Zhou Yihan, a 16- year- old student from Shanghai Kongjiang Senior High School, has developed a stair- climbing robot to help the elderly when shopping. He found that many elders prefer offline shopping, but carrying heavy things like rice and oil can be physically difficult for them, and many buildings have no elevators.
Driven by an aim to make a difference, Zhou set out to find a solution. He spent a year making his robot, carefully programming its every function and using ultrasonic sensors (超声波传感器) for its mobility (移动性) and adaptation (适应性).
Unlike other robots, Zhou’s creation has a special feature - deformable (可变形的) wheels. The robot can recognize the uneven ground of older buildings and its wheels can transform from circles into triangles. When traveling on the flat ground, the robot uses circular wheels and achieves turning by varying its speed. When climbing stairs or traveling through tough areas, the robot changes to triangular wheels.
Developing a robot is like solving a puzzle with many pieces. Zhou needs to learn robotics, programming and engineering. Not letting his age hold him back, Zhou dove into online courses to learn all about robotics and sought guidance from his teachers to deepen his understanding.
To ensure the safety of the elderly users, he needed to carefully design and test the robot to prevent accidents or injuries during operation. Therefore, he did many tests to simulate (模拟) different situations and identify potential risks.
After completing his stair- climbing robot, Zhou has reflected on its potential for improvement. He hopes to use slip ring structure (滑环结构) within the wheel. This will help to prevent wire entanglement (缠绕) and knots (结) during rotation (旋转) to ensure the smooth operation of the device. Additionally, Zhou plans to add a box to hold goods for the elderly.
9. What made Zhou want to invent the stair- climbing robot?
A. His school homework.

Electric vehicles, or EVs, recently have won people’s rising love. Every year, technological improvements, especially lithium-ion batteries (锂电池), make EVs rather than gas cars become more people’s first choice.
In a video about cars, Mueller, an expert in studying cars, researches into the history of electric cars and explains why they are the future cars. He writes, “I drive an electric car. I think electric cars are the future, because they are better cars. They have better torque (扭转力), acceleration (加速) and better control.”
Best of all, you never have to visit a gas station—this attracts most people. Every morning your car is charged (充满电的) and ready to go. And if you are worried about miles they can cover (行驶), that’s not necessary. Almost all trips can be done in an EV with a proper battery. And fast chargers along the way make it possible to do longer road trips if necessary. You have to rest at some stops anyway, just getting your car charged. What’s more, battery tech makes the battery cheaper, smaller and lighter.
Besides, it’s clean technology: A traditional gas car causes more than twice carbon pollution as much as an EV. Even in places that get almost all of their electricity from burning coal, an EV still pollutes less than a traditional gas car. Supposing a 10-year service life, a traditional car will let out 66,000 pounds more carbon pollution than an electric car.
Human science technology is always moving forward. However, some challenges still remain about EVs, such as the set of charging stops, the over cost of electricity, battery life and so on. According to the present situation of EVs, scientists and researchers need to have a careful look and study on them further.
13. ________ have become more people’s first choice.
A. Gas cars
B. Race cars
C. EVs
D. Traditional cars
14. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Electric cars have better torque, acceleration and control.
B. It’s impossible to do longer road trips in electric cars.
C. Battery tech makes the battery more expensive but lighter.
D. Electric cars can cause zero pollution to the environment.
15. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. EVs.
B. A gas station.
C. A traditional car.
D. Your worry.
16. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. The reasons why EVs are becoming more and more popular.
B. EVs produce less carbon pollution than gas cars.
C. Human science technology is always moving forward..
D. Almost all trips can be done in an EV with a proper battery.

Across the world, humans buy around 1.3 billion single-use plastic bottles a day. However, only about 9% of them are recycled and most of them end up in landfills, the ocean or elsewhere in nature.
When beach-loving Madison Checketts noticed that many plastic bottles polluted the sand during her family trip to California, the 12-year-old American girl realized that this needed to be changed. So for her school science project, she decided to focus on reducing plastic litter.
During her research, Madison came across a special method of packing water within an eatable material-a gel membrane (凝胶膜). At that time, the girl got her idea: She would design an eatable water bottle called the Eco-Hero.
To carry out her idea, Madison developed the method by doing scientific tests with common food additives. She also learned from previous research on eatable water bottles. Based on the past research, she improved the method and made her bottles bigger and able to last for a longer time. She found that water, lemon juice and other chemicals could be used together to make a gel bag that wouldn’t break. And the bag could hold up to 3/4 cup of water and could be kept in the fridge for three weeks.
“My biggest goal with this project is to help the world,” says the young inventor. She hopes her invention can encourage others to take better care of the planet. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be in a big way,” she adds. “People can make a difference to the world, even if it’s just in a small way.”
41. How many plastic bottles are recycled a day across the world?

“Queen Wen” makes history following Li Na’s steps
On Jan. 25, 2014, Li Na became the first Asian player to win the Australian Open women’s singles (女单). At that time, 11-year-old Zheng Qinwen was watching in front of a television.
The same day 10 years later, Zheng made history by reaching the Australian Open women’s singles final, becoming the second Chinese female (女性) tennis player to advance (晋级) to a Grand Slam (大满贯) singles final. On Jan. 27, 2024, she came runner-up (亚军) in the event.
“Li Na is my idol. It’s she who helped shape my dream,” said Zheng. During the 2024 Australian Open, the two spoke in person for the first time, and Zheng credited (归功于) Li with offering some key advice. “She told me, ‘Don’t think too much. Just go for it.’,” Zheng said to Xinhua.
These moments all made this decade- long “inheritance (传承)” even more special. Zheng and Li, both from Hubei, shared a similar path (道路) in learning tennis: They had professional and international training from a young age, following international standards and setting clear goals, noted Xinhua.

B. A science competition.
C. His hope to help the old.
D. His shopping experience.
10. How is Zhou’s robot different from the traditional ones?
A. It has unique sensors.
B. It has adaptive wheels.
C. It has online systems.
D. It has speed changers.
11. What is the meaning of the underlined word “potential” in Paragraph 5?
A. Dangerous.
B. Possible.
C. Unexpected.
D. Exact.
12. What improvement does Zhou plan to make to the robot?
A. He plans to make the robot smaller and smoother.
B. He plans to add a camera for live monitoring
C. He plans to use slip ring structure to improve its speed.
D. He plans to improve the wheels to avoid wire entanglement.

13 ________ have become more people’s first choice.
A. Gas cars
B. Race cars
C. EVs
C A traditional car.
D. Your worry.
