So how difficult is it to learn English, especially if your first language is quite different? The most common complaint language learners make about English is that the spelling of words is baffling. They often have little or nothing to do with their pronunciation. It’s easy enough to teach someone how to write the letter “a”, for example, but then they must be taught that its pronunciation changes in words like hat, hate and father. In oak it isn’t pronounced at all. Another area of difficulty that learners of English often comment on is the prevalence (普遍) of irregular (不规则的) past verbs in English. It’s simple to remember that the past tense of walk is walked and pick is picked. But what about all the irregular verbs, like read and think? For read, the past tense looks the same, but is pronounced differently. For think, the past tense thought involves (包含) great change to both the spelling and the pronunciation. There’s not always a pattern (模式) to many of these irregular verbs. For verbs ending with “ink” we have think / thought, but another irregular pattern drink / drank. English has several hundred such irregular verbs for learners to look forward to memorising. A difficulty has something to do with how English speakers show politeness. Some languages have quite clear ways for their users to do this. In French you can use the pronoun vous instead of tu to be polite. English only has you, so that doesn’t work. In Japanese you can use polite forms of words, so that although kuu, taberu and meshiagaru all mean “eat” in Japanese, the longer words are more polite. In English we can use longer words: “Would you like to consume nourishment?” instead of “Would you like to eat?” — but instead of being polite, it sounds rather strange. So spare a thought for those picking up an English textbook for the first time — mastering (掌握) the language is difficult. 1.What does the underlined word “baffling” in paragraph 2 mean? A.Interesting. B.Confusing. C.Important. D.Traditional. 2.What does the author think of irregular verbs in English? A.Many of them have the same pattern. B.Many of them have changed over time. C.They are difficult for learners to memorise. D.They are used more commonly than regular ones. 3.What does the author want to show by giving French and Japanese examples in paragraph 5? A.There are no clear ways to express politeness in English. B.There are many ways to be polite when speaking English. C.English and other languages have similar ways to show politeness. D.It’s important to be polite when we speak English and other languages. 4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.Why Is English Hard to Learn? B.Where Do English Words Come From? C.Why Do English Words Have So Many Forms? D.How Is English Different from Other Languages? B(23-24山东济宁邹城二中月考试题) Why do we talk the way we do? It might date back to when our ancestors left the jungle for the open plain. Between 5.3 million and 16 million years ago, Africa’s landscapes changed from thick, leafy forests to wide-open grasslands. This environmental change pushed our ancestors out of the trees and onto the ground. Along with all of the physical and behavioral changes this may have caused, researchers also believe it may have changed the way we speak. “Open landscapes provide us with fewer objects to affect signal communication, meaning our voices can travel further compared with that in thick forests,” Charlotte Gannon, a researcher who studies language development, told Newsweek. “The move to these open spaces may have increased the effectiveness of our communication.” By comparing the vocal calls of the orangutan (大猩猩) , Gannon and her team were able to establish how different calls could travel across different landscapes. In their study, the team played 487 calls from orangutans and measured their audibility (可听度) at set length over an overall distance of over 1,300 feet in the South African plain. “Our results were surprising,” Gannon said, “The rule of sound spread suggests that lower-frequency (低频率) sounds (the grumphs) would have traveled further than higher-frequency sounds (the kiss squeaks). Our results actually found the opposite to this.” In these environmental settings, consonant (辅音)-like calls traveled a lot further than vowel (元音) -like calls. Actually, around 80 percent of consonant-based calls were audible at 1,300 feet, compared to only 20 percent of vowel-based calls. Gannon said these results highlight the importance of studying living orangutan to learn about our species’ history. “We can view them as time machines that allow us to recreate key moments of our history so we can learn more about the development of our language,” Gannon said. “Despite their popularity in modern languages, consonants have often been forgotten when discussing speech development. Our research highlights not only their presence in ancient times but their importance to the development of language.” 5.What led to the speech development? A.Behavioral change. B.Time development. C.Physical development. D.Environmental change. 6.What makes communication happening 10 million years ago more effective? A.Less block. B.Better tools. C.Louder voice. D.Larger vocabulary. 7.What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A.The results of the study. B.The process of the research. C.The purpose of the program. D.The participants of the project. 8.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs? A.The living orangutan can recreate our language. B.Consonants are significant in language development. C.The sound of grumphs travels further than that of kiss squeaks. D.Consonant-like calls travel four times further than vowel-like calls. 四、完形填空(23-24福建福州高一期末试题) I am often asked how I learned to speak Chinese fluently. 1 , as a native English speaker, learning to speak in tones was the 2 part about learning Chinese for me. B.Where Do English Words Come From? C.Why Do English Words Have So Many Forms? D.How Is English Different from Other Languages? 【答案】1.B 2.C 3.A 4.A 【导语】这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了英语难学的原因。 1.词义猜测题。文章第二段讲到“The most common complaint language learners make about English is that the spelling of words (语言学习者对英语最常见的抱怨是单词的拼写)”以及划线单词下文“They often have little or nothing to do with their pronunciation. (它们通常与发音几乎没有关系。)”可知,英语单词的拼写与发音往往不一致,这让英语学习者很困惑、苦恼。因此,第二段中带下划线的意思是“令人困惑的”。故选B。 2.推理判断题。文章第三段讲到“It’s simple to remember that the past tense of walk is walked and pick is picked. But what about all the irregular verbs, like read and think? For read, the past tense looks the same, but is pronounced differently 文章第五段讲到“A difficulty has something to do with how English speakers show politeness. (一个难题就是说英语的人如何表现礼貌)”可知,合适本段主旨句,下文列举的两个例子就是解释主旨句。因此,作者想通过法语和日语的例子来说明英语中没有明确的礼貌表达方式。故选A。 4.主旨大意题。本文共分为三部分:文章的第一段为第一部分,引出了话题,即英语难学;第二至六段为第二部分,论述了英语难学的原因;最后一段为第三部分,再次说明掌握英语不容易。由此可知,本文主要说明英语难学的原因。因此,最佳标题是:为什么英语很难学?故选A。 B(23-24山东济宁邹城二中月考试题) Why do we talk the way we do? It might date back to when our ancestors left the jungle for the open plain. Between 5.3 million and 16 million years ago, Africa’s landscapes changed from thick, leafy forests to wide-open grasslands. D.Consonant-like calls travel four times further than vowel-like calls. 【答案】5.D 6.A 7.B 8.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。专注于探讨人类语言发展的可能历史及其与古人类生活环境变化之间的关系。 5.细节理解题。根据第一段“Why do we talk the way we do? It might date back to when our ancestors left the jungle for the open plain. Between 5.3 million and 16 million years ago, Africa’s landscapes changed from thick, leafy forests to wide-open grasslands. This environmental change pushed our ancestors out of the trees and onto the ground. Along with all of the physical and behavioral changes this may have caused, researchers also believe it may have changed the way we speak.(我们为什么要这样说话?这可能要追溯到我们的祖先离开丛林来到开阔平原的时候。在530万到1600万年前,非洲的地貌从茂密的森林变成了开阔的草原。这种环境变化把我们的祖先从树上推到了地上。除了可能引起的身体和行为变化外,研究人员还认为它可能改变了我们说话的方式)”可知,环境变化导致了语言的发展。故选D项。 6.推理判断题。根据第二段““Open landscapes provide us with fewer objects to affect signal communication, meaning our voices can travel further compared with that in thick forests,” Charlotte Gannon, a researcher who studies language development, told Newsweek. “The move to these open spaces may have increased the effectiveness of our communication.”(研究语言发展的研究人员夏洛特·甘农在接受《新闻周刊》采访时表示:“开阔的景观为我们提供了更少的物体来影响信号交流,这意味着与茂密的森林相比,我们的声音可以传播得更远。”“搬到这些开放空间可能提高了我们沟通的效率。”)”可推知,更少的阻碍让1000万年前的交流变得更有效。故选A项。 7.主旨大意。根据第三段“By comparing the vocal calls of the orangutan (大猩猩) , Gannon and her team were able to establish how different calls could travel across different landscapes. In their study, the team played 487 calls from orangutans and measured their audibility (可听度) at set length over an overall distance of over 1,300 feet in the South African plain.(通过比较猩猩的叫声,甘农和她的团队能够确定不同的叫声是如何在不同的景观中传播的。在他们的研究中,研究小组播放了487个猩猩的叫声,并在南非平原上超过1300英尺的总距离上测量了它们的可听性)”可知,本段主要讲述了研究的过程。故选B项。 8.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“In these environmental settings, consonant (辅音)-like calls traveled a lot further than vowel (元音) -like calls. Actually, around 80 percent of consonant-based calls were audible at 1,300 feet, compared to only 20 percent of vowel-based calls.(在这些环境中,类似辅音的叫声比类似元音的叫声传播得更远。实际上,在1300英尺的高空,大约80%的辅音通话都能被听到,而元音通话只有20%能被听到)”以及最后一段““We can view them as time machines that allow us to recreate key moments of our history so we can learn more about the development of our language,” Gannon said. “Despite their popularity in modern languages, consonants have often been forgotten when discussing speech development. Our research highlights not only their presence in ancient times but their importance to the development of language.”(甘农说:“我们可以把它们看作时光机,让我们重现历史上的关键时刻,这样我们就能更多地了解我们语言的发展。尽管辅音在现代语言中很受欢迎,但在讨论语言发展时却经常被遗忘。我们的研究不仅强调了它们在古代的存在,而且强调了它们对语言发展的重要性。”)”可推知,辅音在语言发展中很重要。故选B项。 四、完形填空(23-24福建福州高一期末试题) I am often asked how I learned to speak Chinese fluently. 1 , as a native English speaker, learning to speak in tones was the 2 part about learning Chinese for me.
