(2024高三TOP二十名校质检)It was the start of a new week. Since my past weekend had been busier than a regular weekend, I was more tired tan usual. Worse still, it was raining.
I complained about my misfortune. This day was terrible! What an awful morning! Things were so bad for me! This weather was miserable, and so was I!
As I stepped out the front door, a strong wind blew my umbrella inside-out. I decided to run through the cold downpour to the car,but I didn’t see the ankle-deep puddle(水坑)until I stepped into it. Time for more complaining.
Now I was damp and late for work. The traffic on the expressway was really heavy. A car behind me warned me-someone thought I wasn't going fast enough. I would have listened to the traffic report on the radio, but it was broken. How poor I was!
Finally, after managing to navigate my route through the traffic on the exit ramp(匝道),I decided I would stop at that little coffee shop near my company for a cup of coffee---I was going to make that a large cup of coffee. The line of cars at the drive-through was stretching around the parking lot, so I figured it would be faster if I just got out and went inside.
I sighed impatiently as I waited in line until I reached the counter where I ignored the friendly greeting from one of the clerks---I was too busy with my complaining---and ordered my favorite: a caramel hazelnut coffee, extra cream, no sugar. My order was served, and I moved to the register. That's when I realized I had left my wallet at home! This added to my misfortune. I tried to explain my situation to the cashier(收银员),hoping to find a solution.

(河南省2024高考备考精英联赛调研卷)
I am terrified of heights. It's not really a fear of being in a high place. Rather, it is the view of a long way to fall, of rocks far below me and no firm wall between me and the edge. Despite my fear, two summers ago I somehow found myself climbing to a high place. Most of our high school had come along on a day trip to the Boquerón, a gorgeous, lush spot in the foothills of Peru. Its prime attraction is the main waterfall, about 100 feet high, that thunders into a crystal clear pool feeding the Aguaytia River.
After eating our sack lunches within sight and sound of the fall, many of us wanted to make the climb to an area above it. We knew others had done so on previous trips. We went along the base of the hill until we reached the climb. It stopped me in my tracks.
The climb ascended steeply above us. Along the right edge, the jungle hugged the rocks;passage through its trees did not look feasible. The majority of my view was filled with rocks.Looming high to the sky, the boulders rose in a tiered manner. Peering back down toward the river, I saw a steep slope of rocks all the way to the water. All I could think about was how far it would be to fall.
My tense thoughts were interrupted by the realization that my friends were already beginning to climb! My anxiety increased as I watched them. Looking back, my friend Seth was behind me. Do I turn back? My whole being shouted, "Yes!" Will I regret it later? I really want to get to the top, but···

(2024新课标全国Ⅰ卷)I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought.
That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn't heard of the bus station. I thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car.
Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue (队列) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face. "We made it," he said.
Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.
At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: "Out of order. Sorry."

(2023浙江高考)I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired? Or too thirsty?
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away.
Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout,I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say goodbye.”

“Hurry up you guys, or you’ll be late for school!” called Mom. We dashed downstairs and had a quick breakfast. I was eating my favorite — very sweet cereal, and Sara was having eggs. When I rose to have my bowl washed, Mom whispered, “You know you need to be cautious today when you’re walking Sara to school. It’s your job to assure me she gets there all right.” Then she cast me a very serious look. I thought to myself, wondering why Mom was making such a big deal out of this. I was Sara’s first day of kindergarten, but I could manage it. It wish Mom wouldn’t treat me like such a baby.
“Goodbye, Mom!” Sara yelled. She ran out the door, and I went behind her.
“Be careful!” my mom yelled.
“I will!” I said back and ran outside. Sara was skipping down the front walkway to the sidewalk.
I grabbed Sara’s hand. “Are you eager and excited for your first day of school?” I asked, trying to sound like a grown-up. Sara smiled and nodded her head yes. Meanwhile, my mom was staring at us through the window. “When will she stop treating me like a little kid?” I thought. “I’ll show you the way.” I said, I felt proud to be the elder sister. We walked past beautiful gardens and big, leafy trees. Suddenly, I heard a growl and saw a dog walking towards us. He was big and fierce looking with long sharp teeth. “GRRR!!!” the dog growled. I didn’t see its owner or anyone who could help us. My hand became sweaty and Sara stopped walking. “I’m scared, Julie,” she said. I didn’t want her to be scared. I wanted to seem brave. “Everything will be okay,” I said.
“GRRR!!!” The dog stepped closer and we could see it was the size of a small horse — with red eyes and sharp teeth.

Most of us never forget the person that was there for us in our darkest times. Apparently, penguins (企鹅) don’t either.
On a typical day, off the coast of a small Brazilian island, Joao Pereira de Souza headed out fishing. He was disheartened to find that an oil leak had polluted the waters. Staring out at the oily waves, he decided it was not a good day to fish. But walking on the beach that day, he found a struggling penguin, covered in oil and starving.
Joao took the penguin home, and spent a whole week gently cleaning it and nursing it back to health. He named it Dindim, a Portuguese word meaning “ice pop”. Dindim is a Magellanic penguin, a species known for living in the seas of South America. In order to breed (繁殖), they must return to Patagonia, 5,000 miles from Joao’s home.
After a week of rehabilitation (康复), Joao patiently took Dindim back to the sea and taught it how to swim again. When Dindim could swim quite well, Joao took it out into the sea by boat and dropped it off to encourage it to swim back to its home. But when he was back to shore, he found the penguin waiting for him. Joao made two more attempts later, but each time the bird would just return to Joao’s home. It seemed that Dindim had already formed a family bond with Joao and wouldn’t leave.
Joao had no choice but to keep the little creature. During the following months, Dindim would follow behind Joao to fish on the coast joyfully. Dindim also liked to lie on Joao’s lap, letting Joao give it showers, allowing Joao to feed it fish and to pick it up. Joao and his family enjoyed the company of Dindim. But deep inside Joao’s heart, he knew Dindim belonged to the wild. Gradually, the hot summer days witnessed the change of its new feathers. Was it time to say “goodbye”?

My Father’s Son
It’s hard being an astronaut’s son. I often wonder how my father ever had a son like me. I mean he’s so special and so good at everything he does. But I’m just an average eleven-year-old kid.
Nowadays I dream about being a famous writer, but I used to dream about doing something spectacular to impress my father and make him proud of me — something like rescuing a child from a burning building or chasing a robber away from an old lady.
I was daydreaming in school one morning. I was daydreaming about being some kind of hero when my friend Ellen reminded me of my English teacher’s announcement about a Father’s Day essay contest.
“I hope we have a winner right here in my English class,” she said. “There are three prizes for each of you.”
When I got home, I kissed my mom quickly. Then I went upstairs to my room and sat down with a pen and a pad of paper. I started to think about what I would write.
How did I see my father? Hmm.
I saw him teaching me how to use a bat and how to throw a baseball.
I remembered how he hugged me for hours when my dog Spotty was hit and killed by a car. And I remembered how he sat and tried to explain death to me when Grandpa Bob died.
These were the things I was going to write about my dad. To me, he wasn’t just a world-famous astronaut. He was my dad.
I wrote about all these memories and put them in my essay. I handed it in the next day and was surprised to find out that the winning essays would be read in the auditorium on Thursday night. All the parents and students were incited.
My parents and I went to school Thursday night. One of our neighbors said, “I bet you’ll win the contest, David. I bet you wrote what it’s like to be the son of an astronaut, and you’re the only one in town who could write about that.”

In the first and second grade in junior high school, I was extremely shy, I had friends, but it just wasn’t in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people’s conversations.
I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy, I often imagined that I was the main character in the story. My teacher, Mrs. Sather, always encouraged me to write more and be myself. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with great efforts. I thoughts he was one of the first people to see my inner strength.
One day, she showed us a play she had written and announced that our class was going to perform it. “I’ll begin to choose all the performers tomorrow” she said, “I need someone who is not afraid to be onstage in front of a lot of people to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody wants to try?” A few excited hands shot up -- mine, of course, was not one of them and Mrs. Sather smiled. “We’ll talk more about it later,” she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.
“I will never do that,” I thought. But after rereading the play, I was deeply attracted by the story and couldn’t help imagining myself to be the main character Dorothy. There seemed to be a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear. However, I still felt shy and could never picture myself acting in a play in front of two hundred people. Having struggled for a few minutes, I still did not know how to make the decision.

(2023·黑龙江哈尔滨·哈九中校考二模)On a beautiful Thursday this April, Amy and Alan Green took their daughter Abbey out for a walk in the neighborhood. On their way back, Amy picked up a kite for Abbey from the Dollar Tree, blue with rainbows—there are a lot of rainbows decorating homes around the region these days, which helps make life less dull during the coronavirus pandemic.
In the afternoon, Abbey took the kite out for its first flight. At first, the wind was perfect. It took the kite high in the sky. However, suddenly, the wind became much stronger and pulled the kite out of Abbey’s hands in a moment. It flew farther and farther and finally got stuck on the power lines next to a big tree, wrapping itself over and over again around the wires. Since the kite was too high for them to reach, the Greens could do nothing about it. Worried less about the kite than the danger it might present to the lines, Amy called National Grid (国家电网) to report the incident.
About one hour later, Mike, a worker from the power company arrived. He carefully removed the kite line from the wires. After about 10 minutes’ effort, he successfully freed it. But unfortunately, as the kite was wrapped so tightly, there was some unpreventable damage. Still, he gave it back to Alan Green. As he was leaving, he noticed Abbey taking the kite to the backyard. Out of curiosity, he stood there for a while to see how the girl would deal with it. Surprisingly, she dug a hole and buried the kite in a shoebox. Even though he could not see the girl’s face clearly, he knew exactly how sad Abbey was. He really felt bad for her. And it was at that moment that he decided to do something.

At age 10, I stood in front of my new class, my new classmates looking at me with mild interest as my teacher introduced me. I joined in the middle of the school year. There were 41 students in my new class. I was the 42nd.
All my classmates sat in pairs except for this one girl, Kate. I went and sat down next to her and gave her a small, uncertain smile. She smiled in return. The class started and we didn’t talk until lunch time. At lunch time, I pulled out my lunch box, packed by my mother. It had fried rice with home-made cakes and a small box of fruits. Clearly my mom had spent time packing this yummy lunch. This girl took out a small box with bread butter inside. In India, it’s pretty rare for kids to just get bread butter for lunch. The only time I had bread butter for lunch was if my mom was unwell. So I thought that was what the problem here was. I offered her a small part of my lunch and forgot all about it. The next day, she again had bread butter. Well, I thought, her mother might have fallen ill, so she was taking time to recover. I again offered her a part of my lunch. This went on for a week. Then one day, I asked the one question that I shouldn’t have. “Is your mom not well?”
In fact, I wasn’t prepared for the answer. Later, I knew that her mother, who worked in a supermarket, was in poor health. She constantly stayed at home with no income. I didn’t know what to do. So I did the most obvious thing. I went home and told my mom that my lunch wasn’t enough and I still felt hungry after eating it. My mom started packing a bigger lunch. And in school, I’d tell Kate that my mom had packed me a lunch too big, so could she please help me finish it? Then I asked her what her favorite dish was. “Naan,” she whispered.

Eight-year-old Kayzen Hunter visits Waffle House every weekend to have breakfast with his family. They always choose to sit in Devonte Gardner’s section, because they get the best care from their favorite waiter.
The family instantly felt close to Gardner, who would greet Kayzen with a high-five every time they entered the restaurant. Kayzen never needed to say his order again, because Gardner already knew it by heart. The family really believes he’s the nicest person ever, which is why they were eager to help him when they learned his story.
One day, while dining at the restaurant with his grandfather John Donofrio, Kayzen discovered that behind Gardner’s kindness and warmth were a lot of personal struggles. At the time, Gardner asked the pair if they knew where he could buy an affordable car to use to get to work. It turned out the waiter had been walking a long distance to and from work every day. He and his family, consisting of a wife and two young daughters, were living in a motel (汽车旅馆) room after their apartment became unsuitable to live in. They had been living in a motel for months.
Kayzen couldn’t erase his friend’s story from his mind, so he immediately told his mom about it when he got home. “We have to start a GoFundMe page and help Gardner get a car!” he kept saying. He didn’t give up on the idea until his mom Vittoria gave in. Their goal was to get $5, 000 in donations so Gardner could purchase a car. Vittoria and her husband were eager to help their son achieve the goal, especially since they had the same experience years ago. It took a long time to rebuild their lives, but they were able to bounce back. Now, they wanted to help Devonte do the same.

After filling out fifty applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get — a teaching job at what I considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen — teaching English.
School started. I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class who were only six years younger than me. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love for the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs (纸团)and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.
In college, I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as the textbook had said, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. But in fact, humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my taskmaster, known to be the strictest, most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.
My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn’t happening and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the room, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes, he left silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes. I felt mildly proud that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period, I had to face him.

My wife and I never had a green thumb when it came to keeping plants alive far more than a few weeks. So, when I was diagnosed with cancer we didn’t even think about adding a plant to our small apartment. But one day, my friend stopped by and gave us a beautiful plant as a gift, insisting that it would bring life to our home and a sense of calmness during this difficult time.
Surprisingly, the plant took off and grew beautifully, and it brought a sense of joy to our home that we desperately needed. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt useless.
I am a physician, and taking care of the plant made me feel like a caregiver once again. It was nice to be able to nurture something and watch it grow. Since my diagnosis in August 2018, far too often, it seemed, I had to rely on help from other people. The enormous change left me feeling aimless and unsettled. Watering the plant, as small an act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity. Plants and people could still depend on me.
For the next few months, I was recovering from surgery and receiving radiation. Despite my ongoing treatments, we found some peace through tending to the plant. The simple act of watering and watching it grow gave us something to focus 4 outside of my health. It became a small but meaningful part of our lives.
Then, mysteriously, it began to show signs of losing liveliness.

A few years ago, I was unemployed after just getting back on my feet from illness. Although upset, I decided to blow my savings and go to Australia on my own for six months, which turned into two years!
Travelling alone, on the other side of the world, was scary and I faced so many challenges that let me see the kindness in humanity (人性). The most notable for me was just after I had been granted my second year visa, having only $20 left to my name.
I applied for a job through an agency, was offered the job but told to return for a second interview with the office manager, suit required. I pieced together a suit from a charity shop with my last dollars. I had arranged a bank transfer from home but a bank holiday had severely delayed the speed of the transfer, so I was left with no money for food.
At the second interview, my stomach betrayed my hunger and I tried to joke about my financial difficulties. The manager offered to give me money there and then, despite not officially offering me the job. I stubbornly refused, but promised if my money was delayed further I would accept his kind gesture. I got the job!
After this, I found an apartment and used my money from home to cover rent and a deposit, knowing I have a job and a wage to come. I thought things were looking up until I moved into the apartment and discovered my housemate was a completely crazy person.
Two weeks later, I realized I couldn’t stay there and gave notice to leave after I found another apartment around the corner. Again I thought I had dodged a bullet (逃过一劫) and things were OK. I was four days into my new job and arranging to move into the new apartment when I got a text from my new landlord the day before I was due to move in, apologizing and saying the room wasn’t available.
I honestly didn’t know what to do. ___________________________________________________________

(2023新课标全国Ⅰ卷)When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

“Hey, don't worry,” said the man waiting in line behind me. He smiled and pulled out his wallet. “I'll pay for you. I'm already late for work-it'll be faster anyway if I pay for both of our coffees." His hair and shoulders were damp from the rain and his shoes were wet. “Add this gentleman's coffee to my order, please,”he told the cashier. I was astonished that I couldn't see a sign of complaining on his face.
Really? This man was wet and late like me, but was not complaining. Unlike me, he was reaching out and offering to buy my coffee. “Thank you very much,” I said gratefully. “I'm having a really bad morning.”“I know how that is,” the man replied sincerely. “Enjoy your coffee and try to have a better day.” Thanks to the kindness of a guy with wet hair and wet shoes, I decided to keep my internal complaining to a minimum and embrace the start of a new week with positivity.

I voiced my uncertainties to my friends. They didn't laugh at me. Instead, they dismissed my fears and encouraged me to stick it out. Seth even held my shoulders and promised me to give me a hand when necessary. Questioning my own wisdom, I decided at least to attempt the climb. My friends kept right on climbing. But they did not forget me. Seth was always ahead to offer a hand up from time to time.
Finally we came to the worst section yet. To me the slope looked very close to vertical. The slight handholds were few and far between. With fear and trembling, I made my way ahead slowly. My friends waited patiently, not pressuring me to hurry. Instead Seth supported my foot, and those above sent down words of encouragement. My breathing sped up, but my heart pounded even faster, growing loud in my ears. I kept on climbing painstakingly. Finally, I was dirty and sweaty. But none of it mattered. I was on the top!

Sorry."

Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. He picked me up at the bus station where he had dropped me off four days before. Beaming a warm smile at him, I gave him a big hug the moment I saw him. We chatted happily on the way to the airport.

【答案】
A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. As my car neared it my thoughts drifted back to the moment when I rescued the hummingbird from the spider’s web. I rushed back to the deserted house. It was a great comfort that the original hole in the window was nowhere to be found. Leaving the house, I couldn’t help wondering how it was getting on now. Had it managed to find its way back home, or was it still out there somewhere struggling to survive?
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. A flash of movement caught my attention. I turned around to see the same hummingbird hovering in the air. It seemed that the bird was waiting for me, its beady eyes locked on mine as if trying to convey some deep, unspoken gratitude. I felt a surge of relief and awe at the sight of this sound and grateful creature, and I knew that I would always cherish the memories we shared as I climbed into my car and drove away.

I was trying to make my voice sound calm. Planting my feet resolutely on the ground, I said to Sara: “Don’t be afraid!” while holding her hand tight. The dog edged closer with the menacing “GRRR!”. “Run!” I exclaimed, we sprinting to the kindergarten. Just as the dog was overtaking us, we threw ourselves inside. It was really close! We exchanged a happy smile. Seeing Sara stepping into the classroom, I turned for home, wanting desperately to narrate the thrilling episode to Mom.
I told mom what had happened. There followed no response. Then I saw Mom’s tears. “I am so proud of you! You did what you had promised!” Mom said, holding me in a tight embrace, after which Mom looked into my eyes. She gave me some advice on tackling fierce dogs: “Next time you are cornered by such a dog, pretend to pick up a stone. It will be frightened away.” My mom’s words of praise and advice were deeply engraved in my heart. And I promised to be a better guardian of Sara.

【答案】
Suddenly one morning, Joao found Dindim disappeared. “Has it really left?” Joao wondered, his mind mixing with sorrow and joy. In order to breed, he knew that Dindim had to go back, but it still made him heartbroken. Looking at the empty nest, he refused to leave. After a while, he bent down, picked up a few feathers from the ground, and turned back to the room. When putting the feather into a jar, he said to himself, “Fine, it’s finally grown up.”
A few months later, Joao heard some familiar cries in his backyard. He hurriedly ran to the backyard. What caught his eyes were a group of penguins looking around! One even staggered up to him and looked up at him, as if asking, “Old friend, do you remember me?” It was Dindim! He quickly bent down, gently stroking its feathers. Later, these penguins lived there for a while and left some beautiful memories. So, just like Dindim, a penguin remembering who saved it when in trouble, let’s always be grateful.

【答案】
I shrugged and then the first prize winner — Ellen was announced. Though deep down, I didn’t want to win just because my father was an astronaut, I was relieved and disappointed at the same time at the news. When Ellen read to the end, I heard a chorus of praise and saw tears running down my parents’ face. Somehow, a mixed feeling welled up in me. Will Dad feel disappointed? Maybe I should have written about being the son of an astronaut. Then the second prize winner was announced. To my amazement, it was me!
Surprised and thrilled, I went up to the stage. Taking a deep breath, I started to read my essay “My Father’s Son.” He is a great astraunaut. But more importatly, he is a great father to me.“ Upon my finishing reading, the auditorium thundered with applause. When I went back to my seat, Dad put his hand on my shoulder. ”Son, this is the proudest moment of my life," he almost sobbed. It was the proudest moment of my life, too. Maybe I’ll never be a great hero, but just then, it was enough just to be my father’s son.

(2023·广西南宁·南宁三中校考一模)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】
When I was loading up my backpack, Mrs. Sather asked me to go to her. Smiling gently, she asked if I'd like to have a try. “But I'm not good at acting and I'm afraid to screw things up.” In a low voice, I said. Mrs. Sather patted me on the shoulder, saying. “Don't worry, dear. From your writing I know you are a brave girl inside. All you need to do is overcome your fear and take the first step. You can do it. I have faith in you.” Hearing Mrs. Sather's words, I realized it was time to make a change.
One week later, it was time for me to perform on the stage. I felt really nervous at first. Then I remembered all the hard work that I'd put in over the last week. I devoted myself to the play, studying the character, memorizing lines and practicing before the mirror. Gradually, I became more and more confident on the stage. Through misty eyes, I saw Mrs. Sather, who was smiling at me and looking at me encouragingly. I knew I made it! I was very grateful to Mrs. Sather.

【答案】The next day, Alan went out to get the mail as usual and found a box. He opened the box gingerly and looked inside. To his surprise, there was a new kite-a cute robin with beautiful feathers along with a note written on the National Grid’s notepaper. “I felt bad for your daughter, so I hope this new kite will make her smile,” it read. “Stay safe and healthy!” The note was unsigned, but Alan was convinced that the lovable gift was from the worker who came to help yesterday. He took the kite inside and gave it to Abbey. When she saw the kite, her eyes gleamed with excitement.
Deeply moved by this act of kindness, Alan posted the whole story on the Internet. Soon, word got back to National Grid, and the company quickly identified Mike as the worker. When interviewed about it, he explained that as he saw Abbey burying a kite, he knew exactly how the girl felt, which pushed him to do something for her. After leaving the Greens’ house, he stopped by a shop to buy the new kite and then laid the box quietly at their door. He didn’t expect to be recognized, but Alan’s post led to his identity being revealed, which resulted in the story being shared and liked by millions of people across the Internet.

【答案】When I told my mom that I wanted very much to have Naan, she felt puzzled. Naan was not a common dish in our household, and my mom wasn’t sure if she could prepare it, but she promised she would try. The next day, I was thrilled to find that my lunch box now contained a piece of Naan, and I eagerly shared it with Kate. Seeing her smiling face made me feel really happy inside. From that day on, my mom would occasionally pack some Indian delicacies for me to share with Kate, and I would be more than happy to do so.
I moved out of that school soon after and didn't stay in touch with Kate. However, this experience taught me an important lesson about kindness and understanding. Often we judge people too quickly, without realizing their underlying struggles. While it may seem small, sharing my lunch with Kate helped me to connect with her on a deeper level and to understand her better. As I grew older, I would try to apply this lesson in my daily life – to be a little kinder, a little more empathetic, and a little more understanding of people's struggles.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】A local news station picked up the story, and before they knew it, more donations began pouring in. Soon, they achieved their goal, $5,000, and the number kept increasing. They now had over $100, 000 in donations for Gardner and his family. The money was more than enough for a car, and would enable Gardner and his family to move out of the motel and live in a more comfortable space for over a year. Soon, they thought it was time to let Gardner know what they had done for him, so they visited Gardner and his family on a sunny day.
Upon discovering what Kayzen had done, Gardner wept. He expressed his thankfulness to all the people who had helped him and his family. Now they had over $100, 000 in donations to help them bounce back. After renting a simple apartment and purchasing a car. Gardner went to work at ease and lived comfortably with his family. After he was no longer worried about his life, he thought he should put forward this act of kindness, so he gave the extra money to these who were in need like him, and he hoped someone would continue this great circle.

【答案】After class, I walked to his office, took a deep breath and opened the door. My boss was sitting in his chair with a poker face, gazing at me silently. I said nothing, wondering if he would fire me right away. He handed me an envelope, which added to my anxiety at that moment. However, my eyes were wide open when I opened it and read the letter. It was not an unemployment letter but a letter with several suggestions about my teaching, one of which was highlighted in red: An educator should respect students’ feelings. Almost immediately, a surge of warmth rose inside me.
Inspired by his advice, I walked toward the classroom, determined to make a change. As the bell rang, I stood on the platform, eyes wandering across the classroom. I cleared my throat and announced, “Boys and girls, let’s begin with what you think about my literature lesson.” Suddenly, a complete silence fell over the class. Each student lifted their head and cast me a puzzled look. Flashing a smile, I encouraged, “Anything you’d like to say is welcomed!” At this, a ripple of excitement spread through the classroom. The literature class soon amazingly came to life thanks to their brilliant voices. It was at that time that I fully understood what my boss told me: respecting the students instead of ignoring them will make a difference.

【答案】Then, mysteriously, it began to show signs of losing liveliness. I increased my plant watering, and then decreased it. Still, the leaves kept browning and dropping to the floor. I grew more and more frustrated and uneasy. The thought that I couldn’t even care for a simple plant started to haunt me like a shadow. For the past few months, a bond had been built between me and the plant. I couldn’t shake the feeling that if the plant died, I might too. Having seen through my heart and sensed my fear, my wife comforted me, “Honey, your treatment is working well and maybe the plant just needs its.” Her words did make sense and settled my nerves.
As I became less anxious, I began to search online for how to care for my plant. Following the instructions, I transplanted the tree to a larger pot, giving its roots more room to grow and buried some solid plant nutrient under the top layer of the earth. Soon, we both began to thrive again. Whenever I look at the tree with its shinny and lush leaves in its new pot, I make it a point to appreciate my wife and the other people who have cared for and supported me. If the plant outlives me, I hope it will inspire my wife to live her life to the fullest.

【答案】
I honestly didn’t know what to do. I could neither live with the crazy housemate nor afford a hotel. When I returned, lying in bed, I racked my brains all night attempting to seek for a way out of this mess but in vain. That was when I never felt farther from home. The next morning, though with everything weighing on my mind, I dragged myself to work. "Didn’t sleep well?" a colleague asked. Tears welling up, I could hardly contain myself and broke down.
Everyone in the office was so lovely that day. The colleague brought me a hot tea, while others were listening to me quietly. For the first time, I gave up my manhood, pouring out my awful experiences and feelings. The manager offered me a room in his house and even would accompany me to fetch my belongings after work. Maybe that was just a small gesture in their eyes, but it meant the world to me, and I would always seek to pay the kindness forward whenever I could.

【答案】 A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won the first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you’d win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Again thank you very much!”
I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn’t like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works.” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing.
