Having lots of books at home can encourage your child to read more. Choosing new books can be a fun adventure. Exchanging old ones can freshen up the supply and help keep your child interested in reading. The good news is that you can do it for free. Here are some places where you can find free hard copies for them.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library
The country singer started Imagination Library, a program that mails free books each month to kids aged 0 — 5. It was launched in 1995 and now mails kids more than 1 million free books each month. If the program isn’t in your community, you can apply to start a local chapter.
Freecycle and Craigslist
Everything offered on Freecycle is free — all you have to do is pick it up. With more than 9 million members, chances are that there’s a Freecycle group near you. Search the offers for kids’ books or you can post a wanted ad. You can also search the “Free Stuff” section on Craigslist to find people who are giving away books and learning games.
Book Exchanges and Book Banks
Search online to see if your community has a book exchange or a book bank. Book exchanges encourage visitors to trade in books. Book banks simply give books away. Some book banks partner with schools and community groups to distribute free books to kids. But some are open to the public.
Little Free Libraries
Little free libraries are free book-sharing boxes, where anyone can take or share a book. So far, volunteers have placed more than 90,000 book-sharing boxes near sidewalks and other places people tend to walk by. The goal is to provide 24/7 access to free books.
21. What does the text say about Imagination Library?
A. It’s a creation of a musician. B. It’s intended for people of all ages.
C. It mails over 100 million books yearly. D. It covers most of the countries’ communities.
22. Which place should people visit if they want to share a book at anytime?
A. Freecycle. B. Craigslist. C. A book bank. D. A little free library.
23. What does the text mainly introduce?
A. What books benefit your child most. B. How to interest your child in reading.
C. Where to get free books for your child. D. Why to encourage your child to read more.

Looking at Brandon Miles May for the first time, you’d probably mistake him for a teenager, but he is 35 years old. We’ve seen such shocking differences between age and appearance before, but it is usually due to some rare hormonal disorder. In Brandon’s case, he never mentioned such a condition in any of his videos, but owed his unbelievably youthful looks to his anti-aging practice, which includes a balanced diet, minimal sun exposure, and at least eight hours of sleep per night.
“When I go to the airport, security ask me how old I am, and they do a double take,” Brandon said in one of his videos. “The age people think I am ranges but it can be 15 or 16 or 18 to 19. I’ve never had any work done. What I do is pretty simple but effective.”
At age 15, Brandon started avoiding direct sunlight and making changes to his diet, such as including more plant-based foods and green tea, and by age 19 he had already cut out sugars, grains, and carbohydrates. He has also never had a drop of alcohol and has never smoked, because he knows the effects that such bad habits have on health.
“I’ve been staying out of sunlight my whole life, ” he added. “I wear a hoodie (连帽衫) to block the sun and use physical coverings on the backs of my hands. I also don’t go heavy on exercise. Too much exercise can cause stress on the body — it can age the body. I keep my exercise moderate and gentle — a walk, yoga, and some strength training.”
Brandon says that he looks better than he did ten years ago, but more importantly, he feels a lot better, too. At the end of the day, youthful looks are nice, but what good are they if you feel terrible? Although he agrees that some people may find his lifestyle choices a bit strange, the 35-year-old man claims they are worth it for his anti-aging efforts.
24. What contributes to Brandon’s unusual youthful looks?
A. A rare skin condition. B. A good state of mind.
C. His superb make-up skills. D. His healthy and balanced lifestyle.
25. What can be learned about Brandon from paragraph 3?
A. He’s quit smoking for his health. B. He’s been mindful of his health.
C. He’s been sticking to a sugar-free diet since 15. D. He’s been taking sunbaths on a regular basis.
26. What’s Brandon’s opinion about exercise?
A. The less, the better. B. The more intensive, the better.
C. More isn’t necessarily better. D. Strength training isn’t easy.
27. What does the underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Some people. B. Youthful looks.
C. His lifestyle choices. D. His anti-aging efforts.

A device used to treat brain injuries worked so efficiently that following a trial, some patients refused to have theirs turned off. The trial, which began in 2018, involved five people between the ages of 22 and 60. They all had mental problems like thinking or reasoning after suffering severe brain injuries between three and eighteen years earlier. The injuries meant they had difficulty performing some tasks.
For the trial, doctors implanted (植入) a tiny device into each patient’s brain during an operation. The device used Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), which rebuilds connections between neurons (神经元). Neurons are tiny cells, and there are billions of them in the brain. Whenever you do anything, chemical and electrical signals move between your neurons. The tiny device applied electricity to parts of the brain where these signals had been interrupted. The trial was the first to focus DBS on a part of the brain that dealt with awareness of your surroundings.
After the devices were implanted, the patients in the study kept them running for 90 days, for 12 hours a day. This had an incredible effect on their lives. They could suddenly do things, like playing video games or reading a book, that had previously been impossible because of their brain injuries. They also reported feeling less tired and could get through the day without napping (打盹).
Gina Arata, a patient who took part in the trial, said, “I can remember how much money is in my bank account. I wasn’t able to read, but after the implant I bought a book…and loved it and remembered it.” Nicholas Schiff, one of the authors of the study, called it a “pioneering moment”. Scientists hope the implant will change the lives of more people with serious long-term brain injuries.
28. What do we know about the device from paragraph 1?
A. It functioned well on patients. B. It cured patients’ mental illnesses.
C. It could help perform tasks without difficulty. D. It could protect patients against brain injuries.
29. What does paragraph 2 focus on?
A. The structure of the brain. B. The process of the trial.
C. The function of the neurons. D. The principle of the device.
30. Why is Gina Arata mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To prove the success of the device.
B. To show that she is good at numbers now.
C. To imply that the device can make people professional.
D. To emphasize the influence of reading on brain injury recovery.
31. What can be the suitable title for the text?
A Common Problems Caused by Brain Injuries
B. A Breakthrough in Treating Brain Injuries
C. The Importance of Neurons in Brain Function
D. Strategies to Overcome Mental Illnesses after Brain Injuries

Stories of violent meetings between sharks and swimmers can frighten the recreating public. But shark experts say the risk of an attack is extremely low.
Sharks live in the whole ocean, Catherine Macdonald, director of the Shark Research & Conservation Program at the University of Miami, says, and they may swim into shallow waters near the coastline to hunt for fish or avoid larger sharks. Most of the time, when sharks come across people, they just swim away.
Humans aren’t part of the shark’s diet, which for most species consists primarily of smaller fish or invertebrates (无脊椎动物). If they attack people, it’s likely because they’re confused or curious. “Relative to the number of people who enjoy recreation in our oceans, shark bites are very rare,” Macdonald says.
According to a global count of shark attacks, there were 69 bites in 2023. That’ s slightly higher than the five-year average of 63 shark attacks. Macdonald says there could be a few factors contributing to a possible increase in shark attacks, including a rise in reporting, a larger number of people using the water and beach-goers spending more time out of the year at the shore. Warmer waters caused by climate change may also be driving an increase in shark populations in certain areas.
“If you spot a shark near you in the water, normal wild animal rules apply,” Macdonald says. “Stay calm, and if the shark is acting in a way that makes you uncomfortable, calmly move away and leave the water.” The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also recommends that swimmers remain in groups, avoid entering the water if they’re bleeding or it’s dark outside and not wear shiny jewelry (珠宝), which can appear like fish scales to a shark.
But Macdonald notes that other animals are far deadlier than sharks, including moose, hippos and even pet dogs. “There are also other dangerous threats to worry about at the beach, such as dehydration, sun exposure, riptides and drowning,” she adds. “When people ask me about safety risks at the beach and what they should be worried about, I tell them that the most dangerous thing they’ll do that day is probably drive to the beach.”
32. Why may sharks swim away from deep waters?
A. For food or shelter. B. For rest or recreation.
C. To warm themselves. D. To produce their young.
33. What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A. The serious effects of climate change. B. The reasons behind the rising shark attacks.
C. The places where shark attacks often happen. D. The number of people who go to the beach each year.
34. What are swimmers advised to do to stay safe?
A. Observe the swimming rules. B. Avoid staying in the water for too long.
C. Keep an eye out for the bleeding sharks. D. Remove the shiny jewelry before swimming.
35. Which of the following statements will Macdonald most probably agree with?
A. Ignorance leads to danger. B. First impressions can be misleading.
C. Prevention begins with not taking the risk. D. Too many concerns can make one lose the courage.

Excitement rushed through my body as I approached Scopa, a famous restaurant in my town. Today was a day I would remember for the rest of my life. I was competing for the newest chef position, which would require me to show my cooking skills. It was an opportunity I had been working towards for months, and today, it was finally here.
As I arrived at the restaurant, I saw my best friend, Mary. She is also interested in cooking and we are in the same cooking club. Now, she was the person I would be competing against. I wanted Mary to win, but deep down, I also wanted to win. We entered the kitchen and quickly put on our chef’s hat, which seemed to symbolize our commitment to excellence.
“Using the ingredients in the kitchen, cook an Italian dish that would be a great addition to our menu,” said the restaurant manager. “I’ll leave the kitchen and return in two hours.” With those words, he left the room, leaving us to our own devices.
We immediately headed for the refrigerator, and I took some carrots, potatoes, and onions. I cut them up and put them into a pot with some olive oil, preparing them to be cooked. Meanwhile, Mary preheated the oven and got to cut up the eggplants.
Not long after, the oven was ready. But just as she was about to put the eggplants in, Mary became distracted (分心) by the ding of the oven door. Suddenly, she screamed in pain, “Ouch!” She dropped the knife onto the cutting board and applied pressure to the finger she had just cut.
Seeing that, I thought to myself, “Ha! I’ll definitely win now!” However, another voice in my body said, “Help Mary. Help your best friend now!”

W: I’m not sure, Mr Sanders. My dad would be excited if I studied medicine, but that sounds too difficult. I’ve always been interested in art, but I’m not sure if I want to be a professional artist.
M: Well, you could study art. That was my wife’s major, you know.
W: Really? What did you major in?
M: Oh, I always wanted to be a businessman, and that’s what I studied in college. It’s not for everyone, but I liked it. I wish I had taken some other classes, though. If you have a chance to learn about a bunch of different things and then make a decision, I think that would be your best bet.
W: That’s good advice, Mr Sanders. Thanks!
M: My pleasure. If you want to talk more, come next door anytime you want.

I was first attracted by climbing in 2016 when, as a reporter, I was arranged to interview some professional mountaineers. Over the several days I spent with them, I began to understand the sense of freedom that mountaineering brings. Then about three years later, I gave up my job and joined the British Top Expedition. We trained at a a local gym, which was the easy part. However, I found there were lots of things that frightened me about Mount Everest. That was one of the most difficult things for climbing. Anyway, I’ve managed to climb the mountain twice. The first time I went, as a reporter, I carried my camera all the way, but it wasn’t necessary. You can even forget showers on a mountain as well.

【答案】24. D 25. B 26. C 27. C

A device used to treat brain injuries worked so efficiently that, following a trial, some patients refused to have theirs turned off. The trial, which began in 2018, involved five people between the ages of 22 and 60. They all had mental problems like thinking or reasoning after suffering severe brain injuries between three and eighteen years earlier. The injuries meant they had difficulty performing some tasks.
For the trial doctors implanted (植入) a tiny device into each patient’s brain during an operation.
A. Common Problems Caused by Brain Injuries
B. A Breakthrough in Treating Brain Injuries
C. The Importance of Neurons in Brain Function
D. Strategies to Overcome Mental Illnesses after Brain Injuries
【答案】28. A 29. D 30. A 31. B

【答案】32. A 33. B 34. D 35. C

【答案】Dear Mark,
I’m writing to share with you one of the most unforgettable experiences I had during the past summer vacation.
One extremely hot morning in late July, I carried about 200 kilograms of watermelons grown by my parents to a local farmers’ market. I did this all by myself, hoping to help ease my parents’ burden and enrich my vacation life as well. However, things didn’t go smoothly as I’d expected. I just sold less than 50 kilograms of watermelons in over four hours. With a heavy heart and a sense of disappointment, I went home with the rest of the watermelons.
Through this experience, I’ve become more aware of my parents’ difficulty in supporting our big family. Moreover, I’ve made up my mind to study harder to repay them.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Within just seconds, I made a quick decision. Without hesitation, I rushed to Mary’s side, grabbing a clean cloth to help stop the bleeding. Mary was crying all the time, keeping saying how eagerly she wanted to work in this restaurant. Realizing that Mary might not finish the competition in time, I decided to help complete her remaining steps though I knew I might lose this chance because I had many things to do. So for the rest of the time, I was scrambling. Anyhow, we did it. Soon, the manager came into the kitchen to check our work. When he tasted Mary’s dish, he smiled in satisfaction.
Then the manager announced that Mary was the winner. Though it turned out as I had expected, I was a little down when hearing the result. At that time, Mary told the manager what had happened and said that the winner should belong to me. The manager agreed to give me another chance, which made me overjoyed. I tried my best to complete my dish, and at last the manager appreciated it. Then to our surprise, the manager decided to employ both of us. From the experience, I’ve learned that winning is great, but sometimes helping others feels even better. Just do good things, and you will be rewarded.
