学家们还发现,另一组人在看了15分钟的“无聊”节目后,忍受疼痛的能力下降了。) ”可知,研究同时发现,那些看了“节目”的人承受疼痛的能力下降了,由此可知,我们要想多承受疼痛,应该看一些喜剧视频。故选D项。
【34题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线单词后的“chemicals called endorphins (安多芬) into the body which make us feel less painful.(一种叫做安多芬的化学物质进入体内,使我们感觉不那么痛苦。)”
根据尾段中的“The next stage will be to see whether laughing really allows people to keep together and work as a group better and be more friendly towards each other.(下一个阶段将是看看笑是否真的能让人们团结在一起,更好地作为一个团队工作,彼此之间更友好。)”可知,接下来将会研究大笑是不是能让人们团结在一起,更好地作为一个团队工作,以及彼此之间会不会更友好,由此可知,接下来对大笑进行的研究会有很多。故选A项。
