Heritage sites are universally considered as the places where you can learn about the history of human development and social evolution. Therefore, if you have a keen interest in meeting your curiosity about it, the following on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List will be a must-check list for you.
Dinosaur Provincial Park, Canada
The park is best known for its extensive fossil beds, within which 35 species of dinosaurs from about 100 to 65 million years ago have been identified. There are also fossilized remains of fish, reptiles, and amphibians. The area was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.
Salonga National Park, Congo
This is the largest reserve in Congo, covering more than 14,000 square miles. The park was established in 1970. The thick forest provides habitats for various animals like parrots, elephants and monkeys. Park visitors observe the animals from motorized river boats. The park was entered into the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1984.Hadrian’s Wall, England
This is a Roman barrier that guarded the border of Britain. Hadrian (ruled 117-138 CE) went to Britain in 122 and was the first to build a wall, 80 miles long, to separate the Romans from the barbarians (野蛮人). There was no intention of fighting from the wall top; the soldiers there were trained to encounter the enemy in the open. In 1987, Hadrian’s Wall was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
Easter Island, Chile
This place is famous for its huge stone statues. The first European visitors, the Dutch, named it Easter Island in memory of their day of arrival. The small and hilly island was formed by volcanoes. Easter Island was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1995.

I have a strong faith that the pain is almost gone but the feeling of success will stay forever. I was among the 38,000 runners who participated in the marathon (马拉松赛跑), the largest event of its kind in Asia.
My decision to participate in the marathon was because of the insistence of my wife, who had run the half-marathon previously. This year, she wanted me to participate along with her. Unexpectedly, her application got rejected while mine got accepted.
Though I had been into fitness training before, it seemed to be a daunting task to run 21 km. I started training about 10 weeks before the day. I had made up my mind to finish the run. So I tried my best to accommodate training into my busy schedule whenever I could.
What’s more, I remembered that four weeks into my training, my shoes were worn. I searched and hunted and literally spent a fortune on a new pair of shoes. However, right on the first day of running with them, I felt that they were not for me. I preserved, thinking that my discomfort was because the shoes were new. Eventually, I gave up on them. I even tried looking for another new pair of shoes, but couldn’t find that were as comfortable as my old ones.
Finally, on 16th January 2011, I ran and completed the half-marathon. And I did it in my old shoes.
Now, when I think about it, it all seems so easy. All I had to do was to picture completing the run in good time in my mind.
What I have learned from the experience is that completing a marathon is like any other goal in life — largely a mind-over-matter phenomenon. In other words, unless you believe you can reach your goal, you’ve lost even before you begin. No doubt, factors such as hard work, experience and talent help to a greater or lesser degree. But without your belief that you will get there, every goal remains difficult to achieve.
24.Why did the writer participate in the marathon at first?
A.It was the largest event of its kind. B.He had run the half-marathon previously.
C.His wife insisted on him participating. D.He had been training for a long time.
25.What can we learn from the text?
A.The writer was the best among all the runners.
B.The writer tried his best to do some marathon training.
C.The writer’s fitness training before was only a little help to him in the run.
D.The writer’s old shoes were very expensive.
26.The writer says completing a marathon is like “a mind-over-matter phenomenon” because_______.
A.self-confidence is the primary factor in a marathon.
B.to win a marathon depends on your mind, not on your shoes
C.it would be easy if you made up your mind to begin it
D.belief can bring you success in a marathon
27.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Practice Makes Perfect. B.Insist on Your Decision
C.The Pain before Success D.A Running Lesson
C
In recent studies we have been investigating mirror writing by typical 4- to 6-year-old children. The term is used because the characters — numbers and capital letters — are reversed (反向), yet are correct when looked at in a mirror.
Mirror writing entered the scientific literature in 1878. The explanations for the phenomenon were not only insufficient but also often wrong. One of them is — writing with the left hand. Throughout the 20th century, scientific journals have published mirror writing mostly produced by left-handed children. Even today, left-handedness is often the favorite explanation of teachers when children produce mirror writing.
The explanation we find for the phenomenon of mirror writing of characters works on two successive levels, the first cerebral and the second behavioral. The cerebral level shows that the brain removes orientation (left or right) when storing images, a process called symmetrisation or mirror generalization. This mirror-generalization process leads children aged 5 to know, from memory, the shape of the characters, but not their left/right orientation. Given the features of the process — horizontal mirror in the visual modality (视觉模式) — it is important to note that the initial learning of the form of the characters by the children is mainly visual, and that the children only produce horizontal mirror writing.
At the behavioral level, when children write the characters from memory, they must give them an orientation. In countries whose primary languages are written in Latin characters — written from left to right — children most often point them toward the right. This leads them to reverse mainly the left-oriented characters: J, Z, 1, 2, 3, 7, and 9. However, when spatial constraints cause them to write from right to left, the children instead reverse the right-oriented letters.
Since this explanation has nothing to do with the handedness of the children, it can be predicted that right-handed children will reverse characters almost often as left-handed children, and that – left-handed or right-handed – children will primarily reverse left-oriented characters in Western culture. This is because they strictly orient the characters in the direction of writing.
28.What aspect of a character does mirror generalization help children to know?
A.Its form. B.Its pronunciation.
C.Its meaning. D.Its orientation.
29.Which paragraph shows why mirror writing is reversed horizontally rather than vertically (垂直)?
A.Paragraph 2. B.Paragraph 3.
C.Paragraph 4. D.Paragraph 5.
30.Which of the following is likely to be reversed by a child writing from right to left?
A.M. B.C. C.8. D.9.
31.What can we learn from the study?
A.Handedness is the main reason for mirror writing.
B.Right-handed children won’t write reversed characters.
C.Left-handed children reverse right-oriented characters more often.
D.Children in the US tend to primarily reverse left-oriented characters.
D
Children who spent more than two hours per day in front of a television or computer screen were more likely to report behavioral and social problems than kids who watched less, according to a University of Bristol study that will be published in Pediatrics.
Researchers recorded the playing, screen viewing and activity habits of 1,000 children aged 10 to 11. They also had the kids fill out questionnaires designed to estimate the kids’ emotional well-being and behavior.
The questionnaires contained 20 questions covering five sections—emotional difficulties, conduct problems, hyperactivity (活动过度), inattention, friendship and peer groups and problems relating to friends and peer groups.
The study found that those children who spent more than two hours per day watching TV or using a computer were at an increased risk of psychological difficulties. This risk increased if they also failed to meet the guidelines on physical activity.
While the risks for kids who spent a lot of time in front of a screen appeared to be increased by lack of physical activity, the opposite was not true: Increase in physical activity did not seem to decrease kids’ high scores in psychological difficulties if they spent a lot of time sedentary (久坐 的) in front of a screen. By contrast, sedentary time spent reading a book or working on a project corresponded to the highest scores of psychological well-being.
“While low levels of screen viewing may not be problematic, we cannot rely on physical activity to compensate for long hours of screen viewing,” lead author Dr. Angie Page said in a statement. “Watching TV or playing computer games for more than two hours a day is related to greater psychological difficulties regardless of how active children are.”
Although Page’s study doesn’t clarify the links between inactivity, screen time and psychological well-being, it’s true that kids in the United States are getting less exercise and more screen time than they should. In 2009, Page’s team found a connection between a child’s physical activity and independent mobility, the amount of space in which a child can play without the supervision of an adult. They concluded that, as play spaces have decreased in recent decades, childhood inactivity-and perhaps screen time—has increased.
32.What information can we get about the University of Bristol study?
A.It was done by an elementary school.
B.The results of it have been published.
C.All the kids studied had to fill out questionnaires.
D.The questionnaires of it contained five questions.
33.The researchers’ purpose of letting the kids fill out questionnaires was to________.
A.make a judgment about the kids’ behavior and how healthy they were emotionally
B.estimate the average time kids spent in front of a screen
C.infer whether the kids have psychological problems or not
D.get information about the psychological activity kids like
34.Why do more kids lack physical activities in recent years according to Page’s team?
A.More electronic products have poured into their world.
B.They have too much homework to do.
C.They have fewer spaces to play in.
D.They lack the supervision of their parents.
35.What does the passage mainly discuss?
A.A study shows more screen time and inactivity increase kids’ risks of psychological difficulties.
B.A study clarifies the links between inactivity, screen time and psychological well-being.
C.A study illustrates why childhood inactivity and screen time have increased.
D.A study demonstrates how to limit children’s TV and screen time at home.

第二节(满分25分)

Emily White was born seventeen years ago with many physical issues affecting her tiny body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. Though no one expected her to survive, she did make it. But she had a strange figure that everyone could recognize, even from a distance.
In Emily’s hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school hall at Christmas. It had been performed for so many years that it had become one of the most important events for many of the townsfolk. Each year, many people tried out for the show, but most were turned down. Only the best performers could be included.
Emily had a most beautiful singing voice. Last year, she asked Mrs. Owens, her music teacher, if she could join in the performance. Mrs. Owens took a look at her body and said, “Child, you just don’t fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable too.”
Without singing a single note, Mrs. Owens sent Emily back through the door of the choral room (合唱室). Hurt and upset, Emily decided never to try out again. But things changed as the following school year, Mrs. Owens retired and a new music teacher arrived—Mr. Butler.
He had heard about Emily and suggested that she give it a try again. Emily didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated about it. But finally her love for singing and strong desire to join in the performance outweighed her hesitation. She tried out again and learnt the result would be posted the next day on the door of the choral room.
Emily couldn’t sleep that night, having turned in bed back and forth thousand times as she was worried that she would be rejected again and would never fit in.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The nex tday, Emily hurried to school and anxiously glanced at the list of the result.___________________

根据第二段的“My decision to participate in the marathon was because of the insistence of my wife, who had run the half-marathon previously.(我决定参加马拉松比赛是因为我妻子的坚持,她以前跑过半程马拉松)”可知,作者参加马拉松的原因是妻子坚持要他参与。故选C。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段的“I started training about 10 weeks before the day. I had made up my mind to finish the run. So I tried my best to accommodate training into my busy schedule whenever I could.(我在比赛前10周左右开始训练。我已下定决心跑完全程。所以我尽我所能把训练安排在繁忙的日程中)”可知,作者在繁忙的日程中尽可能挤出时间进行训练。故选B。
26.细节理解题。根据最后一段的“What I have learned from the experience is that completing a marathon is like any other goal in life — largely a mind-over-matter phenomenon. In other words, unless you believe you can reach your goal, you’ve lost even before you begin. 故选A。
27.主旨大意题。根据第一段的“I have a strong faith that the pain is almost gone but the feeling of success will stay forever. (我坚信痛苦几乎消失了,但成功的感觉将永远存在)”以及全文可知,本文主要讲述了作者参加马拉松比赛,比赛前做好了充分的训练,但是最后一双不合脚的鞋子,不得不使作者放弃了比赛,作者也由此得到一个心得:只有你心里有信念,觉得自己可以的时候,才有可能会成功。所以“跑步心得”适合作本文的标题。故选D。

根据第三段的“This mirror-generalization process leads children aged 5 to know, from memory, the shape of the characters, but not their left/right orientation.(这种镜像泛化的过程使5岁的孩子从记忆中知道汉字的形状,但不知道它们的左右方向)”可知,镜像泛化能帮助孩子了解文字的形式。故选A。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段的“Given the features of the process—horizontal mirror in the visual modality(考虑到这个过程的特点——视觉模式中的水平镜像)”可知,第三段的这部分信息说明了镜像书写是水平的而不是垂直的。故选B。
30.推理判断题。根据第四段的“In countries whose primary languages are written in Latin characters — written from left to right — children most often point them toward the right. This leads them to reverse mainly the left-oriented characters: J, Z, 1, 2, 3, 7, and 9. However, when spatial constraints cause them to write from right to left, the children instead reverse the right-oriented letters(在以拉丁字母为主要语言的国家——从左到右书写——孩子们通常把字母指向右边。
根据最后一段的“it can be predicted that right-handed children will reverse characters almost often as left-handed children, and that–left-handed or right-handed–children will primarily reverse left-oriented characters in Western culture. This is because they strictly orient the characters in the direction of writing.(可以预测,右撇子的孩子几乎会像左撇子的孩子一样经常反转字符,而且在西方文化中,无论是左撇子还是右撇子,他们主要会反转向左的字符。这是因为他们严格按照书写的方向来定位字符)”可知, 在美国孩子们往往将左向字符弄颠倒了。故选D。

The study found that those children who spent more than two hours per day watching TV or using a computer were at an increased risk of psychological(心理上的) difficulties.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Emily White was born seventeen years ago with many physical issues affecting her tiny body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles (肌肉)were out of shape. Though no one expected her to survive, she did make it. But she had a strange figure(身材) that everyone could recognize, even from a distance.
Emily didn’t want to be rejected(拒绝) again, so she hesitated(犹豫) about it.
Paragraph 1:
The next day, Emily hurried to school and anxiously glanced at the list of the result.___________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Finally, the day of the performance came.____________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【参考答案】
The next day, Emily hurried to school and anxiously glanced at the list of the results. To her great surprise, she was not rejected this time. Her name stood proudly at the top of the list. It was she, Emily White, who was chosen to be the lead singer! Emily couldn’t believe her eyes. Just then, she felt a gentle pat on the shoulder. Mr. Butler said to her with determined eyes, “Emily, I chose you to lead because of your extraordinary voice. Just believe in yourself.” Greatly moved and encouraged, Emily practiced really hard.
Finally, the day of the performance came. Standing in the front, Emily felt her throat tight and palms sweating. When the curtain rose, the eyes of the whole audience fell upon her. “Emily White!” Someone whispered. With Mr. Butler’s encouraging words in mind, she began to sing her heart out—her voice travelled in the hall like a nightingale’s singing. Everyone was shocked by her great talent and offered big rounds of applause. She was shining on stage—she knew now she was known to everyone not for her appearance, but for her voice as an angel’s.
【语篇解读】
