Every morning, I made it a practice of setting the intention (意图) in my heart of “May I be a tool for them to get what they need right now?”. Today, one girl came and sat down. I started with how we usually do. She can speak but cannot hear and lip-read. I asked one question, and she went on for 10 minutes straight, and in Tamil I understood a couple of words here and there, so I understood that she was not saying anything connected with what I asked. I just kept on listening to her without speaking a word. This went on for an hour and a half! Then, after a long pause, I told her to get back on track with another question. And then she shared for another half an hour straight! The whole time I was just looking in her eyes which would go here and there but come back to me. In the end, I just got up and hugged her and she was smiling wider. Then I invited her to have juice with me. She said yes. What put me in a state of fear was realizing, just a few minutes later, that treating my new friend to some juice was the first celebration of my very first salary! A month ago, I started my first job, and what a blessing to have this important moment in my life be rooted in generosity. 4. What was the writer’s intention according to Paragraph 1? A. A doubt. B. Researchers have found that the old warm high-pressure street lights are rapidly being replaced by cooler LED lights. The University of Exeter study, published in Science Advances, claimed that “this phenomenon is widely increasing the risk of harmful effects to ecosystems”. LED lighting was promoted as being intended to reduce emissions, but its usage has raised energy consumption. One explanation of this is that the increase in power efficiency and the associated decrease in economic cost have driven increased demand for lighting, therefore, any efficiency gains have been counteracted by increased consumption of light. The study also claimed that previous research into the effects of light pollution have underestimated the impacts of blue light radiation. Chief among the health consequences of blue light is its ability to reduce the production of melatonin(褪黑素)that regulates sleep patterns in humans and other organisms. Scientific studies have warned that increased exposure to artificial blue light can worsen people’s sleeping habits. The increase in blue light radiation in Europe has also reduced the visibility of stars in the night sky, which may have impacts on people’s sense of nature. Blue light can also alter the behavioral patterns of animals including bats and moths, as it can change their movements towards or away from light sources. David Smith, of the conservation charity Buglife, said, “Light pollution can dramatically impact animals. We should consider light from a wider biological perspective than that of just humans and focus on better quality lighting that is harmonious with our natural world. Better quality and lower levels of lighting would help save energy, and lower financial costs, while also making our environment safer for living beings. Authorities can dim the lights during night hours, and change the bandwidths(带宽值)of their LED bulbs to produce less harmful blue light.” 8. What is the phenomenon described in paragraph 1? A. The rising demand for public lighting. B. The increasing use of LED lights. C. Old street lights producing lots of emissions. D. Artificial lights at night wasting much energy. 9. What does the underlined word “counteracted” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Judged. B. Maintained. C. Balanced. D. Strengthened. 10. In which aspect are people influenced by blue lights? A. Sleep patterns. B. Eyesight. C. Learning ability. D. Social behaviors. 11. Why does the author mention David Smith? A. To stress the importance of saving energy. B. To persuade authorities to avoid using LED lights. C. To show ways of improving the quality of LED bulbs. D. To provide suggestions on reducing light pollution. B 9. C 10. A 11. 根据第一段“A new analysis of photographs from the International Space Station has identified a shift in the kind of lighting technologies that European countries are using at night to brighten streets and buildings. Researchers have found that the old warm high-pressure street lights are rapidly being replaced by cooler LED lights. The University of Exeter study, published in Science Advances, claimed that ‘this phenomenon is widely increasing the risk of harmful effects to ecosystems’.(一项对国际空间站照片的新分析发现,欧洲国家在夜间用来照亮街道和建筑物的照明技术发生了变化。研究人员发现,老式的暖高压路灯正在迅速被较冷的LED灯所取代。埃克塞特大学发表在《科学进展》上的研究声称,‘这种现象正在广泛增加对生态系统有害影响的风险’。)”可知, 文章第一段描述了 LED 灯使用越来越多的现象。故选 B 项。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段“LED lighting was promoted as being intended to reduce emissions, but its usage has raised energy consumption. One explanation of this is that the increase in power efficiency and the associated decrease in economic cost have driven increased demand for lighting, therefore, any efficiency gains have been counteracted by increased consumption of light.(LED照明被宣传为旨在减少排放,但其使用增加了能源消耗。对此的一种解释是,功率效率的提高和经济成本的相关降低推动了对照明的需求增加,因此,任何效率的提高都被光消耗的增加所 。)”并结合选项可推测, 画线词所在句表示任何效率的提高都被增加的光消耗“抵消”了,C 项意为“抵消, 中和”。 故选 C 项。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Chief among the health consequences of blue light is its ability to reduce the production of melatonin (褪黑素) that regulates sleep patterns in humans and other organisms. Scientific studies have warned that increased exposure to artificial blue light can worsen people’s sleeping habits.(蓝光对健康的主要影响是它能够减少褪黑激素的产生,而褪黑激素调节人类和其他生物的睡眠模式。科学研究已经警告说,增加暴露在人造蓝光下会恶化人们的睡眠习惯。)”可知,蓝光会影响人们的睡眠模式。故选A项。 根据最后一段“Light pollution can dramatically impact animals. We should consider light from a wider biological perspective than that of just humans and focus on better quality lighting that is harmonious with our natural world. Better quality and lower levels of lighting would help save energy, and lower financial costs, while also making our environment safer for living beings. Authorities can dim the lights during night hours, and change the bandwidths of their LED bulbs to produce less harmful blue light.(光污染会对动物产生巨大影响。我们应该从比人类更广泛的生物学角度来考虑光,并关注与我们的自然世界和谐相处的更高质量的照明。更好的质量和更低的照明水平将有助于节约能源和降低财务成本,同时也使我们的环境对人类更安全。当局可以在夜间调暗灯光,并改变LED灯泡的带宽,以产生危害较小的蓝光。)”可知, David Smith 表示光污染会极大地影响动物,作者引用 David Smith 的话语旨在为减少光污染提供建议。故选 D 项。 D Do you have a brain for math? New research indicates that levels of two key neurotransmitters (脑神经传递素) — glutamate (谷氨酸) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)can predict mathematical abilities, suggesting brain chemistry may be playing a role in those who find math easy. The new study, published in the journal PLOS Biology, recruited 255 subjects extending a range of six-year olds in primary school to university students. The research focused on glutamate and GABA, known to play a role in brain plasticity (可塑性) and learning. Based on prior research, the focus was on two brain regions linked with mathematical abilities — the left intraparietal sulcus (IPS 顶叶内沟) and the left middle frontal gyrus (MFG 脑额中回). The results were interestingly different. In the youngest subjects high GABA levels and low glutamate levels in the left IPS were consistently associated with high math skills. But in the older university group the exact opposite was seen: low GABA and high glutamate were linked with strong mathematical abilities. Levels of both neurotransmitters in the MFG did not associate with math skills. The group was tested twice over 18 months, allowing the researchers to see if these neurotransmitter levels could predict mathematical ability into the future. And it worked, with neurotransmitter levels effectively predicting one’s success on math tests completed a year and a half later. Another recent study from the same research team looked specifically at GABA levels in MFG of 14 to 18 year olds. That research indicated MFG GABA levels could effectively predict whether a student was still studying maths or had ceased that subject years prior. Cohen Kadosh, one of the researchers working on the study, says this may indicate math education can help stimulate the development of key brain regions. Further research will work on whether certain learning interventions can help those children less interested in math so these brain regions still get the developmental workout they need. “Not every adolescent enjoys maths so we need to investigate possible alternatives, such as training in logic and reasoning that engage the same brain area as maths,” says Cohen Kadosh. 12. What is the new study aimed at? A. Exploring mental development of the subjects. B. Finding the tie between brain chemistry and math. C. Testing the link between brain regions. D. Revealing the structure of brain. 13. What can be learned from the findings? A. The levels of GABA decide one’s math skills. B. Low MFG glutamate means poor math ability. C. Neurotransmitters in the MFG affect math skills. D. Math education may help with brain development. 14. What can better math education according to Cohen Kadosh? A. Studying more possible options. B. Tracing slow learners’ early learning. C. Training math learners respectively. D. Developing key relevant brain areas. 15. What can be the best title of the text? A. Factors Affecting Math Skills B. Ways to Promote Math Education C. Brain Activities Involved in Math Study D. Math Ability Predicted by Neurotransmitters 【答案】12. B 13. D 14. D 15. 文章第一段讲到“New research indicates that levels of two key neurotransmitters (脑神经传递素)—glutamate (谷氨酸) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)can predict mathematical abilities, suggesting brain chemistry may be playing a role in those who find math easy. List your options (选择). It may appear that there is only one course of action, but that is not necessarily true. No matter how limited your situation seems, try to make a list of options. Brainstorm, and write down every idea that comes to your mind, as crazy as it may seem. You can always cross it off the list later, but crazy ideas can bring creative solutions. Once you have your list, ask others for suggestions. ___17___ Weigh the possible results. For every option, list every possible result, and label (标签) it as positive or negative. ___18___ You can put a plus sign next to each positive result and a minus sign next to each negative one. Give two pluses or minuses to the best and the worst. ___19___ This is the hardest step, but there will hopefully be a decision on your list that is supported by both logic and intuition (直觉). If you still can’t decide, ask for advice from people you trust. If need be, let them be the tie-breakers. It’s better than flipping (掷) a coin. Carry it out wholeheartedly once you have made a decision. At this stage, don’t let yourself be confused by thinking about all the choices you didn’t pick. In the end, remember to evaluate your decision afterward. ___20___ By drawing wisdom from every decision you make, you can ensure that every choice has at least one positive result. A. Make a choice. B. Think about who is affected. C. There is a simple way to do this. D. Sometimes they can offer the most creative ideas. E. You should hope for the best and prepare for the worst. F. B I’m now at a special university where 46 speech and hearing impaired (受损) students graduate each year. Every morning, I made it a practice of setting the intention (意图) in my heart of “May I be a tool for them to get what they need right now?”. Today, one girl came and sat down. I started with how we usually do. She can speak but cannot hear and lip-read. I asked one question, and she went on for 10 minutes straight, and in Tamil (泰米尔语). I understood a couple of words here and there, so I understood that she was not saying anything connected with what I asked. A. A doubt. B. A wish. C. A struggle. D. A guess. 5. When the girl came, the writer _________. A. required her to speak in English B. discovered something strange about her C. asked her questions as usual D. began to teach her to lip-read 6. What did the girl do in the conversation? A. She asked the writer to speak. B. She listened most of the time herself. C. She stared at the writer’s eyes all the time. D. She went on talking for 1.5 hours before a long pause. 7. How did the writer feel after treating the girl to juice? A. Glad. B. Regretful. C. Bitter. D. Grateful. C A new analysis of photographs from the International Space Station has identified a shift in the kind of lighting technologies that European countries are using at night to brighten streets and buildings. D Do you have a brain for math? Another recent study from the same research team looked specifically at GABA levels in MFG of 14 to 18 year olds That research indicated MFG GABA levels could effectively predict whether a student was still studying maths or had ceased that subject years prior.
