(重庆乌江新高考协作体高一期末)When Kurt Benirschke started collecting skin samples from endangered animals in 1972, he didn’t have a firm plan on what to do with them. As a researcher at the University of California San Diego, he believed that one day these samples would be used to save these animals. A few years later, he moved his collection to the San Diego Zoo, and called it the Frozen Zoo.
For a long time, it was the only project of its kind; however, in recent years, similar conservation efforts have spread globally, and tools that Benirschke didn’t yet have are now available. Today, the Frozen Zoo is the world’s largest animal cryobank(生物冷冻库), holding samples from over 10,500 individual animals from 1,220 species, in the hope that one day science can bring them back as a species.
The Frozen Zoo’s advanced technology is the key to its success in saving species from extinction. By using cryopreservation techniques, the zoo can store cells and tissues from endangered animals. The stored genetic material can be used for research, breeding(繁殖)programs, and potentially even cloning or genetic engineering to restore endangered species.
By protecting the genetic heritage of endangered animals, the Frozen Zoo provides hope for the survival of species that would otherwise be at risk of dying out, and the preservation of Earth’s precious biodiversity. It has inspired the establishment of similar cryobanks worldwide, expanding efforts to conserve endangered species. These cryobanks contribute to the global network of genetic resources, improving cooperation and knowledge exchange. By demonstrating the potential of technology in the preservation of biodiversity, the Frozen Zoo serves as a powerful tool in raising awareness and driving change.
The Frozen Zoo is like a time capsule, preserving the genetic heritage of endangered species for future generations. It reminds us about the importance of conservation and offers a window into a world that could otherwise be lost forever.

(永州高一期末)In the wild, polar bears spend much of their lives wandering pack ice (浮冰群) in search of food. These bears have adapted to a high fat diet from ocean-going animals:they are rapid and dangerous swimmers, allowing them to easily catch animals as food. Each summer,as the pack ice starts to become smaller, polar bears draw closer to land to give birth to and care for babies. Many give up food during this period, hunting again when the ice returns and living on stored fat.
Pack ice is decreasing globally. When it does form,it disappears more quickly, and tends to be thinner as well.In 2004,several polar bear deaths by drowning were recorded. The bears had been trapped on faraway areas of floating ice,and had tried to swim for land.Due to the disappearance of the ice, they were tired and drowned before reaching shore safely. This problem is likely to grow as the pack ice becomes smaller.
The disappearance of the ice has other impacts for polar bears:they are losing their natural prey (猎物),who are also affected by the loss of habitat. The bears are not very good at catching land animals, and must compete with other species for these food sources.Land animals also don’t provide the high fat diet that polar bears need, which may lead to hunger.Hungry mothers may not be able to provide their babies with the nutrition needed, which will further contribute to the drop in polar bear population.
The deadly factors brought about by global warming put polar bears at risk.Drops in birth and survival rates have already been documented, and biologists are increasingly concerned about the animals’ odd behavior as a result of the loss of their natural habitat.Environmental organizations believe a global effort is needed to fight against global warming before it is too late for polar bears,as well as many other species that call Earth home.

答案 B
6.What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.The disappearance of the ice has negative effects on polar bears.
B.Polar bears have to compete with other species for food sources.
C.Land animals don’t provide the high fat diet that polar bears need.
D.Hungry bear mothers can’t provide their babies with the nutrition needed.

答案 A
7.What is biologists’ attitude to the animals’ strange behavior?
A.Doubtful. B.Relieved.
C.Positive. D.Worried.
解析 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Drops in birth and survival rates have already been documented, and biologists are increasingly concerned about the animals’ odd behavior as a result of the loss of their natural habitat.(出生率和存活率的下降已经被记录下来,生物学家越来越关注动物由于失去自然栖息地而产生的奇怪行为。)”结合上文提到全球变暖对北极熊的影响可推知,科学家对动物奇怪的行为感到焦虑。故选D。

答案 C
Ⅱ.阅读七选五
Road systems are necessary for public transport. Street network is indeed convenient for humans. 1__ Every week, millions of wild animals die from vehicle collisions(碰撞). Despite the numerous road signs, the increasing number of animal roadkills keeps on increasing each year. Ever since road systems were constructed, animals have been exposed to danger from moving from one place to another. For this reason, wildlife bridges are built to allow wild animals to cross man-made roads safely.
Wildlife crossings are in the form of bridge overpasses and underpass tunnels. 2 With these safe routes, wild animals won’t have to access the busy roads and highways anymore. They can safely cross over or under these structures to move on to their path.
The first wildlife crossing ever made was in the form of bridges for animals. In the 1950s, France constructed several animal bridges to protect both animals and humans from vehicle collisions. 3 Apart from France, the Netherlands also features 600 overpasses and ecoducts(生态通道)for deer, boars, and badgers. As a matter of fact, the Netherlands takes pride in having the longest wildlife overpass in the world. The Natuurbrug Zanderij Crailoo stretches 800 meters in length overpassing the massive N525 roadway and nearby rail lines.
__4 There could be a few unintended consequences of the wildlife crossings based on their design. The bridges can increase the spread of invasive species, for example. Predation(捕食)rates could increase as the predators can easily hunt down the prey through the bridges.
However, the importance of ecological crossings cannot be denied. Regardless of the negative impacts, they play a vital role in the preservation and restoration of habitat and species. 5
A.Diseases may also use the crossings to spread.
B.The wildlife bridges can have negative results as well.
C.Europe surely leads the way in terms of wildlife bridges.
D.These structures provide safe passage ways for passing animals.
E.These crossings are used by an increasing number of mammals.
F.But roads and highways have done more harm than good to animals.
G.More ecoducts should be built to provide a safe space for the species.
