Libraries give lids a quiet and safe place to read and learn. For over 100 years, libraries have played an important role in Americans’ education. But how are these book—filled buildings changing with the times? You may be surprised to find out.
Benjamin Franklin famously founded (创建) America’s first lending library in 1731. But the public library system got its biggest development in the American history in the late ICOOS. Businessman Andrew Carnegie donated millions of dollars to help build free public libraries across the country. Between 1886 and 1919, Carnegie’s donations helped build 1,679 new libraries.
Carnegie believed that libraries could offer the chances to Americans, young and old. He knew that the more libraries there were, the more people would have opportunities to read and use books, speeches and news.
If you can easily find a public library in your community(社区), you’ll get more chances. After all, the United States has 9,225 public libraries. Today, libraries keep growing. Seven tenths of the libraries have free Internet. It provides much more information and opportunities to ask for jobs online.

As kids listen to a book that is being read aloud, they use Legos (乐高积木) to build images(图像) from the story happily. Today’s libraries are always looking for creative programs to bring people into the library.

The Amazon rainforest is moving toward a “breaking point”, past which trees will start to die off in large numbers, researchers have said. According to the information from satellite photos, they have discovered that 75 percent of the rainforest is now at risk of being destroyed.
“Cutting down too many trees and climate change are possible to be the main reason for this decline,” Niklas Boers of PIK and the Technical University of Munich told the BBC. The study has shown that it is only over ten years until a “significant parts” of the Amazon is changed from rainforest into savannah (大草原).
What would the world be like without the Amazon rainforest? “The Amazon stores lots of carbon and all of that would be given out into the air without the rainforest, which would then further lead to increasing temperatures and speeding up global (全球的) warming.” Professor Boulton of the University of Exeter told the BBC.
Besides that, it would also have a huge influence on the plants and animals of the Earth. The Amazon rainforest is home to thousands of various plants and animals, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society. A savannah, a grassland environment that is short of a large number of plant life, would be unable to host so many animals that now live in the rainforest. It is possible that a large number of living things would be in danger or even die out, as they would be unable to find their feet in this new and strange environment.
36. What does the first paragraph mainly tell us about the Amazon rainforest? ________
A. Problems. B. Position. C. Advantages. D. Beauty.
37. What does the underlined word “decline” mean? ________

It was a hot summer day and I had just pulled into the gas station to fill up my car. After filling it up, I started to walk inside to pay. That is when I noticed them. Two elderly women were standing back from their car. There was shock and fear on their faces. I looked and saw what they saw: five wasps (黄蜂) building a nest around their gas cap. I suddenly felt scared. I shared the ladies’ fear.
Wasps have never been friends of mine. Several times these wasps have attacked (攻击) me while I was cutting the grass, stinging (蜇) me each time I ran over their nests. The worst time, however, was when I was a young boy. A friend of mine and I were playing in my backyard. I must have stepped on one of their nests again because before I knew it, both of us were being chased and stung by the wasps while we ran away screaming. I ran to my mom with tears in my eyes. She ran a cold bath and put us both in it to ease (减轻) the pain before giving us medicine to help us feel better.
Still, I knew I couldn’t let fear stop me now. I reached into my pocket for a paper towel I had there, tore out the nest and stepped on it while the wasps buzzed around me. Both of the ladies thanked me for what I did.

As we all know, China makes every effort to protect the environment. As middle school students, we should take the responsibilities. We can reuse, reduce and recycle.
During the winter vacation, I collected used things like paper and bottles. I turned them into a hand-made rocket. I gave it to my brother as a gift. He felt amazed at my work. I was proud, too. The waste was brought back to life with just a little creativity.
Inspired by this experience, I plan to do more in the future. First of all, I’ll continue to reuse things instead of throwing them away. Secondly, I will reduce the use of energy. I can ride a bike to school instead of taking a bus, and turn off the light when not using it. Lastly, I’ll sort the rubbish and send the recyclable materials to recycling center.
If everyone takes part in protecting the environment, the earth will be a better place for all of us to live on. Take action now!

Libraries are also teaching kids about the fun of reading. The new program Read! Build! Play! ads reading into playtime.

Besides that it would also have a huge influence on the plants and animals of the Earth.

You can’t let the fear of being stung-either physically or emotionally- keep you from doing what is right. We need to love each other and change the world for the better. And the only way you can do this is through helpful acts and kindness. Don’t let the wasps in your life hold you back.

44. What did the writer do to save the two women?
A. He drove away the wasps. B. He destroyed the wasps.
